The significance and cause of the decline in biomass burning across the Americas after ad 1500 is a topic of considerable debate. We synthesized charcoal records (a proxy for biomass burning) from the Americas and from the remainder of the globe over the past 2000 years, and compared these with paleoclimatic records and population reconstructions. A distinct post-ad 1500 decrease in biomass burning is evident, not only in the Americas, but also globally, and both are similar in duration and timing to ‘Little Ice Age’ climate change. There is temporal and spatial variability in the expression of the biomass-burning decline across the Americas but, at a regional–continental scale, ‘Little Ice Age’ climate change was likely more important than indigenous population collapse in driving this decline. Background/aims: Recent decades have seen significant advances in both structural and functional testing of retinal disease. However, the current clinical value of specific testing modalities, as well as future trends, need to be clearly identified in order to highlight areas for further development in routine care and clinical trials., Methods: We designed a modified two-round Delphi study to obtain the opinion of a multidisciplinary group of 33 international experts involved in the field of retinal disease management/research to determine the level of agreement and consensus regarding the value and performance of specific structural and functional testing methods for retinal disease. On a Likert scale, a median of 1-2 indicated disagreement with the statement, and 5-6 indicated agreement with the statement. An IQR of ≤2 indicated consensus in the responses. Several questions also allowed comments on responses., Results: There was overall agreement that structural testing currently predominates for detection and monitoring. There was moderate agreement that functional testing remains important and will continue to do so in the future because it provides complementary information. Certain respondents considered that properly designed and applied psychophysical tests are as reliable and repeatable as structural observations and that functional changes are the most important in the long run. Respondents considered future care and research to require a combination of structural and functional testing with strong consensus that the relative importance will depend on disease type and stage., Conclusion: The study obtained important insights from a group of international experts regarding current and future needs in the management of retinal disease using a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Cubanthonomus Anderson, new genus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Anthonomini) is here described to accommodate the Cuban species Cleogonus grossulus Suffrian, which was previously placed as incertae sedis within Cleogonini. The genus is characterized by head constricted behind the eyes, globose form, compact antennal funicle of seven antennomeres, base of pronotum strongly produced posteriorly at middle, elytra with rows of punctures (striae effaced), tarsal claws with small basal tooth, profemora with two teeth, meso- and metafemora with single small tooth. Specimens have been collected in tropical semideciduous forest but no host associations are known.

Late-onset peripheral neuropathy (LPN) is a heritable canine neuropathy commonly found in Labrador retrievers and is characterized by laryngeal paralysis and pelvic limb paresis. Our objective was to establish canine LPN as a model for human hereditary peripheral neuropathy by classifying it as either an axonopathy or myelinopathy and evaluating length-dependent degeneration. We conducted a motor nerve conduction study of the sciatic and ulnar nerves, electromyography (EMG) of appendicular and epaxial musculature, and histologic analysis of sciatic and recurrent laryngeal nerves in LPN-affected and control dogs. LPN-affected dogs exhibited significant decreases in compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude, CMAP area, and pelvic limb latencies. However, no differences were found in motor nerve conduction velocity, residual latencies, or CMAP duration. Distal limb musculature showed greater EMG changes in LPN-affected dogs. Histologically, LPN-affected dogs exhibited a reduction in the number of large-diameter axons, especially in distal nerve regions. In conclusion, LPN in Labrador retrievers is a common, spontaneous, length-dependent peripheral axonopathy that is a novel animal model of age-related peripheral neuropathy that could be used for fundamental research and clinical trials., (© 2024 The Authors. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether plasma neurofilament light chain (pNfL) concentration was altered in Labrador Retrievers with idiopathic laryngeal paralysis (ILP) compared to a control population. A secondary aim was to investigate relationships between age, height, weight, and body mass index in the populations studied., Animals: 123 dogs: 62 purebred Labrador Retrievers with ILP (ILP Cases) and 61 age-matched healthy medium- to large-breed dogs (Controls)., Methods: Dogs, recruited from August 1, 2016, to March 1, 2022, were categorized as case or control based on a combination of physical exam, neurologic exam, and history. Blood plasma was collected, and pNfL concentration was measured. pNfL concentrations were compared between ILP Cases and Controls. Covariables including age, height, and weight were collected. Relationships between pNfL and covariables were analyzed within and between groups. In dogs where 2 plasma samples were available from differing time points, pNfL concentrations were measured to evaluate alterations over time., Results: No significant difference in pNfL concentration was found between ILP Cases and Control (P = .36). pNfL concentrations had moderate negative correlations with weight and height in the Control group; other variables did not correlate with pNfL concentrations in ILP Case or Control groups. pNfL concentrations do not correlate with ILP disease status or duration in Labrador Retrievers., Clinical Relevance: There is no evidence that pNfL levels are altered due to ILP disease duration or progression when compared with healthy controls. When evaluating pNfL concentrations in the dog, weight and height should be considered.

Purpose: To measure achromatic spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal summation in dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) compared to healthy controls under conditions of photopic gaze-contingent perimetry., Methods: Twenty participants with dry AMD (mean age, 74.6 years) and 20 healthy controls (mean age, 67.8 years) performed custom, gaze-contingent perimetry tests. An area-modulation test generated localized estimates of Ricco's area (RA) at 2.5° and 5° eccentricities along the 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° meridians. Contrast thresholds were measured at the same test locations for stimuli of six durations (3.7-190.4 ms) with a Goldmann III stimulus (GIII, 0.43°) and RA-scaled stimuli. The upper limit (critical duration) of complete temporal summation (using the GIII stimulus) and spatiotemporal summation (using the RA stimuli) was estimated using iterative two-phase regression analysis., Results: Median (interquartile range [IQR]) RA estimates were significantly larger in AMD participants (2.5°: 0.21 [0.09-0.41] deg2; 5°: 0.32 [0.15-0.65 deg2]) compared to healthy controls (2.5°: 0.08 [0.05-0.13] deg2; 5°: 0.15 [0.08-0.22] deg2) at all test locations (all P < 0.05). No significant difference in median critical duration was found in AMD participants with the GIII stimulus (19.6 [9.9-30.4] ms) and RA-scaled stimuli (22.9 [13.9-40.3] ms) compared to healthy controls (GIII: 17.0 [11.3-24.0] ms; RA-scaled: 22.4 [14.3-33.1] ms) at all test locations (all P > 0.05)., Conclusions: Spatial summation is altered in dry AMD, without commensurate changes in temporal summation., Translational Relevance: The sensitivity of perimetry to AMD may be improved by utilizing stimuli that probe alterations in spatial summation in the disease.

Purpose: The relationship between perimetric stimulus area and Ricco's area (RA) determines measured thresholds and the sensitivity of perimetry to retinal disease. The nature of this relationship, in addition to effect of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) number on this, is currently unknown for the adaptation conditions of mesopic microperimetry. In this study, achromatic mesopic spatial summation was measured across the central visual field to estimate RA with the number of RGCs underlying RA also being established., Methods: Achromatic luminance thresholds were measured for six incremental spot stimuli (0.009-2.07 deg 2 ) and 190.4 ms duration, at four locations, each at 2.5°, 5° and 10° eccentricity in five healthy observers (mean age 61.4 years) under mesopic conditions (background 1.58 cd/m 2 ). RA was estimated using two-phase regression analysis with the number of RGCs underlying RA being calculated using normative histological RGC counts., Results: Ricco's area exhibited a small but statistically insignificant increase between 2.5° and 10° eccentricity. Compared with photopic conditions, RA was larger, with the difference between RA and the Goldmann III stimulus (0.43°) being minimised. RGC number underlying RA was also higher than reported for photopic conditions (median 70 cells, IQR 36-93), with no significant difference being observed across test locations., Conclusions: Ricco's area and the number of RGCs underlying RA do not vary significantly across the central visual field in mesopic conditions. However, RA is larger and more similar to the standard perimetric Goldmann III stimulus under mesopic compared with photopic adaptation conditions. Purpose: We have previously demonstrated the upper limit of complete spatial summation (Ricco's area) to increase in non-pathological axial myopia compared to non-myopic controls. This study sought to investigate whether temporal summation is also altered in axial myopia to determine if this aspect of visual function, like in glaucoma, is influenced by reductions in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density., Methods: Achromatic contrast thresholds were measured for a GIII-equivalent stimulus (0.43° diameter) of six different stimulus durations (1-24 frames, 1.1-187.8 ms) in 24 participants with axial myopia (mean spherical refractive error: -4.65D, range: -1.00D to -11.25D, mean age: 34.1, range: 21-57 years) and 21 age-similar non-myopic controls (mean spherical refractive error: +0.87D, range: -0.25D to +2.00D, mean age: 31.0, range: 18-55 years). Measurements were performed at 10° eccentricity along the 90°, 180°, 270° and 360° meridians on an achromatic 10 cd/m 2 background. The upper limit of complete temporal summation (critical duration, CD) was estimated from the data with iterative two-phase regression analysis., Results: There was no significant difference (p = 0.90, Mann-Whitney U-test) in median CD between myopes (median: 44.3 ms; IQR: 26.5, 51.2) and non-myopes (median: 41.6 ms; IQR: 27.3, 48.5). Despite RGC numbers underlying the stimulus being significantly lower in the myopic group (p < 0.001), no relationship was observed between the CD estimate and co-localised RGC number (Pearson's r = -0.13, p = 0.43) or ocular length (Pearson's r = -0.08, p = 0.61)., Conclusions: Unlike spatial summation, temporal summation is unchanged in myopia. This contrasts with glaucoma where both temporal and spatial summation are altered. As such, perimetric methods optimised to test for anomalies of temporal summation may provide a means to differentiate between conditions causing only a reduced RGC density (e.g., myopia), and pathological processes causing both a reduced RGC density and RGC dysfunction (e.g., glaucoma)., (© 2023 The Authors. Purpose: To investigate age-related changes of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and cone density, and their associations in healthy participants using a modified, narrow scan-angle Heidelberg Retina Angiograph (HRA2)., Methods: Retinal cones were imaged outside the fovea at 8.8° eccentricity and cone density was compared to ONL thickness measurements obtained by Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) at the same locations. Fifty-six eyes of 56 healthy participants with a median age (interquartile range, IQR) of 37 years (29-55) were included., Results: Median (IQR) cone count was 7,472 (7,188, 7,746) cones/mm 2 and median (IQR) ONL thickness was 56 (52, 60) µm for healthy participants. Both cone density and ONL thickness were negatively associated with age: cone density, R 2  = 0.16 (F(1,54) = 10.41, P = 0.002); ONL thickness, R 2  = 0.12 (F(1,54) = 7.41, P = 0.009). No significant association was seen between cone density and ONL thickness (R 2  = 0.03; F(1,54) = 1.66, P = 0.20)., Conclusion: Cone density was lower, and ONL thinner, in older compared to younger participants, therefore, image-based structural measures should be compared to age-related data. However, cone density and ONL thickness were not strongly associated, indicating that determinants of ONL thickness measurements other than cone density measurements, and including measurement error, have a major influence.

Toxorhinus amarillo Anderson, new species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae; Rhynchophorini), is here described from Ecuador (Cotopaxi, Biochoa Otonga). The species is compared to the other two species in the genus.

Cores from Searsville Lake within Stanford University's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, California, USA, are examined to identify a potential GSSP for the Anthropocene: core JRBP2018-VC01B (944.5 cm-long) and tightly correlated JRBP2018-VC01A (852.5 cm-long). Spanning from 1900 CE ± 3 years to 2018 CE, a secure chronology resolved to the sub-annual level allows detailed exploration of the Holocene-Anthropocene transition. We identify the primary GSSP marker as first appearance of 239,240 Pu (372-374 cm) in JRBP2018-VC01B and designate the GSSP depth as the distinct boundary between wet and dry season at 366 cm (6 cm above the first sample containing 239,240 Pu) and corresponding to October-December 1948 CE. This is consistent with a lag of 1-2 years between ejection of 239,240 Pu into the atmosphere and deposition. Auxiliary markers include: first appearance of 137 Cs in 1958; late 20th-century decreases in δ 15 N; late 20th-century elevation in SCPs, Hg, Pb, and other heavy metals; and changes in abundance and presence of ostracod, algae, rotifer and protozoan microfossils. Fossil pollen document anthropogenic landscape changes related to logging and agriculture. As part of a major university, the Searsville site has long been used for research and education, serves users locally to internationally, and is protected yet accessible for future studies and communication about the Anthropocene., Plain Word Summary: The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the proposed Anthropocene Series/Epoch is suggested to lie in sediments accumulated over the last ~120 years in Searsville Lake, Woodside, California, USA. The site fulfills all of the ideal criteria for defining and placing a GSSP. In addition, the Searsville site is particularly appropriate to mark the onset of the Anthropocene, because it was anthropogenic activities-the damming of a watershed-that created a geologic record that now preserves the very signals that can be used to recognize the Anthropocene worldwide., (© The Author(s) 2023.)

Objectives: Research and evidence-based medicine (EBM) education are important elements of emergency medicine (EM) residency training; however, curricular time is limited and integrating novel strategies to engage learners and improve understanding of complex concepts is challenging. We sought to develop a unique research escape hunt educational experience to teach EM residents basic research and EBM skills using an active-learning, team-based strategy., Methods: A nine-station escape room-scavenger hunt was designed around educational content including (1) predictive statistics and diagnostic test characteristics, (2) interpretation of data and statistical analysis, (3) study design, (4) informed consent for research, and (5) the ethical principles guiding research. Stations required participants to use a variety of strategies to solve puzzles, with a correct response required to progress through the escape hunt. Teams worked together to solve each station's puzzles, with opportunities to reinforce the content in real time. Subsequent sessions were presented in a virtual format using Zoom breakout rooms over the past 2 years., Results: Postactivity assessments were grounded in Kirkpatrick's model and focused on participants' reactions, learning, and behavior. Participants reported high levels of satisfaction (100% [21/21] "satisfied" or "extremely satisfied") and engagement (95% [20/21] "engaged" or "very engaged") with the activity, as well as increased comfort with the research and EBM concepts covered (91% [19/21] "agree" or "strongly agree" increased comfort), and demonstrated improvements in knowledge across each content area presented (91% [19/21])., Reflective Discussion: This practical, team-based curriculum was found to be a successful way to engage residents with research methodology and EBM content. Thirty species of Curculionoidea (28 Curculionidae and one each of Brentidae and Nemonychidae) are reported as new records from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, most of them from the island of Newfoundland. As well, 13 species of Curculionidae and one of Brentidae previously recorded from Newfoundland are newly reported from Labrador, and one Curculionidae previously recorded from Labrador is newly reported from Newfoundland. The Palearctic species, Orthochaetessetiger ([Beck]), is herein reported as a new Canadian and North American record, with specimens documented from Newfoundland and British Columbia. Additions to the primary key for North American weevils are provided to help identify this genus among the North American fauna. Of the species of Curculionoidea previously recorded from the province in published literature, there is uncertain evidence for the occurrence of 14 species in the province as a whole or in the Labrador portion. Seven species are hereby removed from the faunal list for the province. One of those, Trachodeshispidus (Linnaeus), is also removed from the Canadian faunal list. The rarely collected North American endemic genus Proctorus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Ellescini) has hitherto contained two described species, P.armatus LeConte, 1876 and P.decipiens (LeConte, 1876). Here, Proctorus is revised and two new species, namely P.emarginatus sp. nov. and P.truncatus sp. nov. , are described. Lectotypes for P.armatus and P.decipiens are designated from known syntypes. All four species in the genus are associated with Salicaceae, but, in addition to differences in external and genital morphology, there is also evidence of differing host plant usage between the species. A photographic key to the four species is provided to facilitate identification.

Two new Brazilian species of the genus Coelocephalapion Wagner, 1914 placed in the C. nodicorne species-group (Brentidae: Apioninae) reared from Euphorbiaceae are described and illustrated: Coelocephalapion paleariae sp. n. (Type locality: Botucatu, São Paulo state; reared from seeds Croton glandulosus L.) and Coelocephalapion geraldinhoi sp. n. (Type locality: Dores do Indaiá, Minas Gerais state; reared from leaf galls on Croton antisyphiliticus Mart.). Aside from species descriptions, we also provide a key to species of the C. nodicorne species-group.

Purpose: There are several indirect methods used to estimate retinal ganglion cell (RGC) count in an individual eye, but there is limited information as to the agreement between these methods. In this work, RGC receptive field (RGC-RF) count underlying a spot stimulus (0.43°, Goldmann III) was calculated and compared using three different methods., Methods: RGC-RF count was calculated at a retinal eccentricity of 2.32 mm for 44 healthy adult participants (aged 18-58 years, refractive error -9.75 DS to +1.75 DS) using: (i) functional measures of achromatic peripheral grating resolution acuity (PGRA), (ii) structural measures of RGC-layer thickness (OCT-model, based on the method outlined by Raza and Hood) and (iii) scaling published histology density data to simulate a global expansion in myopia (Histology-Balloon)., Results: Whilst average RGC-RF counts from the OCT-model (median 105.3, IQR 99.6-111.0) and the Histology-Balloon model (median 107.5, IQR 97.7-114.6) were similar, PGRA estimates were approximately 65% lower (median 37.7, IQR 33.8-46.0). However, there was poor agreement between all three methods (Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement; PGRA/OCT: 55.4; PGRA/Histology-Balloon 59.3; OCT/Histology-Balloon: 52.4). High intersubject variability in RGC-RF count was evident using all three methods., Conclusions: The lower PGRA RGC-RF counts may be the result of targeting only a specific subset of functional RGCs, as opposed to the coarser approach of the OCT-model and Histology-Balloon, which include all RGCs, and also likely displaced amacrine cells. In the absence of a 'ground truth', direct measure of RGC-RF count, it is not possible to determine which method is most accurate, and each has limitations. However, what is clear is the poor agreement found between the methods prevents direct comparison of RGC-RF counts between studies utilising different methodologies and highlights the need to utilise the same method in longitudinal work., (© 2022 The Authors. Drivers have different visual demands across varying contrast and luminance conditions. However, vision assessments for driving are typically conducted under photopic conditions. This study investigated the sensitivity of photopic and mesopic conditions to detect contrast sensitivity (CS) loss in drivers with simulated media opacities. CS was measured in forty-seven healthy drivers aged 18-50 years (mean ± SD: 25.5 ± 6.5) under photopic and mesopic-adapted luminance levels with the Pelli-Robson chart and the Mesotest II (without glare). Media opacities were simulated using white-opacity containing Lee Fog filters (1-5) and CS measured in a randomised order. A significant (p < 0.001) reduction in photopic CS (logCS) was measured with the Pelli-Robson chart only when media opacity was simulated with Fog filter 5 (1.53 ± 0.15, 2.8 triplets reduction) compared to baseline (1.95 ± 0.03). Mean mesopic CS demonstrated a significant (all p < 0.001) reduction from baseline (1.67 ± 0.14) for Fog filters 3 (1.4 triplets, 1.45 ± 0.16), 4 (2.4 triplets, 1.31 ± 0.14) and 5 (4.3 triplets, 1.02 ± 0.15). For Mesotest II, only Fog filter 5 produced a significant reduction (0.10 ± 0.09; p < 0.001) in mean mesopic CS from baseline (0.30 ± 0.01). Mesopic CS is more vulnerable to different levels of simulated media opacity, hence should be considered clinically when assessing visual function in older drivers at risk of media opacity., (© 2022. The originally monobasic genus Crostis Casey, 1922 (type species Crostis subexplanata Casey, 1922 from Brazil) is redefined based on two named and approximately 15 unnamed species occurring between the southern United States and northern Argentina. Three oblong-ovate northern species here grouped informally as the Crostis boreas species group are described: Crostis boreas Prena Anderson new species from Arkansas and Texas in the U.S.A. and Quertaro and Tamaulipas in Mexico, Crostis boreodes Prena Anderson new species from Guanajuato and Michoacn in Mexico, and Crostis caperata Prena Anderson new species from Chiapas in Mexico. The South American Baridius thoracicus Kirsch, 1875 is transferred from Lamprobaris Champion, 1908 to Crostis, as Crostis thoracica (Kirsch) new combination.

Purpose: The Moorfields Acuity Chart (MAC)-comprising pseudo-high-pass filtered "vanishing optotype" (VO) letters-is more sensitive to functional visual loss in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) compared to conventional letter charts. It is currently unknown the degree to which MAC acuity is affected by optical factors such as cataract. This is important to know when determining whether an individual's vision loss owes more to neural or optical factors. Here we estimate recognition acuity for VOs and conventional letters with simulated lens aging, achieved using different levels of induced intraocular light scatter., Methods: Recognition thresholds were determined for two experienced and one naive participant with conventional and VO letters. Stimuli were presented either foveally or at 10 degrees in the horizontal temporal retina, under varying degrees of intraocular light scatter induced by white resin opacity-containing filters (WOFs grades 1 to 5)., Results: Foveal acuity only became significantly different from baseline (no filter) for WOF grade 5 with conventional letters and WOF grades 4 and 5 with VOs. In the periphery, no statistical difference was found for any stray-light level for both conventional and VOs., Conclusions: Recognition acuity measured with conventional and VOs is robust to the effects of simulated lens opacification, and thus its higher sensitivity to neural damage should not simultaneously be confounded by such optical factors., Translational Relevance: The MAC may be better able to differentiate between neural and optical deficits of visual performance, making it more suitable for the assessment of patients with AMD, who may display both types of functional visual loss.

Four new species of Central and South American Rhodobaenus LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae) are described: R. chamorroae Anderson, new species (type locality Colombia, Valle del Cauca), R. flecha Anderson, new species (type locality Costa Rica, Cartago), R. howdenorum Anderson, new species (type locality Ecuador, Rio Palenque), and Rhodobaenus schusteri Anderson, new species (type locality Guatemala, Zacapa). Diagnostic characters and images are provided for all new species to facilitate identification. The previously unknown male of Rhodobaenus tenorio Anderson is here described, and the species, previously only known from Costa Rica, is here recorded from Guatemala.

A new eyeless cave-inhabiting species of the weevil genus Lymantes Schoenherr (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Molytinae: Lymantini) is described. Lymantes reddelli Anderson, new species, occurs in caves in Bexar and Travis Counties, Texas, United States of America. The new species is very similar to Lymantes nadineae Anderson but is found in caves south of the Colorado River whereas L. nadineae is only known from caves north of the Colorado River. Characters of external morphology and male genitalia to separate the species are given.

Objective: To quantify the change in quality of life, disease-specific indicators, health and lifestyle before and during the COVID-19 pandemic among people with musculoskeletal diagnoses and symptoms., Methods: We undertook an additional follow-up of two existing UK registers involving people with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and participants in a trial in the UK who had regional pain and were identified at high risk of developing chronic widespread pain. Participants completed the study questionnaire between July and December 2020, throughout which time there were public health restrictions in place., Results: The number of people taking part in the study was 1054 (596 axSpA, 162 PsA, 296 regional pain). In comparison with their previous (pre-pandemic) assessment, there was an age-adjusted significant, small decrease in quality of life measured by EQ-5D [-0.020 (95% CI -0.030, -0.009)] overall and across all population groups examined. This was primarily related to poorer mental health and pain. There was a small increase in fibromyalgia symptoms, but a small decrease in sleep problems. There was a small deterioration in axSpA disease activity, and disease-specific quality of life and anxiety in PsA participants. Predictors of poor quality of life were similar pre- and during the pandemic. The effect of lockdown on activity differed according to age, gender and deprivation., Conclusion: Important lessons include focusing on addressing anxiety and providing enhanced support for self-management in the absence of normal health care being available, and awareness that all population groups are likely to be affected., (© The Author(s) 2021. Green stimuli are more difficult to detect than red stimuli in the retinal periphery, as reported previously. We examined the spatial characteristics of chromatic mechanisms using stimuli, modulated from an achromatic background to each pole of the "red-green" cardinal axis in DKL space at 20 deg eccentricity. The "blue-yellow" cardinal axis was also studied for comparison. By measuring both grating discrimination at the resolution limit (resolution acuity) and spatial summation, assessed by the Michaelis-Menten function, we demonstrated a marked "red-green" asymmetry. The resolution acuity was worse and spatial summation more extended for "green" compared to "red" stimuli, while showing significant individual variations. Ricco's area was also measured, but not determined for "green" spots because of the poor small stimuli detection. These results cannot be explained by differences in L- and M-cone numerosity and/or spatial arrangement, but rather have postreceptoral origin, probably at the cortical level.

Photosynthetic algae represent a large, diverse bioresource potential. Yellow-green algae of the genus Tribonema are candidates for production of biofuels and other bioproducts. We report on a filamentous isolate from an outdoor raceway polyculture growing on municipal reclaimed wastewater which we classified as T. minus. Over one year of cultivation in 3.5 m 2 raceway ponds fed by reclaimed municipal wastewater, T. minus cultures were more productive than the native algal polycultures, with annual average productivities of 15.9 ± 0.3 and 13.4 ± 0.4 g/m 2 /day, respectively. The biochemical composition of T. minus biomass grown outdoors was constant year-round, with 28.3 ± 0.4% carbohydrates, 37.6 ± 0.7% proteins, and 6.1 ± 0.3% fatty acids (measured as methyl esters), with up to 4.0% of the valuable omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid, on an ash-free dry-weight basis. A very large, new, and distinctive species of Conotrachelus Dejean is described from Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Conotrachelus terryerwini sp. nov. (type locality Volcan Orosi, Estación Biológica Maritza, Guanacaste, Costa Rica) is described and named in honor of Terry L. Erwin (1940-2020), famed carabidologist and biodiversity champion. This majestic species is easily distinguished by its large body size (15-20 mm) and extremely long rostrum (especially in females).

Two new species of South American Metamasius Horn (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae) are described: Metamasius onorei new species from Cotopaxi, Ecuador and Metamasius pilirostris new species from west of Río Yurumangui, Colombia. Diagnostic characters and images are provided for both new species to facilitate identification.

The rehab services of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology (PT/OT/SLP) are areas of emerging practice in the emergency department (ED). These specialty consult services can provide ED physicians with valuable, nuanced assessments for the older adults that will assist in determining a safe discharge plan. PT and OT interventions in the ED have been shown to decrease hospital admissions and readmissions, increase patient satisfaction, and decrease cost. The weevil genera Aethiopacorep Voisin and Titilayo Cristóvão Lyal are the only native African members of the nearly pantropical and poorly known tribe Anchonini. All Anchonini are flightless, a trait likely limiting dispersal, yet these weevils are found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. A phylogenetic analysis of 79 terminals and 3248 aligned positions from one mitochondrial and two nuclear ribosomal fragments supports a clade of West African Anchonini nested within American Anchonini. As suggested by previous authors, the Asian genera Himalanchonus Zherikhin and Otibazo Morimoto do not form a clade with the tribe's core, and along with Cycloterinus Kolbe, Euthycodes Pascoe, Leptanchonus Morimoto, Nepalanchonus Zherikhin, and Tanyomus Champion, are here removed from Anchonini and placed as Molytinae incertae sedis. So defined, the monophyletic tribe Anchonini contains 36 genus-group names, all but two denoting American taxa. Using molecular clock analysis, we estimate the separation of the West African Anchonini from its American sister at 9.5-5.2 million years ago (Ma). This date greatly postdates the Cretaceous opening of the Atlantic Ocean (about 100 Ma) and, therefore, evokes a single transatlantic dispersal to West Africa, likely by over-water rafting, leading to subsequent diversification. We postulate this to be the first documented eastwards crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by terrestrial non-volant arthropods based on morphological and molecular data.

We investigated the classical question of why visual acuity decreases with decreasing retinal illuminance by holding retinal eccentricity fixed while illumination varied. Our results indicate that acuity is largely independent of illuminance at any given retinal location, which suggests that under classical free-viewing conditions acuity improves as illumination increases from rod threshold to rod saturation because the retinal location of the stimulus is permitted to migrate from a peripheral location of maximum sensitivity but poor acuity to the foveal location of maximum acuity but poor sensitivity. Comparison with anatomical sampling density of retinal neurons suggests that mesopic acuity at all eccentricities and scotopic acuity for eccentricities beyond about 20° is limited by the spacing of midget ganglion cells. In central retina, however, scotopic acuity is further limited by spatial filtering due to spatial summation within the large, overlapping receptive fields of the A-II class of amacrine cells interposed in the rod pathway between rod bipolars and midget ganglion cells. Our results offer a mechanistic interpretation of the clinical metrics for low-luminance visual dysfunction used to monitor progression of retinal disease.

This study demonstrates significant differences between the area of complete spatial summation (Ricco's area, RA) in eyes with and without non-pathological, axial myopia. Contrast thresholds were measured for six stimuli (0.01-2.07 deg 2 ) presented at 10º eccentricity in 24 myopic subjects and 20 age-similar non-myopic controls, with RA estimated using iterative two-phase regression analysis. To explore the effects of axial length-induced variations in retinal image size (RIS) on the measurement of RA, refractive error was separately corrected with (i) trial lenses at the anterior focal point (near constant inter-participant RIS in mm), and (ii) contact lenses (RIS changed with axial length). For spectacle corrected measurements, RA was significantly larger in the myopic group, with a significant positive correlation also being observed between RA and measures of co-localised peripheral ocular length. With contact lens correction, there was no significant difference in RA between the groups and no relationship with peripheral ocular length. The results suggest RA changes with axial elongation in myopia to compensate for reduced retinal ganglion cell density. Furthermore, as these changes are only observed when axial length induced variations in RIS are accounted for, they may reflect a functional adaptation of the axially-myopic visual system to an enlarged RIS.

One-hundred-eleven new provincial and territorial Coleoptera records are reported from New Brunswick (64), Nova Scotia (20), Prince Edward Island (5), Quebec (14), Manitoba (3), British Columbia (3), and Yukon Territory (2) for the 26 following families: Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Histeridae, Staphylinidae, Scarabaeidae, Buprestidae, Eucnemidae, Elateridae, Cantharidae, Erotylidae, Monotomidae, Cryptophagidae, Passandridae (first record of this family from New Brunswick), Laemophloeidae, Nitidulidae, Anamorphidae, Coccinellidae, Latridiidae, Mordellidae, Tenebrionidae, Cerambycidae, Chrysomelidae, Anthribidae, Brentidae, Dryophthoridae, and Curculionidae. Among these are ten new Canadian records: Heterosternuta oppositus (Say, 1823) (Dytiscidae) (New Brunswick), Gyrophaena blatchleyi Seevers, 1951 (Staphylinidae) (Quebec), Acropteroxys lecontei Crotch, 1873 (Erotylidae) (Manitoba), Placonotus falinorum Thomas, 2011 (Laemophloeidae) (Quebec), Adelina pallida (Say, 1824) (Tenebrionidae) (Quebec), Poecilocera harrisii (J.L. LeConte, 1851) (Chrysomelidae) (New Brunswick), Plesiobaris albilata (LeConte, 1876) (Curculionidae) (Quebec, New Brunswick), Pseudopityophthorus asperulus (LeConte, 1868) (Curculionidae) (Nova Scotia), Hylurgops palliatus (Gyllenhal, 1813) (Curculionidae) (New Brunswick), and Heteroborips seriatus (Blandford, 1894) (Curculionidae) (Nova Scotia). Plesiobaris disjuncta Casey reported as new for Canada in New Brunswick and Quebec by Webster et al. (2012a) is actually P. albilata (LeConte) and thus P. disjuncta is removed from the faunal list of Canada. Eleven species from New Brunswick not previously reported in literature were found on the online platforms BugGuide.Net and iNaturalist and are reported in this publication. This highlights the importance of online platforms dedicated to recording wildlife observations and citizen science in detecting new species records. Data is also presented for seven species from Quebec and two species from New Brunswick reported by Bousquet et al. (2013) without any supporting information for their occurrence in these provinces. Among the species reported here, 32 are adventive.

Purpose: To determine the test-retest reliability and diagnostic accuracy of a binocular optical coherence tomography (OCT) prototype (Envision Diagnostics, El Segundo, California, USA) for pupillometry., Design: Assessment of diagnostic reliability and accuracy., Methods: Fifty participants with relative afferent pupillary defects (RAPDs) confirmed using the swinging flashlight method (mean age 49.6 years) and 50 healthy control subjects (mean age 31.3 years) were examined. Participants twice underwent an automated pupillometry examination using a binocular OCT system that presents a stimulus and simultaneously captures OCT images of the iris-pupil plane of both eyes. Participants underwent a single examination on the RAPDx (Konan Medical, Irvine, California, USA), an automated infrared pupillometer. Pupil parameters including maximum and minimum diameter, and anisocoria were measured. The magnitude of RAPD was calculated using the log of the ratio of the constriction amplitude between the eyes. A pathological RAPD was above ±0.5 log units on both devices., Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient was >0.90 for OCT-derived maximum pupil diameter, minimum pupil diameter, and anisocoria. The RAPDx had a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 94% for detection of RAPD whereas the binocular OCT had a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 86%. The diagnostic accuracy of the RAPDx and binocular OCT was 88% (95% confidence interval 80%-94%) and 80% (95% confidence interval 71%-87%) respectively., Conclusions: Binocular OCT-derived pupil parameters had excellent test-retest reliability. The diagnostic accuracy of RAPD was inferior to the RAPDx and is likely related to factors such as eye movement during OCT capture. Food politics and economic forces may determine the macro conditions for food supply, but the local environment has the most substantial impact on population health. Food security is determined not only by the basic availability of food, but also by social, economic, and cultural factors influencing dietary behaviors. This paper investigates the role of social institutions, specifically social capital, in affecting food security by proposing a theoretical linkage between social capital and health behavior, and an illustrative case is provided. Social capital, defined as the value of the bonding, bridging, and linking relationships between people, is well demonstrated to be related to health. Many mechanisms link social capital to health, including shared access to food and nutritional behaviors. Further, social capital influences health through social status and race. This paper further investigates the links between minority status, food security, social capital, and health. The analysis draws on empirical work in North Carolina with community gardens, faith communities, the local food environment, and other social capital-related variables. By investigating the nature of local food security, particularly for minority populations, this analysis allows for better integration of local conditions with global food politics.
