This study examined whether domain-general cognitive weaknesses in processing speed (PS) or executive functioning (EF) moderate the relation between word reading scores and anxiety such that lower word reading scores in combination with lower cognitive scores are associated with higher anxiety symptoms. The sample consisted of 755 youth ages 8-16 who were recruited as part of the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center twins study. Lower scores on PS (R[superscript 2] = 0.007, p = 0.014), EF (R[superscript 2] = 0.009, p = 0.006), and word reading (R[superscript 2] = 0.006-0.008, p = 0.010-0.032) were associated with higher anxiety scores. In addition, the word reading × cognitive interactions were significant such that lower scores on PS (R[superscript 2] = 0.010, p = 0.005) or EF (R[superscript 2] = 0.013, p = 0.010) "combined" with lower word reading were associated with higher-than-expected anxiety symptoms. Results suggest that weaknesses in PS, EF, and word reading are modestly associated with higher anxiety symptoms, and these anxiety symptoms may be compounded in youth with both PS or EF weaknesses and word reading difficulties. These findings can guide assessment approaches for identifying youth with word reading challenges who may be at increased risk for anxiety.

This meta-analysis examined associations between the quantity and quality of parental linguistic input and children's language. Pooled effect size for quality (i.e., vocabulary diversity and syntactic complexity; k = 35; N = 1,958; r = .33) was more robust than for quantity (i.e., number of words/tokens/utterances; k = 33; N = 1,411; r = .20) of linguistic input. For quality and quantity of parental linguistic input, effect sizes were stronger when input was observed in naturalistic contexts compared to free play tasks. For quality of parental linguistic input, effect sizes also increased as child age and observation length increased. Effect sizes were not moderated by socioeconomic status or child gender. Findings highlight parental linguistic input as a key environmental factor in children's language skills.

Background: The mental health and well-being of individuals can be positively affected by improving facial appearance through orthodontic treatment. However, research is limited on the relationship between facial appearance and self-concept of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Materials and methods: This scoping review includes 19 articles and is aimed to examine the self-concept of individuals with intellectual disabilities and determine how the self-concept might be impacted by facial appearance. Furthermore, this review is exploratory in the way that an attempt was made to extract constructs that contribute to the self-concept of persons with intellectual disabilities. Results: Unfortunately, no articles were found on how individuals with intellectual disabilities think about their own facial appearance. However, the articles on self-concept in persons with intellectual disabilities do mention some interesting facts: social comparisons lead to social stigma that can contribute negatively to the self-concept of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Also, the ability to communicate and express oneself can contribute to one's self-esteem. Furthermore, parents/caregivers often influence the concept of oneself. Moreover, an individual's relationship with their social environment defines their self-concept. Conclusion: It is currently unknown how individuals with intellectual disabilities view their own facial appearance and whether their self-concept is influenced by their appearance. Questionnaires which address attitudes on facial appearance could provide a deeper understanding of the self-concept of individuals with intellectual disabilities and possibly make way for orthodontic treatment. However, caution is needed concerning changing the physical appearance of persons with intellectual disabilities. One should also battle stigma by encouraging the social inclusion of persons with intellectual disability.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the team-based learning environment facilitated the competency of third year dental students in caries detection and activity assessment. Corresponding data were achieved using digital radiographs to determine the carious lesions in three clinical cases. The distribution of the caries evaluations for each of the 36 students and the 12 teams were tabulated for each mesial and distal surface of each tooth for the three patients. In the first stage of the evaluation, students worked individually for caries assessment. In the second stage, twelve teams of three students each performed the assessment. The teams had a significantly larger percentage of accurate anterior caries evaluations (54%) than the individual students (33%) (X[superscript 2] = 5.50; p = 0.019), but also saw significantly more carious lesions when there was no lesion (126%) compared to the students working singly (85%) (X[superscript 2] = 7.55; p = 0.006). The individual students, however, were significantly more likely to incorrectly call incipient caries active (81%) than the teams (14%).

Wettability is recognized as an important property of implant surfaces for ensuring improved biological responses. However, limited information exists on how bone grafting procedures including materials influence the hydrophilic behavior of implant surfaces. This in vitro study aimed to investigate the influence of two bovine grafting materials after hydration on the wettability of four different disk surfaces: commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), titanium–zirconium dioxide (TiZrO2-Cerid®), zirconia (SDS®), and niobium. Wettability tests were performed on each of the four implant surfaces with a solution of 0.9% sodium chloride after mixture with W-boneTM (Group A) or Bio-Oss® (Group B) or 0.9% sodium chloride alone (Group C). In total, 360 contact angle measurements were completed with n = 30 per group. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way analysis with variance (ANOVA) test with a significant mean difference at the 0.05 level. For pure titanium, Group A demonstrated increased hydrophilicity compared to Group B. Both TiZrO2 and zirconia showed significant differences for Groups A, B and C, exhibiting a decrease in hydrophilicity after the use of bovine grafting materials compared to titanium surfaces. Niobium remained consistently hydrophobic. In summary, this study revealed that bovine grafting materials may diminish the hydrophilicity of zirconia surfaces and exert varied effects on titanium and niobium. These findings contribute to the understanding of implant surface interactions with grafting materials, offering insights for optimizing biological responses in implantology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the effect of different dental lab materials on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) metal artifact at different resolutions. A total of seven common dental lab materials were molded to a dental sextant of four extracted, restored teeth. In addition to base alone (control), each material was scanned using the Carestream 9600 CBCT unit at three resolutions – 0.3 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.075 mm – at manufacturer established exposure parameters. A single, representative axial view of each trial was evaluated for metal artifact both quantitatively by histogram analysis and qualitatively by profile plot analysis in ImageJ. No statistically significant differences between the control and the dental materials were found; however, post-hoc tests showed significance between Blu-mousse® and polyvinyl siloxane with dental materials and control, predominantly in lower resolutions. The current study provides initial evidence on the influence of dental materials have on CBCT metal artifact as described by beam hardening, photon starvation, scatter, and noise, especially at lower resolutions. Blu-Mousse® and polyvinyl siloxane reduced the perceived beam hardening and photon starvation artifact the greatest, relative to other materials, at all three resolutions and lower resolutions, respectively.
