We present the results of microscopic investigations of antiferromagnetic CeNiGe$_3$, using neutron powder diffraction (NPD), inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. CeNiGe$_3$ crystallizes in a centrosymmetric orthorhombic crystal structure (space group: $Cmmm$) and undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. The occurrence of long-range AFM ordering at $T_{\rm N} \approx 5.2$~K is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, and $\mu$SR measurements. The NPD data characterize the AFM state with an incommensurate helical magnetic structure having a propagation vector $k$ = (0, 0.41, 1/2). In addition, INS measurements at 10~K identified two crystal electric field (CEF) excitations at 9.17~meV and 18.42~meV. We analyzed the INS data using a CEF model for an orthorhombic environment of Ce$^{3+}$ ($J=5/2$) and determined the CEF parameters and ground state wavefunctions of CeNiGe$_3$. Moreover, zero-field $\mu$SR data for CeNiGe$_3$ at $T< T_{\rm N}$ show long-range AFM ordering with three distinct oscillation frequencies corresponding to three different internal fields at the muon sites. The spin-chain compound Sr3NiPtO6 is known to have a nonmagnetic ground state. We have investigated the nature of ground state of Sr3NiPtO6 using magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T)$, muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. The $\chi(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ do not exhibit any pronounced anomaly that can be associated with a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. Our $\mu$SR data confirm the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.04 K. Furthermore, the muon spin relaxation rate increases below 20 K and exhibits temperature independent behavior at low temperature, very similar to that observed in a quantum spin-liquid system. The INS data show a large excitation near 8~meV, and the analysis of the INS data reveals a singlet CEF ground state with a first excited CEF doublet state at $\Delta_{\rm CEF}$ = 7.7 meV. The estimated CEF parameters reveal a strong planar anisotropy in the calculated $\chi(T)$, consistent with the reported behavior of the $\chi(T)$ of single crystal Sr3NiPtO6. We propose that the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and a large $\Delta_{\rm CEF}$ (much larger than the exchange interaction $\mathcal{J}_{\rm ex}$) are responsible for the absence of long-range magnetic ordering and can mimic a classical spin-liquid behavior in this quasi-1D spin chain system Sr3NiPtO6. The classical spin-liquid ground state observed in Sr3NiPtO6 is due to the single-ion property, which is different from the quantum spin-liquid ground state observed in geometrically frustrated systems, where two-ion exchanges play an important role., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

While it is established that the pinch point scattering pattern in spin ice arises from an emergent coulomb phase associated with magnetic moment that is divergence-free, more complex Hamiltonians can introduce a divergence-full part. If these two parts remain decoupled, they give rise to the co-existence of distinct features. Here we show that the moment in ${\rm Nd_2Hf_2O_7}$ forms a static long-range ordered ground state, a flat, gapped pinch point excitation and dispersive excitations. These results confirm recent theories which predict that the dispersive modes, which arise from the divergence-full moment, host a pinch point pattern of their own, observed experimentally as `half-moons'., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $\mu$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2\Delta/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation asymmetry reveals the appearance of a spontaneous magnetic field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, indicating that time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken in the superconducting state. Although this behavior is commonly associated with non-unitary or mixed singlet-triplet pairing, our group-theoretical analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy alongside density functional theory calculations indicates that unconventional mechanisms are pretty unlikely. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TRS breaking may occur via a conventional electron-phonon process., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the magnetic and crystal electric field (CEF) states of the Kondo lattice system CeCuGa3 by muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A noncentrosymmetric BaNiSn3-type tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4mm) is inferred from x-ray as well as from neutron powder diffraction. The low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show an anomaly near 2.3 - 2.5~K associated with long range magnetic ordering, which is further confirmed by muSR and neutron diffraction data. The neutron powder diffraction collected at 1.7 K shows the presence of magnetic Bragg peaks indexed by an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = (0.148, 0.148, 0) and the magnetic structure is best described by a longitudinal spin density wave with ordered moments lying in ab-plane. An analysis of the INS data based on a CEF model reveals the presence of two magnetic excitations near 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV. The magnetic heat capacity data suggest an overall CEF splitting of 20.7 meV, however the excitation between 20 and 30 meV is very broad and weak in our INS data, but could provide an evidence of CEF level in this energy range in agreement with the magnetic entropy. Our analysis of INS data based on the CEF-phonon model indicates that the two excitations at 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV have their origin in CEF-phonon coupling (i.e. splitting of one CEF peak into two peaks, called vibron), with an overall splitting of 28.16 meV, similar to the case of CeCuAl3 and CeAuAl3., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

We present a comprehensive study of the low-energy band structure and Fermi surface (FS) topology of $A$Co$_2$As$_2$ ($A=$ Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental FS topology and band dispersion data are compared with theoretical full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations, which yielded reasonably good agreement. We demonstrate that the FS maps of $A$Co$_2$As$_2$ are significantly different from those of the parent compounds of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. Further, the FSs of CaCo$_2$As$_2$ do not show significant changes across its antiferromagnetic transition temperature. The band dispersions extracted in different momentum $(k_{\it x}, k_{\it y})$ directions show a small electron pocket at the center and a large electron pocket at the corner of the Brillouin zone (BZ). The absence of the hole FS in these compounds does not allow nesting between pockets at the Fermi energy ({\it E}$_{\rm F}$), which is in contrast to $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$-type parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors. Interestingly, we find that the hole bands are moved 300--400~meV below $E_{\rm F}$ depending on the $A$ element. Moreover, the existence of nearly flat bands in the vicinity of $E_{\rm F}$ are consistent with the large density of states at $E_{\rm F}$. These results are important to understand the physical properties as well as the possibility of the emergence of superconductivity in related materials., Comment: submitted

We report a systematic study of the $5d$-electron-doped system Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.15$). With increasing $x$, the orthorhombic $b$~axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in $a$ and $c$ leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system adopts a metallic ground state with an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level. The charge or transport gap collapses (at $x=$~0.04) faster than the spin gap with Ir substitution. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate that the system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic order below a N\'eel temperature, $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, of 3.1(2)~K for $x = 0.15$. The ordered moment is estimated to be smaller than 0.07(1)~$\mu_\mathrm{B}$/Ce although the trivalent state of Ce is confirmed by Ce L$_3$-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. It is suggested that the $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization gap, which plays an important role in the unusually high ordering temperatures observed in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$ = Ru and Os), may not be necessary for the onset of magnetic order with a low $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ seen here in Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The superconducting gap structure of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) candidate ZrRuAs ($T^{\rm on}_{\rm c}$ = 7.9(1) K) with a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements in transverse-field (TF) and zero-field (ZF) geometries. We also present the results of magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements on ZrRuAs, which reveal bulk superconductivity below 7.9~K. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth obtained from the analysis of the TF-$\mu$SR spectra below $T_{\rm c}$ is well described by an isotropic $s$-wave gap model as also inferred from an analysis of the heat capacity in the superconducting state. ZF $\mu$SR data do not show any significant change in the muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition temperature indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of this material., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We study the magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior of Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Al ($x=$ 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) Heusler alloys across the ferromagnetic (FM) transition (T$_{\rm C}$). The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction patterns exhibit single phase cubic structure for all the samples. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility $\chi$(T) data show a systematic enhancement in the Curie temperature and effective magnetic moment with Mn concentration, which is consistent with the Slater-Pauling behavior. The M(H) isotherms also exhibit the FM ordering and the analysis of $\chi$(T) data indicates the nature of the phase transition to be a second order, which is further supported by scaling of the entropy curves and Arrott plot. Interestingly, the Mn substitution causes an increase in the magnetic entropy change and hence large relative cooling power for multi-stage magnetic refrigerator applications. In order to understand the nature of the magnetic phase transition we examine the critical exponents $\beta$, $\gamma$, $\delta$ for the $x=$ 0.75 sample by the modified Arrott plot and the critical isotherm analysis, which is further confirmed by Kouvel-Fisher method and Widom scaling relation, respectively. The estimated values of $\beta=$ 0.507, $\gamma=$ 1.056, $\delta=$ 3.084 are found to be close to the mean field theoretical values. The renormalized isotherms (m vs h) corresponding to these exponent values collapse into two branches, above and below T$_{\rm C}$ that validates our analysis. Our results suggest for the existence of long-range FM interactions, which decays slower than power law as $J(r)\sim r^{-4.5}$ for a 3 dimensional mean field theory., Comment: originally submitted on 26/3/2019

We present thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the quantum spin ice candidate Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The parameterization of the anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian is refined based on high-energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering data together with thermodynamic data using linear spin wave theory and numerical linked cluster expansion. Magnetic phase diagrams are calculated using classical Monte Carlo simulations with fields along \mbox{[100]}, \mbox{[110]} and \mbox{[111]} crystallographic directions which agree qualitatively with the experiment. Large hysteresis and irreversibility for \mbox{[111]} is reproduced and the microscopic mechanism is revealed by mean field calculations to be the existence of metastable states and domain inversion. Our results shed light on the explanations of the recently observed dynamical kagome ice in Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in \mbox{[111]} fields., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. B

We report the optimized conditions for growing the high quality single crystals of candidate quantum spin-ice Pr2Hf2O7 using the optical floating-zone method. Large single crystals of Pr2Hf2O7 have been grown under different growth conditions using a four-mirror type optical floating-zone furnace and their microscopic structural differences have been probed by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD). The SXRD data reveal that the crystals grown under fowing argon (~ 2 L/h) atmosphere with slightly off-stoichiometric (optimized) starting composition yields the highest quality crystals. The magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization and heat capacity data of optimally grown crystals are presented., Comment: 7 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures

Superconductivity in the pseudo-binary pnictides Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As is probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements in conjuction with magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction confirmed the MnP-type orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma) and showed a nearly single phase nature with small impurity phase(s) of about 5% for both the samples. The occurence of bulk superconductivity is confirmed with Tc = 3.7 K for Ru0.55Rh0.45P and T = 1.6 K for Ru0.75Rh0.25As. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity data reveal weak-coupling single-band isotropic s-wave gap BCS superconductivity. Various normal and superconducting state parameters are determined which reveal a weak-coupling electron-phonon driven type-II dirty-limit superconductivity for both the compounds. The upper critical field shows a linear temperature dependence down to the lowest measured temperatures which is quite unusual for a single-band superconductor. The muSR data confirm the conventional type-II behavior, and show evidence for a single-band s-wave singlet pairing superconductivity with a preserved time reversal symmetry for both the compounds., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in PRB

Muon spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) is a vital technique for probing the superconducting gap structure, pairing symmetry and time reversal symmetry breaking, enabling an understanding of the mechanisms behind the unconventional superconductivity of cuprates and Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, which remain a puzzle. Very recently double layered Fe-based super-conductors having quasi-2D crystal structures and Cr-based superconductors with a quasi-1D structure have drawn considerable attention. Here we present a brief review of the characteristics of a few selected Fe- and Cr-based superconducting materials and highlight some of the major outstanding problems, with an emphasis on the superconducting pairing symmetries of these materials. We focus on muSR studies of the newly discovered superconductors ACa2Fe4As4F2(A = K, Rb, and Cs), ThFeAsN, and A2Cr3As3(A = K, Cs), which were used to determine the superconducting gap structures, the presence of spin fluctuations, and to search for time reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting states. We report the physical properties of Tb2Hf2O7 based on ac magnetic susceptibility \chi_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility \chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements combined with muon spin relaxation (\muSR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements. No evidence for long-range magnetic order is found down to 0.1 K. However, \chi_ac(T) data present a frequency-dependent broad peak (near 0.9 K at 16 Hz) indicating slow spin dynamics. The slow spin dynamics is further evidenced from the \muSR data (characterized by a stretched exponential behavior) which show persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.3 K. The neutron powder diffraction data collected at 0.1 K show a broad peak of magnetic origin (diffuse scattering) but no magnetic Bragg peaks. The analysis of the diffuse scattering data reveals a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in agreement with the negative Weiss temperature. The absence of long-range magnetic order and the presence of slow spin dynamics and persistent spin fluctuations together reflect a dynamical ground state in Tb2Hf2O7., Comment: 11 pages and 8 figures

Magnetic remanence - found in bar magnets or magnetic storage devices - is probably the oldest and most ubiquitous phenomenon underpinning technological applications of magnetism. It is a macroscopic non-equilibrium phenomenon: a remanent magnetisation appears when a magnetic field is applied to an initially unmagnetised ferromagnet, and then taken away. Here, we present an inverted magnetic hysteresis loop in the pyrochlore compound Nd$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$: the remanent magnetisation points in a direction opposite to the applied field. This phenomenon is exquisitely tunable as a function of the protocol in field and temperature, and it is reproducible as in a quasi-equilibrium setting. We account for this phenomenon in considerable detail in terms of the properties of non-equilibrium population of domain walls which exhibit a magnetic moment between domains of an ordered antiferromagnetic state which itself has zero net magnetisation. Properties and (non-equilibrium) dynamics of topological defects play an important role in modern spintronics, and our study adds an instance where a uniform field couples selectively to domain walls rather than the bulk., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures in main article and 7 pages, 13 figures in supplementary materials

The magnetic properties of a pressure induced noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrGe$_3$ have been investigated by muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), powder neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) techniques at ambient pressure. For completeness we have also measured the ac magnetic susceptibility $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$, dc magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, dc isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T,H)$ down to 2 K. CeIrGe$_{3}$ is known to exhibit pressure induced superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx 1.5$ K) at a pressure of 20 GPa and antiferromagnetic ordering at 8.7 K, 4.7 K and 0.7 K at ambient pressure. Our $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$ and $\chi(T)$ data show an additional anomaly near 6.2 K which is also captured in $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data. From $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$, $\chi(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ measurements we infer three antiferromagnetic transitions above 2 K at $T_{\rm N1}= 8.5$ K, $T_{\rm N2}= 6.0$ K and $T_{\rm N3}= 4.6$ K. Our $\mu$SR study also confirms the presence of three transitions through the observation of one frequency for $T_{\rm N2} < T\leq T_{\rm N1}$, two frequencies for $T_{\rm N3} < T\leq T_{\rm N2}$ and three frequencies for $T\leq T_{\rm N3}$ in the oscillatory asymmetry. The ND data reveal an incommensurate nature of the magnetic ordering at $T=7$ K with the propagation vector k = (0,0,0.688(3)), and a commensurate magnetic structure at $T=1.5$ K with the propagation vector locked to the value k = (0,0,2/3) and magnetic moments oriented along the $c$ axis. The commensurate structure couples a macroscopic ferromagnetic component, resulting in a strong dependence of the lock-in transition temperature on external magnetic field. The INS data show two well defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations arising from the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Ce$^{3+}$., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 1 table

The compound EuCo{2-y}As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is known to contain Eu{+2} ions with spin S = 7/2 that order below a temperature TN = 47 K into an antiferromagnetic (AFM) proper helical structure with the ordered moments aligned in the tetragonal ab plane, perpendicular to the helix axis along the c axis, with no contribution from the Co atoms. Here we carry out a detailed investigation of the properties of single crystals. Enhanced ordered and effective moments of the Eu spins are found in most of our crystals. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the enhanced moments arise from polarization of the d bands, as occurs in ferromagnetic Gd metal. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate metallic behavior. The low-field in-plane magnetic susceptibilities chi{ab}(T < TN) for several crystals are reported that are fitted well by unified molecular field theory (MFT), and the Eu-Eu exchange interactions Jij are extracted from the fits. High-field magnetization M data for magnetic fields H||ab reveal what appears to be a first-order spin-flop transition followed at higher field by a second-order metamagnetic transition of unknown origin, and then by another second-order transition to the paramagnetic (PM) state. For H||c, the magnetization shows only a second-order transition from the canted AFM to the PM state, as expected. The critical fields for the AFM to PM transition are in approximate agreement with the predictions of MFT. Heat capacity Cp measurements in zero and high H are reported. Phase diagrams for H||c and H||ab versus T are constructed from the high-field M(H,T) and Cp(H,T) measurements. The magnetic part Cmag(T, H = 0) of Cp(T, H = 0) is extracted and is fitted rather well below TN by MFT, although dynamic short-range AFM order is apparent in Cmag(T) up to about 70 K, where the molar entropy attains its high-T limit of R ln8., Comment: 29 pages, 30 figures including 62 subfigures, 8 tables, 84 references

Nd2Hf2O7, belonging to the family of geometrically frustrated cubic rare earth pyrochlore oxides, was recently identified to order antiferromagnetically below T_N = 0.55 K with an all-in/all-out arrangement of Nd3+ moments, however with a much reduced ordered state moment. Herein we investigate the spin dynamics and crystal field states of Nd2Hf2O7 using muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Our muSR study confirms the long range magnetic ordering and shows evidence for coexisting persistent dynamic spin fluctuations deep inside the ordered state down to 42 mK. The INS data show the crytal electric field (CEF) excitations due to the transitions both within the ground state multiplet and to the first excited state multiplet. The INS data are analyzed by a model based on CEF and crystal field states are determined. Strong Ising-type anisotropy is inferred from the ground state wavefunction. The CEF parameters indicate the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Nd3+ to be consistent with the dipolar-octupolar character., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 Table

The strange electronic state of a class of materials which violates the predictions of conventional Fermi-liquid theory of metals remains enigmatic. Proximity to a quantum critical point is a possible origin of this non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, which is usually accomplished by tuning the ground state with non-thermal control parameters such as chemical composition, magnetic field or pressure. We present the spin dynamics study of a stoichiometric NFL system CeRhBi, using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements. It shows evidence for an energy-temperature (E/T) scaling in the INS dynamic response and a time-field scaling of the muSR asymmetry function indicating a quantum critical behavior in this compound. The E/T scaling reveals a local character of quantum criticality consistent with the power-law divergence of the magnetic susceptibility, logarithmic divergence of the magnetic heat capacity and T-linear resistivity at low temperature. The NFL behavior and local criticality occur over a very wide dynamical range at zero field and ambient pressure without any tuning in this stoichiometric heavy fermion compound is striking, making CeRhBi an exemplary model system amenable to in-depth studies for quantum criticality., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the itinerant antiferromagnet (AFM) CaCo$_{\mathrm{2}-y}$As$_{2}$ at a temperature of 8 K reveal two orthogonal planes of scattering perpendicular to the Co square lattice in reciprocal space, demonstrating the presence of effective one-dimensional spin interactions. These results are shown to arise from near-perfect bond frustration within the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice with ferromagnetic $J_1$, and hence indicate that the extensive previous experimental and theoretical study of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on local-moment square spin lattices should be expanded to include itinerant spin systems.

The physical properties of an intermetallic compound CeRh2Ga2 have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility \chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), heat capacity C_p(T), electrical resistivity \rho(T), thermal conductivity \kappa(T) and thermopower S(T) measurements. CeRh2Ga2 is found to crystallize with CaBe2Ge2-type primitive tetragonal structure (space group P4/nmm). No evidence of long range magnetic order is seen down to 1.8 K. The \chi(T) data show paramagnetic behavior with an effective moment \mu_eff ~ 2.5 \mu_B/Ce indicating Ce^3+ valence state of Ce ions. The \rho(T) data exhibit Kondo lattice behavior with a metallic ground state. The low-T C_p(T) data yield an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient \gamma = 130(2) mJ/mol K^2 characterizing CeRh2Ga2 as a moderate heavy fermion system. The high-T C_p(T) and \rho(T) show an anomaly near 255 K, reflecting a phase transition. The \kappa(T) suggests phonon dominated thermal transport with considerably higher values of Lorenz number L(T) compared to the theoretical Sommerfeld value L_0., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in J. Magnetization, neutron diffraction, and high-energy x-ray diffraction results for Sn-flux grown single-crystal samples of Ca(Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)$_{y}$As$_{2}$, $0\leq x\leq1$, $1.86\leq y \leq 2$, are presented and reveal that A-type antiferromagnetic order, with ordered moments lying along the $c$ axis, persists for $x\lesssim0.12(1)$. The antiferromagnetic order is smoothly suppressed with increasing $x$, with both the ordered moment and N\'{e}el temperature linearly decreasing. Stripe-type antiferromagnetic order does not occur for $x\leq0.25$, nor does ferromagnetic order for $x$ up to at least $x=0.104$, and a smooth crossover from the collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phase of CaCo$_{1.86}$As$_{2}$ to the tetragonal (T) phase of CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ occurs. These results suggest that hole doping CaCo$_{1.86}$As$_{2}$ has a less dramatic effect on the magnetism and structure than steric effects due to substituting Sr for Ca., Comment: 12 pages, 16 Figures

Physical properties of a pyrohafnate compound Pr2Hf2O7 have been investigated by ac magnetic susceptibility \chi_ ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility \chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements on polycrystalline as well as single crystal samples combined with high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) for structural characterization and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to determine the crystal field energy level scheme and wave functions. Synchrotron XRD data confirm the ordered cubic pyrochlore (Fd-3m) structure without any noticeable site mixing or oxygen deficiency. No clear evidence of long range magnetic ordering is observed down to 90 mK, however the \chi_ac(T) evinces slow spin dynamics revealed by a frequency dependent broad peak associated with spin freezing. The INS data reveal the expected five well defined magnetic excitations due to crystal field splitting of the J = 4 ground state multiplet of the Pr^3+. The crystal field parameters and ground state wavefunction of Pr^3+ have been determined. The Ising anisotropic nature of magnetic ground state is inferred from the INS as well as \chi(T) and M(H) data. Together these properties make Pr2Hf2O7 a candidate compound for quantum spin-ice behavior., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to determine the crystal field states of the Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. Both the compounds crystallize in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space group Pm-3n) in which the Ce atoms occupy two distinct crystallographic sites with cubic (m-3) and tetragonal (-4m.2) point symmetries. The INS data of CeRuSn3 reveal the presence of a broad excitation centered around 6-8 meV which is accounted by a model based on crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. On the other hand, the INS data of isostructural CeRhSn3 reveal three CEF excitations around 7.0, 12.2 and 37.2 meV. The neutron intensity sum rule indicates that the Ce ions at both cubic and tetragonal Ce sites are in Ce3+ state in both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. The CEF level schemes for both the compounds are deduced. We estimate the Kondo temperature T_K = 3.1(2) K for CeRuSn3 from neutron quasielastic linewidth in excellent agreement with that determined from the scaling of magnetoresistance which gives T_K = 3.2(1) K. For CeRhSn3 the neutron quasielastic linewidth gives T_K = 4.6 K. For both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3, the ground state of Ce3+ turns out to be a quartet for the cubic site and a doublet for the tetragonal site., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, to appear in Phys. We report magnetic susceptibility \chi, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity C_p and electrical resistivity \rho measurements on undoped EuMn2As2 and K-doped Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 and Eu0.93K0.07Mn2As2 single crystals with the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H. EuMn2As2 has an insulating ground state with an activation energy of 52 meV and exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu+2 spins S=7/2 at T_N1 = 15 K from C_p(T) and \chi(T) data with a likely spin-reorientation transition at T_N2 = 5.0 K. The Mn+2 3d5 spins-5/2 exhibit AFM ordering at T_N = 142 K from all three types of measurements. The M(H) isotherm and \chi(T) data indicate that the Eu AFM structure is both noncollinear and noncoplanar. The AFM structure of the Mn spins is also unclear. A 4% substitution of K for Eu in Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 is sufficient to induce a metallic ground state. Evidence is found for a difference in the AFM structure of the Eu moments in the metallic crystals from that of undoped EuMn2As2 versus both T and H. For metallic Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 and Eu0.93K0.07Mn2As2, an anomalous S-shape T dependence of \rho related to the Mn magnetism is found. Upon cooling from 200 K, \rho exhibits a strong negative curvature, reaches maximum positive slope at the Mn T_N ~ 150 K, and then continues to decrease but more slowly below T_N. This suggests that dynamic short-range AFM order of the Mn spins above the Mn T_N strongly suppresses the resistivity, contrary to the conventional decrease of \rho that is only observed upon cooling below T_N of an antiferromagnet., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures, 4 Tables

The electronic and magnetic properties of the collapsed-tetragonal CaPd$_2$As$_2$ superconductor (SC) with a transition temperature of 1.27 K have been investigated by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_1$) and the Knight shifts indicate the absence of magnetic correlations in the normal state. In the SC state, 1/$T_1$ measured by $^{75}$As NQR shows a clear Hebel-Slichter (HS) peak just below $T_{\rm c}$ and decreases exponentially at lower $T$, confirming a conventional $s$-wave SC. In addition, the Volovik effect, also known as Doppler shift effect, has been clearly evidenced by the observation of the suppression of the HS peak with applied magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) \mu_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is much smaller than the estimated moment of 2.65 \mu_B/Nd for the local <111> Ising ground state of Nd3+ (J=9/2) suggesting that the ordering is partially suppressed by quantum fluctuations. The strong Ising anisotropy is further confirmed by the inelastic neutron scattering data which reveals a well-isolated dipolar-octupolar type Kramers doublet ground state. We have investigated the physical properties of a pyrochlore hafnate Nd2Hf2O7 using ac magnetic susceptibility \chi_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility \chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements, and determined the magnetic ground state by neutron powder diffraction study. An upturn is observed below 6 K in C_p(T)/T, however both C_p(T) and \chi(T) do not show any clear anomaly down to 2 K. The \chi_ac(T) shows a well pronounced anomaly indicating an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 0.55 K. The long range antiferromagnetic ordering is confirmed by neutron diffraction. The refinement of neutron diffraction pattern reveals an all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic structure, where for successive tetrahedra, the four Nd3+ magnetic moments point alternatively all-into or all-out-of the tetrahedron, with an ordering wavevector k = (0, 0, 0) and an ordered state magnetic moment of m = 0.62(1) \mu_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is strongly reduced reflecting strong quantum fluctuations in ordered state., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables; to appear in Phys. Rev. B

Physical properties of partially Ca substituted hole-doped Dy2Ti2O7 have been investigated by ac magnetic susceptibility \chi_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility \chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements on Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7. The spin-ice system Dy2Ti2O7 exhibits a spin-glass type freezing behavior near 16 K. Our frequency dependent \chi_ac(T) data of Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7 show that the spin-freezing behavior is significantly influenced by Ca substitution. The effect of partial nonmagnetic Ca2+ substitution for magnetic Dy3+ is similar to the previous study on nonmagnetic isovalent Y3+ substituted Dy2-xYxTi2O7 (for low levels of dilution), however the suppression of spin-freezing behavior is substantially stronger for Ca than Y. The Cole-Cole plot analysis reveals semicircular character and a single relaxation mode in Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7 as for Dy2Ti2O7. No noticeable change in the insulating behavior of Dy2Ti2O7 results from the holes produced by 10% Ca2+ substitution for Dy3+ ions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Single crystals of EuCu2As2 and EuCu2Sb2 were grown from CuAs and CuSb self-flux, respectively. The crystallographic, magnetic, thermal and electronic transport properties of the single crystals were investigated by room-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility \chi versus temperature T, isothermal magnetization M versus magnetic field H, specific heat Cp(T) and electrical resistivity \rho(T) measurements. EuCu2As2 crystallizes in the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm), whereas EuCu2Sb2 crystallizes in the related primitive tetragonal CaBe2Ge2-type structure (space group P4/nmm). The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and XRD data for the EuCu2Sb2 crystals showed the presence of vacancies on the Cu sites, yielding the actual composition EuCu1.82Sb2. The \rho(T) and Cp(T) data reveal metallic character for both EuCu2As2 and EuCu1.82Sb2. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is indicated from the \chi(T), Cp(T), and \rho(T) data for both EuCu2As2 (T_N = 17.5 K) and EuCu1.82Sb2 (T_N = 5.1 K). In EuCu1.82Sb2, the ordered-state \chi(T) and M(H) data suggest either a collinear A-type AFM ordering of Eu+2 spins S=7/2 or a planar noncollinear AFM structure, with the ordered moments oriented in the tetragonal ab plane in either case. This ordered-moment orientation for the A-type AFM is consistent with calculations with magnetic dipole interactions. The anisotropic \chi(T) and isothermal M(H) data for EuCu2As2, also containing Eu+2 spins S=7/2, strongly deviate from the predictions of molecular field theory for collinear AFM ordering and the AFM structure appears to be both noncollinear and noncoplanar., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures, 4 Tables

Results of muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements on a reentrant superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ are presented. Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c\,on} \approx 22.5$~K competing with long range ordered Eu$^{+2}$ moments below $\approx 18$ K. A reentrant behavior (manifested by nonzero resistivity in the temperature range 10--17.5 K) results from an exquisite competition between the superconductivity and magnetic order. The zero field $\mu$SR data confirm the long range magnetic ordering below $T_{\rm Eu} = 18.7(2)$ K. The transition temperature is found to increase with increasing magnetic field in longitudinal field $\mu$SR which along with the neutron diffraction results, suggests the transition to be ferromagnetic. The neutron diffraction data reveal a clear presence of magnetic Bragg peaks below $T_{\rm Eu}$ which could be indexed with propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0), confirming a long range magnetic ordering in agreement with $\mu$SR data. Our analysis of the magnetic structure reveals an ordered magnetic moment of $6.29(5)\,\mu_{\rm B}$ (at 1.8 K) on the Eu atoms and they form a ferromagnetic structure with moments aligned along the $c$-axis. No change in the magnetic structure is observed in the reentrant or superconducting phases and the magnetic structure remains same for 1.8 K $\leq T \leq T_{\rm Eu}$. No clear evidence of structural transition or Fe moment ordering was found., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B

The results of heat capacity C_p(T, H) and electrical resistivity \rho(T,H) measurements down to 0.35 K as well as muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) measurements on a noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3 are presented. Powder neutron diffraction confirmed the reported noncentrosymmetric body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure (space group I4\,mm) of LaIrSi3. The bulk superconductivity is observed below T_c = 0.72(1) K. The intrinsic \Delta C_e/\gamma_n T_c = 1.09(3) is significantly smaller than the BCS value of 1.43, and this reduction is accounted by the \alpha-model of BCS superconductivity. The analysis of the superconducting state C_e(T) data by the single-band \alpha-model indicates a moderately anisotropic order parameter with the s-wave gap \Delta(0)/k_B T_c = 1.54(2) which is lower than the BCS value of 1.764. Our estimates of various normal and superconducting state parameters indicate a weakly coupled electron-phonon driven type-I s-wave superconductivity in LaIrSi3. The \muSR results also confirm the conventional type-I superconductivity in LaIrSi3 with a preserved time reversal symmetry and hence a singlet pairing superconducting ground state., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrRuSi3 using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and muSR measurements. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data reveal the signatures of spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3 with a freezing temperature of 9.8 K. At low magnetic fields, we observe two sharp anomalies (at 4.9 and 8.6 K) in magnetic susceptibility data. In contrast, the specific heat data show only a broad Schottky-type anomaly centered around 10 K. However, muSR reveals very low frequency coherent oscillations at 1.8 K with an onset of fast relaxation below 12 K indicating a long range magnetically ordered ground state with very small moment. On the other hand, no magnetic Bragg peaks are observed in low temperature neutron diffraction data at 1.8 K. These two contradictory ground states, spin-glass versus magnetic order, can be explained if the spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3 is considered due to the dynamic fluctuations of the crystal field levels as has been proposed for spin-glass behavior in PrAu2Si2. Two sharp inelastic excitations near 2.4 meV and 14.7 meV are observed in the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra between 4 K and 50 K. Further, exchange coupling J_ex obtained from the analysis of INS data with CEF model provides evidence for the spontaneously induced magnetic order with a CEF-split singlet (Gamma_t4) ground state. However, the exchange coupling seems to be close to the critical value for the induced moment magnetism, therefore we tend to believe that the dynamic fluctuations between the ground state singlet and excited doublet CEF levels is responsible for spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3., Comment: 11 pages, 18 figures, 1 table

We report our comprehensive study of physical properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrIrSi3 investigated by dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), thermo-remnant magnetization M(t), ac magnetic susceptibility chi_ac(T), specific heat C_p(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A magnetic phase transition is marked by a sharp anomaly at T_tr = 12.2 K in chi(T) measured at low applied fields which is also reflected in the C_p(T) data through a weak anomaly at 12 K. An irreversibility between the zero field cooled and field cooled chi(T) data below 12.2 K and a very large relaxation time of M(t) indicates the presence of ferromagnetic correlation. The magnetic part of specific heat shows a broad Schottky-type anomaly near 40~K due to the crystal electric field (CEF) effect. An extremely small value of magnetic entropy below 12 K suggests a CEF-split singlet ground state which is confirmed from our analysis of INS data. The INS spectra show two prominent inelastic excitations at 8.5 meV and 18.5 meV that could be well accounted by a CEF model. The CEF splitting energy between the ground state singlet and the first excited doublet is found to be 92 K. Our muSR data reveal a possible magnetic ordering below 30 K which is much higher than that found from the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This could be due to the presence of short range correlations well above the long range magnetic ordering or due to the electronic changes induced by muons. The induced moment magnetism in the singlet ground state system PrIrSi3 with such a large splitting energy of 92 K is quite surprising., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

We report the synthesis, structure, and magnetic and transport properties of a new ternary intermetallic compound PrRhSn3 which crystallizes in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space group Pm-3n). At low applied fields the dc magnetic susceptibility exhibits a sharp anomaly below 6~K with an irreversible behavior in zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) susceptibility below 5.5 K. The ac susceptibility exhibits a frequency dependent anomaly revealing a spin-glass behavior with a freezing temperature, T_f = 4.3 K. The observation of spin-glass behavior is further supported by a very slow decay of thermo-remnant magnetization (mean relaxation time tau = 2149 s). However, a small jump at very low field in the isothermal magnetization at 2 K and a weak anomaly in the specific heat near 5.5 K reveal the presence of ferromagnetic clusters. The frequency dependence of the transition temperature T_f in the ac susceptibility obeys the Vogel-Fulcher law, nu = nu_0exp[-E_a/k_B(T_f-T_0)] with activation energy E_a/k_B = 19.1 K. This together with an intermediate value of the parameter delta T_f = Delta T_f/T_f Delta(log nu) = 0.086 provide an evidence for the formation of a cluster-glass state in PrRhSn3. The magnetic contribution of the specific heat reveals a broad Schottky-type anomaly centered around 10 K and the analysis based on the crystal electric field model indicates a singlet ground state. Further, below T_f the magnetic part of the specific heat exhibits a T^{3/2} temperature dependence. The strong influence of the crystal electric field and a T^{3/2} temperature dependence are also seen in the electrical resistivity which reveals a metallic character and a high magnetoresistance. We also obtain a surprisingly large value of Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio R_W ~ 247$., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

The crystallographic and physical properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of BaCo2As2 and K-doped Ba{1-x}K{x}Co2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.22) are investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization, heat capacity Cp, {75}As NMR and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T. The crystals were grown using both Sn flux and CoAs self-flux, where the Sn-grown crystals contain 1.6-2.0 mol% Sn. All samples crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm). For BaCo2As2, powder neutron diffraction data show that the c-axis lattice parameter exhibits anomalous negative thermal expansion from 10 to 300 K, whereas the a-axis lattice parameter and the unit cell volume show normal positive thermal expansion over this T range. No transitions in BaCo2As2 were found in this T range from any of the measurements. Below 40-50 K, we find rho ~ T^2 indicating a Fermi liquid ground state. A large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF) ~ 18 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions is found from low-T Cp(T) measurements, whereas the band structure calculations give D(EF) = 8.23 states/(eV f.u.). The {75}As NMR shift data versus T have the same T dependence as the chi(T) data, demonstrating that the derived chi(T) data are intrinsic. The observed {75}As nuclear spin dynamics are consistent with the presence of ferromagnetic and/or stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The crystals of Ba{0.78}K{0.22}Co2As2 were grown in Sn flux and show properties very similar to those of undoped BaCo2As2. On the other hand, the crystals from two batches of Ba{0.94}K{0.06}Co2As2 grown in CoAs self-flux show evidence of weak ferromagnetism at T < 10 K with small ordered moments at 1.8 K of 0.007 and 0.03 muB per formula unit, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 27 figures, 3 tables, 72 references

Polycrystalline samples of Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi (x= 0, 0.25, 0.50) are studied using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), heat capacity Cp, magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. This system crystallizes in the primitive orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (space group Pnma) as previously reported. The rho(T) data indicate metallic behavior. The Cp(T), chi(T), and rho(T) measurements consistently indicate long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transitions with AF ordering temperatures TN = 246, 215 and 188 K for x = 0, 0.025 and 0.50, respectively. A second transition is observed at somewhat lower T for each sample from the chi(T) and rho(T) measurements, which we speculate are due to spin reorientation transitions; these second transitions are completely suppressed in H = 5.5 T. The Cp data below 10 K for each composition indicate an enhanced Sommerfeld electronic heat capacity coefficient for the series in the range gamma = 24 to 29 mJ/mol K^2. The chi(T) measurements up to 1000 K were fitted by local-moment Curie-Weiss behaviors which indicate a low Mn spin S ~ 1. The chi data below TN are analyzed using the Weiss molecular field theory for a planar noncollinear helical AF structure with a composition-dependent pitch, following the previous neutron diffraction work of Venturini et al. [J. Alloys Compd. 256, 65 (1997)]. Within this model, the fits indicate a turn angle between Mn moments along the helix axis of ~100 degrees or ~145 degrees, either of which indicate dominant AF interactions between the Mn spins in the Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi series of compounds., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables

We present the superconducting and normal state properties of CaPd2Ge2 single crystal investigated by magnetic susceptibility \chi, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity C_p, in-plane electrical resistivity \rho and London penetration depth \lambda versus temperature T and magnetic field H measurements. Bulk superconductivity is inferred from the \rho(T) and C_p(T) data. The \rho(T) data exhibit metallic behavior and undergoes a superconducting transition with T_c onset = 1.98 K and zero resistivity state at T_c 0 = 1.67 K. The \chi(T) reveal the onset of superconductivity at 2.0 K. For T>2.0 K, the \chi(T) and M(H) are weakly anisotropic paramagnetic with \chi_ab > \chi_c. The C_p(T) confirm the bulk superconductivity below T_c = 1.69(3) K. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity is analyzed within the framework of a single-band \alpha-model of BCS superconductivity and various normal and superconducting state parameters are estimated. Within the \alpha-model, the C_p(T) data and the ab plane \lambda(T) data consistently indicate a moderately anisotropic s-wave gap with \Delta(0)/k_B T_c ~ 1.6, somewhat smaller than the BCS value of 1.764. The relationship of the heat capacity jump at T_c and the penetration depth measurement to the anisotropy in the s-wave gap is discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 Tables; Submitted to PRB

We report studies of CaCo{1.86}As2 single crystals. The electronic structure is probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of CaCo{1.86}As2 and by full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave calculations for the supercell Ca8Co15As16 (CaCo{1.88}As2). Our XRD crystal structure refinement is consistent with the previous combined refinement of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data showing a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86}As2 [D. G. Quirinale et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 174420 (2013)]. The anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data are consistent with the magnetic neutron diffraction data of Quirianale et al. that demonstrate the presence of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the easy axis being the tetragonal c axis. However, no clear evidence from the resistivity rho(T) and heat capacity Cp(T) data for a magnetic transition at TN is observed. A metallic ground state is demonstrated from band calculations and the rho(T), Cp(T) and ARPES data, and spin-polarized calculations indicate a competition between the A-type AFM and FM ground states. The Cp(T) data exhibit a large Sommerfield electronic coefficient reflecting a large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF), consistent with the band structure calculations which also indicate a large D(EF) arising from Co 3d bands. At 1.8 K the M(H) data for H|| c exhibit a well-defined first-order spin-flop transition at an applied field of 3.5 T. The small ordered moment of 0.3 muB/Co obtained from the M(H) data at low T, the large exchange enhancement of chi and the lack of a self-consistent interpretation of the chi(T) and M(H,T) data in terms of a local moment Heisenberg model together indicate that the magnetism of CaCo{1.86}As2 is itinerant., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables, 61 references; v2: extended the fits of experimental data by additional electronic structure calculations; published version

The noncentrosymmetric superconductors LaPdSi3 and LaPtSi3 have been studied with magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. These crystallize in the tetragonal BaNiSn3 structure and superconductivity is observed at Tc = 2.65 K for LaPdSi3 and Tc = 1.52(6) K for LaPtSi3. The results are consistent with both compounds being weakly coupled, fully gapped superconductors but muSR measurements reveal that LaPdSi3 is a bulk type-I superconductor while LaPtSi3 is a type-II material with a Ginzburg-Landau parameter of kappa = 2.49(4). This is further supported by specific heat measurements, where the transition in an applied field is first-order in LaPdSi3 but second-order in LaPtSi3. The electronic specific heat in the superconducting state was analyzed using an isotropic s-wave model that gave Delta/kTc = 1.757(4) for LaPdSi3 and 1.735(5) for LaPtSi3. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth of LaPtSi3 was extracted from muSR measurements and was fitted giving Delta/kTc = 1.60(8) and lambda(0) = 239(3) nm. A critical field of Bc(0) = 182.7 G was obtained for LaPdSi3 from muSR measurements, which is in good agreement with the calculated thermodynamic critical field.

The physical properties of self-flux grown EuPd2As2 single crystals have been investigated by magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystal structure was determined by powder x-ray diffraction measurements, which confirmed the ThCr2Si2-type body-centered tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm) reported previously. The rho(T) data indicate that state of EuPd2As2 is metallic. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is apparent from the chi(T), Cp(T), and rho(T) measurements. For H \parallel c the chi(T) indicates two transitions at TN1 = 11.0 K and TN2 = 5.5 K, whereas for H \perp c only one transition is observed at TN1 = 11.0 K. Between TN1 and TN2 the anisotropic chi(T) data suggest a planar noncollinear AFM structure, whereas at T < TN2 the chi(T) and M(H,T) data suggest a spin reorientation transition in which equal numbers of spins cant in opposite directions out of the ab plane. We estimate the critical field at 2 K at which all Eu moments become aligned with the field to be about 22 T. The magnetic entropy at 25 K estimated from the Cp(T) measurements is about $11\%$ smaller than expected, possibly due to an inaccuracy in the lattice heat capacity contribution. An upturn in rho at T < TN1 suggests superzone energy gap formation below TN1. Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements are presented for powders and single crystals of CaCo{1.86}As2. The crystal structure is a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure as previously reported, but with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86(2)}As2. The thermal expansion coefficients for both the a- and c-axes are positive from 10 to 300 K. The magnetic states of the non-centrosymmetric, pressure induced superconductor CeCoGe3 have been studied with magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(muSR), single crystal neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). CeCoGe3 exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at T_N1 = 21 K, T_N2 = 12 K and T_N3 = 8 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below T_N1 is revealed by the observation of oscillations of the asymmetry in the muSR spectra between 13 K and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. Single crystal neutron diffraction measurements reveal magnetic Bragg peaks consistent with propagation vectors of k = 2/3 between T_N1 and T_N2, k = 5/8between T_N2 and T_N3 and k = 1/2 below T_N3. An increase in intensity of the (1 1 0) reflection between T_N1 and T_N3 also indicates a ferromagnetic component in these phases. These measurements are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, two-down magnetic structure below T_N3, with a magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B/Ce. Above T_N2, the results are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, one-down structure with a moment of 0.360(6) mu_B/Ce. INS studies reveal two crystal-field (CEF) excitations at 19 and 27 meV. From an analysis with a CEF model, the wave-functions of the J = 5/2 multiplet are evaluated along with a prediction for the magnitude and direction of the ground state magnetic moment. Our model correctly predicts that the moments order along the c axis but the observed magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B is reduced compared to the predicted moment of 1.01 mu_B. This is ascribed to hybridization between the localized Ce^3+ f-electrons and the conduction band. This suggests that CeCoGe3 has a degree of hybridization between that of CeRhGe3 and the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CeRhSi3., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations to study the electronic structure of BaCo2As2. The Fermi surface (FS) maps and the corresponding band dispersion data (at 90 K and 200 K) reveal a small electron pocket at the center and a large electron pocket at the corner of the Brillouin zone. Therefore the nesting between electron and hole FS pockets is absent in this compound, in contrast to the parent compounds of FeAs-based high-T_c superconductors. The electronic structure at about 500 meV binding energy is very similar to features at the chemical potential in BaFe2As2. This indicates that complete substitution of Co for Fe causes a nearly rigid shift in the Fermi energy by adding two electrons per formula unit without significant changes in the band dispersions. The experimental FS topology as well as band dispersion data are in reasonable agreement with the FP-LAPW calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The synthesis and crystallography, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M, specific heat Cp, in-plane electrical resistivity rho and in-plane magnetic penetration depth measurements are reported for single crystals of APd2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystals were grown using PdAs self-flux. CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 crystallize in a collapsed body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (I4/mmm), whereas BaPd2As2 crystallizes in the primitive tetragonal CeMg2Si2-type structure (P4/mmm), in agreement with literature data. The rho(T) data exhibit metallic behavior for all three compounds. Bulk superconductivity is reported for CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 below Tc = 1.27 and 0.92 K, respectively, whereas only a trace of superconductivity is found in BaPd2As2. No other phase transitions were observed. The chi(T) and M(H) data reveal anisotropic diamagnetism in the normal state, with chi_c > chi_ab for CaPd2As2 and BaPd2As2, and chi_c < chi_ab for SrPd2As2. The normal and superconducting state data indicate that CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 are conventional type-II nodeless s-wave electron-phonon superconductors. The electronic superconducting-state heat capacity data for CaPd2As2, which has an extremely sharp heat capacity jump at Tc, are analyzed using our recent elaboration of the alpha-model of the BCS theory of superconductivity, which indicates that the s-wave gap in this compound is anisotropic in momentum space., Comment: 25 two-column typeset pages, 21 figures, 8 tables, 81 references; v2: minor changes, published version

The synthesis and crystallographic and physical properties of polycrystalline EuNiGe3 are reported. EuNiGe3 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure. The physical property data consistently demonstrate that this is a metallic system in which Eu spins S = 7/2 order antiferromagnetically at a temperature TN = 13.6 K. Magnetic susceptibility chi data for T > TN indicate that the Eu atoms have spin 7/2 with g = 2, that the Ni atoms are nonmagnetic, and that the dominant interactions between the Eu spins are ferromagnetic. Thus we propose that EuNiGe3 has a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic structure. A fit of chi(T < TN) by our molecular field theory is consistent with a collinear magnetic structure. Electrical resistivity rho data from TN to 350 K are fitted by the Bloch-Gruneisen model for electron-phonon scattering, yielding a Debye temperature of 265(2) K. A strong decrease in rho occurs below TN due to loss of spin-disorder scattering. Heat capacity data at 25 K < T < 300 K are fitted by the Debye model, yielding the same Debye temperature 268(2) K as found from rho(T). The extracted magnetic heat capacity is consistent with S = 7/2. The magnetic entropy at TN = 13.6 K is 83% of the expected asymptotic high-T value, with the remainder recovered by 30 K., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. B

The effect of Ni-doping on the magnetism and superconductivity in Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 has been studied through a systematic investigation of magnetic and superconducting properties of Eu0.5K0.5(Fe1-xNix)2As2 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.12) compounds by means of dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 is known to exhibit superconductivity with superconducting transition temperature Tc as high as 33 K. The Ni-doping leads to a rapid decrease in Tc; Tc is reduced to 23 K with 3% Ni-doping, and 8% Ni-doping suppresses the superconductivity to below 1.8 K. In 3% Ni-doped sample Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.97Ni0.03)2As2 superconductivity coexists with short range ordering of Eu2+ magnetic moments at Tm ~ 6 K. The suppression of superconductivity with Ni-doping is accompanied with the emergence of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering with TN = 8.5 K and 7 K for Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.92Ni0.08)2As2 and Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.88Ni0.12)2As2, respectively. The temperature and field dependent magnetic measurements for x = 0.08 and 0.12 samples reflect the possibility of a helical magnetic ordering of Eu2 moments. We suspect that the helimagnetism of Eu spins could be responsible for the destruction of superconductivity as has been observed in Co-doped EuFe2As2. The most striking feature seen in the resistivity data for x = 0.08 is the reappearance of the anomaly presumably due to spin density wave transition at around 60 K. This could be attributed to the compensation of holes (K-doping at Eu-site) by the electrons (Ni-doping at Fe site). The anomaly associated with spin density wave further shifts to 200 K for x = 0.12 for which the electron doping has almost compensated the holes in the system., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We present a complete characterization of ferromagnetic system CeIr2B2 using powder x-ray diffraction XRD, magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), specific heat C(T), electrical resistivity rho(T,H), and thermoelectric power S(T) measurements. Furthermore 11B NMR study was performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. The chi(T), C(T) and rho(T) data confirm bulk ferromagnetic ordering with Tc = 5.1 K. Ce ions in CeIr2B2 are in stable trivalent state. Our low-temperature C(T) data measured down to 0.4 K yield Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 73(4) mJ/molK2 which is much smaller than the previously reported value of gamma = 180 mJ/molK2 deduced from the specific heat measurement down to 2.5 K. For LaIr2B2 gamma = 6(1) mJ/molK2 which implies the density of states at the Fermi level D(EF) = 2.54 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions. The renormalization factor for quasi-particle density of states and hence for quasi-particle mass due to 4f correlations in CeIr2B2 is 12. The Kondo temperature TK ~ 4 K is estimated from the jump in specific heat of CeIr2B2 at Tc. Both C(T) and rho(T) data exhibit gapped-magnon behavior in magnetically ordered state with an energy gap Eg ~ 3.5 K. The rho data as a function of magnetic field H indicate a large negative magnetoresistance (MR) which is highest for T = 5 K.While at 5 K the negative MR keeps on increasing up to 10 T, at 2 K an upturn is observed near H = 3.5 T. On the other hand, the thermoelectric power data have small absolute values (S ~ 7 {\mu}V/K) indicating a weak Kondo interaction. A shoulder in S(T) at about 30 K followed by a minimum at ~ 10 K is attributed to crystal electric field (CEF) effects and the onset of magnetic ordering. 11B NMR line broadening provides strong evidence of ferromagnetic correlations below 40 K., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We present the structural, magnetic, thermal and ab-plane electronic transport properties of single crystals of CaCu1.7As2 grown by the self-flux technique that were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, isothermal magnetization M, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H. X-ray diffraction analysis of crushed crystals at room temperature confirm the collapsed tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with \sim 15% vacancies on the Cu sites as previously reported, corresponding to the composition CaCu1.7As2. The chi(T) data are diamagnetic, anisotropic and nearly independent of T. The chi is larger in the ab-plane than along the c-axis, as also observed previously for SrCu2As2 and for pure and doped BaFe2As2. The Cp(T) and rho(T) data indicate metallic sp-band character. In contrast to the chi(T) and Cp(T) data that do not show any evidence for phase transitions below 300 K, the rho(T) data exhibit a sharp increase in slope on cooling below a temperature Tt = 54-56 K, depending on the crystal. The \rho(T) data show no hysteresis on warming and cooling through Tt and the transition appears to be second order. The phase transition may arise from spatial ordering of the vacancies on the Cu sublattice. The Tt is found to be independent of H for H \leq 8 T.
