Abstract

During the third long shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, the CMS Detector will undergo a major upgrade to prepare for Phase-2 of the CMS physics program, starting around 2026. The upgraded CMS detector will be read out at an unprecedented data rate of up to 50 Tb/s with an event rate of 750 kHz, selected by the level-1 hardware trigger, and an average event size of 7.4 MB. Complete events will be analyzed by the High-Level Trigger (HLT) using software algorithms running on standard processing nodes, potentially augmented with hardware accelerators. Selected events will be stored permanently at a rate of up to 7.5 kHz for offline processing and analysis. This paper presents the baseline design of the DAQ and HLT systems for Phase-2, taking into account the projected evolution of high speed network fabrics for event building and distribution, and the anticipated performance of general purpose CPU. In addition, some opportunities offered by reading out and processing parts of the detector data at the full LHC bunch crossing rate (40 MHz) are discussed.

Abstract

The data acquisition system (DAQ) of the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) assembles events of 2MB at a rate of 100 kHz. The event builder collects event fragments from about 750 sources and assembles them into complete events which are then handed to the High-Level Trigger (HLT) processes running on O(1000) computers. The aging eventbuilding hardware will be replaced during the long shutdown 2 of the LHC taking place in 2019/20. The future data networks will be based on 100 Gb/s interconnects using Ethernet and Infiniband technologies. More powerful computers may allow to combine the currently separate functionality of the readout and builder units into a single I/O processor handling simultaneously 100 Gb/s of input and output traffic. It might be beneficial to preprocess data originating from specific detector parts or regions before handling it to generic HLT processors. Therefore, we will investigate how specialized coprocessors, e.g. GPUs, could be integrated into the event builder. We will present the envisioned changes to the event-builder compared to today’s system. Initial measurements of the performance of the data networks under the event-building traffic pattern will be shown. Implications of a folded network architecture for the event building and corresponding changes to the software implementation will be discussed.

Abstract

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS Online Monitoring system (OMS) is an upgrade and successor to the CMS Web-Based Monitoring (WBM)system, which is an essential tool for shift crew members, detector subsystem experts, operations coordinators, and those performing physics analyses. The CMS OMS is divided into aggregation and presentation layers. Communication between layers uses RESTful JSON:API compliant requests. The aggregation layer is responsible for collecting data from heterogeneous sources, storage of transformed and pre-calculated (aggregated) values and exposure of data via the RESTful API. The presentation layer displays detector information via a modern, user-friendly and customizable web interface. The CMS OMS user interface is composed of a set of cutting-edge software frameworks and tools to display non-event data to any authenticated CMS user worldwide. The web interface tree-like component structure comprises (top-down): workspaces, folders, pages, controllers and portlets. A clear hierarchy gives the required flexibility and control for content organization. Each bottom element instantiates a portlet and is a reusable component that displays a single aspect of data, like a table, a plot, an article, etc. Pages consist of multiple different portlets and can be customized at runtime by using a drag-and-drop technique. This is how a single page can easily include information from multiple online sources. Different pages give access to a summary of the current status of the experiment, as well as convenient access to historical data. This paper describes the CMS OMS architecture, core concepts and technologies of the presentation layer.

Abstract

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are a type of assistive technology (AT) that uses the brain signals of users to establish a communication and control channel between them and an external device (usually a computer). BCI systems may be a suitable tool to restore communication skills in severely motor-disabled patients, as BCI do not rely on muscular control. There are several diseases that cause severe impairment of motor skills in affected patients, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The loss of communication (mainly with family and caregivers) is considered by ALS patients as even more negative than the loss of physical aspects. Another interesting assistive technology to improve the quality of life of these patients is the control of a domotic system through a BCI. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present the latest developed application of the UMA BCI group to provide communication and control system through brain activity for ALS patients. This application will focus on the use of a BCI that could allow patient communication through some of the most common messaging applications on a smartphone (WhatsApp, e-mail and SMS), and domotic control for controlling device such as a TV, air conditioner, music and lights. The control of the BCI is achieved through the well-known visual P300 row-column paradigm (RCP), allowing the user to select control commands as well as spelling characters. Universidad de Málaga. Abstract

International audience; Le projet SUaaVE porte sur l’acceptation du Véhicule Autonome (VA) par le public à travers la conception itérative de fonctions novatrices. Parmi elles, une Interface Cognitive (IC) a été conçue à partir de connaissances en psychologie cognitive et de méthodes de conception centrées utilisateur. Les principes initiaux de l’IC sont basés sur le processus de représentation mentale impliqué dans la compréhension de la situation et la confiance. Un prototype d’IC a ainsi été conçu et testé pour recueillir les besoins utilisateurs et préciser les pistes de conception. Une seconde IC en a émergé et a été connectée à d’autres fonctions novatrices du VA pour en mesurer le gain d’acceptabilité, qui est un enjeu pour le développement de ces nouveaux véhicules. Ces travaux sont une démonstration méthodologique pour valoriser les Facteurs Humains en conception, et technologique pour valoriser les fruits de la recherche auprès des industries.

Abstract

En 2013, une étude de l'ANSES sur la contamination par le mercure (Hg) des poissons des quatre plus grands lacs aquitains (Hourtin-Carcans, Lacanau, Cazaux-Sanguinet et Parentis-Biscarrosse) a montré que les concentrations de mercure chez le sandre (Sander lucioperca) des lacs d’Hourtin-Carcans et de Lacanau dépassaient la recommandation alimentaire de l’OMS de 0,5 mg Hg.kg-1 poids frais (WHO 1990). Cette contamination pouvant constituer un risque potentiel pour la santé humaine, un arrêté préfectoral a été émis interdisant la consommation de sandres pêchés dans ces lacs. L’objectif principal de cette étude est de comprendre l’origine de cette contamination. Les résultats obtenus montrent un gradient croissant des concentrations en Hg du sud vers le nord, dans la chair des poissons piscivores. Les concentrations en Hg atmosphérique mesurées ponctuellement ou accumulées dans les bryophytes terrestres (mousses) autour des lacs sont caractéristiques d’environnements dits « éloignés et vierges » de toutes sources significatives de contamination. D'autres facteurs pouvant expliquer ce gradient de contamination chez les poissons ont été étudiés comme le rôle des plantes aquatiques. Aucun des facteurs étudiés ne peut expliquer ces différences. Seul un important gradient de sulfate sud-nord a été identifié dans les eaux et les sédiments des quatre lacs. La présence de ces sulfates favorise le développement de microorganismes sulfato-réducteurs responsables de la production de méthylmercure. Cette production accrue de méthylmercure dans les lacs médocains (Hourtin-Carcans et Lacanau) semble responsable de la forte accumulation de ce métal dans les poissons piscivores de ces lacs. La production de cette forme organique du Hg se fait principalement au niveau du biofilm périphytique présent à la surface des plantes et du sédiment organique. L’excès de sulfate dans les lacs médocains provient du bassin versant, et en particulier des zones agricoles. Les risques sanitaires liés à la consommation de poissons carnivores des lacs médocains sont avérés et leur consommation est fortement déconseillée pour les personnes les plus vulnérables (femmes enceintes et enfants). Les autres personnes adultes peuvent les consommer raisonnablement. In 2013, a study of ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) on mercury (Hg) contamination of fish from the four largest Aquitaine Lakes (Hourtin-Carcans, Lacanau, Cazaux-Sanguinet and Parentis-Biscarrosse Lakes) showed that zander (Sander lucioperca), a carnivorous fish from Hourtin-Carcans and Lacanau Lakes had Hg levels exceeding the current consumption guideline (0.5 mg Hg. kg-1 wet weight). Following this contamination, a prefectural decree banned the consumption of zander caught in these lakes. The aim of this study was to understand the source of this contamination. The results of the project show an increasing Hg concentration gradient from the southernmost lake to north in the flesh of carnivorous fishes. Atmospheric Hg concentrations measured locally and accumulated in terrestrial bryophytes (mosses) around lakes are characteristic of so-called "remote and pristine" environments from all significant sources of contamination. Other factors that may explain this gradient of contamination in fish have been studied, such as the role of aquatic plants. None of the factors studied can explain differences among lakes. On the other hand, a significant south-north sulphate gradient has been found in the water and sediments of the four lakes. The presence of sulphate promotes the development of sulphate-reducing microorganisms in part responsible for the production of methylmercury. This increased production of methylmercury in the northern lakes (Hourtin-Carcans and Lacanau Lakes) seems responsible for the greatest accumulation of this metal in the carnivorous fishes of these lakes. The development of these microorganisms takes place mainly in the biofilm present on the surface of plants and organic sediment, also called periphyton. High sulphate concentrations resulted from agricultural activity in the Hourtin-Carcans Lake catchment. Our study found that it is strongly discouraged to consume carnivorous fishes from Hourtin-Carcans and Lacanau Lakes for vulnerable people (pregnant women and children).

In order to accommodate new back-end electronics of upgraded CMS sub-detectors, a new FEROL40 card in the microTCA standard has been developed. The main function of the FEROL40 is to acquire event data over multiple point-to-point serial optical links, provide buffering, perform protocol conversion, and transmit multiple TCP/IP streams (4x10Gbps) to the Ethernet network of the aggregation layer of the CMS DAQ (data acquisition) event builder. This contribution discusses the design of the FEROL40 and experience from operation.

Abstract

International audience; The widespread use of facemasks throughout the population is recommended by the WHO to reduce transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As some regions of the world are facing mask shortages, reuse may be necessary. However, used masks are considered as a potential hazard that may spread and transmit disease if they are not decontaminated correctly and systematically before reuse. As a result, the inappropriate decontamination practices that are commonly witnessed in the general public are challenging management of the epidemic at a large scale. To achieve public acceptance and implementation, decontamination procedures need to be low-cost and simple. We propose the use of hot hygroscopic materials to decontaminate non-medical facemasks in household settings. We report on the inactivation of a viral load on a facial mask exposed to hot hygroscopic materials for 15 minutes. As opposed to recent academic studies whereby decontamination is achieved by maintaining heat and humidity above a given value, a more flexible procedure is proposed here using a slow decaying pattern, which is both effective and easier to implement, suggesting straightforward public deployment and hence reliable implementation by the population.
