Credit union is considered as an alternative solution for global poverty and financial inclusiveness for social development. However, to achieve this goal, first and foremost a credit union must be sustainable. The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic literature review on the key determinants of sustainability of credit unions and its measurements through comprehensive literature search and assessment based on the PRISMA-P guidelines. The findings reveal standard quantitative measures such as operations of self-sufficiency ratio, financial sustainability score, return on assets and pearl index (two studies qualitatively assessed governance structure and membership rate as measures). Additionally, key factors such as efficiency, loan management factors, deposit mobilization, portfolio at risk, credit risk, regulatory environment, and asset factors are significant determinants of sustainability of credit unions. The findings suggest a great need for complementarity of role and responsible conduct of the key stakeholders (members), staff, management and enabling regulatory environment for sustainable credit union. The underlying problems of Sub-Saharan African development are a result of a crisis in governance. Over the years, issues of governance and economic development have been the focus of debate in academia. However, the existing literature has not adequately explored the association between good governance and economic complexity. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate the short-run and long-run relationships between economic complexity and good governance in 27 Sub-Saharan African countries for the period 1996–2019 using the PMG-ARDL model. The findings reveal that economic complexity, foreign aid, and the Gini coefficient have a positive and statistically significant long-run impact on good governance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, the null hypothesis that economic complexity has a significantly positive impact on good governance is accepted by these findings. The short-run dynamics results reveal that economic complexity and foreign aid have a negative and insignificant impact on good governance, while foreign direct investment, the Gini coefficient, and unemployment have a positive and insignificant impact on good governance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on the findings, it is recommended that policymakers in the region place more emphasis on structural transformations to transform their productive structures, which will ultimately lead to higher economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The interaction between family structure and household well-being has received considerable attention in research over the past decades. Very few studies, however, go beyond linking marital component of family structure with household income. This paper uses cross-sectional and panel analytic techniques with data from National Income Dynamic Survey (NIDS) to investigate the effects of family structure on household well-being. Findings from this study show that intact married and cohabiting households have significant positive relationship with household reported well-being, and subjective wellbeing, respectively. Furthermore, extended households, households headed by females and grandparents, have significant negative relationship with household income and consumption. Lastly, bigger household size has significant negative relationship with household reported well-being. Based on the findings, policy towards economic empowerment for poorer households, enhancing income generating, and livelihood projects are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in average wage are usually attributed to technological change in the past industrial revolutions. With the emergence and gradual explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) in the 4th industrial revolution, this paper applies panel vector autoregressive technique, with annual data from the World Bank and global economy from 2004 to 2017, to examine the effect of artificial intelligence on average wages in Southern Africa. Findings from the study show that artificial intelligence has a significant negative relationship with average wages but is positively associated with gross domestic product per capita (GDPC), unemployment and inflation. The study also finds inflation and GDPC to be positively associated with average wage. Based on the finding, policy direction focusing on wage stabilisation, redistribution of income, advance learning and skill development training that promote competitiveness to computerisation is recommended. The increasing level of automation in the fourth industrial revolution has received a global interest in research and political landscape in recent years. While some research advances have been made in the developed world with regard to its implications for unemployment, next to no study has so far sought to establish if there is any statistical relationship between automation and unemployment in developing countries where unemployment is very high. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of automation on unemployment in Southern Africa. Findings from the study show that automation has a significant positive relationship with unemployment rate. The study also finds foreign direct investment and business cycle (higher production output change) to be negatively associated with unemployment. Based on these findings, it is recommended that proper investment in learning and skill development training aimed at making individuals more competitive with regard to automation be pursued to increase the prospect of employment. Background: The pathway from teen motherhood to later life outcomes has received considerable attention in both research and political agenda. Very few studies have however, looked beyond educational and economic outcomes.Data source and methods: This paper uses pooled data from four waves of National Income Dynamic Study (NIDS) survey collected from 2008-2014 in South Africa to investigate the impacts of early motherhood on mothers’ later life outcomes using propensity score matching and endogenous treatment techniques.Results: The study reveals that teen motherhood reduces women’s educational attainment (by -5.2years), economic well-being (-19.9%), psychological well-being (by increasing depression score by 5.2) and life satisfaction (by -1.24) each at 0.1% significance level.Conclusions: Teen motherhood has significant negative effects on women’s education, economic well-being, psychological well-being and life satisfaction but insignificant effect on health related outcomes. We recommend multi-sectoral policy intervention to minimize teenage pregnancy and manage the adverse consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
