We present a method for determining the atom number distribution of few atoms in a tight optical tweezer from their fluorescence distributions. In the tight tweezer regime, the detection light causes rapid atom loss due to light-assisted collisions. This in turn leads to non-Poissonian and overlapping fluorescence distributions for different initial atom numbers, and commonly used threshold techniques fail. We use maximum likelihood estimation algorithms to fit model distributions that account for the atom loss. This gives accurate atom number distributions for relatively few experimental runs (about 600 is sufficient) to sample a photon number distribution. We show that the method can be extended to situations when the photon number distributions for known initial atom numbers cannot be modeled, at the cost of requiring a higher number of experimental runs.

We present a comprehensive analysis of a planetary microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-1609. The planetary anomaly was detected by two survey telescopes, OGLE and MOA. Each of these surveys collected enough data over the planetary anomaly to allow for an unambiguous planet detection. Such survey detections of planetary anomalies are needed to build a robust sample of planets that could improve studies on the microlensing planetary occurrence rate by reducing biases and statistical uncertainties. In this work, we examined different methods for modeling microlensing events using individual datasets, particularly we incorporated a Galactic model prior to better constrain poorly defined microlensing parallax. Ultimately, we fitted a comprehensive model to all available data, identifying three potential typologies, with two showing comparably high Bayesian evidence. Our analysis indicates that the host of the planet is a brown dwarf with a probability of 34%, or a low-mass stellar object (M-dwarf) with the probability of 66%., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The typically large distances, extinction, and crowding of Galactic supermassive star clusters have so far hampered the identification of their very low mass members, required to extend our understanding of star and planet formation, and early stellar evolution, to starburst. This situation has now evolved thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and its unmatched resolution and sensitivity in the infrared. In this paper, the third of the series of the Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey (EWOCS), we present JWST/NIRCam and JWST/MIRI observations of the supermassive star cluster Westerlund 1. These observations are specifically designed to unveil the cluster members down to the BD mass regime, and to allow us to select and study the protoplanetary disks and to study the mutual feedback between the cluster members and the surrounding environment. Westerlund 1 was observed as part of JWST GO-1905 for 23.6 hours. The data have been reduced using the JWST calibration pipeline, together with specific tools necessary to remove artifacts. Source identification and photometry were performed with DOLPHOT. The MIRI images show a plethora of different features. Diffuse nebular emission is observed around the cluster, which is typically composed of myriads of droplet-like features pointing toward the cluster center or the group of massive stars surrounding the WR star W72/A. A long pillar is also observed in the NW. The MIRI images also show resolved shells and outflows surrounding the M-type RSG W20, W26, W75, and W237, the sgB[e] star W9 and the YHG W4. The color-magnitude diagrams built using the NIRCam photometry show a clear cluster sequence, which is marked in its upper part by the 1828 NIRCam stars with X-ray counterparts. NIRCam observations using the F115W filter have reached the 23.8 mag limit with 50\% completeness (roughly corresponding to a 0.06 Msol brown dwarf)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the most comprehensive and deepest X-ray study to date of the properties of the richest Wolf-Rayet (WR) population observed in a single stellar cluster, Westerlund 1 (Wd1). This work is based on 36 Chandra observations obtained from the "Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey" (EWOCS) project, plus 8 archival Chandra observations. The overall exposure depth (~1.1 Ms) and baseline of the EWOCS observations extending over more than one year enable us to perform a detailed photometric, colour, and spectral analysis, as well as to search for short- and long-term periodicity. In X-rays, we detect 20 out of the 24 known Wolf-Rayet stars in Wd1 down to an observed luminosity of ~7$\times10^{29}$erg s$^{-1}$ (assuming a distance of 4.23 kpc to Wd1), with 8 WR stars being detected in X-rays for the first time. Nine stars show clear evidence of variability over the year-long baseline, with clear signs of periodicity. The X-ray colours and spectral analysis reveal that the vast majority of the WR stars are hard X-ray sources (kT$\geq$2.0keV). The Fe XXV emission line at ~6.7 keV, which commonly originates from the wind-wind collision zone in binary systems, is detected for the first time in the spectra of 17 WR stars in Wd1. In addition the ~6.4 keV fluorescent line is observed in the spectra of three stars, indicating that dense cold material coexists with the hot gas in these systems. Overall, our X-ray results alone suggest a very high binary fraction ($\geq$80%) for the WR star population in Wd1. When combining our results with properties of the WR population from other wavelengths, we estimate a binary fraction of $\geq$92%, which could even reach unity. This suggests that either all the most massive stars are found in binary systems within Wd1, or that binarity is essential for the formation of such a rich population of WR stars., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. Context. High frame-rate imaging was employed to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence (seeing) in observations of globular cluster Terzan 5. Aims. High-precision time-series photometry has been obtained with the highest angular resolution so far taken in the crowded central region of Terzan 5, with ground-based telescopes, and ways to avoid saturation of the brightest stars in the field observed. Methods. The Electron-Multiplying Charge Coupled Device (EMCCD) camera installed at the Danish 1.54-m telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory was employed to produce thousands of short-exposure time images (ten images per second) that were stacked to produce the normal-exposure-time images (minutes). We employed difference image analysis in the stacked images to produce high-precision photometry using the DanDIA pipeline. Results. Light curves of 1670 stars with 242 epochs were analyzed in the crowded central region of Terzan 5 to statistically detect variable stars in the field observed. We present a possible visual counterpart outburst at the position of the pulsar J1748-2446N, and the visual counterpart light curve of the low-mass X-ray binary CX 3. Additionally, we present the discovery of 4 semiregular variables. We also present updated ephemerides and properties of the only RR Lyrae star previously known in the field covered by our observations in Terzan 5. Finally, we report a significant displacement of two sources by ~0.62 and 0.59 arcseconds with respect to their positions in previous images available in the literature., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. Understanding the atmospheric parameters of stars on the top of the RGB is essential to reveal the chemical composition of the Milky Way, as they can be used to probe the farthest parts of our Galaxy. Our goal is to determine the chemical composition of 21 RGB stars with $T_{\mathrm{eff}}<4200$K selected from the APOGEE-2 DR17 database using new observations carried out with the spectrograph mounted on the 1-m telescope of the Hungarian Piszk\'estet\H{o} Observatory and the SONG spectrograph (R=77000) on the Hertzsprung SONG telescope in the 4500$-$5800\r{A} wavelength range. This is the first time the spectrograph (R=18000) on the 1-m telescope at Piszk\'estet\H{o} Observatory was used to measure the abundances of stars. We created a new LTE spectral library using MARCS model atmospheres and SYNSPEC by including the line list of 23 molecules to determine atmospheric parameters ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], [$\alpha$/Fe]) and abundances of Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Ni with FERRE. The resulting parameters were compared to that of APOGEE. We found a good agreement in general, the average difference is $-$11.2K in $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$, 0.11dex in $\log g$, 0.10dex in [Fe/H], and $-$0.01dex in [$\alpha$/Fe]. Context. With a mass exceeding several 10^4 solar masses and a rich and dense population of massive stars, supermassive young star clusters represent the most massive star-forming environment that is dominated by the feedback from massive stars and gravitational interactions among stars. Aims. In this paper we present the "Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey" (EWOCS) project, which aims to investigate the influence of the starburst environment on the formation of stars and planets, and on the evolution of both low and high mass stars. The primary targets of this project are Westerlund 1 and 2, the closest supermassive star clusters to the Sun. Methods. The project is based primarily on recent observations conducted with the Chandra and JWST observatories. Specifically, the Chandra survey of Westerlund 1 consists of 36 new ACIS-I observations, nearly co-pointed, for a total exposure time of 1 Msec. Additionally, we included 8 archival Chandra/ACIS-S observations. This paper presents the resulting catalog of X-ray sources within and around Westerlund 1. Sources were detected by combining various existing methods, and photon extraction and source validation were carried out using the ACIS-Extract software. Results. The EWOCS X-ray catalog comprises 5963 validated sources out of the 9420 initially provided to ACIS-Extract, reaching a photon flux threshold of approximately 2x10^-8 photons/cm^2/s. The X-ray sources exhibit a highly concentrated spatial distribution, with 1075 sources located within the central 1 arcminute. We have successfully detected X-ray emissions from 126 out of the 166 known massive stars of the cluster, and we have collected over 71000 photons from the magnetar CXO J164710.20-455217, Comment: The paper has been accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Methods: Broad- and narrow-band imaging of AFGL 5180 was made in the NIR with the LBT, in both seeing-limited ($\sim0.5\arcsec$) and high angular resolution ($\sim0.09\arcsec$) Adaptive Optics (AO) modes, as well as with HST. Archival ALMA continuum data was also utilized. Results: At least 40 jet knots were identified via NIR emission from H$_2$ and [FeII] tracing shocked gas. Bright jet knots outflowing from the central most massive protostar, S4, are detected towards the east of the source and are resolved in fine detail with the AO imaging. Additional knots are distributed throughout the field, likely indicating the presence of multiple driving sources. Sub-millimeter sources detected by ALMA are shown to be grouped in two main complexes, AFGL 5180 M and a small cluster $\sim15\arcsec$ to the south, AFGL 5180 S. From our NIR continuum images we identify YSO candidates down to masses of $\sim 0.1\:M_\odot$. Combined with the sub-mm sources, this yields a surface number density of such YSOs of $N_* \sim 10^3 {\rm pc}^{-2}$ within a projected radius of about 0.1 pc. Such a value is similar to those predicted by models of both Core Accretion from a turbulent clump environment and Competitive Accretion. The radial profile of $N_*$ is relatively flat on scales out to 0.2~pc, with only modest enhancement around the massive protostar inside 0.05~pc. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the utility of high-resolution NIR imaging, in particular with AO, for detecting outflow activity and YSOs in distant regions. The presented images reveal the complex morphology of outflow-shocked gas within the large-scale bipolar flow of a massive protostar, as well as clear evidence for several other outflow driving sources in the region. Here we report an ensemble study of 214 A- and F-type stars observed by \textit{Kepler}, exhibiting the so-called \textit{hump and spike} periodic signal, explained by Rossby modes (r~modes) -- the \textit{hump} -- and magnetic stellar spots or overstable convective (OsC) modes -- the \textit{spike} -- respectively. We determine the power confined in the non-resolved hump features and find additional gravity~modes (g~modes) humps always occurring at higher frequencies than the spike. Furthermore, we derive projected rotational velocities from FIES, SONG and HERMES spectra for 28 stars and the stellar inclination angle for 89 stars. We find a strong correlation between the spike amplitude and the power in the r and g~modes, which suggests that both types of oscillations are mechanically excited by either stellar spots or OsC modes. Our analysis suggests that stars with a higher power in $m=1$ r~modes humps are more likely to also exhibit humps at higher azimuthal orders ($m$ = 2, 3, or 4). Interestingly, all stars that show g~modes humps are hotter and more luminous than the observed red edge of the $\delta$ Scuti instability strip, suggesting that either magnetic fields or convection in the outer layers could play an important role., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

Fundamental stellar parameters such as mass and radius are some of the most important building blocks in astronomy, both when it comes to understanding the star itself and when deriving the properties of any exoplanet(s) they may host. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations allows us to determine these parameters with high precision. We investigate the solar-like oscillations of the red-giant-branch star $\gamma$ Cep A, which harbours a giant planet on a wide orbit. We did this by utilising both ground-based radial velocities from the SONG network and space-borne photometry from the NASA TESS mission. From the radial velocities and photometric observations, we created a combined power spectrum, which we used in an asteroseismic analysis to extract individual frequencies. We clearly identify several radial and quadrupole modes as well as multiple mixed, dipole modes. We used these frequencies along with spectroscopic and astrometric constraints to model the star, and we find a mass of $1.27^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ M$_\odot$, a radius of $4.74^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ R$_\odot$, and an age of $5.7^{+0.8}_{-0.9}$ Gyr. We then used the mass of $\gamma$ Cep A and our SONG radial velocities to derive masses for $\gamma$ Cep B and $\gamma$ Cep Ab of $0.328^{+0.009}_{-0.012}$ M$_\odot$ and $6.6^{+2.3}_{-2.8}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$, respectively., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The NISP (Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer) is one of the two Euclid instruments. It operates in the near-IR spectral region (950-2020nm) as a photometer and spectrometer. The instrument is composed of: a cold (135 K) optomechanical subsystem consisting of a Silicon carbide structure, an optical assembly, a filter wheel mechanism, a grism wheel mechanism, a calibration unit, and a thermal control system, a detection system based on a mosaic of 16 H2RG with their front-end readout electronic, and a warm electronic system (290 K) composed of a data processing / detector control unit and of an instrument control unit that interfaces with the spacecraft via a 1553 bus for command and control and via Spacewire links for science data. The GOLF instrument on board SoHO has been in operation for almost 25 years but aging of the instrument has now strongly affected its performance, especially in the low-frequency p-mode region. At the end of the SoHO mission, the ground-based network BiSON will remain the only facility able to perform Sun-integrated helioseismic observations. Therefore, we want to assess the helioseismic performances of an \'echelle spectrograph like SONG. Indeed, the high precision of such an instrument and the quality of the data acquired for asteroseismic purpose calls for an evaluation of the instrument ability to perform global radial-velocity measurements of the solar disk. Data acquired during the Solar-SONG 2018 observation campaign at the Teide Observatory are used to study mid- and low-frequency p modes. A Solar-SONG time series of 30-day duration is reduced with a combination of the traditional IDL iSONG pipeline and a new Python pipeline described in this paper. A mode fitting method built around a Bayesian approach is then performed on the Solar-SONG and contemporaneous GOLF, BiSON, and HMI data. For this contemporaneous time series, Solar-SONG is able to characterise p modes at a lower frequency than BiSON and GOLF (1750{\mu}Hz against 1946 and 2157 {\mu}Hz respectively), while for HMI it is possible to characterise a mode at 1686 {\mu}Hz. The decrease of GOLF sensitivity is then evaluated through the evolution of its low-frequency p-mode characterisation abilities over the years. [abridged], Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures. Young Massive Clusters (YMCs) and Super Star Clusters (SSCs) represent an extreme mode of star formation. Far-infrared imaging of the Magellanic Clouds has identified one potential embedded SSC, HSO BMHERICC J72.971176-69.391112 (HH in short), in the south-west outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present Gemini Flamingos 2 and GSAOI near-infrared imaging of a 3'x3' region around HH in order to characterize the stellar content of the cluster. The stellar content is probed down to 1.5 Msun. We find substantial dust extinction across the cluster region, extending up to A_K of 3. Deeply embedded stars are associated with ALMA-detected molecular gas suggesting that star formation is ongoing. The high spatial resolution of the GSAOI data allows identification of the central massive object associated with the 13CO ALMA observations and to detect fainter low-mass stars around the H30alpha ALMA source. The morphology of the molecular gas and the nebulosity from adjacent star formation suggest they have interacted covering a region of several pc. The total stellar content in the cluster is estimated from the intermediate- and high-mass stellar content to be at least 10000 Msun, less than R136 with up to 100 000 Msun within 4.7 pc radius, but places it in the regime of a super star cluster. Based on the extinction determination of individual stars we estimate a molecular gas mass in the vicinity of HH of 6600 Msun, suggesting more star formation can be expected., Comment: Acceepted, AJ

Aims: We aim to study the spot evolution and differential rotation in the magnetically active cool K-type giant star sigma Gem from broadband photometry and continuous spectroscopic observations that span 150 nights. Methods: We use high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra obtained with the Hertzsprung SONG telescope to reconstruct surface (photospheric) temperature maps with Doppler imaging techniques. The 303 observations span 150 nights and allow for a detailed analysis of the spot evolution and surface differential rotation. The Doppler imaging results are compared to simultaneous broadband photometry from the Tennessee State University T3 0.4 m Automated Photometric Telescope. The activity from the stellar chromosphere, which is higher in the stellar atmosphere, is also studied using SONG observations of Balmer H alpha line profiles and correlated with the photospheric activity. Results: The temperature maps obtained during eight consecutive stellar rotations show mainly high-latitude or polar spots, with the main spot concentrations above latitude 45 deg. The spots concentrate around phase 0.25 near the beginning of our observations and around phase 0.75 towards the end. The photometric observations confirm a small jump in spot phases that occurred in February 2016. The cross-correlation of the temperature maps reveals rather strong solar-like differential rotation, giving a relative surface differential rotation coefficient of $\alpha$ = 0.10 +/- 0.02. Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $\epsilon$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $\epsilon$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $\epsilon$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{\Delta Y}{\Delta Z}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. We investigate the photoassociation dynamics of exactly two laser-cooled $^{85}$Rb atoms in an optical tweezer and reveal fundamentally different behavior to photoassociation in many-atom ensembles. We observe non-exponential decay in our two-atom experiment that cannot be described by a single rate coefficient and find its origin in our system's pair correlation. This is in stark contrast to many-atom photoassociation dynamics, which are governed by exponential decay with a single rate coefficient. We also investigate photoassociation in a three-atom system, thereby probing the transition from two-atom dynamics to many-atom dynamics. Our experiments reveal additional reaction dynamics that are only accessible through the control of single atoms and suggest photoassociation could measure pair correlations in few-atom systems. The aim of the present work is to study structure and gas kinematics in the photodissociation regions (PDRs) around the compact HII regions S235A and S235C. We observe the [CII], [13CII] and [OI] line emission, using SOFIA/upGREAT and complement them by data of HCO+ and CO. We use the [13CII] line to measure the optical depth of the [CII] emission, and find that the [CII] line profiles are influenced by self-absorption, while the [13CII] line remains unaffected by these effects. Hence, for dense PDRs, [13CII] emission is a better tracer of gas kinematics. The optical depth of the [CII] line is up to 10 in S235A. We find an expanding motion of the [CII]-emitting layer of the PDRs into the front molecular layer in both regions. Comparison of the gas and dust columns shows that gas components visible neither in the [CII] nor in low-J CO lines may contribute to the total column across S235A. We test whether the observed properties of the PDRs match the predictions of spherical models of expanding HII region + PDR + molecular cloud. Integrated intensities of the [13CII], [CII] and [OI] lines are well-represented by the model, but the models do not reproduce the double-peaked [CII] line profiles due to an insufficient column density of C+. The model predicts that the [OI] line could be a more reliable tracer of gas kinematics, but the foreground self-absorbing material does not allow using it in the considered regions., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We present new Doppler images of both components of the double-lined binary $\sigma^{2}$ CrB, based on the high-resolution spectroscopic data collected during 11 nights in 2015 March--April. The observed spectra form two independent data sets with sufficient phase coverage. We apply the least-squares deconvolution to all observed spectra to obtain high signal-to-noise mean profiles, from which we derive the Doppler images of both components of $\sigma^{2}$ CrB simultaneously. The surfaces of both F9 and G0 components are dominated by pronounced polar spots. The F9 component exhibits a weak spot at latitude 30$^{\circ}$ and its mid-to-low latitudes are relatively featureless. The G0 star shows an extended spot structure at latitude 30$^{\circ}$, and its surface spot coverage is larger than that of the F9 star, which suggests a higher level of magnetic activity. With the cross-correlation method, we derive a solar-like surface differential rotation on the G0 star of $\sigma^{2}$ CrB for the first time, and the surface shear rate is $\Delta \Omega = 0.180 \pm 0.004$ rad d$^{-1}$ and $\alpha = \Delta \Omega / \Omega_{eq} = 0.032 \pm 0.001$. Purpose: To address the systematic bias in whole-brain dual flip angle (DFA) T1-mapping at 7T by optimizing the flip angle pair and carefully selecting RF pulse shape and duration. Theory and Methods: Spoiled gradient echoes can be used to estimate whole-brain maps of T1. This can be accomplished by using only two acquisitions with different flip angles, i.e., a DFA-based approach. Although DFA-based T1-mapping is seemingly straightforward to implement, it is sensitive to bias caused by incomplete spoiling and incidental magnetization transfer (MT) effects. Further bias is introduced by the increased B0 and B1+ inhomogeneities at 7T. Experiments were performed to determine the optimal flip angle pair and appropriate RF pulse shape and duration. Obtained T1 estimates were validated using inversion recovery prepared EPI and compared to literature values. A multi-echo readout was used to increase SNR, enabling quantification of R2* and susceptibility, X. Results: Incomplete spoiling was observed above a local flip angle of approximately 20 degrees. An asymmetric gauss-filtered sinc pulse with a constant duration of 700 us showed a sufficiently flat frequency response profile to avoid incomplete excitation in areas with high B0 offsets. A pulse duration of 700 us minimized effects from incidental MT. Conclusion: When performing DFA-based T1-mapping one should (i) limit the higher flip angle to avoid incomplete spoiling, (ii) use a RF pulse shape insensitive to B0 inhomogeneities and (iii) apply a constant RF pulse duration, balanced to minimize incidental MT., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

The introduction of optical tweezers for trapping atoms has opened remarkable opportunities for manipulating few-body systems. Here, we present the first bottom-up assembly of atom triads. We directly observe atom loss through inelastic collisions at the single event level, overcoming the substantial challenge in many-atom experiments of distinguishing one-, two-, and three-particle processes. We measure a strong suppression of three-body loss, which is not fully explained by the presently availably theory for three-body processes. The suppression of losses could indicate the presence of local anti-correlations due to the interplay of attractive short range interactions and low dimensional confinement. We report the discovery of a second planet orbiting the K giant star 7 CMa based on 166 high-precision radial velocities obtained with Lick, HARPS, UCLES and SONG. The periodogram analysis reveals two periodic signals of approximately 745 and 980 d, associated to planetary companions. A double-Keplerian orbital fit of the data reveals two Jupiter-like planets with minimum masses $m_b\sin i \sim 1.9 \,\mathrm{M_{J}}$ and $m_c\sin i \sim 0.9 \,\mathrm{M_{J}}$, orbiting at semi-major axes of $a_b \sim 1.75\,\mathrm{au}$ and $a_c \sim 2.15\,\mathrm{au}$, respectively. Given the small orbital separation and the large minimum masses of the planets close encounters may occur within the time baseline of the observations, thus, a more accurate N-body dynamical modeling of the available data is performed. The dynamical best-fit solution leads to collision of the planets and we explore the long-term stable configuration of the system in a Bayesian framework, confirming that 13% of the posterior samples are stable for at least 10 Myr. The result from the stability analysis indicates that the two-planets are trapped in a low-eccentricity 4:3 mean-motion resonance. This is only the third discovered system to be inside a 4:3 resonance, making it very valuable for planet formation and orbital evolution models., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We report the discovery of an exoplanet in microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-1649. The planet/host-star mass ratio is $q =7.2 \times 10^{-3}$ and the projected separation normalized by the Einstein radius is $s = 0.9$. The upper limit of the lens flux is obtained from adaptive optics observations by IRCS/Subaru, which excludes the probability of a G-dwarf or more massive host star and helps to put a tighter constraint on the lens mass as well as commenting on the formation scenarios of giant planets orbiting low-mass stars. We conduct a Bayesian analysis including constraints on the lens flux to derive the probability distribution of the physical parameters of the lens system. We thereby find that the masses of the host star and planet are $M_{L} = 0.34 \pm 0.19 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{p} = 2.5^{+1.5}_{-1.4} M_{Jup}$, respectively. The distance to the system is $D_{L} = 4.23^{+1.51}_{-1.64}$kpc. The projected star-planet separation is $a_{\perp} = 2.07^{+0.65}_{-0.77}$AU. The lens-source relative proper motion of the event is quite high, at $\sim 7.1 \, {\rm mas/yr}$. Therefore, we may be able to determine the lens physical parameters uniquely or place much stronger constraints on them by measuring the color-dependent centroid shift and/or the image elongation with additional high resolution imaging already a few years from now., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Transits in the planetary system WASP-4 were recently found to occur 80s earlier than expected in observations from the TESS satellite. We present 22 new times of mid-transit that confirm the existence of transit timing variations, and are well fitted by a quadratic ephemeris with period decay dP/dt = -9.2 +/- 1.1 ms/yr. We rule out instrumental issues, stellar activity and the Applegate mechanism as possible causes. The light-time effect is also not favoured due to the non-detection of changes in the systemic velocity. Orbital decay and apsidal precession are plausible but unproven. WASP-4b is only the third hot Jupiter known to show transit timing variations to high confidence. We report the discovery of MASCARA-3b, a hot Jupiter orbiting its bright (V = 8.33) late F-type host every $5.55149\pm 0.00001$ days in an almost circular orbit ($e = 0.050^{+0.020}_{-0.017}$). This is the fourth exoplanet discovered with the Multi-site All-Sky CAmeRA (MASCARA), and the first of these that orbits a late-type star. Follow-up spectroscopic measurements were obtained in and out of transit with the Hertzsprung SONG telescope. Combining the MASCARA photometry and SONG radial velocities reveals a radius and mass of $1.36\pm 0.05$ $R_{\text{Jup}}$ and $4.2\pm 0.2$ $M_{\text{Jup}}$. In addition, SONG spectroscopic transit observations were obtained on two separate nights. From analyzing the mean out-of-transit broadening function, we obtain $v\sin i_{\star} = 20.4\pm 0.4$ km s$^{-1}$. In addition, investigating the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, as observed in the distortion of the stellar lines directly and through velocity anomalies, we find the projected obliquity to be $\lambda = 1.2^{+8.2}_{-7.4}$ deg, which is consistent with alignment., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables; accepted in A&A. We present the analysis of stellar binary microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-0060 based on observations obtained from 13 different telescopes. Intensive coverage of the anomalous parts of the light curve was achieved by automated follow-up observations from the robotic telescopes of the Las Cumbres Observatory. We show that, for the first time, all main features of an anomalous microlensing event are well covered by follow-up data, allowing us to estimate the physical parameters of the lens. The strong detection of second-order effects in the event light curve necessitates the inclusion of longer-baseline survey data in order to constrain the parallax vector. We find that the event was most likely caused by a stellar binary-lens with masses $M_{\star1} = 0.87 \pm 0.12 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\star2} = 0.77 \pm 0.11 M_{\odot}$. The distance to the lensing system is 6.41 $\pm 0.14$ kpc and the projected separation between the two components is 13.85 $\pm 0.16$ AU. Although the 2P3/2-2P1/2 transition of [CII] at 158um is known to be an excellent tracer of active star formation, we still do not have a complete understanding of where within star formation regions the emission originates. Here, we use SOFIA upGREAT observations of [CII] emission toward the HII region complex Sh2-235 (S235) to better understand in detail the origin of [CII] emission. We complement these data with a fully-sampled Green Bank Telescope radio recombination line map tracing the ionized hydrogen gas. About half of the total [CII] emission associated with S235 is spatially coincident with ionized hydrogen gas, although spectroscopic analysis shows little evidence that this emission is coming from the ionized hydrogen volume. Velocity-integrated [CII] intensity is strongly correlated with WISE 12um intensity across the entire complex, indicating that both trace ultra-violet radiation fields. The 22um and radio continuum intensities are only correlated with [CII] intensity in the ionized hydrogen portion of the S235 region and the correlations between the [CII] and molecular gas tracers are poor across the region. We find similar results for emission averaged over a sample of external galaxies, although the strength of the correlations is weaker. Therefore, although many tracers are correlated with the strength of [CII] emission, only WISE 12um emission is correlated on small-scales of the individual HII region S235 and also has a decent correlation at the scale of entire galaxies. Future studies of a larger sample of Galactic HII regions would help to determine whether these results are truly representative., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Two groundbreaking new facilities will commence operations early in the 2020s and thereafter define much of the broad landscape of US optical-infrared astronomy in the remaining decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), perched atop Cerro Pachon in the Chilean Andes, will revolutionize the young field of Time Domain Astronomy through its wide-field, multi-band optical imaging survey. At the same time, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), orbiting at the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, will provide stunningly high-resolution views of selected targets from the red end of the optical spectrum to the mid-infrared. However, the spatial resolution of the LSST observations will be limited by atmospheric seeing, while JWST will be limited in its time-domain capabilities. This paper highlights the scientific opportunities lying between these two landmark missions, i.e., science enabled by systems capable of astronomical observations with both high cadence in the time domain and high resolution in the spatial domain. The opportunities range from constraining the late phases of stellar evolution in nearby resolved populations to constraining dark matter distributions and cosmology using lensed transient sources. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a fundamental property of star formation, offering key insight into the physics driving the process as well as informing our understanding of stellar populations, their by-products, and their impact on the surrounding medium. While the IMF appears to be fairly uniform in the Milky Way disk, it is not yet known how the IMF might behave across a wide range of environments, such as those with extreme gas temperatures and densities, high pressures, and low metallicities. We discuss new opportunities for measuring the IMF in such environments in the coming decade with JWST, WFIRST, and thirty-meter class telescopes. For the first time, we will be able to measure the high-mass slope and peak of the IMF via direct star counts for massive star clusters across the Milky Way and Local Group, providing stringent constraints for star formation theory and laying the groundwork for understanding distant and unresolved stellar systems., Comment: White paper submitted for Astro2020 Decadal Survey. 8 pages, 4 figures

We present broad-band photometry of eleven planetary transits of the hot Jupiter WASP-74b, using three medium-class telescopes and employing the telescope-defocussing technique. Most of the transits were monitored through I filters and one was simultaneously observed in five optical (U, g', r', i', z') and three near infrared (J, H, K) passbands, for a total of 18 light curves. We also obtained new high-resolution spectra of the host star. We used these new data to review the orbital and physical properties of the WASP-74 planetary system. We were able to better constrain the main system characteristics, measuring smaller radius and mass for both the hot Jupiter and its host star than previously reported in the literature. Joining our optical data with those taken with the HST in the near infrared, we built up an observational transmission spectrum of the planet, which suggests the presence of strong optical absorbers, as TiO and VO gases, in its atmosphere., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Context. We present the first high-cadence multi-wavelength radial-velocity observations of the Sun-as-a-star, carried out during 57 consecutive days using the stellar \'echelle spectrograph at the Hertzsprung SONG Telescope operating at the Teide Observatory. Aims. The aim was to produce a high-quality data set and reference values for the global helioseismic parameters {\nu_{max}}, and {\Delta \nu} of the solar p-modes using the SONG instrument. The obtained data set or the inferred values should then be used when the scaling relations are applied to other stars showing solar-like oscillations which are observed with SONG or similar instruments. Methods. We used different approaches to analyse the power spectrum of the time series to determine {\nu_{max}}; simple Gaussian fitting and heavy smoothing of the power spectrum. {\Delta\nu} was determined using the method of autocorrelation of the power spectrum. The amplitude per radial mode was determined using the method described in Kjeldsen et al. (2008). Results. We found the following values for the solar oscillations using the SONG spectrograph: {\nu_{max}} = 3141 {\pm} 12 {\mu}Hz, {\Delta\nu} = 134.98 {\pm} 0.04 {\mu}Hz and an average amplitude of the strongest radial modes of 16.6 {\pm} 0.4 cm/s. SONG aims at setting up a network of small 1m telescopes around the globe to observe stars uninterrupted throughout days, weeks and even months. The Stellar Observations Network Group prototype telescope at the Teide Observatory has been operating in scientific mode since March 2014. The first year of observations has entirely been carried out using the high resolution echelle spectrograph. Several asteroseismic targets were selected for scientific and technical verification. A few bright subgiants and one red giant were chosen since the oscillations in these stars have large amplitudes and the periods long enough to easily be detected. These targets would also be used for evaluation of the instruments since long term observations of single targets would reveal potential problems. We present a description of "the Conductor", an automated software package which handles all observations at the first Stellar Observations Network Group (SONG) node telescope at the Teide Observatory on the island of Tenerife. The idea was to provide a complete description on the automated procedures for target selection and execution of observations and to demonstrate how the SONG robotic telescope is being operated. The Conductor is a software package developed in Python and running on a server in Aarhus which makes use of a large set of database tables through which it communicates with the SONG nodes. Based on a number of selection criteria the Conductor is able to identify the optimum target to be observed at any given moment taking into account local weather conditions and technical constraints. The Conductor has made it possible for the Hertzsprung SONG telescope to become a highly sophisticated and efficient robotic telescopic facility without human interaction. It can handle everything from Principal Investigators submitting their proposed targets with specific settings to the data being available for download after the observations has been carried out. At present, and thanks to the availability of the Conductor, the first node of the SONG project can be considered a world leading robotic telescope with respect to needed human interactions, efficiency and flexibility in observing strategy., Comment: 11 pages (incl. 4 pages Appendices), 7 figures

The Stellar Observation Network Group (SONG) is an initiative to build a worldwide network of 1m telescopes with highprecision radial-velocity spectrographs. Here we analyse the first radial-velocity time series of a red-giant star measured by the SONG telescope at Tenerife. The asteroseismic results demonstrate a major increase in the achievable precision of the parameters for redgiant stars obtainable from ground-based observations. Reliable tests of the validity of these results are needed, however, before the accuracy of the parameters can be trusted. We analyse the first SONG time series for the star 46 LMi, which has a precise parallax and an angular diameter measured from interferometry, and therefore a good determination of the stellar radius. We use asteroseismic scaling relations to obtain an accurate mass, and modelling to determine the age. A 55-day time series of high-resolution, high S/N spectra were obtained with the first SONG telescope. We derive the asteroseismic parameters by analysing the power spectrum. To give a best guess on the large separation of modes in the power spectrum, we have applied a new method which uses the scaling of Kepler red-giant stars to 46 LMi. Several methods have been applied: classical estimates, seismic methods using the observed time series, and model calculations to derive the fundamental parameters of 46 LMi. Parameters determined using the different methods are consistent within the uncertainties. We find the following values for the mass M (scaling), radius R (classical), age (modelling), and surface gravity (combining mass and radius): M = 1.09 +- 0.04Msun, R = 7.95 +- 0.11 Rsun, age t = 8.2 +- 1.9Gy, and log g = 2.674 +- 0.013., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

AIMS: We aim to evaluate the near-infrared colors of brown dwarfs as observed with four major infrared imaging space observatories: the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the Euclid mission, and the WFIRST telescope. METHODS: We used the SPLAT SPEX/ISPEX spectroscopic library to map out the colors of the M-, L-, and T-type dwarfs. We have identified which color-color combination is optimal for identifying broad type and which single color is optimal to then identify the subtype (e.g., T0-9). We evaluated each observatory separately as well as the narrow-field (HST and JWST) and wide-field (Euclid and WFIRST) combinations. RESULTS: The Euclid filters perform poorly typing brown dwarfs and WFIRST performs only marginally better, despite a wider selection of filters. WFIRST's W146 and F062 combined with Euclid's Y-band discriminates somewhat better between broad brown dwarf categories. However, subtyping with any combination of Euclid and WFIRST observations remains uncertain due to the lack of medium or narrow-band filters. We argue that a medium band added to the WFIRST filter selection would greatly improve its ability to preselect brown dwarfs its imaging surveys. CONCLUSIONS: The HST filters used in high-redshift searches are close to optimal to identify broad stellar type. However, the addition of F127M to the commonly used broad filter sets would allow for unambiguous subtyping. An improvement over HST is one of two broad and medium filter combinations on JWST: pairing F140M with either F150W or F162M discriminates very well between subtypes., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the first asteroseismic results obtained with the Hertzsprung SONG Telescope from an extensive high-precision radial-velocity observing campaign of the subgiant muHerculis. The data set was collected during 215 nights in 2014 and 2015. We detected a total of 49 oscillation modes with l values from 0 to 3, including some l = 1 mixed modes. Based on the rotational splitting observed in l = 1 modes, we determine a rotational period of 52 days and a stellar inclination angle of 63 degrees. The parameters obtained through modeling of the observed oscillation frequencies agree very well with independent observations and imply a stellar mass between 1.11 and 1.15M_sun and an age of 7.8+/-0.4 Gyr. Furthermore, the high-quality data allowed us to determine the acoustic depths of the He II ionization layer and the base of the convection zone., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures.
