The binding energies of the Λ-Λ in14CΛΛand18OΛΛare estimated using the model of Dawson, Talmi and Walecka taking for the Λ-Λ interaction the potential derived by the author from6HeΛΛ. The modifications of the binding energies correcting errors due to the uncertainties in the potential derived from6HeΛΛare also discussed. Microprocessor based systems developed ‘in metallurgical lab’ are cheap and compatible with target metallurgical applications. In this paper two such systems will be presented and reviewed. One of the systems was developed for local data acquisition and process control applications, and the other for remote applications.

The scattering of pions from the three-nucleon systems H 3and He 3is studied taking into consideration the admixture of the S state of mixed symmetry. It is found that the differential cross-section is most sensitive to the percentage admixture of this state at around 90°.

Properties of type I diamond were investigated before and after irradiation with 17.0 and 18.3 MeV protons. The optical absorption edge is essentially unchanged. The infrared absorption spectrum shows a strong additional peak at 6.92 μm. A Raman line shift of 4 cm-1 indicates an increase of 0.0032 Å in the lattice constant.

The Energy crisis happens to be one of the greatest challenges we are facing today. In this view, much effort has been made in developing new, cost effective, environmentally friendly energy conversion and storage devices. The performance of such devices is fundamentally related to material properties. Hence, innovative materials engineering is important in solving the energy crisis problem. One such innovation in materials engineering is porous materials for energy storage. Porous electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) offer a high degree of electrolyte-electrode wettability, thus enhancing the electrochemical activity within the material. Among the porous materials, mesoporous materials draw special attention, owing to shorter diffusion lengths for Li+and electronic movement. Nanostructured mesoporous materials also offer better packing density compared to their nanostructured counterparts such as nanopowders, nanowires, nanotubes etc., thus opening a window for developing electrode materials with high volumetric energy densities. This would directly translate into a scenario of building batteries which are much lighter than today's commercial LIBs. In this article, the authors present a simple, soft template approach for preparing both cathode and anode materials with high packing density for LIBs. The impact of porosity on the electrochemical storage performance is highlighted.

HYPOGLYCÆMIC activity of sulphonylureas is now well recognized. In a search for more effective compounds we have synthesized a large number of compounds closely related to tolbutamide. More than 80 compounds have been screened for their hypoglycæmic activity in animals. Out of these, six compounds have shown significant hypoglycæmic activity. Two of these compounds, N-benzenesulphonyl-N′-iso-propylurea (R–94) and N-benzenesulphonyl-N′-n-butylurea (R–131), have been found to possess a high degree of hypoglycæmic activity. The comparative study of the hypoglycæmic activity of these two compounds have been carried out on rabbits, rats and guinea pigs bred at this Institute and maintained on a uniform diet. They were fasted for 18–20 hr. before the drugs were administered orally as a suspension in gum acacia. Blood sugar was estimated by Somogyi's method using Nelson's reagent1,2.
