In order to understand the ecophysiology of sub-Sahelian tree species and to optimize their use in agroforestry, studies on tree root distribution are essential. The aim of this study was to investigate the root distribution of three sub-Sahelian tree species, Adansonia digitata, Faidherbia albida and Borassus akeassii, in three sites along a precipitation and soil gradient in Senegal. Root density maps observed on trench walls and soil-coring methods were used to characterize variations in root density of mature trees. Coarse and fine root distribution was strongly influenced by the site conditions, with root density being highest in the humid site for all tree species. B. akeassii had the highest root density compared to the other two species. Fine root biomass was concentrated in the 0–30 cm soil layer for A. digitata and from 30 to 60 cm for B. akeassii and F. albida. Laterally, the fine root biomass decreased substantially with increasing distance from the trees. Understanding the root distribution of sub-Sahelian tree species across climatic conditions could help to reduce competition between crops and perennials in agroforestry parklands.

Continuous pesticide usage has negative impacts on people and ecosystems associated with coffee farms. Alternative plant protection strategies can be implemented that are sustainable for both the environment and the coffee farmer. In this review, new genomic techniques (NGTs) such as RNAi (RNA interference, using spray-induced gene silencing – SIGS) are presented as a possible novel strategy to manage Coffea arabica pests and diseases. Exploitation of the coffee agroforestry system (AFS) is presented as another strategy, offering both plant protection and ecosystem restoration functions. Interactions within a coffee-AFS were found to both hinder and bolster the development of some coffee pests and diseases. Biological control represents a third strategy that has been examined to-date to combat important coffee pests and diseases (i.e., American leaf spot, black coffee twig borer, coffee berry borer, coffee berry disease, coffee leaf miner, coffee leaf rust, coffee wilt disease and green coffee scale). The astute use of RNAi, AFS and/or biological control have the potential to provide alternatives to conventional pesticides for future sustainable coffee production. However, these approaches must be compatible with the coffee farmers' local needs and accessibility and bolstered through nationwide support by advisory services and coffee authorities.

The coffee research community has maintained a long ongoing debate regarding the implications of shade trees in coffee production. Historically, there has been contrasting results and opinions on this matter, thus recommendations for the use of shade (namely in coffee agroforestry systems) are often deemed controversial, particularly due to potential yield declines and farmers’ income. This study is one of the first demonstrating how several Coffea arabica cultivars respond differently to shade with respect to yield. By standardising more than 200 coffee yield data from various in-field trials, we assembled the so-called “Ristretto” data pool, a one of a kind, open-source dataset, consolidating decades of coffee yield data under shaded systems. With this standardised dataset, our meta-analysis demonstrated significant genotypic heterogeneity in response to shade, showing neutral, inverted U-shaped and decreasing trends between yield and shade cover amongst 18 different cultivars. These findings encourage the examination of C. arabica at the cultivar level when assessing suitability for agroforestry systems. Comparison of productivity is also encouraged across a range of low to moderate shade levels (10–40%), in order to help elucidate potential unknown optimal shade levels for coffee production. publishersversion published

Epigenetic modification induced during embryogenesis can serve as a mechanism for rapid adaptation of plants to climate change, especially for long living organisms such as trees. Here, we test if temperature and osmotic stress during embryogenesis influences spring and autumn phenology, photosynthesis rate, growth and water stress tolerance in Abies nordmanniana. Somatic embryogenic plants (emblings) were developed under different temperatures to test if temperature influences the spring phenology. Our results show that 9 °C higher temperature during somatic embryogenesis advanced budburst by an average of 4 days, but with significant differences among different genotypes in their response. This reveals genetic variation in the observed phenological response to temperature during somatic embryogenesis. However, we did not observe an effect of differences in osmotic stress during somatic embryogenesis on the response of the emblings to water stress. Optimum temperatures for photosynthesis and maximal photosynthetic rates were not found to be influenced by the temperature during somatic embryogenesis. Both height and autumn senescence were significantly different among the genotypes, but the temperature during somatic embryogenesis did not affect these traits. The observed responses in our study complement findings from other species and support that epigenetic modification in phenology may help the species to cope with fluctuations in temperatures in future climate, and may have practical applications for reducing spring frost risk in plantations of the species.

This study assessed whether allometric scaling applied to pit sizes in stems of Douglas fir. Pit and pit aperture diameters were measured in xylem from stems of four plantation-grown Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees from each of two different sites in Denmark. One site had fertile soil, the other had poor soil fertility. Three different heights were accessed for each tree, and 40 pits were measured per height. Results showed that pit diameter varied between 17 and 24 μm and decreased significantly with increasing height above ground. Representing the position in the tree as a power function of distance from the top of the tree (L0.2) rather than the height above ground improved the model fit for pit diameter as expressed by the R2 value. However, the pit diameter relationship was found to be significantly affected by site, suggesting that anatomic dimensions relate not only to tree size but also to growth conditions. This would imply that even though pit size supposedly has a strong biophysical determination, some xylem plasticity may still be induced by environmental factors.

Precipitation that is intercepted by vegetation is generally considered as lost to the terrestrial hydrological cycle. However, if it is absorbed by the plants or reduces their transpiration, the intercepted water contributes positively to forest hydrology. The aim of this study was to investigate the absorption of intercepted water by a conifer and an angiosperm tree species. Pots of 2–3-year-old plants of × Cupressocyparis leylandii and Quercus robur were wrapped in plastic bags to exclude stemflow and throughfall from their water supply. Samples of both species were conditioned to two levels of aboveground wetting (sprinkled or un-sprinkled) and two levels of soil moisture (dry or moist). The periodical sprinkling with water droplets, lasting 5 h during two nights and 10 h in 1 day, ensured continuous aboveground wetting of plants during these periods. Weight changes of the plants were monitored after air drying in darkness for 3 h and wiping off any remaining surface water. Absorption of intercepted water was apparent for both species at night, when transpiration was close to zero. During the day, sprinkled plants of Q. robur had reduced rates of transpiration. For C. leylandii on dry soil sprinkling reduced water consumption during the first 24 h by 9%, while for Q. robur, the reductions were 46% and 27% for plants on dry and moist soils, respectively. These reductions in water consumption following sprinkling indicate that transpiration reduction and absorption of intercepted water deserve attention in studies of forest hydrology.

CONTEXT: Cocoa agroforestry systems differ in the diversity of shade tree species composition. Though cocoa benefits from shade, there is a lack of species-specific information on shade trees that enhance soil fertility and yield.OBJECTIVE: We examined how soil characteristics and cocoa yield were affected by eight commonly retained forest tree species, compared with unshaded control plots over a 3-year period.METHODS: Using 74 circular plots from 10 cocoa farms in the Western region of Ghana, we sampled soils from two random points within each plot. Soil nutrients at the beginning and end of the study were analyzed, and yield was expressed as number of harvested pods and dry weight of beans per hectare.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Levels of soil K and Ca were below recommended values. Although soil available phosphorus (P) was higher in control plots than under shade trees, yield around shade trees were higher than on unshaded plots. Cocoa yield differences between shade tree species and control plots were significant only in the major crop season, but not in the minor crop season. Cocoa yields under Cedrela odorata, Khaya ivorensis, Terminalia superba and Milicia excelsa were significantly higher than on control plots. Hence, the inclusion of specific shade tree species in cocoa agroforestry systems is important to maintain high yields in cocoa systems with low inputs.SIGNIFICANCE: To our knowledge, this study presents one of the first attempt to assess the impacts of specific shade tree species on soil characteristics and cocoa yield.

The susceptibility of cocoa to harsh climatic conditions is evident in cocoa growing areas in Ghana, and climate distribution models show reduced cocoa suitability to climate change. We assessed how cocoa health and productivity were affected by varying climate conditions for 4 years in 23 cocoa farms along a gradient of low rainfall/high temperature in the north to high rainfall/low temperature in the south of Ghana's cocoa belts. Twenty cocoa trees per farm (in total 460) were observed and scored for their canopy condition, flower intensity, and damaged pods due to mirids, cocoa shield bugs, and black pod disease (BPD). Harvested pods and extracted dried cocoa beans were evaluated to ascertain yield/productivity. Insect pest damages to pods were on average 2.3 ± 0.8, 2.2 ± 1.0, and 3.0 ± 0.7 pods tree−1 year−1 in the south, middle and north, respectively. The healthiest and highest yielding trees were in the rainy south at 0.99 ± 0.02 kg dry beans tree−1 followed by the middle (0.84 ± 0.02 kg) and the north (0.60 ± 0.01 kg). BPD infection was highest in the south at 1.1 ± 1.1 pods tree−1 year−1, followed by the middle (0.7 ± 0.8), and the north (0.4 ± 0.6). Within sites variability in rainfall and temperature was not found to affect yields significantly. The variability in cocoa performance and occurrence of pests and diseases observed within sites may thus be caused by farm management practices that are key to the enhancement of productivity at site level. We recommend regular pruning of cocoa and shade trees to increase aeration and prevent BPD in high rainfall areas, and an increase in shade tree components in dry regions for insect pest management in cocoa systems.

Shade is one of the recommended management solutions to mitigate the effects of heat stress, which is a major challenge for cocoa production globally. Nevertheless, there are limited studies to verify this hypothesis. Here, we evaluate the effects of heat and shade on cocoa physiology using experimental plots with six-month old potted seedlings in a randomized complete block design. Infrared heaters were applied for one month to increase leaf temperatures by an average of 5–7 ºC (heat treatment) compared with no heat (unheated treatments), and shaded plants were placed under a shade net removing 60% of the light compared with no shade (sun treatments). Plants under heat treatments in sun and in shade showed severe reduction in photosynthesis. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic light response curves indicated that heat caused damages at photosystem II and additionally resulted in lower rates of maximal photosynthesis. Temperature optima for photosynthesis were at 31–33 ºC with only small differences between treatments, and as light saturation was reached at low PAR levels of 325 – 380 µmol m−2 s−1 in shade and 427 – 521 µmol m−2 s−1 in sun, ambient rates of photosynthesis were comparable between sun and shade treatments. Heat treatments resulted in decreased concentrations of chlorophyll and changed pigment composition, reduced specific leaf areas, and plant biomass. While shade may benefit cocoa seedlings, our results indicate that the positive effects may not be sufficient to counteract the negative effects of increased temperatures on cocoa physiology.

Variation among provenances of Acacia senegal (Senegalia senegal (L.) Britton) in their survival and growth in height and diameter at two sites in Senegal could be partly explained by the climate at their site of origin and also revealed genotype-by-environment interactions. Breeding programs and forest restoration projects should carefully select germplasm for optimal performance of this socioeconomically important tree species. Several studies have shown important differences in adaptive properties among provenances (origins) of African savanna tree species, but there is a lack of studies on how these differences are expressed in different environments and age and to what extent they reflect local adaptation. This study investigates the survival and growth of trees from 15 African Acacia senegal (Senegalia senegal (L.) Britton) provenances tested in two environments and relates the differences among provenances to the climate at their site of origin and tree age. The study is based on 14 years growth in a common garden trial at two sites (Bambey and Dahra, Senegal) that differ in water availability, followed up by later assessment after 23 years at one of the sites. The variation among provenances in survival, height, and diameter was significant, and differences could be partly explained by the climate at their site of origin. In general, provenances from dry sites survived better at both sites. However, we observed genotype-by-environmental interactions where provenances from dry sites on average performed relatively poorer in height and diameter at the wettest site (Bambey) compared to the drier site (Dahra), while the opposite was the case for provenances from wetter sites. The results support that divergent selection creates and maintains local adaptation of Acacia senegal provenances in relation to growth (height and diameter) and survival in areas with different water availability. This has important implications for choice of appropriate planting material for tree planting and for conservation of genetic variation among natural populations, but also for prediction of the effects of climate change.

The restoration of the Southeast Asian tropical forests is a global priority but is limited by a lack of experience and knowledge regarding tree species performance in the various micro-habitat conditions that are prevalent after disturbance. Here we study the survival, growth, susceptibility to damage and capacity to resprout of 38 Sumatran lowland tropical tree species in a restoration planting trial in several typical post-disturbance microhabitats. 3200 seedlings were planted in four two-hectare blocks in February 2013 at the Hutan Harapan Ecosystem Restoration concession in Sumatra, Indonesia, and subsequently censused every six-months for two years to assess performance and changes in microhabitat conditions. By the end of the experiment overall survival was only 41%, with damage incurred by 55% of the surviving plants. Habitat conditions (light/shade, presence/absence of bamboo and shrubs) and their interactions affected survival in complex ways. Bamboo negatively affected survival whereas shrubs had a positive effect, except where bamboo was also present. Height growth rate increased when sites were light-exposed. Individual species performances also differed across habitats. Defining a minimum threshold of 50% survival as a measure of success in different habitat types, only two species (A. pavonina and N. wallichiana) could be characterized as generalists. Eighteen other species were characterized as specialists with good performance in one-three habitat types. Our findings suggest that enhanced restoration success could be achieved through better species-site matching.

Climate change is projected to have a major influence on forest tree populations and composition. Translocation of species outside their historic range has been suggested to maintain healthy forests and tree species. The introduction of exotic species into botanical gardens and arboretums worldwide demonstrates the ability of many trees to grow outside their natural habitat and may play an important part in avoiding climate driven extinction if grown in a matching climate. However, it remains to be determined which climatic factors are the most important predictors of climatic match. In this study we use information from the arboretum in Hørsholm, Denmark, to analyse differences in performance of translocated Oak (Quercus) and show how data from tree collections can be used to predict success of assisted migration. Our data included archive lists of georeferenced Northern hemisphere introductions of Quercus, and assessments of their survival and growth rates in nursery and the Hørsholm arboretum. Using logistic and linear regression we modelled the importance of different bioclimatic predictor variables for survival and growth rate. Several correlations were identified across the Quercus genus. Survival of Quercus species depended primarily on the temperatures at the origin, whereas growth on the other hand was more dependent on a match in precipitation. The negative correlations indicated that introductions were less successful from sites with higher temperatures and wetter conditions. The study demonstrates an approach to use historical data collected from arboreta and botanical gardens in climate change research. This new approach can provide useful information in relation to assisted migration for an array of poorly investigated species where this may be the only source of information.

Projecting trees species growth into future climate is subject to large uncertainties and it is of importance to quantify the different sources (e.g., site, climate model) to prioritize research efforts. This study quantifies and compares sites and climate model-induced uncertainties in projected Norway spruce growth from Denmark. We analyzed tree-rings from 340 Norway spruce trees sampled in 14 planted stands (1. Plantation, period 1950&ndash, 1987) and additionally 36 trees from six trials in a common garden experiment (2. Common garden, period 1972&ndash, 2012). Growth-climate correlations were estimated and multiple linear and nonlinear regression models relating growth with climate were tested. Tree growth was projected up to 2100 applying multiple linear or quadratic regression models based on the 15 Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs) of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). The climate-growth models showed that summer drought and warm previous-year late-summer and early-autumn constrain growth. In some stands, warm springs affected growth positively. The projections of growth under future climates on average showed from no to slightly negative changes in growth compared to present growth rates. However, projections showed a very large variation, ranging from highly positive to highly negative growth changes. The uncertainties due to variation in site responses and in climate models were substantial. A lesser degree of uncertainty was related to the emission scenarios. Even though our projections on average suggest that Norway spruce may experience a growth reduction in the future, the tremendous variation in growth predictions due to differences between stands and climate models calls for further research and caution when projections are interpreted. These results also suggest that forest managers in general should avoid the use of Norway spruce on exposed and drought prone sites and as an additional resilience measure primarily use it in mixtures with other more climate tolerant species.

Stem straightness, axis persistence, presence/absence of protuberant buds and epicormics, diameter and height have profound influence on timber quality and volume of teak ( Tectona grandis ). Provenance trials of teak were established in the 1970s in Ghana, as part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) International Series of Provenance Trials, with the view of selecting teak germplasm for sites with specific environmental conditions. Two field trials were located in dry semi-deciduous (dry) and moist semi-deciduous (moist) ecological zones of Ghana. They consisted of 13 provenances, including four landraces each from Ghana and Indonesia, and two and three provenances from India and Laos, respectively. Trees were assessed at 9, 17 and 28 years to (1) quantify the potential variation in quality and timber volume production, (2) examine possibilities for determining early selection of parameters of superior provenances and (3) select provenances for sites with particular environmental conditions. Production traits were higher on the moist site than the dry site. Mean height was 23.2 and 20.2 m tree −1 , stem cross-sectional area at breast height was 0.0896 and 0.0474 m 2 tree −1 , and stem volume was 0.75 and 0.34 m 3 tree −1 for the moist and dry sites, respectively. Nilambur provenance from moist India had the highest mean stem straightness score of 19% above average, whereas Savannakhet from Laos had the best protuberant bud score with 18% of the trees above average. Indonesian landraces performed better in the dry zone, whereas provenances from India and Laos performed better in the moist zone. Phenotypic correlations between age 9 and 28 years were moderate ( r = 0.54–0.90) to high ( r > 0.90) for production and qualitative characteristics, indicating feasibility of early assessment for identification of superior provenances. Nilambur and Savannakhet II provenances proved to be favourable choices for the moist zone, whereas the Temandsang provenance from Indonesia was found to be the best choice for the dry site. Assessing growth responses to climate variations from common garden experiments is vital to identify a species portfolio matching future climate. In the present study we make use of a 50 years old common garden experiment spanning six sites with different soil types across Denmark to (i) analyse climate-growth responses and resilience to drought and (ii) model future growth predictions for six non-native conifers and two native broadleaved tree species. Species-specific response-functions and Superposed Epoch Analysis of drought events are used to assess differences in sensitivity to drought. Recent studies have suggested that an association between size and speed of stomatal opening of stomata within taxa is likely to play a role in photosynthesis and transpiration. In this study we investigate whether this correlation applies for seedlings of 11 rainforest species from different taxa, and whether differences in stomatal and gas exchange parameters were related to initial growth under field and controlled conditions. The experiment was conducted on seedlings of nine late successional species and two early successional species, placed in full sunlight or 70% shade. We assessed density, size, length and width of guard cells, coupled with gas exchange parameters in the transition from darkness to light, recording minimum stomatal conductance during daytime darkness (gs-dark), operating maximum stomatal conductance (gs-op), speed of stomatal opening and the time to reach 50% conductance (T-50%). All stomata and gas exchange parameters were different between species. Shade significantly affected size and density, and all gas exchange parameters except gs-op were different between light situations. Stomatal size correlated negatively with speed of opening and positively with T-50%, confirming that smaller stomata open faster than large stomata. The two early successional species were very different in stomatal size and density, and in response to light. Anatomic parameters and physiological traits were not related to height growth, but gs-dark, gs-op and speed of stomatal opening were associated with biomass growth in a subselection of six late successional species.

Leaf morphology, total leaf nitrogen (N) content and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of Acacia senegal trees vary among ploidy levels and geographic origins. Leaf morphology was significantly correlated with carbon isotope composition (δ13C) among diploid trees, while a significant correlation was observed with nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N) among tetraploid trees. Leaf morphology and ploidy level can influence plants' ability to adapt to climatic conditions. Here we study Acacia senegal that has multiple ploidy levels and grows across a geographic range of mainly dry environments. We test if and how ploidy level and climate at the site of origin influence leaf shape and ratios of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of A. senegal. The study is based on leaves collected from 225 A. senegal trees representing 16 populations across the species range, grown in a common garden trial in Senegal. Leaf morphological parameters were measured, and ploidy level, total leaf nitrogen (N), carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) were determined. Three levels of ploidy were found, namely diploid, triploid and tetraploid, but at highly different frequencies among the 16 origins. Leaf morphology varied significantly among both geographic origins and ploidy levels, with especially triploid trees having distinct leaf shapes. Tetraploids displayed high δ13C and low δ15N values compared to diploids. For diploids, leaf length and number of leaflets were correlated with precipitation and latitude, respectively. Leaf morphology and isotopic discrimination in A. senegal vary according to ploidy level and geographic origin. Our analysis suggests that the differences likely reflect adaptation to different environments, but the patterns tend to differ between diploids and tetraploids.

Tree diversity in West Africa is threatened by intensified land uses and salinization, and farmers’ role in conservation of tree species is unclear. We hypothesized that farmers contribute to conservation of tree diversity through protection of trees in their agroforestry landscapes and compared the diversity and structure of the tree vegetation across landscape classes. Inventories were carried out in three villages in the Groundnut Basin in Senegal, assessing tree diversity, density and crown cover. Tree diversity as assessed by species accumulation curves was high in forests, but cultivated landscapes had comparable or almost comparable diversity, especially in the cases where the forest was planted or was affected by charcoal production. However, the occurrence of exotic species was higher in cultivated parts of the landscape, and although many species were in common, ordination plots indicated that forests and cultivated landscapes to some degree had different species composition. Salinity had a strong influence on vegetation, not only in the tans (salt marshes) but also across the other landscape classes. In conclusion, agroforestry landscapes in the three villages harbor considerable tree diversity, but insufficient to fully conserve the tree species. We argue that informing and including farmers in tree management in the region will contribute to overall conservation of tree genetic resources.

Despite Ghana’s large contribution to global cocoa production, average yields are low. Policymakers and practitioners are calling for implementation of a climate smart strategy by increasing yields and augmenting shade tree cover in cocoa systems. However, there have been few studies in West Africa on the relationship between shade and cocoa yield under field conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of shade tree cover and other factors on on-farm cocoa yields over a four-year period. The study was conducted on 86 farm plots of 8–28 years’ cocoa trees with varied canopy cover (CC) in Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana. A linear mixed model analysis showed that yields increased significantly with increased CC of shade trees, and indicated a doubling of yields when going from zero to approximately 30% crown cover. Fertilizer use gave a yield increase of 7%. Farms located in Western region had higher yields compared to Ashanti, and cocoa systems on short fallows had lower yields than farms cultivated on recent forest clearings and old fallows. Fungicide use, seed sources and land ownership had no significant effects on yield. We conclude that for a sustainable climate-smart cocoa agenda, promotion of shade trees is key.

Coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by the fungal pathogen Hemileia vastatrix, has plagued coffee production worldwide for over 150 years. Hemileia vastatrix produces urediniospores, teliospores, and the sexual basidiospores. Infection of coffee by basidiospores of H. vastatrix has never been reported and thus far, no alternate host, capable of supporting an aecial stage in the disease cycle, has been found. Due to this, some argue that an alternate host of H. vastatrix does not exist. Yet, to date, the plant pathology community has been puzzled by the ability of H. vastatrix to overcome resistance in coffee cultivars despite the apparent lack of sexual reproduction and an aecidial stage. The purpose of this study was to introduce a new method to search for the alternate host(s) of H. vastatrix. To do this, we present the novel hypothetical alternate host ranking (HAHR) method and an automated text mining (ATM) procedure, utilizing comprehensive biogeographical botanical data from the designated sites of interests (Ethiopia, Kenya and Sri Lanka) and plant pathology insights. With the HAHR/ATM methods, we produced prioritized lists of potential alternate hosts plant of coffee leaf rust. This is a first attempt to seek out an alternate plant host of a pathogenic fungus in this manner. The HAHR method showed the highest‐ranking probable alternate host as Psychotria mahonii, Rubus apetalus, and Rhamnus prinoides. The cross‐referenced results by the two methods suggest that plant genera of interest are Croton, Euphorbia, and Rubus. Improving the quality of people’s diets represents a major challenge for developing countries, particularly in Sahelian African countries. Foods from trees, shrubs, and palms are present in many meals and may improve dietary quality, especially for rural communities but, as their contributions have rarely been quantified, investigating the link between the intake of tree foods and the nutritional composition of diet is important. This study assesses the contribution of tree and palm foods to dietary intake in three rural communities in Senegal, using three household food consumption surveys to quantify the dietary intake of meals. The consumption of tree and palm foods in meals was frequent, mentioned by 93–99% of the families depending on the time of year. Several studies have documented that vegetation in the Sahel is highly dynamic and is affected by the prevailing climatic conditions, as well as by human use of the areas. However, little is known about vegetation dynamics in the large saline areas bordering the rivers of West Africa. Combining satellite imagery, the perception of local people and botanical information, this study investigated the vegetation dynamics and the drivers of vegetation changes in Fatick Province, Senegal. Satellite images showed a change in vegetation composition, i.e., a loss of tree cover and an increase in shrub cover, herbaceous cover and tans (highly saline areas with sparse vegetation). Although the trend was the same, the three villages had different vegetation histories. A survey of the woody vegetation showed that shrubs and young trees were dominating with relatively few large trees. Local people perceived a general decline of woody plants from 1993 to 2013. Among 60 species mentioned by local people, 90 % were declining and 10 % increasing. Together the three methods documented a decrease in density and diversity of the woody vegetation, mainly influenced by salinity and land use. The large numbers of young trees indicate a potential for regeneration of some, but not all, tree species. As many tree species appreciated by local people were reported to be declining, local communities have experienced a reduction of their natural resources. Based on villagers’ recommendations for improved vegetation management, we discuss possible contributions including reforestation, desalinization and environmental protection for restoration of the vegetation.

International audience; Plant water storage is fundamental to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems by participating in plant metabolism, nutrient and sugar transport, and maintenance of the integrity of the hydraulic system of the plant. However, a global view of the size and dynamics of the water pools stored in plant tissues is still lacking. Here, we report global patterns of seasonal variations in ecosystem-scale plant water storage and their relationship with leaf phenology, based on space-borne measurements of L-band vegetation optical depth. We find that seasonal variations in plant water storage are highly synchronous with leaf phenology for the boreal and temperate forests, but asynchronous for the tropical woodlands, where the seasonal development of plant water storage lags behind leaf area by up to 180 days. Contrasting patterns of the time lag between plant water storage and terrestrial groundwater storage are also evident in these ecosystems. A comparison of the water cycle components in seasonally dry tropical woodlands highlights the buffering effect of plant water storage on the seasonal dynamics of water supply and demand. Our results offer insights into ecosystem-scale plant water relations globally and provide a basis for an improved parameterization of eco-hydrological and Earth system models.

Water availability is often described as one of the main drivers of phenology of tropical dry forests but experimental studies to identify the cues triggering phenological changes are few. In a greenhouse trial, we exposed seedlings of thirteen origins, seven from West and six from East Africa, respectively, of Adansonia digitata L.(baobab) to a well‐watered control treatment and a water withholding treatment in combination with exposure to three different daylengths (11.5, 12.0, and 12.5 hr). Responses were measured in terms of meristematic activity, number of leaves, and height growth followed over 6.5 months. Multi‐level mixed‐effects statistical models were used to analyze how environmental and inter‐population variables affected phenological behavior. Flushing was influenced by the daylength with the lowest degree of meristematic activity observed in the short daylength treatment. Daylength also influenced the number of leaves through an interaction with the water regime. The water regime influenced all variables through interactions with the origins. Seedlings subjected to water stress had higher meristematic activity, but initially lower numbers of leaves than continuously watered plants. Height growth in continuously watered plants was fastest or at par with water‐stressed plants, depending on the origin. Origins from West Africa tended to have higher meristematic activity and their phenology was found to be less influenced by water withholding than East African origins. There were no signs of significant differences between origins in their response to photoperiod. In conclusion, baobab seedlings show opportunistic behavior, setting leaves when water is available, but larger activity is found when days are long. We discuss the results in terms of triggering factors for baobab phenology and adaptation to specific environmental conditions at the site of origins.

The morphological responses of seedlings of eight African provenances of Vitellaria paradoxa (Shea tree or Karite) to imposed draught stress were compared under nursery experimental conditions. The potted seedlings were subjected to three different watering regimes (87 days after sowing): no water stress (100% of the field capacity, C), moderate water stress (75% of C) and severe water stress (50% of C). Before the application of the stress, we observed genotypical differences in the morphological variables at the scale of leaves and of above-ground parts. The six-month water stress affected aerial growth: all provenances responded to drought by down-regulating growth (in height and in diameter), leaf number and area. Katawki provenance of Uganda performed relatively poorly, possibly of it being a nilotica subspecies, contrary to the others (paradoxa subspecies). There was a lack of correlation between climate of seeds origin, seed characteristics, seeds germination and survival rate of seedlings. The study confirmed the importance of leaf area in the vigor of the initial growth in this species. Thus, Tamale and Karaba provenances performed better than other West African provenances due to their larger leaf area, which was found to be a determining factor of relative growth in height at the seedling stage.

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts and heatwaves in Europe, leading to effects on forest growth and major forest dieback events due to hydraulic failure caused by xylem embolism. Inter-specific variability in embolism resistance has been studied in detail, but little is known about intra-specific variability, particularly in marginal populations. We evaluated 15 European beech populations, mostly from geographically marginal sites of the species distribution range, focusing particularly on populations from the dry southern margin. We found small, but significant differences in resistance to embolism between populations, with xylem pressures causing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity ranging from −2.84 to −3.55 MPa. Significant phenotypic clines of increasing embolism resistance with increasing temperature and aridity were observed: the southernmost beech populations growing in a warmer drier climate and with lower habitat suitability have higher resistance to embolism than those from Northern Europe growing more favourable conditions. Previous studies have shown that there is little or no difference in embolism resistance between core populations, but our findings show that marginal populations have developed ways of protecting their xylem based on either evolution or plasticity.

SUMMARYMost cocoa farms in Ghana are cultivated in complex agroforest systems, with plant growth and cocoa productivity being affected. The objective of this study was to investigate how shade trees affect cocoa yield, temperature and soil nutrients in low-input cocoa systems. Establishing plots on 24 farms in four locations (districts) in Ghana, we assessed the influence of varying canopy cover and fertilization on cocoa yields. Results showed no relationship between canopy cover and cocoa yields in the light crop season (February to August). For the main crop season (September to January), there was an interaction between shade and yields: Yields were higher on no-shade plots than on shaded plots in two districts, whilst there were no differences at the two other districts possibly due to differences in precipitation and soil nutrient status. On the other hand, there was a positive effect of increased canopy cover on yields within the shaded plots. Soil nutrient analyses revealed no significant differences between shaded and no-shade plots and adequate levels of N, K+, Fe2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were recorded. However, soil contents of P, C, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were below recommended values. Peak temperatures recorded in the cocoa canopies were above the recommended range for this species. Although shade trees had a slight modifying effect on peak temperatures, the magnitude appeared too small to have any practical effects.

The effects of drought stress on growth parameters and dry matter partitioning of seven provenances (six from West Africa and one from East Africa) of Adansonia digitata L. were assessed in a seedling experiment in Burkina Faso. Three water regimes corresponding to 100 % (control), 75 % and 50 % of field capacity were applied over a period of 18 months. While survival was unaffected by the stress treatments, provenances and water regimes significantly affected growth parameters, and plant dry matter accumulation was significantly reduced by water stress. Provenances had growth rates of diameter and height in response to stress. The fresh weight/dry weight ratio increased with increasing stress. In response to stress, shoot/root ratios decreased at the start of the experiment, but increased at the end, compared to the control. Differences between provenances were not correlated to environmental parameters of the site of origin, and the hypothesis about better resistance of seedlings from drier sites to drought stress was not confirmed. However, the provenance from East Africa was in several aspects different from the West African provenances.

A provenance trial of Vachellia nilotica ( Acacia nilotica ) was conducted in Niger in order to assess variability in growth among 10 provenances from Africa (subsp. adstringens from Niger, Senegal and Cameroun) and outside the continent (subsp. indica from Pakistan and Yemen). Tree height, diameter at breast height and crown diameter were measured 15 years after trial establishment. Comparison of blocks located at slightly different elevation showed that trees had better survival and growth at the lower sites. The African provenances had better survival and total basal area than provenances from Yemen and Pakistan. Within the African provenances, origins from Niger and Senegal were performing better than the provenance from Cameroun. There were indications that the performance could be correlated to precipitation at origin, but since the correlation was driven by the poor performance of subsp. indica provenances our data are not conclusive. Leafing phenology is an important component of climatic adaptation in semi-arid regions. The questions are to what extent phenology is under genetic control and represent adaptation to local climates? In the present study, we compare leaf phenology among Adansonia digitata L. trees of 27 different origins from West and East Africa and test if the differences follow climatic clines. Timing of bud burst was largely synchronized with the start of rainy season, but some few individual trees showed bud burst before the first rain. Timing of leaf senescence was under genetic control with substantial differences among origins. The timing of senescence was for some origins at the end of rainy season and for some in the beginning of the dry season. Differences among origins in timing of leaf senescence were related to the variation in drought just before- and in the first months of the rainy season at the sites of origin. Populations from drier sites had the earliest leaf shed at the common test site indicating that trees have been adapted to the prevailing climatic conditions at the sites of origin. This study presents an evaluation of an irrigated “market garden” trial established with 3-month-old seedlings of baobab. The trial included offspring from 59 open-pollinated family lots from ten provenances and four bulked provenance sample lots. Leaf productivity and seedling growth were evaluated monthly from the third month after establishment. We found lowered leaf productivity during the dry season despite the plants being irrigated. We provide the first estimates of heritability for leaf production and growth of the species. We assumed that the families of seed from open-pollinated single trees consist of true half-sibs but also provided adjusted estimates assuming a high level of selfing. Differences among provenances and families within provenances were highly significant (p < 0.01) with respect to leaf productivity. Heritability estimates (adjusted and non-adjusted) for leaf productivity were moderate to low, predicting moderate genetic gain from selection. Strong genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated between diameter and leaf production, indicating that simple selection for diameter can efficiently increase leaf production. The dry weight/fresh weight ratio was not significantly different among provenances or families within provenances. Based on the findings, we discuss how breeding can increase the total leaf production and its seasonal distribution.

This study documents the local use and management of trees in two communities in northern Ghana and compares this with development strategies. Information about tree use and management was obtained through interviews, participatory discussions, and questionnaire surveys (n = 40). The woody vegetation was surveyed through 32 plot samples. In addition, 13 representatives of organizations and institutions involved in tree management were interviewed. The results show that tree products are widely used in the communities, and specific uses of 73 tree species were recorded. On fallow land, an average of 2,416 trees/ha was recorded; on cropped land, an average of 56 trees/ha was recorded. Trees within cropped land are mostly regenerated naturally, and farmers demonstrated knowledge and interest in tree management. Polyploidy is a common phenomenon in the evolution of angiosperms. It has been suggested that polyploids manage harsh environments better than their diploid relatives but empirical data supporting this hypothesis are scarce, especially for trees. Using microsatellite markers and flow cytometry, we examine the frequency of polyploids and diploids in a progeny trial testing four different populations of Acacia senegal, a species native to sub-Saharan regions of Africa. We compare growth between cytotypes and test whether polyploid seedlings grow better than diploids. Our results show that polyploids coexist with diploids in highly variable proportions among populations in Senegal. Acacia senegal genotypes were predominantly diploid and tetraploid, but triploid, pentaploid, hexaploid and octaploid forms were also found. We find that polyploids show faster growth than diploids under our test conditions: in an 18 years old field trial, polyploid superiority was estimated to be 17% in trunk diameter and 9% in height while in a growth chamber experiment, polyploids grew 28 % taller, but only after being exposed to drought stress. The results suggest that polyploid A. senegal can have an adaptive advantage in some regions of Africa.

West African agroforestry systems are changing because agricultural intensification and a changing climate put the tree component at risk. Since local fruit trees play an important role in human nutrition and income generation, this is critical for rural livelihoods. This special issue presents a range of papers devoted to local fruit trees and their potential to improve local livelihoods. The topics cover studies of regeneration, use of mycorrhiza, tree/crop interactions, pollination, variation in fruit quality and genetic variation in adaptability. It is shown that there are many possibilities to improve benefits from trees. Some are likely to have immediate effect on livelihoods, such as cultivation of shade-tolerant crops under trees or improved management of pollinators. Others will require long term efforts, such as using natural variability of trees in breeding programmes to improve adaptation, quality and yield. In any case, to maintain the benefit from trees in the long run it will be necessary to identify appropriate strategies for regeneration of species that are currently in decline.

The effects of drought stress on growth and dry matter partitioning of seven provenances of Parkia biglobosa were assessed in a nursery experiment. Three different water regimes were applied: soil high, medium and low water content (HWC, MWC and LWC) corresponding respectively to 100, 75 and 50 % of field capacity. A split-plot experimental design was applied with the provenance as main plot and the water regime as sub-plot, replicated three times. Each provenance was represented by 30 seedlings in each replication, corresponding to three test periods with ten seedlings each (6, 12 and 18 months after water stress started). There were significant interactions between provenance and water regime for survival rate and the relative growth rates of diameter and height. After 18 months, the dry matter mean was 20.00 ± 0.65 g for the HWC regime, 11.50 ± 2.90 g for the MWC regime while all plants in the LWC regime died. After 6 months, the accumulated water use efficiency (WUE) showed significant differences between water regimes, but not between provenances. Seedlings from the LWC regime showed higher WUE than those from the MWC regime. However, the HWC regime displayed the highest mean value of WUE. Despite differences between provenances, it was not possible to clearly separate them according to the geographical position or climatic parameters, based on the growth performance or both fresh to dry weight and shoot to root dry weight ratios.

The baobab tree (Adansonia digitata L.) is of large socioeconomic importance. However, domesticated plant material of baobab is rarely available to African farmers, and very limited pre-breeding knowledge is available. To evaluate genetic differentiation between geographical origins we compared vigor and leaf morphology of trees from 17 West African and 13 East African provenances of baobab. Seedlings were grown and evaluated in a common garden test at Bamako, Mali. Germination was assessed and growth measured 3 and 12 months after germination. Leaf morphology (leaf length, leaflet number, petiole length and diameter and leaflet border) were assessed after 12 months. Significant differences between the provenances were observed for both growth rate and leaf morphology. West African provenances in general grew faster than East African provenances, but leaf characters did not reveal a particular geographic structure, and the correlations between geographic distances and multivariate Mahalanobis distances were not significant. The correlations between leaf morphological traits and climatic data were in general low at the provenance level. However, the number of leaflets was significantly higher for provenances from drier areas. Two years increment at a field site also varied significantly between the provenances, where West African provenances confirmed their tendency to higher growth rate. Still, trees are young and results regarding both growth data and leaf characteristics should be confirmed when the trees are closer to maturity.

Parkia biglobosa is a traditional economic tree legume of considerable multipurpose importance in the sudano-sahelian region in Africa. The species grows in multiple climatic zones with precipitation ranging from 600 to 2,500 mm a year and its natural distribution extends from Senegal and Guinea in West Africa to Uganda in Central Africa. In the present paper, a range wide sample of 25 provenances of P. biglobosa was tested in Burkina Faso, West Africa at two sites; Gonse (latitude 12°25′N; longitude 1°20′W; altitude 280 m) in the north-sudanian zone and at Dinderesso (latitude 11°18′N; longitude 4°35′W; altitude 425 m) in the south-sudanian zone. Based on analysis of survival and growth traits, we provide evidence of substantial genetic differentiation between P. biglobosa populations within West Africa. Height growth was best at Gonse, while the survival rate was higher at Dinderesso (61%) compared to Gonse (35%). Links between geographical parameters and the provenances performance were significant, and interesting geographic patterns were observed. Our results point towards superior fitness of the local Burkina Faso populations, and we speculate that presence of a continuum of locally adapted populations can be a part of the explanation for the species’ ability to thrive under quite different climatic conditions across West Africa. Based on the findings, we suggest recommendations for seed deployment and conservation strategies of the species in the West African Sahel. This is particularly important when considering the on-going climate change.
