Background/objectivesSeveral studies have linked dietary patterns to insulin sensitivity and systemic inflammation, which affect risk of multiple chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary patterns of a cohort of older adults, and to examine relationships of dietary patterns with markers of insulin sensitivity and systemic inflammation.Subjects/methodsThe Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study is a prospective cohort study of 3075 older adults. In Health ABC, multiple indicators of glucose metabolism and systemic inflammation were assessed. Food intake was estimated with a modified Block food frequency questionnaire. In this study, dietary patterns of 1751 participants with complete data were derived by cluster analysis.ResultsSix clusters were identified, including a 'healthy foods' cluster, characterized by higher intake of low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables. In the main analysis, the 'healthy foods' cluster had significantly lower fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance values than the 'breakfast cereal' and 'high-fat dairy products' clusters, and lower fasting glucose than the 'high-fat dairy products' cluster (P≤0.05). No differences were found in 2-h glucose. With respect to inflammation, the 'healthy foods' cluster had lower interleukin-6 than the 'sweets and desserts' and 'high-fat dairy products' clusters, and no differences were seen in C-reactive protein or tumor necrosis factor-α.ConclusionsA dietary pattern high in low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables may be associated with greater insulin sensitivity and lower systemic inflammation in older adults.

This paper presents the results of the studies about the Fourth Generation Reactors developed at DENU-UFMG, such as the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR), Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) and Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR). These studies evaluate neutronic parameters of the nuclear system at steady state and during the burnup using computer models developed at DENU-UFMG using SCALE 6.0 (KENO-VI/ORIGENS), MCNPX 2.6.0 and MCNP5. The results show that the adopted methodologies confirm the capabilities of the codes to simulate specific situations in steady state or transient operating conditions.

Electric consumption prediction methods are investigated for many reasons, such as decision-making related to energy efficiency as well as for anticipating demand and the dynamics of the energy market. The objective of the present work is to compare two Deep Learning models, namely the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model, and the Bi-directional LSTM (BLSTM) for univariate electric consumption Time Series (TS) short-term forecast model. The Data Sets (DSs) were selected for their different contexts and scales, with the goal of assessing the robustness of the models. Four DSs were used, related to the power consumption of: (a) a household in France; (b) a university building in Santarém, Brazil; (c) the Tétouan city zones, in Morocco; and (d) the aggregated electric demand of Singapore. The metrics RMSE, MAE, MAPE and R2 were calculated in a TS cross-validation scheme. Friedman’s test was applied to normalized RMSE (NRMSE) results, showing that BLSTM outperforms LSTM with statistically significant difference (p = 0.0455), corroborating the fact that bidirectional weight updating significantly improves the LSTM performance with respect to different scales of electric power consumption. The present work provides statistical evidence supporting the conclusion that BLSTM outperforms LSTM models according to the tests performed, based on a complete methodology for TS prediction, and also establishes a baseline for future investigation of electric consumption TS prediction.

BNP is the unique cardiac marker that reflects not as much as the degree of heart muscle damage, but mostly the severity of hemodynamic disorder, which is important in congenital heart disease. The only disadvantage of this marker is the barely studied reference values for children. It is known that the younger the child is, the higher the BNP value will be. By shifting from interpreting the absolute values towards the application of zlog-transformed data in clinical practice, we can overcome the above problems.

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are among the best methods of Artificial Intelligence, especially in computer vision, where convolutional neural networks play an important role. There are numerous architectures of DNNs, but for image processing, U-Net offers great performance in digital processing tasks such as segmentation of organs, tumors, and cells for supporting medical diagnoses. In the present work, an assessment of U-Net models is proposed, for the segmentation of computed tomography of the lung, aiming at comparing networks with different parameters. In this study, the models scored 96% Dice Similarity Coefficient on average, corroborating the high accuracy of the U-Net for segmentation of tomographic images.

Image segmentation is one of the main resources in computer vision. Nowadays, this procedure can be made with high precision using Deep Learning, and this fact is important to applications of several research areas including medical image analysis. Image segmentation is currently applied to find tumors, bone defects and other elements that are crucial to achieve accurate diagnoses. The objective of the present work is to verify the influence of parameters variation on U-Net, a Deep Convolutional Neural Network with Deep Learning for biomedical image segmentation. The dataset was obtained from Kaggle website (www.kaggle.com) and contains 267 volumes of lung computed tomography scans, which are composed of the 2D images and their respective masks (ground truth). The dataset was subdivided in 80% of the volumes for training and 20% for testing. The results were evaluated using the Dice Similarity Coefficient as metric and the value 84% was the mean obtained for the testing set, applying the best parameters considered.

ABSTRACT Aristolochia hypoglauca and A. paulistana (Aristolochiaceae) are two species that inhabit the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. They highly resemble each other especially on the size and overall shape of the caudate perianth, which causes confusion in herbaria determinations. We applied geometric morphometrics (GM) to overcome this taxonomic uncertainty. GM was based on the landmark method applied to leaves of all specimens available mostly in Brazilian herbaria. The GM results supported the recognition of the two species, as the two principal components were responsible for 94.97% of the variation assessed through the principal component analysis (PCA). The Discriminant Function and the Cross-validation tests resulted in the maximum percentage of correctly classified cases (100%). The Procrustes distance (0.2252; p< 0.0001), and the Mahalanobis Distance (8.4473; p< 0.0001) provide statistical support for leaf shape differences with taxonomic significance. Thus, we revisit the taxonomy and comparative morphology of both species, and compare them with other Aristolochia species with caudate floral limb native to Brazil, and commented the phenology, distribution and habitat, and conservation status. Additionally, we proposed the epitypification of A. hypoglauca, given that the holotype does not fulfill the purpose of precise application of the name.

This paper reports easy and fast synthesis of PbMoO4 nanocrystals by microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MH) method at different synthesis times (1, 10, 30 and 60 min) at 100 °C. X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopy confirm all characteristics of diffraction peaks and active vibrational modes of the pure scheelite structure (tetragonal, I41/a) for all synthesized PbMoO4 nanocrystals. The optical bandgap calculated directly from the samples is close to 3.5 eV. The images collected by scanning electron microscopy show particles with mean length from 159.90(8) nm to 303.02(3) nm with greater exposure of planes (111), (100), (011) and (110). The photocatalytic activity of PbMoO4 nanocrystals against RhB and RBBR dyes resulted in successful degradation in short time intervals using ultraviolet light, where the best performance was achieved for the PbMoO4-10 sample, which was 29.2 and 51.8 times more effective than photolysis. The contribution of oxidant species was monitored by radical scavengers, which confirms that holes (h+) are the main oxidative species in photodegradation of RhB and RBBR dyes, while reuse of the catalyst against RhB and RBBR dyes confirms high stability of the catalyst, although recycled four times.

Abstract: Global media have reported widely on the (in)actions of the Brazilian federal government, particularly of president Jair Bolsonaro, in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper aims to describe media representations in terms of their transitivity choices (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) and to discuss how emerged language patterns may be indicative of particular ways life and death have been controlled in terms of a coupled conceptualization between biopolitics (FOUCAULT, 2008) and necropolitics (MBEMBE, 2019) which we call necrobiopolitics. Overall results indicate how the death of babies and mothers, the collapse of hospital and health service, the spike in hunger, the dismissal of the severity of the pandemic, and the purposeful delay in purchasing vaccines are instrumental in the way president Jair Bolsonaro has implemented a political agenda that defines whose lives are worthy and whose deaths are tolerated. Resumo: A mídia global tem noticiado amplamente as (in)ações do governo federal brasileiro, em particular do presidente Jair Bolsonaro, no enfrentamento da pandemia de COVID-19. Este artigo objetiva descrever representações midiáticas em termos de suas escolhas de transitividade (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) e discutir como os padrões de linguagem emergentes podem ser indicativos de maneiras particulares de como a vida e a morte foram controladas em termos de uma conceituação combinada entre biopolítica (FOUCAULT, 2008) e necropolítica (MBEMBE, 2019) que chamamos de necrobiopolítica. Os resultados gerais indicam como a morte de bebês e de mães, o colapso da rede de hospitais e do serviço de saúde, o aumento da fome, a negação da gravidade da pandemia e o atraso proposital na compra de vacinas são fundamentais na forma como o presidente Jair Bolsonaro implementou uma agenda política que define quais vidas têm valor e quais mortes são toleradas. La Administración ha suscitado aportes valiosos para muchas áreas comerciales en diferentes partes del mundo, manteniendo un equilibrio económico de los países y favoreciendo las relaciones entre ellos. En este sentido, el objetivo de esta investigación es conocer la influencia de los saberes de la carrera de Administración de empresas en el sector agropecuario y como efecto reconocer la respuesta de esta ante las intervenciones del proceso administrativo en sus diferentes partes. Para ello, se elaboró un estudio descriptivo sobre el influjo que suscita la administración en el campo agrario a través del análisis de encuestas realizadas y la entrevista elaborada al Gerente Comercial de la empresa ILE C.A. Los resultados demuestran que varios empresarios agrónomos no implementan los conocimientos administrativos por dos motivos: por miedo a la responsabilidad que conlleva y por falta de instrucción de materias administrativas que ayudan a dirigir de una manera correcta las entidades empresariales. Por el contrario, existen personas que implementan estos saberes para aumentar su eficiencia y eficacia, respondiendo a la demanda del mercado que le exige al campo agropecuario. Se concluye que la administración juega un papel muy importante para el sector agrónomo, dado que ha evolucionado para mejorarlo y convertirlo en pilar fundamental de la economía de muchos países. Influence of the knowledge of the Career of Business Administration in the agricultural sector ABSTRACT The Administration has made valuable contributions to many commercial areas in different parts of the world, maintaining an economic balance between countries and favoring relations between them. In this sense, the objective of this investigation is to know the influence of the knowledge of the career of Administration of companies in the agricultural sector and as effect to recognize the answer of the same one before the interventions the administrative process in its different parts. To this end, a descriptive study was prepared on the influence of administration in the agricultural field through the analysis of surveys conducted and the interview with the Commercial Manager of the company ILE C.A. The results show that several agronomists do not implement administrative knowledge for two reasons: for fear of the responsibility, it entails and for lack of instruction in administrative matters that help to manage business entities in a correct manner. On the contrary, there are people who implement this knowledge to increase its efficiency and effectiveness, responding to market demand that demands the agricultural field. It is concluded that administration plays a very important role for the agricultural sector, given that it has evolved to improve it and turn it into a fundamental pillar of the economy of many countries. Muitos agricultores familiares empregam o cooperativismo como uma ferramenta para o fortalecimento dos meios produtivos e vislumbram a diversificação produtiva como uma estratégia de geração de renda. Este estudo analisou o projeto de diversificação promovido pela CAPUL no ano de 2020, no município de Arinos – MG, com foco na produção de aves caipiras (Gallus domesticus) para abastecimento da demanda para alimentação escolar e comércio local. O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar os impactos econômicos e sociais que o projeto gerou na vida dos agricultores familiares e elucidar a relevância do cooperativismo para a promoção da diversificação produtiva, bem como evidenciar os desprendimentos e entraves que existiram durante a execução do projeto. Utilizou-se como fonte de dados primários o questionário autoaplicável, considerando um universo de 13 agricultores familiares. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de instrumentos de cunho qualitativo e quantitativo e foram tabulados por meio do programa Microsoft Excel, para análise estatística descritiva dos resultados utilizou-se uma análise de cluster com o método hierárquico pelo modelo Ward. Conclui-se com essa pesquisa, que o projeto intitulado Frango Caipirão CAPUL causou impactos na vida dos agricultores familiares e que a cooperativa por meio das suas ações de ATER exerceu influências no modo de reprodução social e econômica dos participantes do referido estudo, contribuindo para o fortalecimento da agricultura familiar. Implica-se, portanto, que outras ações do mesmo segmento podem utilizar este artigo como eixo norteador.

O objetivo da pesquisa é identificar a presença/ ausência e a natureza do papel do publicitário em dez das “perspectivas brasileiras contemporâneas sobre o fenômeno publicitário”. A metodologia é qualitativa e os procedimentos são orientados pela pesquisa bibliográfica. Os resultados apontam que a presença do publicitário é sutil nas abordagens brasileiras recentes sobre o fenômeno publicitário, dado que em poucas delas o profissional da produção é mencionado como um protagonista do processo, enquanto na maioria das perspectivas o publicitário é visto como um coprodutor junto do consumidor, no contexto de comunicação e cibercultura.

[Introducción]: Los humedales altoandinos con clave en el mantenimiento del servicio ecosistémico de regulación hídrica, esencial en la dinámica fluvial de cuencas. [Objetivo]: Evaluar la influencia de la variabilidad climática en los pantanos altoandinos de la microcuenca Miguaguó en Venezuela. [Metodología]: Para ello se definió una serie de tiempo de 46 años, la cual fue climatológicamente tipificada a partir del índice del Niño oceánico (ONI). Se seleccionaron 15 años muestrales climatológicamente distintos con disponibilidad de imágenes LANDSAT, para evaluar el comportamiento espectral de la vegetación de los pantanos a través del índice de estrés hídrico (MSI). Los valores de MSI fueron estadísticamente comparados con el ONI y con indicadores climáticos locales, y se estimaron las desviaciones porcentuales de las anomalías respecto a un año patrón. [Resultados]: Los resultados evidenciaron que la dinámica hidrológica de los humedales está influenciada por la combinación de anomalías ENOS (El Niño/La Niña) y años neutrales, aunque la afectación es diferencial, dependiendo de la localización de los pantanos en el paisaje, de las condiciones biofísicas del entorno, y de la precesión secuencial e intensidad de las anomalías. Por su parte, la tendencia dominante de desviación fue la de recuperación hídrica ocurrida durante eventos Niña y en años neutrales, donde los humedales son más sensibles a las anomalías de la fase fría de ENOS y con una alta resiliencia hidrológica. [Conclusiones]: Si bien los resultados fueron claros y contundentes, tienen un alcance espacial y temporal limitado, y los procesos estudiados son extremadamente complejos, por lo que se requieren investigaciones adicionales que complementen la comprensión objetiva de las relaciones climáticas y atmosféricas en los procesos hídricos de la alta montaña tropical.

Considering the valuable environmental and cultural heritage existing in the world in the context of agribusiness, it is possible to highlight the role of ethno-zootechnics as an important new tool for understanding these values, the rescue and generational transmission of livestock knowledge are relevant. Given this, the objective was to understand the perception of milk producers from the Ethno-zootechnical perspective. Through a semi-structured script, questionnaires were carried out with 41 interviewees and representatives of dairy farms to register the relevance of basic cultural knowledge associating them with social, economic and social environmental development. Cluster analysis was carried out using the hierarchical method. It was concluded that part of the dairy farmers located in the Northwest region of Minas Gerais state, the man/animal relationship is important, with traits of affection and utility. The transmission of traditional knowledge of the dairy activity is important, and that they believe that scientific and traditional knowledge can be beneficial in rural activity.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened biomes in the world. Despite that, this biome still includes many areas that are poorly known floristically, including several protected areas, such as the "Floresta Nacional do Rio Preto" ("Flona do Rio Preto"), located in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo. This study used a published vascular plant species list for this protected area from the "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil" as the basis to synthesise the species richness, endemism, conservation and new species occurrences found in the "Flona do Rio Preto".The published list of vascular plants was based on field expeditions conducted between 2018 and 2020 and data obtained from herbarium collections available in online databases. Overall, 722 species were documented for the "Flona do Rio Preto", 711 of which are native to Brazil and 349 are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. In addition, 60 species are geographically disjunct between the Atlantic and the Amazon Forests. Most of the documented species are woody and more than 50% of these are trees. Twenty-three species are threatened (CR, EN and VU), while five are Data Deficient (DD). Thirty-two species are new records for the State of Espírito Santo. Our results expand the knowledge of the flora of the Atlantic Forest and provide support for the development of new conservation policies for this protected area.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the knowledge about scoliosis in teachers of municipal public schools. Methods: In total, 126 professionals were interviewed using a standard questionnaire containing issues related to scoliosis. Results: 31% of interviewees did not know what scoliosis is. Of those who knew 89.65% were partially correct about the definition. Of those who claimed to know how the scoliosis diagnosis is made, only 25.58% were completely correct. When questioned about the Adams test, 84.9% did not know it. Among the interviewees, 57.9% answered that it is impossible to identify scoliosis by a simple examination of their students and, off these, 86.3% stated the lack of knowledge about the subject; and 92.1% considered that training for the diagnosis and early identification of scoliosis in students. Conclusion: This study holds social impact since the interviewed teachers were not knowledgeable about the subject and had difficulty in providing a definition of the condition and in how to proceed with the investigation. Continuous education activities and the inclusion of this subject on the curricula of teacher education programs would improve the early diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis, with high success rates. Among the various types of pain, such as nociceptive and nociplastic, the neuropathic pain is classified as a condition associated with damage to the somatosensory system, and is responsible for chronic painful experiences in affected patients. About 7–10% of the general population suffers from neuropathic pain, a condition that significantly reduces quality of life. There are various forms of intervention, being pharmacological approach a option that involves the use of antidepressants and anticonvulsivants. On the other hand, the use of neuroestimulation, a kind of surgical intervention also can be considered as an alternative. The use of medullary stimulation with electrodes has been applied to conditions refractory to medication, based on the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological principles of pain conduction in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. This article aims to detail the mechanisms of pain generation and transmission, the participation of the endogenous descending pathway and, the functioning and application of the medullary electrode in chronic pain conditions.

The Federal Institutes (FI) are specialized in technical and technological vocational education at different levels and modalities. The instrument for planning and evaluation in higher education institutions in Brazil is the Institutional Development Plan (IDP) and the objective of this paper is to evaluate the limitations of the IDP for FI. To do so, the application of a questionnaire to the managers of the FI was carried out and information that addressed the limitations of the IDP was obtained. The main limitations were related to the political and institutional aspects of the FI, demonstrated by the concern of their managers with the lack of knowledge of the community about the institution itself.

ABSTRACT Although extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are reported as extremely important to understand ecological interactions, the diversity of EFN-bearing plants remains underappreciated. In Brazil, studies are concentrated in Cerrado and extremely poorly known in other phytogeographic domains, such as Atlantic forest. Thus, this study provides one of the first checklists of angiosperms with EFNs in a protected area of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, bringing information about the richness, location of EFNs on the plant’s organs, as well as plant’s habit and conservation status. A total of 93 EFN-bearing species belonging to 61 genera and 29 families is reported, which corresponds to 16.5 % of the local flora. The vast majority has not been evaluated for their conservation status, and twenty species are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest. Vines and trees are the predominant plant habits and EFNs are mostly found on leaves. More than half of the species (53.7 %) comprises new additions to the world list of EFN-bearing plants, including the first record in Dilleniaceae. Our findings show a large number of EFN-bearing plant species from a single and small protected area in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. It reinforces the lack of studies of this nature, where further investigations are strongly recommended.

The alkaloids isolated from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium have demonstrated great pharmacological potential; however, the toxic profiles of these extracts and fractions are still not well elucidated. This study evaluated the toxicity of the ethanol extract (EEZR) and neutral (FNZR) and alkaloid (FAZR) fractions. Chemical characterization was performed by chromatographic methods: thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection (HPLC–DAD). The cytotoxicity of the samples was evaluated in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells using the cell viability method (MTT) and mutagenicity by the Allium cepa assay (ACA). Alkaloids isolated from the species were selected for toxicity prediction using preADMET and PROTOX. The molecular docking of the topoisomerase II protein (TOPOII) was used to investigate the mechanism of cell damage. In the EEZR, FNZR, and FAZR, the presence of alkaloids was detected in TCL and HPLC–DAD analyses. These samples showed a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) greater than 400 μg/mL in HepG2 cells. In ACA, time- and concentration-dependent changes were observed, with a significant reduction in the mitotic index and an increase in chromosomal aberrations for all samples. Nuclear sprouts and a micronucleus of the positive control (PC) were observed at 10 µg/mL and in the FAZR at 30 µg/mL; a chromosomal bridge in FNZR was observed at 105 µg/mL, CP at a concentration of 40 µg/mL, and nuclear bud and mitotic abnormalities in the EEZR were observed at 170 µg/mL. The alkaloids with a benzophenanthridine were selected for the in silico study, as structural alterations demonstrated certain toxic effects. Molecular docking with topo II demonstrated that all alkaloids bind to the protein. In summary, the fractionation of Z. rhoifolium did not interfere with toxicity; it seems that alkaloids with a benzophenanthridine nucleus may be involved in this toxicity.

Relações inadequadas entre homens e animais influenciam negativamente no bem-estar dos animais, na produtividade e na qualidade dos alimentos. Desta forma esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar, de uma maneira geral, o entendimento de bem-estar animal segundo a percepção de agricultores familiares imersos na cadeia produtiva do leite no município de Unaí, MG. Para isso foram realizadas 50 entrevistas por meio de um formulário estruturado e posteriormente os dados obtidos foram organizados em uma planilha utilizando o programa Microsoft Excel, para análise estatística descritiva dos resultados. Foi realizado uma análise de cluster utilizando o método hierárquico, pelo modelo Ward. Com base nos resultados analisados nesta pesquisa, pode-se afirmar, de uma maneira geral, que os pecuaristas familiares produtores de leite da região de Unaí possuem, em sua maioria, noções básicas a respeito do bem-estar animal e os benefícios que proporciona na cadeia produtiva do leite. Todavia, ainda não é perceptível para a maioria, uma vez que existem relatos contraditórios e compreensão distintas entre os pesquisados. Desta forma é importante que estes produtores tenham acesso a assistência técnica sobre o bem-estar animal, o que proporciona uma melhora significativa na produção de leite da região.

This paper presents a new hybrid switched-capacitor (HSC) isolated DC-DC converter topology generated from the integration of the ladder switching cell with the full-bridge ZVS-PWM converter. This new topology reduces the voltage stress on the switches and other components on the primary side of the transformer to half of the bus voltage, spontaneously equalizes the voltage in the divider capacitors and presents zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) in all switches for a wide load range. The principle of operation, static gain, current stress in the power semiconductors, and commutation analysis are presented in this paper. A theoretical and experimental comparative analysis of the new topology with the TL-NPC converter is also performed. Experimental results with a laboratory prototype with 2 kW rated power, 800 V input voltage, 60 V output voltage and 100 kHz switching frequency show a maximum efficiency of 97.12% for the HSC converter against 96.49% for the TL-NPC converter.

Road accidents are a worldwide problem, affecting millions of people annually. One way to reduce such accidents is to predict risk areas and alert drivers. Advanced research has been carried out on identifying accident-influencing factors and potential highway risk areas to mitigate the number of road accidents. Machine learning techniques have been used to build prediction models using a supervised classification based on a labeled dataset. In this work, we experimented with many machine learning algorithms to discover the best classifier for the Brazilian federal road hotspots associated with severe or nonsevere accident risk using several features. We tested with SVM, random forest, and a multi-layer perceptron neural network. The dataset contains a ten-year road accident report by the Brazilian Federal Highway Police. The feature set includes spatial footprint, weekday and time when the accident happened, road type, route, orientation, weather conditions, and accident type. The results were promising, and the neural network model provided the best results, achieving an accuracy of 83%, a precision of 84%, a recall of 83%, and an F1-score of 82%.

Sapotaceae is historically known as having a tricky and challenging taxonomy due to tangled morphologic heterogeneity. Consequently, this resulted in a large number of described genera and binomials. After Pennington’s Flora Neotropica work, several of those nomenclature issues were resolved. Nevertheless, many binomials remain unsolved and up for typification. Thus, following the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants, we propose 74 new lectotype designations, four of these are second-step typifications.

Brazilian protected areas are essential for the conservation of plants of the Atlantic Forest domain, one of 36 global biodiversity hotspots. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the richness of plants protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of “Parque Nacional do Caparaó” (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil." Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism, and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the list. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN, or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD), and five as priorities for conservation."Parque Nacional do Caparaó" houses 8% of the land plant species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, including 6% of its angiosperms, 31% of its lycophytes and ferns, and 14% of its avascular plants. Twelve percent of the threatened species listed for the state of Espírito Santo and 7% listed for the state of Minas Gerais are also protected by PNC. Surprisingly, 79% of the collections analyzed here were carried out in Minas Gerais, which represents just 21% of the total extension of the park. The compiled data uncover a huge botanical collection gap in this federally protected area.

Este artigo tensiona a busca sobre a modernidade em Alagoas de 1928. Envereda-se sobre a Festa da Arte Nova, realizada naquele ano, que parecia ser o retrato de um estado que evoluía, mesmo tardiamente, para o futuro. A narrativa é construída a partir de três perspectivas: o ideal moderno em construção, os temas abordados pelos artistas e a população negra que se avultava na cidade de Maceió.

O estudo dedica-se à análise da contribuição de diferentes parcelas do rendimento domiciliar para a redução da desigualdade, entre 2004 e 2015. O objetivo é diagnosticar aqueles componentes que mais contribuíram para reduzir as distorções sociais. Para isso, utilizam-se dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD). A variação da concentração é decomposta nas seis parcelas, a seguir: rendimento do trabalho; aposentadoria e pensões públicas; aposentadorias e pensões privadas; aluguéis; abono e doações e outros rendimentos. Essa última fonte inclui rendas obtidas através dos programas assistenciais e desempenha interesse especial na pesquisa. Constata-se, no estudo, que a desigualdade de renda, que em 2004 era de 0,566, declina, em 2015, para 0.512. Adicionalmente, as fontes de renda que mais contribuíram para a redução da desigualdade foram: as rendas oriundas do trabalho e das aposentadorias e pensões públicas, além da parcela de outros rendimentos, com uma contribuição importante de 18%, o que reforça a notoriedade dos programas sociais para a redução da desigualdade.

Abstract Salicaceae (Malpighiales) has a pantropical distribution, with 58 genera and ca. 1,200 species, and the Neotropical region is its center of diversity. In Brazil, 20 genera and 104 species can be found, of which 35 species are endemic. Holding almost half of Salicaceae diversity of the Atlantic Forest domain, Espírito Santo state has registered 23 species and four genera. Facing a large number of unidentified vouchers from the north of the state and challenging diagnostic characters for specific delimitation, this work aims to provide a taxonomic survey of Salicaceae of the Rio Preto National Forest. To do so, monthly field expeditions were carried out from January/2018 to March/2020. Salicaceae of Rio Preto National Forest is represented by four genera and nine species, where the genus Xylosma (X. glaberrima) and the species Banara serrata are new records to Espírito Santo state. Casearia is the richest genus with six species. Characters such as thorns, stipules, leaf punctations, type of venation and leaf margin, position and morphology of the leaf glands, position and morphology (sessile or pedunculate) of the inflorescences, number of floral whorls and position of the disc lobes are the most important characters for specific recognition.

Abstract The present work, which is part of a series of taxonomic monographs, aims to provide useful taxonomic features for distinguishing species of Cactaceae from Itaúnas State Park-Brazil. After performing field expeditions and observations, and analysis of herbaria vouchers, a total of five species of Cactaceae is herein recorded: Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis (Least Concern), Cereus fernambucensis subsp. fernambucensis (Least Concern), Melocactus violaceus subsp. violaceus (Vulnerable), Pereskia aculeata (Least Concern), and Pilosocereus arrabidae (Near Threatened). Leaf (when present) and cladodes morphology, and presence or absence of cephalium are the most useful characters to specific delimitation. Key identification, descriptions, photographs, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution and habitat data are herein provided.

Abstract The Lecythidaceae clade has a pantropical distribution and comprises 24 genera and 355 species. Ten genera and 121 species occur in Brazil, where species richness is highest in Amazonia. Four genera and 14 species were recorded in Espírito Santo, as well as two cultivated species. Important characters used to identify the species are the morphology of the bark, shape and size of the leaves, presence and shape of trichomes on the leaves and inflorescences, inflorescence type, morphology and color of the perianth (especially the petals), morphology of the androecium, shape and dimension of the fruits and seeds, and morphology of the arils. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, and comments for the taxa are provided.

Abstract Chloranthaceae comprises four genera and about 70 species. In Brazil, the family is represented by Hedyosmum, with three species, occurring in the Amazon, Cerrado, and Atlantic forest. In the state of Espírito Santo, the family is represented by Hedyosmum brasiliense. In this study we provide a morphological description, geographic distribution, photographs, and comments on this species.

Abstract This work is a part of the Flora do Espírito Santo project. The aim was to morphologically characterize the species of Commelinaceae occurring in the state of Espírito Santo and provide data on their geographical distribution, phenology, and comments. Fieldwork and herbarium studies were carried out. A total of 38 species, arranged in 10 genera, were recorded. Dichorisandra is the richest genus (17 species), followed by Commelina (seven spp.), Tradescantia (four spp.), Siderasis (three spp.), Tripogandra (two spp.), and Aneilema, Callisia, Floscopa, Gibasis and Tinantia (one species each). Two species are herein described as new to science, and the synonymization of D. albomarginata is proposed under the older D. procera. Inflorescence (type and position), stamens (number, color, and anther dehiscence), fruit (shape and ornamentation), and seeds (ornamentation, the position of the embryotega, and hilum shape) are the key diagnostic morphological characters for genus and species delimitation. Most of the species richness and abundance are concentrated in the mountain region of Espírito Santo, one of the largest forest areas in the state, showing the importance of conserving the remaining Atlantic Forest’s fragments.

Abstract Belonging to Malpighiales, Humiriaceae has about 65 species in eight genera, distributed almost exclusively in the Neotropics, occurring from southern Brazil to Central America. In Brazil, 35 species have been recorded (ca. 54% of the family’s diversity), wherein the greatest diversity is found in the Amazon (27 spp.), Atlantic Forest (9 spp.) and Cerrado (6 spp.) domains. This work is part of the “Flora do Espírito Santo” project, which aims to contribute to the knowledge of the state’s floristic diversity. Field expeditions were carried out from January/2019 to March/2020. Humiriaceae, in the state of Espírito Santo, is represented by six species distributed in four genera: Humiria, Humiriastrum, Sacoglottis and Vantanea. Among the registered genera, Vantanea is the most diversified, with three species. In the dense rain forest, all Humiriaceae species recorded here were found, followed by pioneer formations of restingas, with four species and seasonal semideciduous forest, with one species. The main morphological characters that assist in the delimitation of Humiriaceae species in Espírito Santo, are androecium characteristics, such as length (homodynamous or heterodynamous), number of stamens and the number of their series, as well as anther morphology.

Abstract This paper is a taxonomic treatment of the species of Mimosa (Leguminosae) in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The analyses were from herbarium specimens and field expeditions between April 2014 and July 2015. The genus is represented by 22 species, including seven new species records for the Flora of Espírito Santo list. We provide an identification key, morphological descriptions, distribution maps, illustrations and comments on the taxonomy and geographic distribution.
