The poster presents the definition of the mapping between the EpiDoc encoding schema and CIDOC CRM, the most relevant ontology in the field of Cultural Heritage, provided by the ItAnt project. The project "Languages and Cultures of Ancient Italy. Historical Linguistics and Digital Models" aims to investigate the languages of Ancient Italy by combining the traditional methods, proper to historical linguistics, with methods and technologies proper to the Digital Humanities. The languages of ancient Italy are documented almost exclusively in epigraphic texts and the creation of the first digital archive of their documentation according to the TEI/EpiDoc Guidelines is one of the main objectives of the project. In order to foster future interoperability and integration with other external datasets, a paramount concern of the project, we are mapping the EpiDoc schema to the CIDOC CRM ontology, in particular to its CRMtex extension, an ontological model developed to support the study of ancient documents by identifying relevant textual entities and by modelling the scientific process related to their investigation and features. CRMtex defines classes and properties for describing a handwritten text in all its aspects, from its creation in the past, down to its present conservation, investigation and study by scholars, including its transcription, translation, interpretation and publication. The full compatibility of CRMtex with the CIDOC CRM ontology and its extensions ensures persistent interoperability of data encoded by means of its entities with other semantic information produced in Cultural Heritage and Digital Humanities., The paper is partially supported by the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca, Italy [PRIN 2017XJLE8J]

The ItAnt project investigates the languages of ancient Italy, whose only attestations consist in epigraphic evidence, focusing on Venetic, Oscan, Faliscan and Celtic languages. For this purpose, the project combines the traditional method proper to historical linguistics with the setting up of digital technologies, developing computational tools specifically designed to create a digital set of interrelated resources. 1st Challenge: TEI/Epidoc Encoding Inscriptions are collected in a digital corpus managed in a digital archive containing the formal representation of the texts leveraging the TEI/EpiDoc encoding schema. It was necessary to extend the schema, in order to encode the peculiarities of these texts, such as odd writing ductus, and to describe the information in more detail, such as a division of information on language and script. The archive is enriched with standard metadata describing linguistics and material information. ItAnt is experimenting with Domain-Specific Languages to deploy a system that can assist scholars in the creation of the textual digital resources. 2nd Challenge: Describing the Lexicon ItAnt is developing a multilingual computational lexicon, providing a structured and formal representation of the lexical items and their related information as well as for allowing for a semantic access to the corpus. Traditional methods of lemmatisation do not lend themselves to fragmentary attested languages, in many cases the relation between words and lemmas being difficult for various reasons, such as different graphic standards, difficult linguistic analysis, incomplete paradigms, etc. Furthermore, sense representation is problematic, since meanings can often be reconstructed only partially and hypothetically. 3rd Challenge: Applying Ontological Model ItAnt is testing the use of CRMinf and CRMtex extensions of CIDOC CRM, the de facto standard ontology in the Digital Humanities for the representation of the texts and their scientific interpretation in a semantic format. This is the first experiment of complete treatment of the information concerning epigraphic material through this ontology. 4th Challenge: Integrating Data Finally, ItAnt will interlink among the different datasets, creating a hub that will primarily integrate lexicon and epigraphy transcriptions, together with contextual metadata, bibliography, and, experimentally, the hermeneutic positions. 5th Challenge: Preservation Tools and resources produced and developed within the project will be made available through relevant European-wide Research Infrastructures, such as CLARIN and DARIAH. Nel 1988 nel corso di scavi nel sito di San Clemente presso l'area dell'antica Nuceria Alfaterna, in Campania, furono rinvenuti due epitaffi giudaici. Grazie a questo ritrovamento, fu possibile documentare, per la prima volta con certezza, la presenza ebraica anche in quest'area relativamente interna della Campania antica nel periodo tardoantico. Within the archeology of living in Etruria, an important role has been played by the research on territorial organization of the inhabitants, that has generated increasingly detailed models: micro-districts, cantonal states or confederate systems (by Gennaro 1986, Pacciarelli 1991, Barbaro 2010, Cardarelli 2011). The present paper follows in the wake of these works in Southern Etruria during the Final Bronze Age. In fact, through the use of techniques of landscape archeology and land evaluation, we intend to reconstruct the agricultural dimension (and consequently the demographic one) of important settlements such as Luni sul Mignone, San Giovenale and Monte Rovello, as well as the whole territory of the Tolfa Mountains. On the other hand, as argued, among others, by Earle (2015), the study of the subsistence economy at the base of the pre-modern economy of ancient communities is the necessary starting point to understand them. Marxist theories, however, have shown that it is not simply a matter of identifying (and studying) a "particular economic configuration but also a composite set of life forms, a social, anthropological and ethical constellation" (Virno 2014). Through information from the excavations, from paleobotanical and archaeozoological analyses it is therefore intended to present an economic and social model of occupation of the territory of Tolfa Mountains during the Final Bronze Age. In other words, to test the economic and demographic sustainability of the organization, development and development systems in which, at the end of time, the so-called "protourban turn" will take place.P

In this work, we intend to provide a broad overview of Ancient Italian pantheons from the Republican age through the study of god names. Our study focuses on theonymic groups from the three main Italic langages, which possess to this day the largest epigraphical corpus, i.e. Oscan, Umbrian and Latin. On the Oscan side, the Tablet of Agnone bears testimony of a profoundly Hellenized background, but its structure also reveals typically Italic theological features as well as theonyms. Similar features can be found in the Roman world and other Oscan corpora, especially the sanctuary of Mefitis at Rossano di Vaglio, which is central in our study. One may notice, for example, the common association of agrarian divinities to military contexts, or the importance of feminine divinities, which elude trifunctional classification. Unlike the tablet of Agnone or the Pietrabbondante sanctuary, which bear more significant traces of Roman influence, the sanctuary of Rossano seems to present a more indigenous set of theonyms – although we have to keep in mind that the site also belongs to Hellenized territory, as confirmed/demonstrated by archeological research. On the Umbrian side, the Iguvine Tablets reveal a complex theology, and some features which are very similar to what we can find in Latin and Etruscan worlds – the latter showing significant Italic influence in its theonymy. Finally, comparisons with Latin corpora, such as the pocola deorum ceramics collection from Latium, and with Faliscan and Praenestine Latin, confirm the major part played by exchanges between Italic, Greek, and Etruscan theologies. This work also demonstrates how these exchanges rely on specific linguistic processes, viz. borrowings, morphosemantic calques, translations, syncretism and interpretations.; Le présent ouvrage entend proposer une vision d’ensemble des panthéons de l’Italie antique d’époque républicaine, à travers l’étude des ensembles théonymiques des trois principales langues italiques dont l’épigraphie nous a laissé de nombreuses attestations de date contemporaine : osque, ombrien, latin. Dans le domaine osque, l’inscription de la Table d’Agnone révèle selon nous une forte empreinte de l’hellénisme, mais son organisation met également en lumière des faits théologiques, et des théonymes, proprement italiques, que l’on retrouve par exemple dans le monde latin, et dans d’autres corpus osques : ainsi dans le sanctuaire de Rossano di Vaglio, nous observons de telles de convergences italiques, comme l’association du monde agraire au domaine militaire, ainsi que des figures de divinités féminines qui échappent aux grilles de classification trifonctionnelle. À la différence de la Table d’Agnone, ainsi que du sanctuaire de Pietrabbondante qui marque vraisemblablement une plus grande influence romaine, celui de Rossano présente des divinités qui semblent davantage indigènes ; pourtant la dimension hellénisée d’un tel sanctuaire ne doit pas non plus être mise à l’écart, elle est par ailleurs confirmée par l’archéologie. Dans le domaine ombrien, les Tables Eugubines et leurs nombreuses divinités révèlent une théologie complexe, qui montre de nombreux points de comparaison avec le monde latin, mais vraisemblablement également avec le monde étrusque, dont la théonymie est intrinsèquement liée, pour une partie du panthéon du moins, aux langues italiques. Enfin, la comparaison avec les corpus de divinités du monde latin, notamment la série des coupes en céramique des pocola deorum du Latium, mais également à Préneste et dans l’ager Faliscus, semble également confirmer le rôle majeur des échanges entre les théologies italique, grecque, étrusque. Nous montrons par ailleurs comment ces échanges s’appuient sur des processus linguistiques précis, à travers les emprunts, calques morphosémantiques, traductions, syncrétismes et interprétations.

In several Mediterranean regions archaeological sites have been mapped by fieldwalking surveys, producing large amounts of data. These legacy site-based survey data represent an important resource to study ancient settlement organization. Methodological procedures are necessary to cope with the limits of these data, and more importantly with the distortions on data patterns caused by biasing factors. This book develops and applies a GIS procedure to use legacy survey data in settlement pattern analysis. It consists of two parts. One part regards the assessment of biases that can affect the spatial patterns exhibited by survey data. The other part aims to shed light on the location preferences and settlement strategy of ancient communities underlying site patterns. In this book, a case-study shows how the method works in practice. As part of the research by the Landscapes of Early Roman Colonization project (NWO, Leiden University, KNIR) site-based datasets produced by survey projects in central-southern Italy are examined in a comparative framework to investigate settlement patterns in the early Roman colonial period (3rd century B.C.).
