In this paper, we assess the scientific promise and technology feasibility of distributed instruments for planetary science. A distributed instrument is an instrument designed to collect spatially and temporally correlated data from multiple networked, geographically distributed point sensors. Distributed instruments are ubiquitous in Earth science, where they are routinely employed for weather and climate science, seismic studies and resource prospecting, and detection of industrial emissions. However, to date, their adoption in planetary surface science has been minimal. It is natural to ask whether this lack of adoption is driven by low potential to address high-priority questions in planetary science; immature technology; or both. To address this question, we survey high-priority planetary science questions that are uniquely well-suited to distributed instruments. We identify four areas of research where distributed instruments hold promise to unlock answers that are largely inaccessible to monolithic sensors, namely, weather and climate studies of Mars; localization of seismic events on rocky and icy bodies; localization of trace gas emissions, primarily on Mars; and magnetometry studies of internal composition. Next, we survey enabling technologies for distributed sensors and assess their maturity. We identify sensor placement (including descent and landing on planetary surfaces), power, and instrument autonomy as three key areas requiring further investment to enable future distributed instruments. Overall, this work shows that distributed instruments hold great promise for planetary science, and paves the way for follow-on studies of future distributed instruments for Solar System in-situ science.

This paper continues a parametric study in which we consider the effect of air swirler configuration on the flame structure and combustor performance using a circular 7-point Lean Direct Injector Array for gas turbine applications. The injector array consists of a center swirler element surrounded by six swirler elements. Parameters considered in this study include swirler angle (60° or 52°), handedness (co-swirling or counter-swirling) and center swirler offset. The primary focus considers flame stability, comparing four key air swirler configurations: for 1) fuel-lean flames; 2) high cold flow air reference velocity flames. We determined that the baseline swirler configuration had the best lean stability and could sustain the highest reference velocity. For this baseline configuration, we also compare the lean-blowout limits of four aircraft gas turbine reference fuels. With regard to lean blow-out, we determined that C4 could sustain the leanest flame, followed closely by A2. A1 was a poor performer.

Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), particle image velocimetry (PIV) and phase Doppler interferometry (PDI) were used to investigate spray patterns and velocity. The 2D PIV provides slices in the flow of axial-vertical or axial horizontal velocity components. With 3D PDI, we obtained 3 components of velocity, and fuel drop sizes. Chemiluminescence imaging and spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) were used to investigate flame structure, species location and relative species concentration. Phase Doppler and PIV data were acquired using scatter from fuel droplets; therefore, those data were obtained only at the pilot-only test points. Raman measurements were acquired only at 10/90 split points to avoid droplets.

Lean direct injection (LDI) is a combustion concept to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) for next generation aircraft gas turbine engines. These newer engines have cycles that increase fuel efficiency through increased operating pressures, which increase combustor inlet temperatures. NOx formation rates increase with higher temperatures, and the LDI strategy is to avoid high temperature by staying fuel lean and away from stoichiometric burning. Thus, LDI relies on rapid and uniform fuel/air mixing. Additionally, in combustors for smaller core engines, the area and volume bring about mixing and time scale challenges not found in larger engines. As part of our parametric study in which we vary swirler angle and orientation and look at their effect on fluid mixing and combustion, we examine one configuration of a 7-point lean direct injector by looking at the non-combusting 2-D velocity field using PIV, and combusting system for chemical species using chemiluminescent imaging and flame spectroscopy. The circular 7-point array consists of axial swirlers, with the center 60° swirler surrounded by six 52° swirlers. The velocity results for this configuration show that the outer swirlers serve to isolate the center flow field near the injector exit. A recirculation zone forms downstream of the center swirler, but not behind the outer swirlers. The combusting results also show an isolated zone directly downstream of the center injector. The flame spectra show variation in speciation of combustion species such as OH*, C3*, CH*, and C2* as a function of position within the combustor.

Studies of various injector configurations in a 7-point Lean Direct Injector (LDI) array are reported for both non-reacting (cold) flow and for Jet-A/air reacting flows. For cold flow, central recirculation zone (CRZ) formation is investigated and for reacting flows, combustor operability and dynamics are of interest. 2D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are described for the cold flow experiments and flame chemiluminescence imaging and dynamic pressure results are discussed for the reacting flow cases. PIV results indicate that for this configuration the close spacing between swirler elements leads to strong interaction that affects whether a CRZ forms, and pilot recess and counter-swirl helps to isolate swirlers from one another. Dynamics results focus on features identified near 500-Hz.

This paper presents results from tests in a flame tube facility, where a bio-derived alternate fuel was compared with JP-8 for emissions and general combustion performance. A research version of General Electric Aviation (GE) TAPS injector was used for the tests. Results include combustion efficiency from gaseous emission measurements, 2D planar laser-based imaging as well as basic flow visualization of the flame. Four inlet test conditions were selected that simulate various engine power conditions relevant to NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Supersonics Project and Environmentally Responsible Aviation Program. One inlet condition was a pilot-only test point. The other three inlet conditions incorporated fuel staging via a split between the pilot and main circuits of either 10%/90% or 20%/80%. For each engine power condition, three fuel mixes were used: 100% JP-8; 100% alternative; and a blend of the two, containing 75% alternative. Results for the inlet cases that have fuel split between pilot and main, indicate that fuel from the pilot appears to be evaporated by the time it reaches the dome exit. Main circuit liquid evaporates within a downstream distance equal to annulus height, no matter the fuel. Some fuel fluorescence images for a 10%/90% fuel staging case show a distinct difference between JP-8 and bio-derived fuel. OH PLIF results indicate that OH forms in a region more centrally-located for the JP-8 case downstream of the pilot, in its central recirculation region (CRZ). For the bio-derived Hydrotreated Renewable Jet (HRJ) fuel, however, we do not see much OH in the CRZ. The OH image structure near the dome exit is similar for the two fuels, but farther downstream the OH in the CRZ is much more apparent for the JP-8 than for the alternate fuel. For all conditions, there was no discernable difference between fuel types in combustion efficiency or emissions.

This paper presents results obtained during testing in optically-accessible, JP8-fueled, flame tube combustors using swirl-venturi lean direct injection (LDI) research hardware. The baseline LDI geometry has 9 fuel/air mixers arranged in a 3 x 3 array within a square chamber. 2-D results from this 9-element array are compared to results obtained in a cylindrical combustor using a 7-element array and a single element. In each case, the baseline element size remains the same. The effect of air swirler angle, and element arrangement on the presence of a central recirculation zone are presented. Only the highest swirl number air swirler produced a central recirculation zone for the single element swirl-venturi LDI and the 9-element LDI, but that same swirler did not produce a central recirculation zone for the 7-element LDI, possibly because of strong interactions due to element spacing within the array.

Thus, LDI relies on rapid and uniform fuel/air mixing. To understand this mixing process, a series of fundamental experiments are underway in the Combustion and Dynamics Facility at NASA Glenn Research Center. This first set of experiments examines cold flow (non-combusting) mixing using air and water. Using laser diagnostics, the effects of air swirler angle and injector tip location on the spray distribution, recirculation zone, and droplet size distribution are examined. Of the three swirler angles examined, 60 degrees is determined to have the most even spray distribution. The injector tip location primarily shifts the flow without changing the structure, unless the flow includes a recirculation zone. When a recirculation zone is present, minimum axial velocity decreases as the injector tip moves downstream towards the venturi exit; also the droplets become more uniform in size and angular distribution.
