Abstract

Refractive index is a fundamental optical property of powder and a key input to the measurement of the size distribution using light scattering and the measurement of the absorption and scattering coefficients using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. In this work, we demonstrate a method that combines index matching with phase imaging to determine the refractive index of complex powder particles at high accuracy without relying on any assumptions. Index matching is robust, but the accuracy is not high by relying on ocular observation of the interface. Phase imaging using interferometry improves the accuracy of determining the match by an order of magnitude. Using the proposed method, we determine the refractive index of four types of pharmaceutical powder in the short-wave infrared range of 1100-1650 nm.

23. The Universal Genre Sphere: A Curricular Model Integrating GBA and UDL to Promote Equitable Academic Writing Instruction for EAL University Students

Abstract

This paper proposes the design of an instructional model, referred to as the universal genre sphere, for teaching academic writing in a manner appropriate to all learners, but developed especially with consideration for the needs of English as additional language students with or without diagnosed learning differences. Despite growing research on, variously, second-language writing, English as an additional language and learning differences, there has been relatively little work that explores approaches to the intersections of these topics. Thus, the proposed universal genre sphere model is founded on the pillars of universal design for learning and the tenets of the genre-based approach, especially the teaching-learning cycle, to create more equitable and inclusive, as well as effective, learning environments. The universal genre sphere balances inclusive design that draws upon students' interests, while breaking learning into manageable and adjustable segments, thus making academic writing more accessible to a greater number of learners. The combination of universal design for learning and the genre-based approach represents an opportunity to create a shift in second-language writing instruction (and, potentially, in L1 writing instruction) that aligns with the principles of inclusive education by reducing barriers in the classroom and providing students with multiple pathways to participate, which could do much to advance knowledge about more inclusive, equitable and effective writing instruction for all learners.

28. Public acceptance of nature-based solutions : towards sustainable natural hazard risk reduction

Abstract

Without action, global impacts from natural hazards are expected to increase in frequency and severity due to climate change and concurrent ecological and social crises. Nature-based solutions (NbS) are sustainable approaches to disaster risk reduction (DRR) that provide multiple additional benefits for nature and to a range of stakeholders. NbS contrast with 'grey' infrastructure measures, which rely on non-natural materials, generally aim to address a single issue, and have fewer societal co-benefits. NbS are generally conceptualized as 'green' measures, although 'hybrid' measures (combining green and grey) are also NbS. DRR measures often rely on public and community buy-in for their success, but NbS amplify this reliance with their emphasis on co-creation, -implementation, and -monitoring. Public acceptance is therefore directly linked to the ability of NbS to provide benefits, including DRR. Although NbS research increasingly focuses on barriers to its uptake, there is a lack of research on public acceptance of local residents in NbS 'host communities'. Instead, it is often taken for granted that current high levels of public acceptance of NbS at European scale will be replicated at local levels and maintained over time. Additionally, there is a lack of past research that compares perceptions of NbS and grey measures, explores a broad range of factors that may influence public acceptance, and determines preferences across the full green-hybrid-grey spectrum. This research, conducted within the Horizon 2020 OPERANDUM project, aims to determine factors that contribute to positive or negative attitudes and behaviours towards NbS for DRR. A systematic literature review was carried out, followed by citizen surveys and focus groups at planned European NbS sites. Surveys were conducted in Scotland (landslides; n=66 respondents), Finland (lake eutrophication; n=204) and Greece (flooding; n=84), followed by in-depth focus groups (n=4) at the Scotland site. Results from the three methods noted above show generally high public acceptance, but also consistently highlight scepticism regarding NbS effectiveness for DRR and uncertainty surrounding the approach as barriers to acceptance. Dozens of factors that can influence acceptance were identified and, despite variation in the strength of factors across study sites, several consistencies emerged. For example, public trust in implementers was important for positive attitudes towards the NbS, while perceptions of place were important for pro-NbS behaviour (i.e., engagement). Cultural ecosystem services, and especially aesthetic value, were highlighted as crucial determinants of acceptance throughout. However, in the Scotland site, the effectiveness of the NbS for reducing risk was paramount and therefore the perceived limitations of NbS drove preferences towards greyer (i.e., more hybrid) measures. This thesis emphasises a need for more focus on the importance of meeting public expectations for risk reduction, providing cultural ecosystem services as co-benefits, centering people-place relations in NbS work, and considering the efficacy and support of hybrid rather than purely green options. Additionally, the Public Acceptance of NbS framework [PA-NbS] is introduced in the review as a starting point for NbS researchers and practitioners to systematise their consideration of public acceptance and how it can be increased. It includes overarching recommendations: provide benefits, increase awareness of benefits, communicate effectively, and promote participation. Each recommendation has four corresponding success criteria which, through the subsequent analyses, are tailored to both the specific contexts of the study sites and for NbS projects globally. Using interdisciplinary concepts and a mixed-methods approach, this research takes a critical perspective with the practice-oriented aim of improving the sustainable success of NbS for DRR. With this, further research is called for to better understand public expectations of NbS, how best to frame NbS and their (co-)benefits to different stakeholders, and how acceptance may change through time based on evidence of NbS performance.

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) results from disordered brain-gut interactions. Identifying susceptibility genes could highlight the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. We designed a digestive health questionnaire for UK Biobank and combined identified cases with IBS with independent cohorts. We conducted a genome-wide association study with 53,400 cases and 433,201 controls and replicated significant associations in a 23andMe panel (205,252 cases and 1,384,055 controls). Our study identified and confirmed six genetic susceptibility loci for IBS. Implicated genes included NCAM1, CADM2, PHF2/FAM120A, DOCK9, CKAP2/TPTE2P3 and BAG6. The first four are associated with mood and anxiety disorders, expressed in the nervous system, or both. Mirroring this, we also found strong genome-wide correlation between the risk of IBS and anxiety, neuroticism and depression (rg > 0.5). Additional analyses suggested this arises due to shared pathogenic pathways rather than, for example, anxiety causing abdominal symptoms. Implicated mechanisms require further exploration to help understand the altered brain-gut interactions underlying IBS.

38. Graphic Organizers Support Young L2 Writers' Argumentative Skills

Abstract

This qualitative study had the objective of analyzing the influence of graphic organizers on the development of written argumentative tasks in a group of sixth-grade Colombian L2 English learners. Learners are increasingly required to analyze information presented in languages other than their first critically to form reasoned opinions and solve problems. It is thus urgent to develop their argumentation skills, needed not only for academic success but also later professional life--and, indeed, by participant citizens in democratic societies. Although there has been some increased interest in teaching argumentation at primary and secondary levels, this remains relatively unexplored Colombia, certainly when considering writing in a second language. For the present study, data were collected through a questionnaire, a survey, a focus group, a teachers' journal, and students' written artifacts and analyzed through the grounded theory approach. Findings revealed that using graphic organizers influenced learners' argumentative writing skills positively, specifically through supporting strategic information planning and argumentative linearization during the pre- and while-writing stages. These understandings, which show that younger learners can develop complex argumentative writing skills in a second language, offer significant lessons for teachers of language--and content--in both the first and additional languages.

Abstract

Everyone eats. However, people do not always know what to eat. They need a little help and inspiration. Consequently, a number of apps, services, and programs have developed recommenders around food. These cover food, meal, recipe, and restaurant recommendations, which are the most common use cases, but also other areas such as substitute ingredients, menus, and diets. The latter is especially important in the area of health and wellness where users have more specific dietary needs and goals. In this survey, we review the food recommender literature. We cover the types of systems in terms of their goals and what they are recommending, the datasets and signals that they use to train models, the technical approaches and model types used, as well as some of the system constraints., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures
