There are many reservoirs, ponds and Korotoa River in the capital of ancient Pundranagar, Bangladesh, which is an intensive agricultural region. Since different industries are operated for the preparation of different agricultural instruments and agrochemicals are extensively applied to the agricultural soils which mix with the river and pond water and these water bodies may be contaminated with trace elements. In this study, levels of nine trace elements (Cr, As, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, Fe, Mn and Pb) and physicochemical properties in surface water from one river and five ponds were measured and compared with water quality guidelines. In addition, health risks, pollution status and possible sources of trace elements were assessed. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in pond water were 0.059, 0.033, 0.067, 0.136, 0.133, 0.280, 0.733, 0.127 and 0.266 mg/L and river water were 0.055, 0.037, 0.054, 0.104, 0.120, 0.230, 0.702, 0.125 and 0.200 mg/L, respectively. Except Cu and Zn, the mean concentrations of trace elements were above the water quality permissible standards indicating water from these sources is not safe for human use. The WQI values suggested that the water quality is excellent to poor water quality class. Health risk indices indicated that As in water via ingestion exposure pathway may pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to the residents where the non-carcinogenic risk to the residents is raised from ingestion of As, Cd, Cr and Pb from water. The ancient city of Prusias Ad Hypium (Konuralp), located in the Bithynia region in ancient times, is located 8 km north of the city centre of Düzce today. Konuralp is a settlement where we observe the historical process with its ancient theatre, atlı kapı, aqueducts, Roman bridge, city walls and the ruins of the Ottoman period. In this study, with the data obtained from the project titled "Cultural Heritage of Düzce from Prusias Ad Hypium to Konuralp" carried out between 2017-2018, the reflections of the ancient city's past to the present, the role of the places belonging to the ancient history in the formation of social memory and collective memory, and their contribution to the formation of the cultural identity of the city in the construction process were examined. The method used in this article is oral history, which is frequently used in the field of History today, but not in the field of Antiquity. In the interviews with mostly local people over the age of 50, their memories, memories experienced in spatial areas, rituals, rumours, in short, what remains in their memories were recorded between the lines. With this study, it is aimed to record the narratives before they are lost and to take steps towards the protection of cultural heritage by creating historical awareness in the people of the region. An extensive magnetic survey has been carried out on a large part of the Roman and late antique city of Pollentia (Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain), combined with ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electric resistivity imaging (ER Imaging) to obtain data for a better understanding of the ancient city. For magnetic measurements, the 7‐probe fluxgate gradiometer array was used. The GPR data were collected by means of a system equipped with two dual‐frequency antenna boxes of 200 and 600 MHz, respectively. The geophysical data provide some new insights into the layout of the city, with the identification of numerous structures in areas that are still unexplored by archaeological investigation. The results fill the gap of previous partial geophysical surveys and show an interesting, unseen image of ancient Pollentia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spontaneous herbaceous plants (SHPs) play an essential role in urban biodiversity. Research on the diversity of SHPs has profound implications for the conservation of urban biodiversity and green space management in the process of urbanization. We investigated the habitat, life form, and growth form of SHPs by combining samples and inspections in Jingzhou, in central southern China. Additionally, we chose three typical regions—Ji'nan, Gucheng, and Shashi—for the examination and comparison of biodiversity. The results showed that diverse habitats provided abundant living space for SHPs of different growth forms and life forms in Jingzhou. Water edges with higher humidity do not significantly support more SHP growth forms and life forms, except for pseudo-rosette, partial-rosette, and perennial plants. In addition, both wasteland and road gaps and slopes support significantly more SHP growth forms, including erect, tussock, and others. Wasteland supported the vast majority of species, both growth forms and life forms. In the diverse habitats, there are 352 plant species belonging to 70 families and 236 genera in Jingzhou (Ji'nan 184 species, Gucheng 157 species, and Shashi 127 species). Plant species diversity differed according to the level of management. The Ji'nan region had a large number of SHP species because of the less disruptive and milder management implemented in this region. SHPs show good performance and can provide wild landscape effects; therefore, they have the potential to be used in many urban landscaping applications. In the process of urbanization expansion, we should implement the concept of protection and coordinated development in new construction areas. This essay offers a reading of early rabbinic laws of neighbors and reconstructs a distinctive political theory with a "partnership" concept at its heart. The thesis presented here begins with the idea that for the early rabbis, there is a form of partnership that arises spontaneously—i.e. with no need for agreement or contract—between people who live in close vicinity. In this way, individual neighbors become partners in spaces, objects, and structures situated between their private properties, and the people of the city become partners in all public matters and assets. Private-law reasoning serves the rabbis to theorize the life of the city as a whole. A major implication of this theory is that ultimate political authority lies in the hands of the people of the city, not in those of potential affluent or religious leaders. The people of the city rule the city because it is theirs in partnership. This civic theory, it is proposed, should be read in the intellectual context of Roman political thought. The rabbis are shown to exploit the gap between the views of Cicero and the Roman jurists about the city and to produce a political theory beneficial to provincial cities that would be recognizable to Roman intellectuals of their time. The people of the city, therefore, rule as equals among themselves and as autonomous vis-à-vis external imperial power. Ancient city is an important carrier of urban historical landscape development, with the development of urbanization, the protection and development of ancient city landscape has become a hot topic. Taking Taierzhuang ancient city in Shandong province and Quanzhou ancient city in Fujian province as investigated examples. This paper discusses the different characteristics and problems of the derivation landscape reproduction and "airborne" landscape reproduction. Exploring the influence range of early cities is significant for understanding the mechanisms behind ancient settlement systems and human-environment interactions. Due to a lack of effective research methods, the evolution processes and impact mechanisms of the influence ranges of prehistoric cities are still ambiguous. In this study, we chose the Songshan Mountain region for research, which witnessed the origin and development of Chinese civilization. Using GIS spatial analyses such as the 'average nearest neighbor' and 'Thiessen polygon', we explored the spatial-temporal distributions and influence ranges of Neolithic-Bronze Age cities in the region. The roles of human culture and the natural environment in the process were also investigated. The results indicated that the spatial distributions of early cities were random during the Yangshao (7000–5000 BP) and Longshan (5000–4000 BP) cultures. During the Erlitou culture (3800–3500 BP) and Shang Dynasty (3600–3046 BP), the spatial distributions changed into dispersed models. During the Zhou Dynasty (3046–2256 BP), the spatial distribution model was random again. Correspondingly, the influence range of early cities during the Erlitou culture is the largest, followed by those of the Longshan culture, Yangshao culture, Shang Dynasty, and Zhou Dynasty. This is different from the conventional view that the ancient city's influence range continuously expands as time advances. Both the natural environment and human culture are believed to impact this evolutional process. Specifically, the Holocene climate variation and the consequent cyclic river downcutting and silting affect the city site selection and thus the spatial-temporal distribution and influence range of early cities. The enfeoffment system occurring during the Erlitou culture should also have played a vital role in this evolution. In general, the natural environment is more important for the spatial distribution and influence range of early cities during Yangshao, Longshan, and Erlitou cultures, while human culture represented by the enfeoffment system plays a dominant role during Shang and Zhou Dynasties when the natural environment is relatively stable. The article provides a historical and pedagogical analysis of the images of Chiron, a centaur who devoted a significant part of his life to teaching. Among the extensive list of knowledge, skills and abilities that Chiron possessed and passed on to his numerous students, there are three areas related to education: 1) how to fight and take a life, 2) how to heal and return life – the art of healing, the reverse of the military, 3) special skills, such as how to play musical instruments or recognize constellations. We have compared the textual and visual (images on ceramics of the 6th-5th centuries BC) traditions that represent the student paths of Achilles and Asclepius, for whom medical knowledge was an important part of the curriculum. Achilles and Asclepius were students who came to Chiron as infants and for whom Chiron became a mentor-nurse. Asclepius was an excellent student who made significant progress in medicine, but Achilles, nevertheless, was the most gifted student of the centaur and, probably, the closest to him, not only in kinship, but also in spirit. A comparison of stories about how Chiron trained and educated Achilles and Asclepius allows us to see that in the ancient tradition Chiron is depicted as an urban centaur. Unlike other centaurs, his dual nature is subject to humanity: unlike his relatives, he is wise, not aggressive, heals people and arranges their affairs, develops unique curricula for students and educates them outside the city, but for the city. That is why Chiron as a mentor is always depicted with a kind face and outdoors; he is half dressed in a tunic and his front legs do not end with hooves, these are human legs. His school on Mount Pelion is distinguished by its originality: education and upbringing close to nature is designed to prepare a student for life in the city and activities for the benefit of the city.

With rapid urbanization, contradictions between rapid economic development and a lack of spiritual culture become increasingly complicated. Accessibility is a useful spatial quantitative index to evaluate the spiritual and cultural construction of the city. Amongst various accessibility methods, the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method is suitable for evaluating cultural urban land use (CULU) based on its advantage of flexibility and rationality. This study selects Xi'an as the representative ancient city. Based on comparing accessibility results between different travel modes (walk, bus, subway, and total), and analyzing through statistics, Z-score, and comparison of classification, comparison of a particular area, we obtain the characteristics of CULU accessibility in Xi'an. Firstly, for different travel modes, the distribution of CULU accessibility value in Xi'an is imbalanced, and the accessibility value of bus and subway is closely related to public transport resources. Secondly, CULU in Xi'an has apparent features of being dense in the center, sparse in the suburbs, and lack edge, which correspond to the development of the city. Finally, about 60% accessibility value is contributed by historical CULU, which reflects the typical characteristics of Xi'an as an ancient city with rich historical resources. This study profoundly analyses the attributes of CULU in Xi'an and provides essential data for decision-makers. Furthermore, it gives a significant exploration for building a CULU evaluation system in the future.

Safe levels of extractable heavy metals in land-uses urban soil have not been universally established. The pollution of land-uses soils in ancient Pundranagar, Bangladesh arouses growing interest because of severe anthropogenic stress, urbanization, ecotourism, overexploitation of natural resources, and discharges of industrial as well as municipal waste. Our study unfolds the extent of heavy metal pollution in the land-uses surface soil of this ancient terrestrial ecosystem and also investigates the contamination status, source, and ecological risks using pollution indices techniques. Total 90 soil samples were collected from six different land-uses and heavy metals were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The concentration ranges of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) in land-uses soils were 5.04–73.06, 18.26–313.2, 25.51–370.6, 4.83–36.30, 0.54–17.25, 8.60–187.9, 1128–8155, 35.04–129.1 and 8.60–187.9 mg/kg, respectively. Multivariate principal component analysis showed that Ni, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Zn in soil mainly from anthropogenic sources while As from lithogenic or natural sources. Considering the potential ecological risk, soil from all land uses showed moderate to high ecological risk. The present study aims to carry out 3D modeling works for the structures located in the Ancient City of Kilistra (Gökyurt), which exhibits features similar to Cappadocia and Ihlara in terms of its natural rock formation and architecture. The frequent use of photogrammetric techniques in works carried out towards the preservation, protection and documentation of hereditary artifacts, historical structures and geological formations with historical and cultural value is very advantageous in terms of the accuracy, cost and speed of the work carried out as well as numerical documentation and modeling. Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) techniques are among the significant methods in terms of the protection and documentation of historical and cultural heritage. Within the scope of the present study, interior space measurements of the Başpınar Cistern, Ceramic Workshop and Church of the Cross located in the Ancient City of Kilistra, an important settlement in historical terms, were performed using a terrestrial laser scanner while exterior space measurements were performed using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Additionally, 2D drawings unique to the artifacts were created and geometric information such as area, volume and circumference were extracted. The structure of the historical center of the city of Diyarbakır is largely inherited from the Roman city of Amida, through numerous testimonies still present in certain urban elements, such as buildings or cadastral parcels. The detailed analysis of the orientation of these urban elements in the current urban plan of Diyarbakır can contribute in particular to a better understanding of the different eras of foundation of the city of Amida and their spatial extensions. This research proposes to compare two methods of extraction of orientations from urban elements of the city of Diyarbakır . First, historians carried out a manual survey of the orientations from an aerial photograph, which made it possible to bring out two frames corresponding to two eras of the founding of the Roman city of Amida. These orientations were then compared with those extracted automatically from the geographic databases of cadastral parcels and built-up urban elements captured at a large scale. If the results obtained with the two methods converge, they also show differences, both on the orientation values and on the spatial extension of the two frames observed. These differences may contradict the initial observations, but are also sources of new perspectives of research on the spatial extension of the different periods of foundation of the Roman city of Amida. Finally, the results of this research tend to show that the two approaches prove to be complementary in detecting ancient urban structures in a contemporary city plan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well established that emissions from combustion of heavy fuels, light fuels and natural gas cause negative impacts on surrounding environment, including the erosion of antique buildings. This study investigates the effect of emissions from the Khoms Steam and Gas power station on the neighboring ancient city of Leptis Magna, using an air dispersion software (DISPER) to calculate the concentrations of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides in archaeological city under the influence of climate variables. The objective of this study is to calculate marble erosion rates caused by the chemical reactions on the surface of selected Marble structures. Hasankeyf is an ancient city, dating back to more than 10,000 years, in the Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkey. The area is separated by the Tigris River on both sides and located in the Batman province. However, as a result of a dam project, in February 2020, this ancient city and some of its surrounding villages were totally flooded. The residents were moved to new settlements. This study aimed to prevent the possible loss of ethnomedicinal knowledge of plants due to migration as well as to pass on this knowledge to the future generations. The field studies were conducted between March 2017 and November 2019 in the city center and 22 rural settlements of Hasankeyf. Also, the areas where intensive migration was experienced were visited frequently. Interviews were conducted with a total of 131 participants (76 women and 55 men) while gathering plants with them. Information was collected through interviews and questionnaires. The results were analyzed by quantitative indices of information consensus factor (FIC) and use value (UV). A total of 94 plant taxa belonging to 40 families were identified in the study area. The most common medicinal plant families are Lamiaceae (13), Asteraceae (8), Rosaceae (6), Malvaceae (6), Amaryllidaceae (5), Brassicaceae (4), and Solanaceae (4). The most common preparations were infusion, fresh application, and crushing. The taxa having the highest count of use value (UV) were Teucrium polium, Matricaria aurea, Urtica dioica, Mentha longifolia, and Quercus brantii. Besides, the recorded ailments were grouped into categories based on information provided by the interviewees. The most important use categories among the informants were diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory disorders, and dermatological disorders. The present study represents the first medical-ethnobotanical documentation and analysis of the traditional use of medicinal plants in Hasankeyf.

The new dossier of Revista Heródoto, titled “Cities And Peripheral Areas In The Ancient Word” considers the importance of understanding in parallel the ancient city and the contemporary city we live in. The dossier's contributions point out the co-dependency of these two cities and the need to reflect on their interpreters and their complex connections with the “world around”.

Geoarchives in ancient settlement sites and their environs bear valuable information about Holocene landscape evolution and human–environment interactions. During the last six millennia, sea‐level and coastline changes have had a significant impact on coastal settlements, some of which even had to be relocated. This paper reveals new insights into the spatio‐temporal development of the Lycian city of Limyra. Selected sediment cores were analyzed using a multiproxy approach, combining sedimentology, geochemistry, micropaleontology, and 14C dating. When the postglacial sea‐level rise decelerated, a coastal barrier and a deep lake, presumably a lagoon, evolved after the mid‐Holocene. The siltation history of the lake is complex: three coastal peat layers (mid‐4th millennium BC, end of 3rd/beginning of 2nd millennium BC, beginning of 1st millennium BC), indicate periods of semiterrestrial conditions. That they are sandwiched by lake sediments is consistent with new expansion phases of the lake, most likely triggered by coseismic subsidence. There is evidence of a former lakeshore, dated to between 1400 and 1100 BC, with an intentionally deposited layer of anthropogenic remains, now at 5.5 m below the surface. In the mid‐1st millennium BC, the lake silted up, river channels evolved, and people started to settle the area of the later city of Limyra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to compare the scenic images of four ancient Chinese cities including Lijiang, Pingyao, Huizhou and Langzhong, so as to provide specific development strategies for the ancient cities. In this paper, the ancient cities’ scenic images are divided into three sub-indexes and eight evaluation dimensions. Based on this, the study first uses Python software to collect tourists’ online comments on the four ancient cities. Then, the social network analysis method is used to build a high-frequency keywords matrix of tourist comments and the R language is used to generate a visual network graph. After this, the entropy weight method is used to determine the weights and values of eight evaluation dimensions. Finally, the tourists’ overall satisfaction indexes of the four ancient cities are calculated accordingly. The results show that (1) the overall satisfaction of Lijiang is the highest, while that of Huizhou is the lowest; (2) from the weight of each evaluation dimension, it can be seen that tourists care more about the national culture and historical culture; (3) from tourists’ satisfaction index on each evaluation dimension of the four ancient cities, we can find that the four ancient cities has their own advantages and disadvantages in tourism development. The article analyzes Mark Tullius Cicero's speeches, writings and letters of different years, in which he touches upon the issues of education through culture in the educational space of the ancient city. Expressing his opinion on the theatre, poetry and art (in the broad sense of the word, including the art of living and the art of speech), Cicero not only emphasized the educational power of culture, but also pointed to its educational weakness, which takes place if the functions of culture are reduced to mere entertainment. The elements reveal the identity of city must become main components of cultural and social interaction by becoming the way of life of the region and the people they belong to. Today, a similar urbanization is seen in tourism cities. The natural and cultural characteristics of the cities do not capture on the urban fabric. In this study, the contribution of Pamukkale-Hierapolis World Heritage Site (WHS) to Denizli urban identity was evaluated. In this context, Cinar Square, Bayramyeri Square and Kaleici (Oldtown) were examined. It was observed there were no structural or symbolic objects reflecting WHS in the evaluated regions. As stated in UNESCO declaration, all the old cities in the world are not only the property of that nation, but also the common property of all humanity; therefore, it is necessary to protect them. However, conservation can become widespread by transferring the natural, historical and cultural features of the city to urban generations by transferring them to future generations. The article presents the private houses of Ptolemais' inhabitants in the context of the history and urban development of a city with a thousand-year-long history. Four periods can be distinguished in the history of Ptolemais: the first since the creation of the city's final spatial development plan in the 2nd century BC until the Jewish Revolt in 115-117 AD; the second in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD under the sign of development and growing aspirations of Ptolemais; the third in the 4th century AD until the first half of the 5th century AD, when the city served as the capital of the province of Libya Superior; and the fourth, from the end of the 5th century AD until the mid-7th century AD, in which Ptolemais, after a short period of crisis related to the nomad invasions, flourished again until the appearance of the Arabs, marking the end of the ancient city, although not the end of settlement in its area. Within this historical framework, changes in the city's buildings and the transformation of private houses can be identified, and various cultural influences associated with the arrival of new residents at different times with their baggage of experience or with the more or less significant presence of representatives of the civil and military administration of the Roman Empire can be seen.
