In a four-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter background, the spherically symmetric ($\ell=0$) contribution to the Hadamard two-point correlation function is computed for a massless minimally-coupled scalar field in the Unruh state. Consideration is given to spacetime points located exterior to the black hole horizon, but within the cosmological horizon. Previously it was found in two dimensions for spatially separated points that the Hadamard function exhibits unbounded linear growth at late times, with a rate of growth proportional to the sum of the black hole and cosmological surface gravities. Here it is shown numerically that this behavior persists in four dimensions, where scattering effects associated with the scalar field modes lead to a modification of the two-dimensional result. An analytic approximation is derived for the growth rate in four dimensions and, in the limit that the black hole vanishes, the leading order contribution is equivalent to the rate of growth for the Hadamard function found previously for de Sitter space in cosmological coordinates., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

The semiclassical backreaction equations are solved in closed Robertson-Walker spacetimes containing a positive cosmological constant and a conformally coupled massive scalar field. Renormalization of the stress-energy tensor results in higher derivative terms that can lead to solutions that vary on much shorter time scales than the solutions that would occur if the higher derivative terms were not present. These extra solutions can be eliminated through the use of order reduction. Four different methods of order reduction are investigated. These are first applied to the case when only conformally invariant fields, with and without classical radiation, are present. Then they are applied to the massive conformally coupled scalar field. The effects of different adiabatic vacuum states for the massive field are considered. It is found that if enough particles are produced, then the Universe collapses to a final singularity. Otherwise it undergoes a bounce, but at a smaller value of the scale factor (for the models considered) than occurs for the classical de Sitter solution. The stress-energy tensor incorporates both particle production and vacuum polarization effects. Detailed behaviors of the modes of quantized scalar fields in the Unruh state for various eternal black holes in two dimensions are investigated. It is shown that the late-time behaviors of some of the modes of the quantum fields and of the symmetric two-point function are determined by infrared effects. The nature of these effects depends upon whether there is an effective potential in the mode equation and what form this potential takes. Here, three cases are considered, one with no potential and two with potentials that are nonnegative everywhere and are zero on the event horizon of the black hole and zero at either infinity or the cosmological horizon. Specifically, the potentials are a delta function potential and the potential that occurs for a massive scalar field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. In both cases, scattering effects remove infrared divergences in the mode functions that would otherwise arise from the normalization process. When such infrared divergences are removed, it is found that the modes that are positive frequency with respect to the Kruskal time on the past black hole horizon approach zero in the limit that the radial coordinate is fixed and the time coordinate goes to infinity. In contrast, when there is no potential and thus infrared divergences occur, the same modes approach nonzero constant values in the late-time limit when the radial coordinate is held fixed. The behavior of the symmetric two-point function when the field is in the Unruh state is investigated for the case of a delta function potential in certain asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes in two dimensions. The symmetric two-point function for a massless, minimally coupled scalar field in the Unruh state is examined for Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime in two dimensions. This function grows linearly in terms of a time coordinate that is well-defined on the future black hole and cosmological horizons, when the points are split in the space direction. This type of behavior also occurs in two dimensions for other static black hole spacetimes when the field is in the Unruh state, and at late times it occurs in spacetimes where a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell. A method is presented which allows for the numerical computation of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field in the region outside the event horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell. This method involves taking the difference between the stress-energy tensor for the in state in the collapsing null shell spacetime and that for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime. The construction of the modes for the in vacuum state and the Unruh state is discussed. Applying the method, the renormalized stress-energy tensor in the 2D case has been computed numerically and shown to be in agreement with the known analytic solution. In 4D, the presence of an effective potential in the mode equation causes scattering effects that make the construction of the in modes more complicated. Two-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter is a convenient spacetime in which to study the effects of horizons on quantum fields since the spacetime contains two horizons, and the wave equation for a massless minimally coupled scalar field can be solved exactly. The two-point correlation function of a massless scalar is computed in the Unruh state. It is found that the field correlations grow linearly in terms of a particular time coordinate that is good in the future development of the past horizons, and that the rate of growth is equal to the sum of the black hole plus cosmological surface gravities. This time dependence results from additive contributions of each horizon component of the past Cauchy surface that is used to define the state. The state becomes the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the cosmological far field limit. Solutions to the backreaction equation in 1+1-dimensional semiclassical electrodynamics are obtained and analyzed when considering a time-varying homogeneous electric field initially generated by a classical electric current, coupled to either a quantized scalar field or a quantized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ field. Particle production by way of the Schwinger effect leads to backreaction effects that modulate the electric field strength. Details of the particle production process are investigated along with the transfer of energy between the electric field and the particles. The validity of the semiclassical approximation is also investigated using a criterion previously implemented for chaotic inflation and, in an earlier form, semiclassical gravity. The criterion states that the semiclassical approximation will break down if any linearized gauge-invariant quantity constructed from solutions to the linear response equation, with finite nonsingular data, grows rapidly for some period of time. Approximations to homogeneous solutions of the linear response equation are computed and it is found that the criterion is violated when the maximum value, $E_{\rm max}$, obtained by the electric field is of the order of the critical scale for the Schwinger effect, $E_{\rm max} \sim E_{\rm crit}\equiv m^2/q$, where $m$ is the mass of the quantized field and $q$ is its electric charge. A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Unruh state. The Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) analog black hole is a useful tool to investigate correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners. It can be expressed in terms of $\langle ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}\ ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} \rangle$, where $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}$ is the annihilation operator for the Hawking particle and $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} $ is the corresponding one for the partner. This basic quantity is calculated for three different models for the BEC flow. It is shown that in each model the inclusion of the effective potential in the mode equations makes a significant difference. Furthermore, particle production induced by this effective potential in the interior of the black hole is studied for each model and shown to be nonthermal. An investigation is undertaken into the properties and effects of a preinflationary era during at least part of which semiclassical gravity was valid. It is argued that if the Universe (or our part of it) was approximately homogeneous and isotropic during that era, then the Universe was likely to have been radiation dominated. A simple model in which the Universe contains classical radiation and a cosmological constant is used to investigate potential effects of such a preinflationary era on the cosmic microwave background. The power spectrum is computed using the mode functions of a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field. Various choices of state for this field are considered, including adiabatic vacuum states of various orders and the vacuum state that would naturally occur if the Universe made a sudden transition from being radiation dominated to de Sitter space. Phonon creation inside the horizons of acoustic black holes is investigated using two simple toy models. It is shown that, unlike what occurs in the exterior regions, the spectrum is not thermal. Black hole evaporation is studied using wave packets for the modes. These allow for approximate frequency and time resolution. The leading order late time behavior gives the well known Hawking radiation that is independent of how the black hole formed. The focus here is on the higher order terms and the rate at which they damp at late times. Some of these terms carry information about how the black hole formed. A general argument is given which shows that the damping is significantly slower (power law) than what might be naively expected from a stationary phase approximation (exponential). Zero temperature black hole solutions to the semiclassical backreaction equations are investigated. Evidence is provided that certain components of the stress-energy tensors for free quantum fields at the horizon only depend on the local geometry near the horizon. This allows the semiclassical backreaction equations to be solved near the horizon. Transverse excitations in analogue black holes induce a mass like term in the longitudinal mode equation. With a simple toy model we show that correlation functions display a rather rich structure characterized by groups of parallel peaks. The decay rate of the Bunch-Davies state of a massive scalar field in the expanding flat spatial sections of de Sitter space is determined by an analysis of the particle pair creation process in real time. The Feynman definition of particle and antiparticle Fourier mode solutions of the scalar wave equation, and their adiabatic phase analytically continued to the complexified time domain, show conclusively that the Bunch-Davies state is not the vacuum state at late times. The closely analogous creation of charged particle pairs in a uniform electric field is reviewed and Schwinger's result for the vacuum decay rate is recovered by the real time analysis. The vacuum decay rate in each case is also calculated by switching the background field on adiabatically, allowing it to act for a very long time, and then adiabatically switching it off again. In both the uniform electric field and de Sitter cases the particles created while the field is switched on are verified to be real, in the sense that they persist in the final asymptotic flat zero-field region. In the de Sitter case there is an interesting residual dependence of the rate on how the de Sitter phase is ended, indicating a greater sensitivity to spatial boundary conditions. The electric current of the created particles in the E-field case and their energy density and pressure in the de Sitter case are also computed, and the magnitude of their backreaction effects on the background field estimated. Possible consequences of the Hubble scale instability of the de Sitter vacuum for cosmology, vacuum dark energy, and the cosmological `constant' problem are discussed., Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures

The effects which quantum fields and an $\alpha_0 R^2$ term in the gravitational Lagrangian have on future singularities are investigated. While all values of $\alpha_0$ are considered, an emphasis is placed on those values which are compatible with the universe having undergone Starobinsky inflation in the past. These are also values which lead to stable solutions to the semiclassical backreaction equations in the present universe. The dark energy is modeled as a perfect fluid, and the focus is on type I-IV singularities and little rips which result when the classical Einstein equations are solved with various types of dark energy as a source. First, evidence is provided that the energy densities of massive conformally coupled scalar fields approach that of the conformally invariant scalar field as a type III singularity is approached. Then, solutions to the semiclassical backreaction equations are investigated when conformally invariant fields and the $ \alpha_0 R^2$ term in the gravitational Lagrangian are present. General proofs regarding the behaviors of the solutions are given. An exact correspondence between a black hole and an accelerating mirror is demonstrated. It is shown that for a massless minimally coupled scalar field the same Bogolubov coefficients connecting the "in" and "out" states occur for a (1+1)D flat spacetime with a particular perfectly reflecting accelerating boundary trajectory and a (1+1)D curved spacetime in which a null shell collapses to form a black hole. Generalization of the latter to the (3+1)D case is discussed. The spectral dynamics is computed in both (1+1)-dimensional spacetimes along with the energy flux in the spacetime with a mirror. An exact correspondence is shown between a new moving mirror trajectory in (1+1)D and a spacetime in (1+1)D in which a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell. There is an exact correspondence between the simplest solution to Einstein's equations describing the formation of a black hole and a particular moving mirror trajectory. Formal solutions to the mode equations for both spherically symmetric black holes and Bose-Einstein condensate acoustic black holes are obtained by writing the spatial part of the mode equation as a linear Volterra integral equation of the second kind. The solutions work for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in the s-wave or zero angular momentum sector for a spherically symmetric black hole and in the longitudinal sector of a 1D Bose-Einstein condensate acoustic black hole. These solutions are used to obtain in a rigorous way analytic expressions for the scattering coefficients and gray-body factors in the zero frequency limit. It is shown that the gray-body factor for a one-dimensional elongated Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) acoustic black hole with one horizon does not vanish in the low-frequency ($\omega\to 0$) limit. This implies that the analog Hawking radiation is dominated by the emission of an infinite number ($\frac{1}{\omega}$) of soft phonons in contrast with the case of a Schwarzschild black hole where the gray-body factor vanishes as $\omega\to 0$ and the spectrum is not dominated by low-energy particles. The Euclidean or Bunch-Davies O(4,1) invariant 'vacuum' state of quantum fields in global de Sitter space is shown to be unstable to small perturbations, even for a massive free field with no self-interactions. There are perturbations of this state with arbitrarily small energy density at early times that is exponentially blueshifted in the contracting phase of 'eternal' de Sitter space, and becomes large enough to disturb the classical geometry through the semiclassical Einstein eqs. at later times. In the closely analogous case of a constant, uniform electric field, a time symmetric state equivalent to the de Sitter invariant one is constructed, which is also not a stable vacuum state under perturbations. The role of a quantum anomaly in the growth of perturbations and symmetry breaking is emphasized in both cases. In de Sitter space, the same results are obtained either directly from the renormalized stress tensor of a massive scalar field, or for massless conformal fields of any spin, more directly from the effective action and stress tensor associated with the conformal trace anomaly. The anomaly stress tensor shows that states invariant under the O(4) subgroup of the de Sitter group are also unstable to perturbations of lower spatial symmetry, implying that both the O(4,1) isometry group and its O(4) subgroup are broken by quantum fluctuations. We show that global de Sitter space is unstable to particle creation, even for a massive free field theory with no self-interactions. The O(4,1) de Sitter invariant state is a definite phase coherent superposition of particle and anti-particle solutions in both the asymptotic past and future, and therefore is not a true vacuum state. In the closely related case of particle creation by a constant, uniform electric field, a time symmetric state analogous to the de Sitter invariant one is constructed, which is also not a stable vacuum state. We provide the general framework necessary to describe the particle creation process, the mean particle number, and dynamical quantities such as the energy-momentum tensor and current of the created particles in both the de Sitter and electric field backgrounds in real time, establishing the connection to kinetic theory. We compute the energy-momentum tensor for adiabatic vacuum states in de Sitter space initialized at early times in global S^3 sections, and show that particle creation in the contracting phase results in exponentially large energy densities at later times, necessitating an inclusion of their backreaction effects, and leading to large deviation of the spacetime from global de Sitter space before the expanding phase can begin., Comment: 60 pages, 15 figures

Particle production due to a quantized, massless, minimally coupled scalar field in two-dimensional flat spacetime with an accelerating mirror is investigated, with a focus on the time dependence of the process. We analyze first the classes of trajectories previously investigated by Carlitz and Willey and by Walker and Davies. We then analyze four new classes of trajectories, all of which can be expressed analytically and for which several ancillary properties can be derived analytically. The time dependence is investigated through the use of wave packets for the modes of the quantized field that are in the out vacuum state. We compute exact expressions of the noise kernel, defined as the expectation value of the symmetrized connected stress energy bitensor, for conformally-invariant scalar fields with respect to the conformal vacuum, valid for an arbitrary separation (timelike, spacelike and null) of points in a class of conformally-flat spacetimes. We derive explicit expressions for the noise kernel evaluated in the static de Sitter coordinates with respect to the Gibbons-Hawking vacuum and analyze the behavior of the noise kernel in the region near the cosmological horizon. We develop a quasi-local expansion near the cosmological horizon and compare it with the exact results. This gives insight into the likely range of validity of the quasi-local approximation expressions for the noise kernel for the conformally invariant scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime which are given in PHYSICAL REVIEW D{\bf 85}, 044037 (2012)., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

The density density correlation function is computed for the Bogoliubov pseudoparticles created in a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoing a black hole flow. The semiclassical approximation has frequently been used to describe the initial stage of particle production, often called preheating, which occurs after the inflationary epoch in chaotic models of inflation. During this phase backreaction effects from the produced particles on the inflaton field are significant, and one might be concerned about the validity of the semiclassical approximation, even though large backreaction effects are allowed if the inflaton field is coupled to a large number of quantum fields. A criterion is presented for the validity of the semiclassical approximation in this case and the question of whether this criterion is satisfied during preheating is addressed., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

A method is given to compute an approximation to the noise kernel, defined as the symmetrized connected 2-point function of the stress tensor, for the conformally invariant scalar field in any spacetime conformal to an ultra-static spacetime for the case in which the field is in a thermal state at an arbitrary temperature. The most useful applications of the method are flat space where the approximation is exact and Schwarzschild spacetime where the approximation is better than it is in most other spacetimes. The two points are assumed to be separated in a timelike or spacelike direction. The method involves the use of a Gaussian approximation which is of the same type as that used by Page to compute an approximate form of the stress tensor for this field in Schwarzschild spacetime. All components of the noise kernel have been computed exactly for hot flat space and one component is explicitly displayed. Semiclassical gravity is investigated in a large class of asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetimes including those containing static stars, black holes, and wormholes. Specifically the stress-energy tensors of massless free spin 0 and spin 1/2 fields are computed to leading order in the asymptotic regions of these spacetimes. This is done for spin 0 fields in Schwarzschild spacetime using a WKB approximation. It is done numerically for the spin 1/2 field in Schwarzschild, extreme Reissner-Nordstrom, and various wormhole spacetimes. And it is done by finding analytic solutions to the leading order mode equations in a large class of asymptotically flat static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Agreement is shown between these various computational methods. It is found that for all of the spacetimes considered, the energy density and pressure in the asymptotic region are proportional to 1/r^5 to leading order. Furthermore, for the spin 1/2 field and the conformally coupled scalar field, the stress-energy tensor depends only on the leading order geometry in the far field limit. Effects of quantized free scalar fields in cosmological spacetimes with Big Rip singularities are investigated. The energy densities for these fields are computed at late times when the expansion is very rapid. For the massless minimally coupled field it is shown that an attractor state exists in the sense that, for a large class of states, the energy density of the field asymptotically approaches the energy density it would have if it was in the attractor state. Results of numerical computations of the energy density for the massless minimally coupled field and for massive fields with minimal and conformal coupling to the scalar curvature are presented. For the massive fields the energy density is seen to always asymptotically approach that of the corresponding massless field. The question of whether the energy densities of quantized fields can be large enough for backreaction effects to remove the Big Rip singularity is addressed., Comment: PRD version. References added. Linearized fluctuations of quantized matter fields and the spacetime geometry around de Sitter space are considered in the case that the matter fields are conformally invariant. Taking the unperturbed state of the matter to be the de Sitter invariant Bunch-Davies state, the linear variation of the stress tensor about its self-consistent mean value serves as a source for fluctuations in the geometry through the semi-classical Einstein equations. This linear response framework is used to investigate both the importance of quantum backreaction and the validity of the semi-classical approximation in cosmology. The full variation of the stress tensor, delta T^a_b contains two kinds of terms: (1) those that depend explicitly upon the linearized metric variation delta g_{cd} through the [T^a_b, T^{cd}] causal response function; and (2) state dependent variations, independent of delta g_{cd}. For perturbations of the first kind, the criterion for the validity of the semi-classical approximation in de Sitter space is satisfied for fluctuations on all scales well below the Planck scale. The perturbations of the second kind contain additional massless scalar degrees of freedom associated with changes of state of the fields on the cosmological horizon scale. Particle production and its effects on the inflaton field are investigated during the preheating phase of chaotic inflation using a model consisting of a massive scalar inflaton field coupled to N massless quantum scalar fields. The effects of spacetime curvature and interactions between the quantum fields are ignored. A large N expansion is used to obtain a coupled set of equations including a backreaction equation for the classical inflaton field. Previous studies of preheating using these equations have been done. Here the first numerical solutions to the full set of equations are obtained for various values of the coupling constant and the initial amplitude of the inflaton field. States are chosen so that initially the backreaction effects on the inflaton field are small and the mode equations for the quantum fields take the form of Mathieu equations. Potential problems relating to the parametric amplification of certain modes of the quantum fields are identified and resolved. A detailed study of the damping of the inflaton field is undertaken. Analytic approximations for the stress-energy of quantized fields in the Hartle-Hawking state in static black hole spacetimes predict divergences on the event horizon of the black hole for a number of important cases. Such divergences, if real, could substantially alter the spacetime geometry near the event horizon, possibly preventing the black hole from existing. The results of three investigations of these types of effects are presented. The first involves a new analytic approximation for conformally invariant fields in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes which is finite on the horizon. The second focuses on the stress-energy of massless scalar fields in Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. The third focuses on the stress-energy of massless scalar fields in zero temperature black hole geometries that could be solutions to the semiclassical backreaction equations near the event horizon of the black hole., Comment: 5 pages. The effective action associated with the trace anomaly provides a general algorithm for approximating the expectation value of the stress tensor of conformal matter fields in arbitrary curved spacetimes. In static, spherically symmetric spacetimes, the algorithm involves solving a fourth order linear differential equation in the radial coordinate r for the two scalar auxiliary fields appearing in the anomaly action, and its corresponding stress tensor. By appropriate choice of the homogeneous solutions of the auxiliary field equations, we show that it is possible to obtain finite stress tensors on all Reissner-Nordstrom event horizons, including the extreme Q=M case. We compare these finite results to previous analytic approximation methods, which yield invariably an infinite stress-energy on charged black hole horizons, as well as with detailed numerical calculations that indicate the contrary. The approximation scheme based on the auxiliary field effective action reproduces all physically allowed behaviors of the quantum stress tensor, in a variety of quantum states, for fields of any spin, in the vicinity of the entire family (0 le Q le M) of RN horizons., Comment: 43 pages, 12 figures

The universality of semiclassical gravity is investigated by considering the behavior of the quantities < \phi^2 > and < {T^a}_b >, along with quantum corrections to the effective Newtonian potential in the far field limits of static spherically symmetric objects ranging from stars in the weak field Newtonian limit to black holes. For scalar fields it is shown that when differences occur they all result from the behavior of a single mode with zero frequency and angular momentum and are thus due to a combination of infrared and s-wave effects. We present an analytic method based on the Hadamard-WKB expansion to calculate the self-force for a particle with scalar charge that undergoes radial infall in a Schwarzschild spacetime after being held at rest until a time t = 0. Our result is valid in the case of short duration from the start. It is possible to use the Hadamard-WKB expansion in this case because the value of the integral of the retarded Green's function over the particle's entire past trajectory can be expressed in terms of two integrals over the time period that the particle has been falling. We present a consistent low energy effective field theory framework for parameterizing the effects of novel short distance physics in inflation, and their possible observational signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background. We consider the class of general homogeneous, isotropic initial states for quantum scalar fields in Robertson-Walker (RW) spacetimes, subject to the requirement that their ultraviolet behavior be consistent with renormalizability of the covariantly conserved stress tensor which couples to gravity. In the functional Schr\"odinger picture such states are coherent, squeezed, mixed states characterized by a Gaussian density matrix. This Gaussian has parameters which approach those of the adiabatic vacuum at large wave number, and evolve in time according to an effective classical Hamiltonian. The one complex parameter family of $\alpha$ squeezed states in de Sitter spacetime does not fall into this UV allowed class, except for the special value of the parameter corresponding to the Bunch-Davies state. We determine the finite contributions to the inflationary power spectrum and stress tensor expectation value of general UV allowed adiabatic states, and obtain quantitative limits on the observability and backreaction effects of some recently proposed models of short distance modifications of the initial state of inflation. For all UV allowed states, the second order adiabatic basis provides a good description of particles created in the expanding RW universe. Due to the absence of particle creation for the massless, minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space, there is no phase decoherence in the simplest free field inflationary models. We present significant evidence in favour of the holographic conjecture that ``4D black holes localized on the brane found by solving the classical bulk equations in $AdS_5$ are quantum corrected black holes and not classical ones''. The crucial test is the calculation of the quantum correction to the Newtonian potential based on a numerical computation of $$ in Schwarzschild spacetime for matter fields in the zero temperature Boulware vacuum state. For the case of the conformally invariant scalar field the leading order term is found to be $M/45\pi r^3$. This result is equivalent to the result which was previously obtained in the weak-field approximation using Feynman diagrams and which has been shown to be equivalent, via the AdS/CFT duality, to the analogous calculation in Randall-Sundrum braneworlds. This asymptotic behavior was not captured in the analytical approximations for $$ proposed in the literature. An analytic method is given for deriving the part of the retarded Green's function v(x,x') that contributes to the tail term in the radiation reaction force felt by a particle coupled to a massless minimally coupled scalar field. The method gives an expansion of v(x,x') for small separations of the points x, x' valid for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetime. It is obtained by using a WKB approximation for the Euclidean Green's function for the massless minimally coupled scalar field and is equivalent to the DeWitt-Schwinger expansion for v(x,x'). The stress-energy tensor for the massless spin 1/2 field is numerically computed outside and on the event horizons of both charged and uncharged static non-rotating black holes, corresponding to the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om solutions of Einstein's equations. The field is assumed to be in a thermal state at the black hole temperature. Comparison is made between the numerical results and previous analytic approximations for the stress-energy tensor in these spacetimes. For the Schwarzschild (charge zero) solution, it is shown that the stress-energy differs even in sign from the analytic approximation. A quantitative test for the validity of the semi-classical approximation in gravity is given. The criterion proposed is that solutions to the semi-classical Einstein equations should be stable to linearized perturbations, in the sense that no gauge invariant perturbation should become unbounded in time. A self-consistent linear response analysis of these perturbations, based upon an invariant effective action principle, necessarily involves metric fluctuations about the mean semi-classical geometry, and brings in the two-point correlation function of the quantum energy-momentum tensor in a natural way. This linear response equation contains no state dependent divergences and requires no new renormalization counterterms beyond those required in the leading order semi-classical approximation. The general linear response criterion is applied to the specific example of a scalar field with arbitrary mass and curvature coupling in the vacuum state of Minkowski spacetime. A method for computing the stress-energy tensor for the quantized, massless, spin 1/2 field in a general static spherically symmetric spacetime is presented. The field can be in a zero temperature state or a non-zero temperature thermal state. An expression for the full renormalized stress-energy tensor is derived. It consists of a sum of two tensors both of which are conserved. One tensor is written in terms of the modes of the quantized field and has zero trace. In most cases it must be computed numerically. The other tensor does not explicitly depend on the modes and has a trace equal to the trace anomaly. The semiclassical Einstein equations are solved to first order in $\epsilon = \hbar/M^2$ for the case of an extreme or nearly extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole perturbed by the vacuum stress-energy of quantized free fields. It is shown that, for realistic fields of spin 0, 1/2, or 1, any zero temperature black hole solution to the equations must have an event horizon at $r_h < |Q|$, with $Q$ the charge of the black hole. The renormalized expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field with any mass m and curvature coupling xi is studied for an arbitrary homogeneous and isotropic physical initial state in de Sitter spacetime. We prove quite generally that has a fixed point attractor behavior at late times, which depends only on m and xi, for any fourth order adiabatic state that is infrared finite. Specifically, when m^2 + xi R > 0, approaches the Bunch-Davies de Sitter invariant value at late times, independently of the initial state. When m = xi = 0, it approaches instead the de Sitter invariant Allen-Folacci value. When m = 0 and xi \ge 0 we show that this state independent asymptotic value of the energy-momentum tensor is proportional to the conserved geometrical tensor (3)H_{ab}, which is related to the behavior of the quantum effective action of the scalar field under global Weyl rescaling. This relationship serves to generalize the definition of the trace anomaly in the infrared for massless, non-conformal fields. In the case m^2 + xi R = 0, but m and xi separately different from zero, grows linearly with cosmic time at late times.
