3. Do cognitively stimulating activities affect the association between retirement timing and cognitive functioning in old age?

Abstract

In response to the rising financial pressure on old-age pension systems in industrialised economies, many European countries plan to increase the eligibility age for retirement pensions. We used data from Sweden to examine whether (and if so, how) retirement after age 65 - the eligibility age for basic pension - compared to retiring earlier affects older adults' (between ages 70 and 85) cognitive functioning. Using a propensity score matching (PSM) approach, we addressed the selection bias potentially introduced by non-random selection into either early or late retirement. We also examined average and heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs). HTEs were evaluated for different levels of cognitive stimulation from occupational activities before retirement and from leisure activities after retirement. We drew from a rich longitudinal data-set linking two nationally representative Swedish surveys with a register data-set and found that, on average, individuals who retire after age 65 do not have a higher level of cognitive functioning than those who retire earlier. Similarly, we did not observe HTEs from occupational activities. With respect to leisure activities, we found no systematic effects on cognitive functioning among those working beyond age 65. We conclude that, in general, retirement age does not seem to affect cognitive functioning in old age. Yet, the rising retirement age may put substantial pressure on individuals who suffer from poor health at the end of their occupational career, potentially exacerbating social- and health-related inequalities among older people.

10. HEART RATE VARIABILITY BIOFEEDBACK AFFECTS CARDIOVASCULAR PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY IN OLDER ADULTS

Low heart rate variability (HRV) has been associated with pathological aspects of aging. Studies looking to increase HRV in older adults have relied on physical activity. We used HRV biofeedback as a behavioral neurocardiac intervention to increase global HRV and vagal tone. Twenty older adults participated in six 30-minute sessions of HRV biofeedback over three weeks. Time-domain (Standard Deviation of Normal-to-Normal intervals (SDNN), Root Mean Square of Successive Differences (RMSSD)), frequency-domain (logarithmic transformed high frequency power (LnHF)), and a nonlinear component (sample entropy (SampEn)) of HRV were measured. Covariates included age, sex, psychiatric disorders, cardiac issues, and global cognition. Growth curve models with random and fixed effects were used. Cardiac issues contributed to greater SDNN (β = 42.84, p = .02), RMSSD (β = 57.11, p = .02), and LnHF (β = 1.17, p = .04) at baseline. Controlling for covariates, values for SDNN (β = 5.20, p = .003, pseudo-R2 = 21%), RMSSD (β = 6.75, p = .008, pseudo-R2 = 23%), and LnHF (β = 0.17, p = .02, pseudo-R2 = 24%) increased over the three weeks, and SampEn (β = 0.04, p = .02) decreased. Covariates explained 26% to 36% of the variability at baseline but no variability in interindividual change. This study provides support that HRV biofeedback may increase global HRV and vagal tone in older adults. Future studies with larger samples and a control group will be needed to delineate the effect of the intervention from intraindividual differences.

11. BIDIRECTIONAL ASSOCIATIONS OF SLEEP WITH COGNITIVE INTERFERENCE IN EMPLOYEES’ WORK DAYS

This study examined whether nightly sleep was associated with next-day cognitive interference, and vice versa, and whether the association was moderated by workday. A sample of 131 midlife employees (Mage=45.1, SDage=6.3) tracked their sleep and cognitive interference over 8 consecutive days. Multilevel models with lagged effects tested the within-person bidirectional associations of same-day and following-day cognitive interference with nightly sleep variables (bedtimes, wake times, sleep hours, sleep quality, and sleep latency). Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, between–person associations, and the previous-day sleep variable of interest. Employees reported more cognitive interference on days following earlier wake times, shorter sleep hours, or poorer sleep quality than usual. The opposite temporal direction, cognitive interference predicting nightly sleep, was also supported; more same day’s cognitive interference was associated with earlier bedtimes and earlier wake times than usual. The temporal associations of nightly sleep hours and sleep quality with the following day’s cognitive interference were significant on work days, but not on non-work days. Our results suggest bidirectional associations between poorer sleep and more cognitive interference, particularly on work days. These findings may have implications for workday productivity and interpersonal interactions impacted by cognitive interference.

24. Variation in symptoms of depression and anxiety in midlife women by menopausal status

Abstract

Objectives To examine the association between menopausal status and the risk of symptoms of depression and anxiety in a community-based sample of Australian midlife women. Study design Female participants (mean age 50.6 ± 1.5) who were premenopausal (n = 237), perimenopausal (n = 249) or naturally postmenopausal (n = 225) were drawn from the Personality and Total Health (PATH) Through Life Project, a longitudinal study. Main outcome measures Symptoms of depression and anxiety were measured using the Goldberg Depression Scale and Goldberg Anxiety Scale. Generalised linear regression models with a negative binomial log link were used. Results Relative to premenopause and after adjusting for all relevant covariates, being perimenopausal was associated with increased risk of greater symptoms of depression (incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 1.29, p = 0.001), while being postmenopausal was associated with increased risk of greater symptoms of anxiety (IRR = 1.15, p = 0.041). Being perimenopausal or postmenopausal was associated with an increased risk of greater symptoms of depression (IRR = 1.35, p = 0.008; IRR = 1.31, p = 0.029) and anxiety (IRR = 1.22, p = 0.030; IRR = 1.32, p = 0.006) in women without a history of probable major depressive disorder or generalised anxiety disorder. Risk of symptoms did not differ with menopausal status in women with this history. Conclusions Menopausal status is associated with the risk of symptoms of depression and anxiety. There is a greater likelihood of increased symptoms of depression during perimenopause and symptoms of anxiety during postmenopause. In women without a history of depression or anxiety, the perimenopause and postmenopausal stages are associated with increased risk of greater symptoms of anxiety and depression relative to premenopause.
