Partially and fully biodegradable natural fibre reinforced composites have been prepared using a novel patented woven-nonwoven technology. Natural fibres included jute and sisal, whereas the matrices were of synthetic polymers derived from petroleum (polypropylene (PP)) or natural (polylactic acid (PLA)) resources. The physical, mechanical and flammability properties of these partially and fully biodegradable composites have been studied and compared with those of similarly produced glass-fibre reinforced PP and PLA composites with a view to enabling their use in automotive applications. Mechanical test results showed that the tensile and flexural moduli of the PLA composites were higher than respective PP composites. In comparison, sisal composites have higher tensile and flexural moduli than jute composites. The fire performance of the composites studied by cone calorimetry showed that while natural fibre reinforcement had no effect on time-to-ignition, peak heat release was significantly reduced. PLA composites had lower burning propensity compared to respective PP composites.

Soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, is a major pest of soybean, Glycine max L. Merr. Soybean cultivars resistant to SCN are commonly grown in nematode-infested fields. The objective of this study was to examine the stability of SCN resistance in soybean genotypes at different soil temperatures and pH levels. Reactions of five SCN-resistant genotypes, Peking, Plant Introduction (PI) 88788, Custer, Bedford, and Forrest, to SCN races 3, 5, and 14 were studied at 20, 26, and 32 C, and at soil pH's 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5. Soybean cultivar Essex was included as a susceptible check. Temperature, SCN race, soybean genotype, and their interactions significantly affected SCN reproduction. The effect of temperature on reproduction was quadratic with the three races producing significantly greater numbers of cysts at 26 C; however, reproduction on resistant genotypes remained at a low level. Higher numbers of females matured at the soil pH levels of 6.5 and 7.5 than at pH 5.5. Across the ranges of temperature and soil pH studied, resistance to SCN in the soybean genotypes remained stable.

Transcription of genes encoding several enzymes and the activity of some of these enzymes of the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to synthesis of chemical and physical barriers for defense of plants against root pathogens was estimated in susceptible and resistant soybean infected with Heterodera glycines race 3 or with Meloidogyne incognita race 3. Transcription of genes encoding phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and the activity of this enzyme increased in resistant, but not susceptible, soybean cultivars after nematode infection. Likewise, transcription of the gene encoding 4-coumaryl CoA ligase and activity of this enzyme were enhanced in resistant, but not susceptible, soybean cultivars after nematode infection. Activity of PAL decreased in susceptible soybean after H. glycines or M. incognita infection. Transcription of enzymes later in the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to glyceollin synthesis increased in both resistant and susceptible soybean in response to nematode infection; the increase was greater in resistant cultivars. These results suggest possible reasons for the rapid induction of glyceollin synthesis immediately after infection of resistant soybean cultivars with H. glycines or M. incognita and the failure of this response in infected, susceptible soybean cultivars. Nematode infection had no effect on the activity of enzymes in the branch of the pathway leading to lignin synthesis.

Alternate planting dates and periodic destruction of the previous year's soybean crop as well as 1-year bare fallow were used to establish a range of population densities ofHeterodera glycines for the subsequent year. Soybean cultivar Coker 156 (susceptible, moderately tolerant) was compared to cultivars Essex (susceptible, intolerant) and Bedford (resistant) to evaluate tolerance at different H. glycines population densities established through the previous year's treatments. Yield of Coker 156 was consistently intermediate between yields of Bedford and Essex in 1986 and 1987. Yield of Essex was negatively correlated (P = 0.05) with preplant egg numbers of H. glycines in 1987, whereas yield of Bedford and Coker 156 were not related to nematode density. Reproduction of H. glycines was greater (P = 0.05) on the moderately tolerant Coker 156 than on either of the other cultivars.
