Abstract

Interferometry has underpinned a century of discoveries, ranging from the disproval of the ether theory to the detection of gravitational waves, offering insights into wave dynamics with unrivalled precision through the measurement of phase relationships. In electronics, phase-sensitive measurements can probe the nature of transmissive topological and quantum states, but are only possible using complex device structures in magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate electronic interferometry in a single-molecule device through the study of non-equilibrium Fano resonances. We show the phase difference between an electronic orbital and a coupled Fabry-Perot resonance are tuneable through electric fields, and consequently it is possible to read out quantum information in the smallest devices, offering new avenues for the coherent manipulation down to single molecules.

Abstract

An unresolved challenge facing electronics at a few-nm scale is that resistive channels start leaking due to quantum tunneling. This affects the performance of nanoscale transistors, with single-molecule devices displaying particularly low switching ratios and operating frequencies, combined with large subthreshold swings.1 The usual strategy to mitigate quantum effects has been to increase device complexity, but theory shows that if quantum effects are exploited correctly, they can simultaneously lower energy consumption and boost device performance.2-6 Here, we demonstrate experimentally how the performance of molecular transistors can be improved when the resistive channel contains two destructively-interfering waves. We use a zinc-porphyrin coupled to graphene electrodes in a three-terminal transistor device to demonstrate a >104 conductance-switching ratio, a subthreshold swing at the thermionic limit, a > 7 kHz operating frequency, and stability over >105 cycles. This performance is competitive with the best nanoelectronic transistors. We fully map the antiresonance interference features in conductance, reproduce the behaviour by density functional theory calculations, and trace back this high performance to the coupling between molecular orbitals and graphene edge states. These results demonstrate how the quantum nature of electron transmission at the nanoscale can enhance, rather than degrade, device performance, and highlight directions for future development of miniaturised electronics., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Quantum interference in nano-electronic devices could lead to reduced-energy computing and efficient thermoelectric energy harvesting. When devices are shrunk down to the molecular level it is still unclear to what extent electron transmission is phase coherent, as molecules usually act as scattering centres, without the possibility of showing particle-wave duality. Here we show electron transmission remains phase coherent in molecular porphyrin nanoribbons, synthesized with perfectly defined geometry, connected to graphene electrodes. The device acts as a graphene Fabry-P\'erot interferometer, allowing direct probing of the transport mechanisms throughout several regimes, including the Kondo one. Electrostatic gating allows measurement of the molecular conductance in multiple molecular oxidation states, demonstrating a thousand-fold increase of the current by interference, and unravelling molecular and graphene transport pathways. These results demonstrate a platform for the use of interferometric effects in single-molecule junctions, opening up new avenues for studying quantum coherence in molecular electronic and spintronic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The interplay between nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom strongly influences molecular charge transport. Herein, we report on transport through a porphyrin dimer molecule, weakly coupled to graphene electrodes, that displays sequential tunneling within the Coulomb-blockade regime. The sequential transport is initiated by current-induced phonon absorption and proceeds by rapid sequential transport via a non-equilibrium vibrational distribution. We demonstrate this is possible only when the vibrational dissipation is slow relative to sequential tunneling rates, and obtain a lower bound for the vibrational relaxation time of 8 ns, a value that is dependent on the molecular charge state., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Many-body electron interactions are at the heart of chemistry and solid-state physics. Understanding these interactions is crucial for the development of molecular-scale quantum and nanoelectronic devices. Here, we investigate single-electron tunneling through an edge-fused porphyrin oligomer and demonstrate that its transport behavior is well described by the Hubbard dimer model. This allows us to study the role of electron-electron interactions in the transport setting. In particular, we empirically determine the molecule's on-site and inter-site electron-electron repulsion energies, which are in good agreement with density functional calculations, and establish the molecular electronic structure within various charge states. The gate-dependent rectification behavior is used to further confirm the selection rules and state degeneracies resulting from the Hubbard model. We therefore demonstrate that current flow through the molecule is governed by a non-trivial set of vibrationally coupled electronic transitions between various many-body states, and experimentally confirm the importance of electron-electron interactions in single-molecule devices., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

BackgroundAlthough specific interventions previously demonstrated benefit in patients with ARDS, use of these interventions is inconsistent, and patient mortality remains high. The impact of variability in center management practices on ARDS mortality rates remains unknown.Research questionWhat is the impact of treatment variability on mortality in patients with moderate to severe ARDS in the United States?Study design and methodsWe conducted a multicenter, observational cohort study of mechanically ventilated adults with ARDS and Pao2 to Fio2 ratio of ≤ 150 with positive end-expiratory pressure of ≥ 5 cm H2O, who were admitted to 29 US centers between October 1, 2016, and April 30, 2017. The primary outcome was 28-day in-hospital mortality. Center variation in ventilator management, adjunctive therapy use, and mortality also were assessed.ResultsA total of 2,466 patients were enrolled. Median baseline Pao2 to Fio2 ratio was 105 (interquartile range, 78.0-129.0). In-hospital 28-day mortality was 40.7%. Initial adherence to lung protective ventilation (LPV; tidal volume, ≤ 6.5 mL/kg predicted body weight; plateau pressure, or when unavailable, peak inspiratory pressure, ≤ 30 mm H2O) was 31.4% and varied between centers (0%-65%), as did rates of adjunctive therapy use (27.1%-96.4%), methods used (neuromuscular blockade, prone positioning, systemic steroids, pulmonary vasodilators, and extracorporeal support), and mortality (16.7%-73.3%). Center standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), calculated using baseline patient-level characteristics to derive expected mortality rate, ranged from 0.33 to 1.98. Of the treatment-level factors explored, only center adherence to early LPV was correlated with SMR.InterpretationSubstantial center-to-center variability exists in ARDS management, suggesting that further opportunities for improving ARDS outcomes exist. Early adherence to LPV was associated with lower center mortality and may be a surrogate for overall quality of care processes. Abstract

A nanoring-rotaxane supramolecular assembly, with a Cy7 cyanine dye (hexamethylindotricarbocyanine) threaded along the axis of the nanoring, has been synthesized as a model for the energy transfer between the light harvesting complex LH1 and the reaction center in purple bacteria photosynthesis. The complex displays efficient energy transfer from the central cyanine dye to the surrounding zinc porphyrin nanoring. Abstract

Carbon allotropes built from rings of two-coordinate atoms, known as cyclo[n]carbons, have fascinated chemists for many years, but until now they could not be isolated or structurally characterized, due to their high reactivity. We generated cyclo[18]carbon (C18) using atom manipulation on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111) at 5 Kelvin by eliminating carbon monoxide from a cyclocarbon oxide molecule C24O6. Characterization of cyclo[18]carbon by high-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed a polyynic structure with defined positions of alternating triple and single bonds. The high reactivity of cyclocarbon and cyclocarbon oxides allows covalent coupling between molecules to be induced by atom manipulation, opening an avenue for the synthesis of other carbon allotropes and carbon-rich materials from the coalescence of cyclocarbon molecules.

Abstract

Cyclo[18]carbon (C18, a molecular carbon allotrope) can be synthesized by dehalogenation of a bromocyclocarbon precursor, C18Br6, in 64% yield, by atomic manipulation on a sodium chloride bilayer on Cu(111) at 5 K, and imaged by high-resolution atomic force microscopy. This method of generating C18 gives a higher yield than that reported previously from the cyclocarbon oxide C24O6. The experimental images of C18 were compared with simulated images for four theoretical model geometries, including possible bond-angle alternation: D18h cumulene, D9h polyyne, D9h cumulene, and C9h polyyne. Cumulenic structures, with (D9h) and without (D18h) bond-angle alternation, can be excluded. Polyynic structures, with (C9h) and without (D9h) bond-angle alternation, both show a good agreement with the experiment and are challenging to differentiate.

Abstract

Off-resonant charge transport through molecular junctions has been extensively studied since the advent of single-molecule electronics and it is now well understood within the framework of the non-interacting Landauer approach. Conversely, gaining a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the resonant transport regime has proven more elusive. Here, we study resonant charge transport through graphene-based zinc-porphyrin junctions. We experimentally demonstrate an inadequacy of the non-interacting Landauer theory as well as the conventional single-mode Franck-Condon model. Instead, we model the overall charge transport as a sequence of non-adiabatic electron transfers, the rates of which depend on both outer and inner-sphere vibrational interactions. We show that the transport properties of our molecular junctions are determined by a combination of electron-electron and electron-vibrational coupling, and are sensitive to the interactions with the wider local environment. Abstract

The regular packing of atoms, molecules and nanoparticles provides the basis for the understanding of structural order within condensed phases of matter. Typically the constituent particles are considered to be rigid with a fixed shape. Here we show, through a combined experimental and numerical study of the adsorption of cyclic porphyrin polymers, nanorings, on a graphite surface, that flexible molecules can exhibit a rich and complex packing behaviour. Depending on the number of porphyrin sub-units within the nanoring we observe either a highly ordered hexagonal phase or frustrated packing driven by directional interactions which for some arrangements is combined with the internal deformation of the cyclic polymer. Frustration and deformation occur in arrays of polymers with ten sub-units since close packing and co-alignment of neighbouring groups cannot be simultaneously realised for nanorings with this internal symmetry.

Abstract

Quantum coherence is highly involved in photochemical functioning of complex molecular systems. Co-existence and intermixing of electronic and/or vibrational coherences, while never unambiguously identified experimentally, has been proposed to be responsible for this phenomenon. Analysis of multidimensional spectra of a synthetic belt-shaped molecular six-porphyrin nanoring with an inner template clearly shows a great diversity of separable electronic, vibrational and mixed coherences and their cooperation shaping the optical response. The results yield clear assignment of electronic and vibronic states, estimation of excitation transfer rates, and decoherence times. Theoretical considerations prove that the complexity of excitation dynamics and spectral features of the nanoring excitation spectrum is due to combined effect of cyclic symmetry, small geometrical deformations, and vibronic coupling.

Abstract

The representation of information within the spins of electrons and nuclei has been powerful in the ongoing development of quantum computers. Although nuclear spins are advantageous as quantum bits (qubits) due to their long coherence lifetimes (exceeding seconds), they exhibit very slow spin interactions and have weak polarisation. A coupled electron spin can be used to polarise the nuclear spin and create fast single-qubit gates, however, the permanent presence of electron spins is a source of nuclear decoherence. Here we show how a transient electron spin, arising from the optically excited triplet state of C60, can be used to hyperpolarise, manipulate and measure two nearby nuclear spins. Implementing a scheme which uses the spinor nature of the electron, we performed an entangling gate in hundreds of nanoseconds: five orders of magnitude faster than the liquid-state J coupling. This approach can be widely applied to systems comprising an electron spin coupled to multiple nuclear spins, such as NV centres, while the successful use of a transient electron spin motivates the design of new molecules able to exploit photo-excited triplet states., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Molecular nanostructures may constitute the fabric of future quantum technologies, if their degrees of freedom can be fully harnessed. Ideally one might use nuclear spins as low-decoherence qubits and optical excitations for fast controllable interactions. Here, we present a method for entangling two nuclear spins through their mutual coupling to a transient optically-excited electron spin, and investigate its feasibility through density functional theory and experiments on a test molecule. From our calculations we identify the specific molecular properties that permit high entangling power gates under simple optical and microwave pulses; synthesis of such molecules is possible with established techniques.

Abstract

When designing a molecular electronic device for a specific function, it is necessary to control whether the charge‐transport mechanism is phase‐coherent transmission or particle‐like hopping. Here we report a systematic study of charge transport through single zinc‐porphyrin molecules embedded in graphene nanogaps to form transistors, and show that the transport mechanism depends on the chemistry of the molecule–electrode interfaces. We show that van der Waals interactions between molecular anchoring groups and graphene yield transport characteristic of Coulomb blockade with incoherent sequential hopping, whereas covalent molecule–electrode amide bonds give intermediately or strongly coupled single‐molecule devices that display coherent transmission. These findings demonstrate the importance of interfacial engineering in molecular electronic circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

V-Shaped porphyrin dimers, with masked p-phenylene bridges, undergo efficient oxidative coupling to form meso-meso linked cyclic porphyrin oligomers. Reductive aromatization unmasks the p-phenylenes, increasing the strain. Oxidation then fuses the porphyrin dimers, providing a nanoring with curved walls. The strain in this macrocycle bends the p-phenylene and fused porphyrin dimer units (radii of curvature of 11.4 and 19.0 Å, respectively), but it does not significantly alter the electronic structure of the fused porphyrins.
