Abstract

Viscoelastic stress relaxation is a basic characteristic of soft matter systems such as colloids, gels, and biological networks. Although the Maxwell model of linear viscoelasticity provides a classical description of stress relaxation, the Maxwell model is often not sufficient for capturing the complex relaxation dynamics of soft matter. In this Tutorial, we introduce and dis-cuss the physics of non-Maxwellian linear stress relaxation as observed in soft materials, the ascribed origins of this effect in different systems, and appropriate models that can be used to capture this relaxation behavior. We provide a basic toolkit that can assist the understanding and modeling of the mechanical relaxation of soft materials for diverse applications.

Abstract

Gels made of telechelic polymers connected by reversible crosslinkers are a versatile design platform for biocompatible viscoelastic materials. Their linear response to a step strain displays a fast, near-exponential relaxation when using low valence crosslinkers, while larger supramolecular crosslinkers bring about much slower dynamics involving a wide distribution of time scales whose physical origin is still debated. Here, we propose a model where the relaxation of polymer gels in the dilute regime originates from elementary events in which the bonds connecting two neighboring crosslinkers all disconnect. Larger crosslinkers allow for a greater average number of bonds connecting them, but also generate more heterogeneity. We characterize the resulting distribution of relaxation time scales analytically, and accurately reproduce stress relaxation measurements on metal-coordinated hydrogels with a variety of crosslinker sizes including ions, metal-organic cages, and nanoparticles. 9. Time-resolved rheometry of drying liquids and suspensions

Abstract

From paints to food products, solvent evaporation is ubiquitous and critically impacts product rheological properties. It affects Newtonian fluids by concentrating any non-volatile components and viscoelastic materials, which hardens up. In both of these cases, solvent evaporation leads to a change in the sample volume, which makes any rheological measurements particularly challenging with traditional shear geometries. Here we show that the rheological properties of a sample experiencing `slow' evaporation can be monitored in a time-resolved fashion by using a zero normal-force controlled protocol in a parallel-plate geometry. Solvent evaporation from the sample leads to a decrease of the normal force, which is compensated at all times by a decrease of the gap height between the plates. As a result, the sample maintains a constant contact area with the plates despite the significant decrease of its volume. We validate the method under both oscillatory and continuous shear by accurately monitoring the viscosity of water-glycerol mixtures experiencing evaporation and a relative volume decrease as large as 70%. Moreover, we apply this protocol to dehydrating suspensions. Specifically, we monitor a dispersion of charged silica nanoparticles undergoing a glass transition induced by evaporation. While the decrease in gap height provides a direct estimate of the increasing particle volume fraction, oscillatory and continuous shear measurements allow us to monitor the suspension's evolving viscoelastic properties in real-time. Overall, our study shows that a zero normal-force protocol provides a simple approach to bulk and time-resolved rheological characterization for systems experiencing slow volume variations., Comment: 10 pages, 6+4 figures

15. From Self-Evident Norms to Contingent Couplings: A Systems-Theoretical Analysis of Changes in the Relationship between Schools and the Function Systems in Denmark

Abstract

Taking a point of departure in the paradoxical fact that the increase in educational knowledge leads to an increase in uncertainty for educational organisations, this article explores how uncertainty and contingency have increasingly become an integral part of school governance. The article draws on Niklas Luhmann's theory of 'World Society' as a functional differentiated society providing a range of different symbolic media for educational organisations. To trace the increase in the complexity of governing, we provide a historical account of the shifting couplings between schools and function systems. We show how the school becomes linked to an increasing number of symbolic media so that education becomes only one out of many other concerns. The article studies the consequences these shifting couplings have for how schools are governed and how they are expected to self-manage their relationship to different function systems. The article adds to existing studies of how education has become more and more differentiated with the argument that this has also led to new forms of couplings between schools and the education system with a number of important implications for the teaching profession.

Abstract

Magnetic structures are investigated by means of neutron diffraction to shine a light on the intricate details that are believed to be key to understanding the magnetoelectric effect in LiCoPO$_4$ . At zero field, a spontaneous spin canting of $\varphi = 7(1)^{\circ}$ is found. The spins tilt away from the easy $b$-axis toward $c$. Symmetry considerations lead to the magnetic point group $m'_z$, which is consistent with the previously observed magnetoelectric tensor form and weak ferromagnetic moment along $b$. For magnetic fields applied along $a$, the induced ferromagnetic moment couples via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to yield an additional field-induced spin canting. An upper limit to the size of the interaction is estimated from the canting angle.

Abstract

Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs) are a popular chemogenetic technology for manipulation of neuronal activity in uninstrumented awake animals with potential for human applications as well. The prototypical DREADD agonist clozapine N-oxide (CNO) lacks brain entry and converts to clozapine, making it difficult to apply in basic and translational applications. Here we report the development of two novel DREADD agonists, JHU37152 and JHU37160, and the first dedicated 18F positron emission tomography (PET) DREADD radiotracer, [18F]JHU37107. We show that JHU37152 and JHU37160 exhibit high in vivo DREADD potency. [18F]JHU37107 combined with PET allows for DREADD detection in locally-targeted neurons, and at their long-range projections, enabling noninvasive and longitudinal neuronal projection mapping.

Abstract

In education, the child is often observed as a potential to be shaped and realised. In this article, we analyse the educational program, First Lego League. Surprisingly, its aim is not simply to realise a potential, but to potentialise the child to become unlimited potential. Children should become 'a force for change', and they are told that 'you can be anything, just do it!'. To implement this program, First Lego League develops a transition medium that consists of non-representative, presentational symbols such as play, fun, innovation, dance and discovery. Such a program does not come without costs. Our analysis reveals how negativity is negated, knowledge is devalued and the children's selfnarratives are decoupled. This could result in children being confronted with paradoxical demands, which are difficult to navigate. Analytically, the article draws on Niklas Luhmann's systems theory and in particular his concepts of form and medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
