12. Asperitas – a newly identified cloud supplementary feature

Abstract

Cloud images obtained through a crowd-sourced international observing network suggest a cloud variety that has hitherto not been explicitly classified. This cloud feature shows a\ud roughened base, which, under some solar illumination conditions, provides a particularly dramatic appearance. The growing body of photographic observations have led the World\ud Meteorological Organisation to consider adding ‘asperitas’ to the 2017 edition of the International Cloud Atlas as a new form of supplementary cloud feature. We compare\ud reported sightings with available meteorological data to investigate the conditions that give rise to this newly recognised cloud description.

Abstract

Chemically diverse polymer microarrays as a powerful screening tool for the discovery of new materials for a variety of applications., Materials discovery provides the opportunity to identify novel materials that are tailored to complex biological environments by using combinatorial mixing of monomers to form large libraries of polymers as micro arrays. The materials discovery approach is predicated on the use of the largest chemical diversity possible, yet previous studies into human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) response to polymer microarrays have been limited to 20 or so different monomer identities in each study. Here we show that it is possible to print and assess cell adhesion of 141 different monomers in a microarray format. This provides access to the largest chemical space to date, allowing us to meet the regenerative medicine challenge to provide scalable synthetic culture ware. This study identifies new materials suitable for hPSC expansion that could not have been predicted from previous knowledge of cell-material interactions.

37. Ultrapulse welding: A new joining technique

Abstract

The ultrapulse process is a resistance welding process that utilizes unidirectional current of high magnitude for a very short time with a precisely controlled dynamic force pulse. Peak currents of up to 220,000 amperes for two to ten milliseconds are used with synchronized force pulses of up to nine thousand pounds. The welding current passing through the relatively high resistance of the interface between the parts that are being joined results in highly localized heating. Described is the UPW process as it applies to the automotive industry.

Abstract

Infection by pathogenic bacteria on implanted and indwelling medical devices during surgery causes large morbidity and mortality worldwide. Attempts to ameliorate this important medical issue have included development of antimicrobial surfaces on materials, 'no touch' surgical procedures, and development of materials with inherent low pathogen attachment. The search for new materials is increasingly being carried out by high throughput methods. Efficient methods for extracting knowledge from these large data sets are essential. Data from a large polymer microarray exposed to three clinical pathogens is used to derive robust and predictive machine-learning models of pathogen attachment. The models can predict pathogen attachment for the polymer library quantitatively. The models also successfully predict pathogen attachment for a second-generation library, and identify polymer surface chemistries that enhance or diminish pathogen attachment.
