Abstract

Streptococcus sanguinisis a leading cause of infective endocarditis, a life-threatening infection of the cardiovascular system. An important interaction in the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis is attachment of the organisms to host platelets.S. sanguinisexpresses a serine-rich repeat adhesin, SrpA, similar in sequence to platelet-binding adhesins associated with increased virulence in this disease. In this study, we determined the first crystal structure of the putative binding region of SrpA (SrpABR) both unliganded and in complex with a synthetic disaccharide ligand at 1.8 and 2.0 Å resolution, respectively. We identified a conserved Thr-Arg motif that orients the sialic acid moiety and is required for binding to platelet monolayers. Furthermore, we propose that sequence insertions in closely related family members contribute to the modulation of structural and functional properties, including the quaternary structure, the tertiary structure, and the ligand-binding site.

10. Overcoming Adult Illiteracy Utilizing the Community College System.

Abstract

This study identifies the population in need of adult education, how to attract learners, the need to promote English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) instruction, how to target the state's responsibilities, and the overall U.S. economic need to eliminate adult illiteracy. Research indicates that between 20 and 30 million American adults are seriously handicapped in their work and everyday lives by not having basic literacy skills. Furthermore: (1) 99% of all workers need to read in order to accomplish their job tasks; (2) one out of three mothers on welfare is unable to read; (3) people with fewer than six years of schooling are four times more likely to end up on welfare than those with at least nine years of schooling; and (4) 60 million American adults do not have high school diplomas. Federal- and state-funded programs in adult literacy attract only 8% of the illiterate population, and 20% of those do not attend classes. This paper concludes that the more than 1,700 community colleges in the U.S. are excellent venues to promote literacy education. State and federal agencies must cooperate with community colleges to develop the financial structure required to educate the illiterate population. (KP)

11. Emerging Issues and Critical Trends Affecting Fund Raising by Community Colleges.

Abstract

This paper discusses fund raising in America's community colleges. During 1997, approximately 1,755 two-year colleges in the United States enrolled more than 5.4 million first-time college freshmen, or 46% of the total students in higher education. However, these colleges received only five percent of the private financial support given to American higher education during the 1999-2000 school year. This paper purports the conclusion that community colleges fall behind in their fund-raising efforts because of: (1) image and identity problems; (2) lack of constituencies and connections; and (3) unsophisticated fund-raising programs. However, many successful fund-raising strategies can be employed by these two-year institutions, two of which include: (1) creating a foundation that is approved under Section 501 (a) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, as a recipient of tax-deductible contributions; and (2) developing corporate partnerships and providing jobs skills training to personnel. In addition, this paper presents more general recommendations: (1) community colleges must overcome the misconception that they are adequately funded by state and county governments; (2) foundations should initiate planned giving programs to attract private donations from the wealthy elderly--bequests in wills and life estates should be pursued; and (3) colleges should solicit alumni with new and creative approaches. The article discusses the management of a rare congenital umbilical arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a neonate presenting with high-output cardiac failure. It authors describe a combined approach involving percutaneous embolization and laparoscopic ligation, which allowed for safe access into the complex vascular mass and eradication of the AVM nidus without the risk of life-threatening hemorrhage.

48. Successful Community College Fund-Raising Programs

Abstract

This article describes a study whose primary purposes were to determine the characteristics of an effective fund-raising program, the marketing practices that contribute to the success of a fund-raising program, and factors of the development system's influence on a fund-raising program. This study utilized a Delphi research instrument. Initially, 74 invitations were sent to potential panel members at colleges with 10,000 or more students. Forty-two colleges agreed to participate in the study. Opinions were solicited by mail in a sequence of three separate rounds and participants were asked to respond to three open-ended questions. The composite list of statements and a zero-to-four rating, Likert-style, was included with each statement. After three rounds, the medians of the final responses were taken as representing a group consensus. This study identified specific factors that contribute to effective programs designed to "raise the bar" for successful fund raising at community colleges. These conclusions provide insights targeted for use by community college development foundation officers to create and implement effective fund-raising strategies. The findings of this study served as a basis for the conclusions in three major categories: (1) characteristics; (2) marketing practices; and (3) influence factors.

Abstract

Estimating heritability (h²) is required to predict the response to selection and is useful in species that are managed or farmed using trait information. Estimating h² in free-ranging populations is challenging due to the need for pedigrees; genomic-relatedness matrices (GRMs) circumvent this need and can be implemented in nearly any system where phenotypic and genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data are available. We estimated the heritability of 5 body and 3 antler traits in a free-ranging population of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Anticosti Island, Quebec, Canada. We generated classic and robust GRMs from >10,000 SNPs: hind foot length, dressed body mass, and peroneus muscle mass had high h² values of 0.62, 0.44, and 0.55, respectively. Heritability in male-only antler features ranged from 0.07 to 0.33. We explored the influence of filtering by minor allele frequency and data completion on h²: GRMs derived from fewer SNPs had reduced h² estimates and the relatedness coefficients significantly deviated from those generated with more SNPs. As a corollary, we discussed limitations to the application of GRMs in the wild, notably how skewed GRMs, specifically many unrelated individuals, can increase variance around h² estimates. This is the first study to estimate h² on a free-ranging population of white-tailed deer and should be informative for breeding designs and management as these traits could respond to selection.
