Most classical discrete-time population models of interspecific competition have emerged as population-level phenomenological models with no evident basis at the individual level. This study shows that the Hassell-Comins model, a widely used discrete-time model of interspecific competition, can be derived in a bottom-up manner from a simple model of random resource competition between individuals of two species as an expression of expected population sizes in the next generation. The random competition leads to inequalities in resource allocation between individuals, which are related to the key parameters of the Hassell-Comins model that determine the density dependence of each species. The relationship between population-level parameters, such as intra- and interspecific competition coefficients, and individual-level parameters is discussed in detail, as is how the derived competition equations depend on the degree of inequality within each species. By considering limits of maximum or minimum resource inequality within each species, the derived model can describe interspecific competition for various combinations of two species exhibiting ideal scramble or ideal contest intraspecific competition., Competing Interests: I declare I have no competing interests., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Background and Objectives: In Japan, the prevalence of haptoglobin deficiency is approximately 1 in 4000. Haptoglobin-deficient individuals may produce anti-haptoglobin from allo-immunization, leading to serious transfusion reactions. Therefore, implementation of a consistent supply of haptoglobin-deficient fresh frozen plasma is crucial. We developed a novel reagent to facilitate large-scale identification of haptoglobin-deficient individuals as potential donors of plasma products., Materials and Methods: We established mouse monoclonal anti-haptoglobin-producing cell lines (three clones) using the hybridoma method by immunizing mice with the haptoglobin protein. Purified antibodies were conjugated with carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex beads and used for haptoglobin measurements by the latex agglutination method using an automatic analyser (LABOSPECT008). Samples with low protein concentrations were re-examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to confirm the results. Additionally, the haptoglobin gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction to confirm the haptoglobin deletion allele (Hp del )., Results: From February to October 2022, 7476 blood donor samples were screened. Two haptoglobin-deficient and 21 low-haptoglobin-expressing individuals were identified. Two haptoglobin-deficient donors were found homozygous for Hp del , and 19 (90%) of the 21 low-haptoglobin-expressing individuals were heterozygous for Hp del , which includes the first reported case of heterozygous Hp del /Hp Johnson ., Conclusion: We developed a new reagent for the detection of haptoglobin deficiency, which is automatable and inexpensive and appears useful for large-scale screening of blood donors., (© 2023 International Society of Blood Transfusion.)

The Hassell model has been widely used as a general discrete-time population dynamics model that describes both contest and scramble intraspecific competition through a tunable exponent. Since the two types of competition generally lead to different degrees of inequality in the resource distribution among individuals, the exponent is expected to be related to this inequality. However, among various first-principles derivations of this model, none is consistent with this expectation. This paper explores whether a Hassell model with an exponent related to inequality in resource allocation can be derived from first principles. Indeed, such a Hassell model can be derived by assuming random competition for resources among the individuals wherein each individual can obtain only a fixed amount of resources at a time. Changing the size of the resource unit alters the degree of inequality, and the exponent changes accordingly. As expected, the Beverton-Holt and Ricker models can be regarded as the highest and lowest inequality cases of the derived Hassell model, respectively. This paper explores the effects of increasing spatial subdivision of habitat on competition between two species. An increase in the degree of subdivision without any increase in the total amount of resources in the environment leads to smaller patch sizes, and thus, fewer individuals supported per patch. This fact suggests that when the degree of subdivision is high, the minimum resources that an individual must obtain before reproduction become important. Competition equations derived from first-principles that incorporate the minimum resource requirement are employed to investigate the effects of spatial subdivision and how these effects depend on the minimum requirements of the two species, type of resource competition such as scramble or contest, and spatial aggregation level of individuals. The results show that increased subdivision leads to changes in "effective fecundities" of the species, and consequently, affects their competitive superiority. Species coexistence is promoted at intermediate subdivision levels, especially if there is a trade-off between the minimum resource requirement and inherent fecundity. The range of subdivision in which coexistence occurs depends on the spatial aggregation of individuals and inequality in competitive ability between the species., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Bioengineered cardiac tissues represent a promising strategy for regenerative medicine. However, methods of vascularization and suitable cell sources for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have not yet been established. In this study, we developed methods for the induction of vascular endothelial cells from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells using three-dimensional (3D) suspension culture, and fabricated cardiac cell sheets with a pre-vascularized structure by co-culture of mouse ES cell-derived endothelial cells. After induction, isolated CD31+ cells expressed several endothelial cell marker genes and exhibited the ability to form vascular network structures similar to CD31+ cells from neonatal mouse heart. Co-culture of ES cell-derived CD31+ cells with ES cell-derived cardiomyocytes and dermal fibroblasts resulted in the formation of cardiac cell sheets with microvascular network formation. In contrast, microvascular network formation was reduced in co-cultures without cardiomyocytes, suggesting that cardiomyocytes within the cell sheet might enhance vascular endothelial cell sprouting. Polymerase chain reaction array analysis revealed that the expression levels of several angiogenesis-related genes, including fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1), were up-regulated in co-culture with cardiomyocytes compared with cultures without cardiomyocytes. The microvascular network in the cardiac sheets was attenuated by treatment with anti-FGF1 antibody. These results indicate that 3D suspension culture methods may be used to prepare functional vascular endothelial cells from mouse ES cells, and that cardiomyocyte-mediated paracrine effects might be important for fabricating pre-vascularized cardiac cell sheets.

In order to clarify the theoretical relationship between individual behavior and population-level competition between two species with spatial correlation, this paper describes how discrete-time competition equations for the two species can be derived from local resource competition among individuals. Competition type of each species is either scramble, contest, or modified contest, and for various combinations of two competition types, different competition models are derived. Simple competition models that can approximate the above models when competition is weak are also derived. Furthermore, the derived models are used to investigate how coexistence conditions and coexistence probability depend on spatial correlation and aggregation of individuals. For the weak competition models, spatial aggregation and non-correlation, in terms of measures adopted here, play exactly symmetric roles in promoting coexistence. In contrast, for the fully developed models, spatial aggregation generally exerts stronger effects than non-correlation on coexistence. Coexistence probability also depends greatly on competition types. For example, two species are generally more likely to coexist when they are of the same competition type than of different competition types. Coexistence probabilities from the mathematical analysis are in good agreement with those from individual-based simulations.

This paper demonstrates how discrete-time models describing population dynamics of two competing species can be derived in a bottom-up manner by considering competition for resources among individuals and the spatial distribution of individuals. The competition type of each species is assumed to be either scramble, contest, or an intermediate between them. Individuals of two species are distributed over resource sites or patches following one of three distribution functions. According to the combination of competition types of the two species and the distribution of individuals, various interspecific competition models are derived. Furthermore, a general interspecific competition model that includes various competition models as special cases is derived for each distribution of individuals. Finally, this paper examines dynamics of some of the derived competition models and shows that the likelihood of coexistence of the two species varies greatly, depending on the type of spatial distribution of individuals.

This paper provides first-principles derivations of population models for competition involving multiple resources with different competition types, based on resource partitioning between individuals. The following two cases are investigated. The first is the case in which the resource competed for and its competition type change depending on life stages from scramble to contest competition, or from contest to scramble competition. The second is the case in which individuals compete for two resources simultaneously with scramble and contest types, respectively. In both cases, population models are derived analytically, and in particular, the Hassell model is derived in the second case. The nature of reproduction curves and the stability properties of three population models derived are compared with each other. The purpose of this paper is to present a unified view to understand mechanistic basis of various discrete-time population models from the viewpoints of resource partitioning and spatial aggregation of individuals. A first-principles derivation is presented of a new population model which incorporates both scramble and contest competition using a site-based framework in which individuals are distributed over discrete resource sites. The derived model has parameters relating to the way of resource partitioning and the degree of spatial aggregation of individuals, respectively. The model becomes various population models in various limits in these parameters. This model thus provides a unified view to understand how various population models are interrelated. The dependence of the stability of the model on the parameters is also examined.

This paper presents a framework in which various single-species discrete-time population models exhibiting the Allee effect are derived from first principles. Here, the Allee effect means a reduction in individual fitness at low population sizes. The derivation is based on the distribution of female and male individuals among discrete resource sites, in addition to competitive and cooperative interaction among individuals. These derivations show how the derived population models depend on the type and the intensity of competition, and the degree of clustering of individuals. Along with these models exhibiting the Allee effect, this paper also presents first-principles derivation of population models without the Allee effect which include a parameter relating to the intensity of competition.

Background: Congenital haptoglobin deficiency is a risk factor for anaphylactic nonhemolytic transfusion reactions in Japan. The deleted allele of the haptoglobin gene, Hp(del), which causes congenital haptoglobin deficiency, has also been observed in other Northeast Asian populations, such as Korean and Chinese persons. It has not been reported in several African and European-African populations, however, or investigated in other countries., Study Design and Methods: To investigate the distribution of congenital haptoglobin deficiency in Southeast Asian countries, blood samples collected from 200 randomly selected healthy Thai volunteers were analyzed for serum haptoglobin and the haptoglobin gene. Plasma haptoglobin concentration was measured to identify haptoglobin deficiency. Haptoglobin phenotyping was performed with sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by Western blotting. The presence of the Hp(del) allele was determined with genomic DNA by an Hp(del)-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method., Results: There were no haptoglobin-deficient subjects detected among the 200 Thais. Their haptoglobin phenotypes were as follows: Hp 1-1 in 10, Hp 2-1 in 81, and Hp 2-2 in 109. Six individuals heterozygous for Hp(del) were detected. The frequency of the Hp(del) allele was calculated to be 0.015. The prevalence of haptoglobin deficiency caused by Hp(del) homozygosity was estimated to be approximately 1 in 4000., Conclusion: Congenital haptoglobin deficiency caused by Hp(del) homozygosity is presumed to be present in Thailand as a risk factor for anaphylactic transfusion reactions with a frequency similar to that in Japan. The causative deleted allele of the haptoglobin gene, Hp(del), is distributed among Southeast Asian populations as well as among Northeast Asian populations.

The preventive effect of Hydrolyzed Rice Bran against the common cold syndrome was examined in elderly people. Arabinoxylan derivatives of Hydrolyzed Rice Bran (HRB) were prepared from water-soluble rice bran through partial processing using a carbohydrate complex. Using the water-soluble Rice Bran (RB) as a control, a cross over double-blind study was conducted on both substances over a 6-week administration period. Fifty elderly people aged from 70 to 95 years participated in the study and the comparative data from 36 participants were analyzed. There were no withdrawals from in the study due to the side effects of the experimental foods. Symptoms were observed and scored. The total symptom score for the RB treatment group was three times higher than that for the HRB treatment group. The average duration of symptoms was 2.6 days for RB whereas it was only 1.2 days for HRB. Furthermore, some immunomodulatory action was observed in laboratory tests. HRB was shown to be useful in reducing the physical stress associated with acute respiratory tract infection.

The role of the pineal gland in inducing and maintaining the persistent estrus of rats exposed to continuous illumination was examined. Under the cyclic illumination, the pinealectomy or sham-operation revealed no effect on the estrous cycle, although weights of the ovaries, adrenals and hypophysis were slightly but definitely greater in the pinealectomized animals. In rats exposed to the continous illumination immediately after pinealectomy or sham-operation, both groups exhibited the persistent estrous states soon after the change of lighting condition. In these rats, neither the degree of persistent estrus nor the organ weights a autopsy showed any significant difference between the groups. Moreover, the pinealectomy could not alter the incidence of estrous in persistent estrous rats which had been established already by the continuous illumination.
