The Pacific coastal desert of Peru harbors a unique bat fauna, including narrowly endemic taxa adapted to arid environments. This region was also the setting where several pre-Incan civilizations flourished. The Moche culture (100–850 CE) was one of those, with a rich and diverse material culture that included strikingly realistic ceramic representations of the regional flora and fauna. In particular, one Mochica pottery vessel is in the form of a bat that, based on external characteristics (large pinnae and tragus, pinnae connected by high band of membrane across the forehead, and lack of noseleaf), clearly represents an individual of the vespertilionid genus Histiotus. The morphological characteristics observed in this vessel, in addition to the area of influence of the Moche culture, suggests that this vessel depicts a species previously unknown to science that we describe here as new on the basis of two specimens obtained in 2012 in the Peruvian department of Piura. Our new species, Histiotus mochica, can be distinguished from other congeners by having unicolored dorsal fur, medial lobes of pinnae greater than 9.5 mm wide, and a well-developed (>4.3 mm high) transverse band of skin connecting the pinnae. Cytochrome b sequence data indicate that the new species is sister to H. humboldti from the Andes of Colombia and northern Ecuador. The new species is a medium-sized Histiotus that clusters with H. laephotis, H. velatus, and with small specimens of H. montanus in our multivariate analyses. With the description of H. mochica, the diversity of the genus increases to 11 species. We provide a key based on external characters of all known species of Histiotus.

Eptesicus (Histiotus) magellanicus is a relatively rare and poorly known Patagonian endemic. This species is currently recognized as a valid, butuntil recently some authors treated it as a subspecies of E. (H.) montanus. In fact, nomolecular data exist to support the distinctiveness of the former. In Patagonia, the distribution of these two speciesoverlap marginally; they are also sympatric with a third Histiotus species,E. (H.) macrotus. In this study, we present for the _rsttime molecular data that corroborate morphological evidence of the separationbetween E. (H.) magellanicus from other Eptesicus (Histiotus)species, in special the ones with which it shares its distribution. Wesequenced a nuclear intron (THY) and thecytochrome b (Cyt b) gene from specimens of E. (H.) magellanicus, E. (H.) montanus, and E. (H.) macrotus, collected in theChubut Province (Argentina), and from an undescribed Eptesicus (Histiotus)species from Peru. We included these sequences in a phylogenetic analysistogether with previously published sequences of four typical Eptesicus species. The THY intron showed very little variation, while the Cyt b phylogeny recovered three highly supported Histiotus clades. A highly supported clade comprising all specimens of E. (H.) magellanicus was the _rst to split o_ Histiotus,suggesting that the Andean region was important during the early diversi_cationof the genus. Unexpectedly, the clade containing the specimens of E. (H.) macrotus and E. (H.) montanus showed no internal resolution, eitherquestioning their mutualidentity as a separate species, or suggesting the occurrence of localhybridization and introgression. Actualmente Eptesicus (Histiotus) magellanicus es reconocida como especie válida; sin embargo, recientemente ha sido considerada como subespecie de Eptesicus (H.) montanus por algunos autores. En Patagonia estas dos especies solapan sus distribuciones marginalmente, donde además son simpátricas con una tercera especie, Eptesicus (H.) macrotus. En este estudio presentamos por primera vez datos moleculares que corroboran la evidencia morfológica que diferencian a E. (H.) magellanicus del resto de las especies de Histiotus, en especial con aquellas con las que comparte su distribución. Se secuenciaron un intron del gen de la tirotropina y gen citocromo b para especímenes de E. (H.) magellanicus, E. (H.) montanus, y E. (H.) macrotus, colectados en la provincia del Chubut (Argentina), y dos ejemplares de Eptesicus (H.) sp. de Perú. Analizamos sus secuencias junto con otras previamente publicadas para cuatro especies típicas de Eptesicus. El gen tirotropina mostró muy poca variación, mientras que la filogenia obtenida con el gen citocromo b recuperó tres clados de Histiotus fuertemente soportados. El clado que incluyó a todos los especímenes de E. (H.) magellanicus fue el primero en separarse dentro de Histiotus, sugiriendo que la región andina fue importante durante la diversificación temprana del género. Inesperadamente, el clado que contenía las muestras de E. (H.) macrotus y de E. (H.) montanus no mostró resolución interna, sugiriendo dos posibles alternativas, la existencia de una única especie o la ocurrencia de hibridación e introgresión local. Fil: Giménez, Analía Laura. Partitioning of food resources is one of the main drivers of bat community organization. We investigated the trophic structure of the Patagonian bat ensemble which comprises eight insectivorous species classified in the families Vespertilionidae and Molossidae. Natural history studies, particularly those of diet and resource use, are scarce for these species and for bats of harsh environments generally. Here, we report the analysis of 140 dietary records from the eight Patagonian species sampled in 23 Western Central Patagonian localities in Chubut Province, Argentina. We estimated the dietary composition, both as percentage volume and as frequency of occurrence, of each dietary item, which was identified to the level of order. Trophic-niche breadth and average prey hardness were calculated for each bat species. We applied a principal components analysis for volume dietary data and correspondence analysis for frequency data. We recorded six insect orders (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, Diptera, Neuroptera, and Hemiptera) in different proportions across species. The latter also diverged in average prey hardness and trophic-niche breadth. This study provides the first quantitative picture of trophic organization in bats from Patagonian habitats. While Myotis species mainly consumed Coleoptera, followed by Lepidoptera and Diptera, Lasiurus species took chiefly Lepidoptera; Histiotus predominantly hunted for Coleoptera, and T. brasiliensis captured chiefly Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera. These different dietary combinations indicate resource partitioning among three vespertilionid and one molossid genera, as well as a degree of niche organization in Patagonian bats, which help to understand their ecosystem role as insect predators.

Sobre la distinción y disponibilidad de los nuevos taxones propuestos por Agnolin et al. 2019. Recientemente, Agnolin et al. (2019) describieron 14 especies nuevas de mamíferos, incluyendo 12 roedores, un murciélago y un carnívoro, y una nueva subespecie de roedor. Además, estos autores propusieron varios otros actos nomenclatoriales: algunas formas nominales se eliminaron de las sinonimias y se hipotetizaron como especies distintas; se nombraron tres nuevos géneros, una subtribu y una tribu demamíferos. Revisamos todos los actos nomenclatoriales propuestos por Agnolin et al. (2019) y concluimos que las 14 nuevas especies y la nueva subespecie, así como las formas eliminadas de las sinonimias, deben tratarse como sinónimos de especies ya conocidas. Sugerimos lo mismo con respecto a los tres nuevos taxones supraespecí cos presentados por Agnolin et al. (2019), de los cuales dos no están disponibles ya que no cumplen con las disposiciones del Código Internacional de Nomenclatura Zoológica. Terminamos esta contribución criticando la forma en que Agnolin et al. (2019) realizaron su abordaje taxonómico. Recently, Agnolin et al. (2019) described 14 new species of mammals, including 12 rodents,one bat, and one carnivore, and one new subspecies of rodent. In addition, these authors proposed severalother nomenclatorial acts: some nominal forms were removed from synonymies and hypothesized as distinctspecies, at the time that three new genera, one subtribe, and one tribe of mammals were also named. Wereviewed the merits of all nomenclatorial acts proposed by Agnolin at al. (2019) and concluded that all 14new species and the new subspecies, as well as those forms removed from synonymies, should be treatedas synonyms of already known species. We suggest the same regarding the three new supraspecic taxapresented by Agnolin et al., two of which are not available as they fail to comply with the provisions of theInternational Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The Patagonian weasel (Lyncodon patagonicus) is one of the least known carnivores from South America, and excluding some contributions, knowledge of it seems anecdotal. It is supposed to inhabit herbaceous and arid environments of Argentina and Chile. Here we assess the potential distribution of the Patagonian weasel both during the present and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We also integrate some of this information, providing a historical and geographic analysis (both through ecological niche modeling and biogeographic schemes) of the distribution of L. patagonicus. We found 2 major core areas of distribution, 1 in northwestern Argentina and another in southern Argentina (i.e., Patagonia). Patagonian weasel distribution seems to be primarily related to cold areas with marked temperature seasonality and elevations below 2,000 m above sea level. From LGM to the present, we observed a major retraction in potential distribution areas that might indicate the existence of a vicariance process affecting Patagonian weasel distribution. The small mammal fauna from northwestern Chubut Province (Argentina) is poorly known. We herein report small mammal assemblages from three new localities: Sierras de Tecka, an extra-Andean system elevated 900 m.a.sl.; Estancia La Mimosa on the Tecka river valley (at ca. 650 m.a.sl.); and Arroyo Pescado (at ca. 620 m.a.sl.) 40 km north of the other sites. Specimens were recovered from disaggregated owl pellets. Total species richness includes 16 native (13 sigmodontine and two caviomorph rodents, and one marsupial) and one introduced species. Estancia La Mimosa had the highest richness (n = 14), while Arroyo Pescado the lowest (n = 11). Four species were only recorded at Estancia La Mimosa (Akodon iniscatus, Calomys musculinus, Oligoryzomys longicaudatus and Mus musculus), two in Sierras de Tecka (Notiomys edwardsii and Microcavia australis) and one in Arroyo Pescado (Geoxus valdivianus). This work also adds new localities for Akodon iniscatus, Geoxus valdivianus, Lestodelphys halli and Notiomys edwardsii in western Chubut Province. Fil: Schiaffini, Mauro Ignacio. Four morphologically similar species of insectivorous bats in the genus Lasiurus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) regularly occur in the American Southern Cone. Three of them (Lasiurus cinereus, L. blossevillii and L. ega) are sympatric over many regions, whereas the remaining species (L. varius, closely related to L. blossevillii) is allopatric, occurring in the Patagonian Temperate Rainforest. A multivariate analysis of 14 craniodental variables for 99 specimens from the four species confirmed size separating two small species from two large ones, and revealed morphofunctional aspects of mastication segregating the two large species on the basis of differences in temporal muscle function (coronoid process height and length of rostrum). We predict ecological (trophic) differences among these lasiurines consistent with their segregation in the morphofunctional space and in combination with the sympatric vs. allopatric condition of species pairs or triads.
