A Fluidodinâmica computacional (CFD) foi usada para simular o comportamento de secagem de um secador de milho de leito fixo bidimensional. O modelo matemático foi validado por meio da comparação com dados experimentais presentes na literatura e foi resolvido com o software ANSYS Fluent 18.0. A ferramenta adicional User-Defined Function (UDF), escrita em linguagem C, foi utilizada para customizar o software, permitindo inserir um modelo de secagem mais completo. O erro relativo percentual (ER%) entre os resultados numéricos e experimentais para o modelo unidimensional variou entre 5,44% e 12,46% demonstrando uma boa predição do comportamento da secagem do leito de grãos de milho. Para o modelo bidimensional, o valor máximo para desvio padrão relativo percentual (DPR%) entre a simulação numérica do modelo proposto e as simulações apresentadas por França et al. (1994) e Souza (1996) foi de 9,39%, também demonstrando uma boa predição

O motor a combustão interna é uma máquina térmica que evoluiu no decorrer dos anos, no qual o seu arrefecimento é realizado pelo radiador que executa a troca de calor deste sistema. Até a década de 70 os sistemas de arrefecimento eram abertos utilizando apenas a água como fluido de arrefecimento, após este período os sistemas passaram a ser fechados permitindo aos motores operarem em temperaturas mais altas melhorando assim a sua eficiência. Portanto, nos sistemas utilizados atualmente a água não é mais um fluido de arrefecimento viável, tornando-se necessário a adição de aditivos à mesma. O presente artigo tem por objetivo demonstrar os aditivos utilizados, comparar diferentes tipos de fluidos destacando os benefícios, além de trazer metodologias testadas em laboratório. As análises experimentais foram baseadas nos testes de viscosidade e calorimetria entre três fluidos, sendo eles um aditivo concentrado à base de etilenoglicol, um fluido de arrefecimento concentrado de base polimérica e o último trata-se de um fluido também de base polimérica, mas pronto para uso, sem necessidade de diluição, com o intuito de verificar a resistência de cada um de escoar e verificar a eficiência no processo de transferência de calor. Através dos resultados experimentais foi possível comprovar que a utilização do fluido de base polimérica pronto para uso comparado ao fluido regulamentado que precisa ter obrigatoriamente etilenoglicol, pode ser uma alternativa eficaz em regiões tropicais, comprovando as expectativas iniciais e a viabilidade técnica. As grandes vantagens do fluido de base polimérica pronto para uso encontrado nos testes são relacionadas a sua atoxidade, sua menor viscosidade, e a sua troca térmica mais rápida, proporcionando uma maior estabilidade térmica ao motor do carro.

Uma grande evolução tecnológica ao longo dos anos permitiu que o homem utilizasse de conhecimentos técnicos e empíricos a seu favor, com o intuito de moldar o meio a sua volta, melhorando sua vivência, conforto, comodidade e praticidade. No âmbito dos materiais, vem sendo recorrente a maior exigência de evolução, tendo em vista atender maiores necessidades, especificações e exigências a serem cumpridas. Define-se por um material ideal aquele que atenda às necessidades do usuário, no que diz respeito a aplicabilidade e custo benéfico e do meio ambiente, no que tange a poluição, e recursos naturais. De acordo com a SIAMIG (Associação das Indústrias Sucroenergéticas de Minas Gerais), em 2021 a produção de cana-de-açúcar chegou a 70.565.766 toneladas. Diante de todo este montante produzido parte do insumo final é descartado de forma incorreta. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar uma nova metodologia de uso e aplicabilidade ao dejeto da cana a partir do desenvolvimento de um novo material compósito cuja base é o bagaço. Com o bagaço da cana-de-açúcar devidamente seco, foram selecionadas duas diferentes granulações da fibra e elaborados os materiais compósitos com resina epóxi, os quais foram submetidos a testes de compressão para análise de propriedades mecânicas.

A mixed cabin solar dryer was designed and tested in Brazil in the spring equinox, for the drying of corn grains. The key advantage of the current design is its ability to work even in locations with no electricity because a photovoltaic module is used to power an electrical heater and fans. The analysis of the drying process was performed based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. For average solar radiation and ambient temperature of 710 W/m2 and 30 °C, respectively, the average thermal efficiency obtained was 21% and the exergy efficiency ranged between 10% and 66%, with an average value of 23%. It was observed that the corn grains reached the desired moisture content of 13% in 8.5 h, while a similar sample subjected to natural sun drying failed to reach this moisture content in 24 h. The PV module was also used to preheat the drying air, allowing an average increase in the airflow temperature of 14 °C, reaching a maximum of 27 °C.

This paper presents a hybrid solar dryer with baffles disposed of on the solar collector. When the levels of solar radiation are low, an electrical heater is used to increase the drying air temperature. A photovoltaic system feeds the electrical heater and the fans, and it is also used to preheat the drying air, increasing the temperature at the inlet of the solar collector. Experimental results of corn drying indicated that the baffles augmented the energy efficiency of the system (from 23.5 to 24.9%) and the temperature rise in the solar collector (from 13.5 to 20.2 ℃), reducing the time required for the corn to reach the final desired moisture content.

In this study, an energy and exergy analysis of the drying process of corn was developed for a hybrid dryer coupled with a PV system. The differential of the dryer is the fact that the PV system was used to feed an electrical heater and fans and also to preheat the drying air through the use of the PV panel rear side as heat exchanger, increasing the air temperature before the inlet of the solar collector. The performance of solar drying processes is extensively investigated in the literature, but usually the drying chamber is used as control volume in the analysis. The main contribution of this work is the assessment and comparison of the performance of the dryer using three different control volumes in the thermodynamic analysis: only the drying chamber, the drying chamber and the solar collector, referred to as solar dryer and the complete drying set, corresponding to the drying chamber, the solar collector and the PV module. The results indicated that the efficiency values found are greatly affected by the control volume used, with variations of the exergy efficiency ranging from 22.2% to 45.0%, depending on the control volume used. It was found that the higher efficiencies were found selecting the drying chamber as control volume (as usually chosen by most works from literature). For the complete drying set, the individual contributions of the exergy rates were evaluated. It was concluded that the main contribution to the input and output exergy are the heat transfer and the outflow exergy rates, respectively.

This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of the drying of bananas inside a small-scale prototype solar updraft tower in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A model based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics was developed, using the ambient conditions and airflow parameters data obtained in the experimental prototype. The exergy rates were determined, and it was concluded that the incident solar radiation plays an important role on the drying process of bananas, the higher the solar radiation, the higher the exergy rates. The exergetic efficiency was compared to that obtained without products inside the solar updraft tower, and it was found that the exergetic efficiency increased from about 20% to 27% with load.

Com objetivo de avaliar a potencialidade de um novo fluido capaz de melhorar a eficiência dos processos de troca térmica nos sistemas de refrigeração, o presente trabalho propôs o estudo do desempenho termo-hidráulico de nanofluidos constituídos por nanopartículas de nanotubos de carbono do tipo MWCNT dispersos em água destilada. Foram utilizadas nanopartículas com grau de funcionalização -OH, 3%, 6% e 9% para produzir nove amostras de nanofluidos. Foi utilizado o método de “dois passos”, com auxílio de sonicação e homogeneização de alta pressão, para dispersar as nanopartículas no fluido base. Para a avaliação do desempenho termo-hidráulico foram realizadas as seguintes etapas: produção dos nanofluidos pelo método de dois passos. A utilização da bancada experimental permitiu obter os parâmetros necessários para a determinação do coeficiente de transferência de calor por convecção e desempenho termo-hidráulico.

O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar o uso do modelo de ensino baseado em metodologia ativa e incentivar os alunos para que aprendam de forma autônoma e participativa, a partir de problemas e situações reais. A metodologia utilizada foi à análise comparativa entre o ensino de aulas laboratoriais com o método tradicional em uma turma de 19 discentes no ano de 2019, e outra turma de 19 discentes no ano de 2020 mediante a pandemia da COVID-19 com aplicação de metodologias ativas de ensino. Foi introduzida a busca autônoma por conhecimento, através de pesquisas científicas, buscando-se o desenvolvimento de roteiros de aulas práticas da disciplina de Métodos de Processos de Controle de Riscos em um curso de Engenharia de Saúde e Segurança em uma universidade em Minas Gerais, Brasil. Em razão da pandemia COVID-19, ambientes de educação têm crescido consideravelmente, devido à suspensão de aulas presenciais nas instituições de ensino em todo o país. Desde então, a busca pelo uso de plataformas digitais como Google Meet e outras ferramentas virtuais, aumentou bastante. Conclui-se que a metodologia ativa utilizada para as aulas práticas contribuiu consideravelmente para o aprendizado dos alunos envolvidos, principalmente na motivação dos mesmos. Onde se obteve um aumento da média das notas de 7,8 pontos no ano de 2019 antes da pandemia com o uso da metodologia tradicional, para uma média de 9,3 em 2020 durante a pandemia com o uso da metodologia ativa.

The solid residue coming from the treatment of effluents generated in pickling steel wire has an inorganic nature. This residue, after the process of moisture removal by a filter press, has high moisture content 70% wet basis. Transport costs and landfill could be significantly reduced with the products drying. The use of solar energy to promote drying of the residue is technically and economically feasible. Environmental benefits are presented, due to its renewable characteristic and exemption for emission of greenhouse gases. This study aimed to evaluate the drying of industrial solid waste, using an active integrated solar dryer. The thermal properties and the thermal efficiency of operation of the device in different operating conditions were studied. Experimental tests were developed to evaluate the operation of the solar dryer, until a moisture content (wet basis) of 30% is reached. The instantaneous thermal efficiency of the dryer varied from 9.7% to 29.5%. In the drying experiments, the drying efficiency ranged from 5.2% to 7.2%. Thermal efficiencies presented suitable values for air heaters. Nevertheless, drying efficiencies were low, but they can be improved if the load is increased.

The continuing research for an alternative power source due to the perceived scarcity of fuel fossils has, in recent years, given solar energy a remarkable edge. Nevertheless, the Earth's daily and seasonal movement affects the intensity of the incident solar radiation. Devices can track the sun in order to ensure optimum positions with regard to incident solar radiation, maximizing the absorbed solar energy, and the useful energy gain. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to estimate the solar radiation absorbed, the useful energy gain, and the efficiency of a flat-plate solar collector in Brazil. The results for a sun tracking flat-plate solar collector were compared to fixed devices. The full tracking system with rotation about two axes presented higher absorbed energy, when compared to the rotation about a single axe and to a fixed collector. Also, it was shown that the tilt angle for a fixed solar collector does not cause significant variations in the useful energy gain or in the absorbed solar radiation, for the same azimuth angle.

This chapter presents models to estimate the environmental conditions and the behavior of the airflow within a prototype of a small-scale solar chimney located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A correlation from the literature for diffuse radiation, based on clearness index and global radiation, was evaluated. A model from the literature was used to estimate the ambient temperature of the device. The results of both parameters were compared with the experimental data. An energy balance was applied to find the heat interactions between the ground, airflow, coverage, and environment, based on the estimated incident solar radiation and ambient temperature. Literature correlations were used to estimate the convective heat transfer coefficients. Consolidated correlations were then applied to estimate the mass airflow rate and outlet temperature of the airflow inside the prototype. The results were compared with the experimental data for 4 days in autumn and good agreements were found. The model was then used to estimate the airflow parameters for 1 year. The analysis performed was transient, with results provided for each hour of the day, for 365 days. These results showed good accordance with the experimental data. The greater differences were found in the mass flow rate at night.

The development of alternative energy sources is increasingly becoming a necessity. In this context, solar energy stands out because it is a renewable and low pollutant source of energy. The solar chimney uses solar energy to generate hot airflow that can be used to dry agricultural products or generate electric power. This paper presents an experimental study of the airflow inside a solar chimney. The tests were performed in a prototype built on the campus of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, with appropriate dimensions to dry agricultural products. The values of temperature, velocity, solar radiation, and humidity inside and outside the device were monitored over a nine month period, allowing the characterization of the airflow and the determination of the optical properties of the materials used.

An analytical and numerical study of the unsteady airflow inside a solar chimney was performed. The conservation and transport equations that describe the flow were modeled and solved numerically using the finite volumes technique in generalized coordinates. The numerical results were physically validated through comparison with the experimental data. The developed model was used for airflow simulation in solar chimneys with operational and geometric configurations different from those found in the experimental prototype. Analysis showed that the height and diameter of the tower are the most important physical variables for solar chimney design.

Solar dryers use free and renewable energy sources, reduce drying losses (as compared to sun drying) and show lower operational costs than the artificial drying, thus presenting an interesting alternative to conventional dryers. This work proposes to study the feasibility of a solar chimney to dry agricultural products. To assess the technical feasibility of this drying device, a prototype solar chimney, in which the air velocity, temperature and humidity parameters were monitored as a function of the solar incident radiation, was built. Drying tests of food, based on theoretical and experimental studies, assure the technical feasibility of solar chimneys used as solar dryers for agricultural products. The constructed chimney generates a hot airflow with a yearly average rise in temperature (compared to the ambient air temperature) of 13 ± 1 °C. In the prototype, the yearly average mass flow was found to be 1.40 ± 0.08 kg/s, which allowed a drying capacity of approximately 440 kg.

H2 can be obtained according to different processes, including the Na-O-H (sodium-oxygen-hydrogen) thermochemical cycle that breaks water through cyclic chemical reactions sustained by a heat source at specified temperature levels. In this context, GEN-IV (Generation IV) nuclear reactors are suitable energy options for these kind of processes because they are designed to provide electricity together with high temperature applications. At the same time, water could be get by means of MED (Multi-Effect Distillation), a desalination method that harvest waste heat from thermal systems to get fresh water from saline one. Then, H2 production from Na-O-H cycle through the heat supplied by GEN-IV reactors coupled to a MED unit enables the trigeneration of electricity, H2 and H2O, three important goods for society. Therefore, the first main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the thermal performance of this trigeneration process, a new one, considering three 1000 MWth GEN-IV technologies as the heat sources for both Na-O-H cycle plus a MED installation. This goal is developed by implementing mass, energy, entropy and exergy balances in the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software to determine the amount of H2, electricity and desalinated H2O acquired. Consonant with preliminary results, this trigeneration process has potential to produce around 5 kg/s of H2, 400 MWe and 800 kg/s of H2O. These are theoretical and maximized values in function of all simplifications considered in the research. In the second main aim is investigated if there are other variations (b, c, d and e) of the Na-O-H cycle that have higher thermal performance when compared to its classic form, variation (a), evaluated in the first maim objective. According to the results, variation (e) has energy efficiency around 77% while variation (a) has energy efficiency near 52%. In the third main aim is established the thermodynamic limits (the minimum requirements of enthalpy change and other thermodynamic parameters) for thermochemical water splitting cycles starting from systems similar to the Na-O-H cycle. The results showed that all thermochemical cycles must have enthalpy change superior to 283.83 kJ to produce 1 mol of H2 gas. As it is being demonstrated in this study, it is possible to conclude that the trigeneration process of H2, water and electricity has potential to attempt the demand for such goods through more research and development of the systems analyzed. O hidrogênio (H2) é uma substância com uma ampla gama de aplicações. Ele pode ser obtido de acordo com diferentes processos, incluindo o ciclo termoquímico Na-O-H (sódio-oxigênio-hidrogênio) que quebra moléculas de água por meio de reações químicas cíclicas sustentadas por uma fonte de calor. Nesse contexto, os reatores nucleares de quarta geração (GEN-IV) são opções energéticas adequadas para atender a esse tipo de processos, pois são projetados para fornecer eletricidade em conjunto com aplicações que demandam altas temperaturas. Ao mesmo tempo, água potável poderia ser obtida por meio do processo de dessalinização MED (Multi-Effect Distillation) que reutiliza o calor residual de sistemas térmicos. Ainda, a produção de H2 a partir do ciclo Na-O-H através do calor fornecido por reatores GEN-IV acoplados a uma unidade MED possibilita a trigeração de eletricidade, H2 e H2O, três importantes insumos para a sociedade. Então, o primeiro objetivo principal desta tese é avaliar o desempenho térmico de um novo processo de trigeração, considerando três tecnologias GEN-IV de 1000 MW como fontes de calor para o ciclo Na-O-H e instalação MED. Este objetivo é desenvolvido através da implementação de balanços de massa, energia, entropia e exergia no software Engineering Equation Solver (EES) para determinar a quantidade desses três insumos. De acordo com os resultados, o processo avaliado tem potencial para produzir cerca de 5 kg/s de H2, 400 MW de eletricidade e 800 kg/s de água. Tais valores obtidos são teóricos e maximizados em função de todas as simplificações consideradas na pesquisa. No segundo objetivo principal é investigado se existem outras variações (b, c, d ou e) do ciclo Na-O-H que apresentam desempenho térmico superior à forma clássica desse sistema, variação (a), avaliada no primeiro objetivo. Os resultados indicaram que a variação (e) apresenta eficiência energética de aproximadamente 77% enquanto a variação (a) apresenta eficiência próxima de 52%. No terceiro objetivo principal são estabelecidos os limites termodinâmicos para ciclos termoquímicos partir de sistemas semelhantes ao Na-O-H. Os resultados mostraram que todos os ciclos termoquímicos devem ter variação de entalpia superior a 283,83 kJ para produzir 1 mol de H2. Finalmente, concluiu-se que o processo de trigeração de H2, água e eletricidade avaliado no trabalho tem potencial para atender a demanda por tais insumos pelo desenvolvimento futuro dos sistemas analisados.

Este trabalho abarca o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para o monitoramento e medição do consumo de combustível em motores de combustão interna baseados no Ciclo Otto dotados de sistema de injeção do tipo Common Rail, em teve como objetivos o compromisso de ser não invasiva, de ser montada com eletrônica de baixo custo, e de apresentar níveis de precisão competitivos em relação a outras técnicas de medição existentes. Desse modo, o processo de medição é realizado sem cortes nos condutores elétricos, inserções de componentes nos circuitos originais do veículo, ou mesmo contato direto com o fluído combustível, preservando as características originais do veículo. A técnica propõe a medição dos sinais elétricos enviados da central eletrônica do veículo para os eletro-injetores de combustível. Assim, o tempo de injeção são todos registrados e convertidos em massa de combustível utilizando-se de um coeficiente de calibração previsto na equação de modelamento e encontrado através de um critério proposto nesta pesquisa. A eficácia da metodologia proposta foi testada em um Motor de Pesquisa de Cilindro Único (SCRE), dotado de toda instrumentação necessária para avaliar a efetividade do sistema. Foram realizados trinta e dois testes, considerando quatro diferentes cargas no eixo do motor, quatro diferentes velocidades de rotação, e dois diferentes tipos de combustível, o Etanol puro (E100) e a mistura de Gasolina e Etanol a 27% (E27). Os resultados foram avaliados em termos de erros percentuais, decorrentes do desvio entre os valores observados nas medições das massas finais consumidas registradas pela balança gravimétrica (referência) e a massa final mensurada pelo protótipo. Os erros percentuais obtidos se mostraram menores que os apontados pela literatura em sensores do tipo eletromecânicos, sendo que a medição total do consumo realizado em Etanol (E100) apresentou um erro percentual máximo igual a ±2,9%, e para a mistura de Gasolina e Etanol 27% (E27) foi igual a ±3,0%. Assim, concluiu-se que os objetivos propostos foram alcançados de forma satisfatória e com resultados condizentes com outras técnicas propostas na literatura. Percebeu-se também que a metodologia, baseada somente nas medições dos pulsos elétricos de injeção, pode ser considerada aplicável a uma faixa ilimitada de vazão e pressão. This work encompasses the development of a methodology for monitoring and measuring fuel consumption in internal combustion engines based on the Otto cycle equipped with a Common Rail injection system, and aimed to be non-invasive, to be assembled with low-cost electronics, and to present competitive accuracy levels compared to other existing measurement techniques. In this way, the measurement process is performed without cuts in the electrical conductors, insertion of components in the vehicle's original circuits, or even direct contact with the fuel fluid, preserving the vehicle's original characteristics. The technique proposes the measurement of electrical signals sent from the vehicle's electronic central to the fuel electro-injectors. Thus, the injection times are all recorded and converted into fuel mass using a calibration coefficient provided for in the modeling equation and found through a criterion proposed in this research. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was tested on a Single Cylinder Research Engine (SCRE), equipped with all the necessary instrumentation to evaluate the effectiveness of the system. Thirty-two tests were performed, considering four different loads on the engine shaft, four different rotation speeds, and two different types of fuel, pure Ethanol (E100) and the mixture of Gasolina and 27% Ethanol (E27). The results were evaluated in terms of percentage errors, resulting from the deviation between the values observed in the measurements of the final consumed masses recorded by the gravimetric scale (reference) and the final mass measured by the prototype. The percentage errors obtained were lower than those indicated in the literature in electromechanical type sensors, and the total consumption measurement performed in Ethanol (E100) presented a maximum percentage error equal to ±2.9%, and for the Gasolina mixture and 27% Ethanol (E27) was equal to ±3.0%. Thus, it was concluded that the proposed objectives were achieved satisfactorily and with results consistent with other techniques proposed in the literature. It was also noticed that the methodology, based only on the measurements of electrical injection pulses, can be considered applicable to an unlimited range of flow and pressure.
