Background and purpose: Regenerative treatments in endodontics are biological treatments to manage immature teeth, remove inflamed and necrotic tissue, and create a suitable environment for tissue repair. In these treatments, substances with reparative properties of dental pulp and dentin are placed on the pulpal tissue. Interleukin-6 is one of the cytokines secreted in response to various immune activities of the body and studies have demonstrated its vital role in mineralization induction and hard tissue formation. Recently, calcium silicate-based materials have been widely implemented in dentistry due to their great biocompatibility and hard tissue formation induction. Considering the role of IL-6 in the regulation of stem cells, the purpose of this study is to compare the effect of CEM cement, Biodentine, TheraCal LC, and MTA on the level of IL-6 secretion by dental pulp stem cells. Materials and methods: In this laboratory study, 4 types of cement were used as the main groups, and 1 control group contained culture medium without cement. Discs were prepared under sterile conditions in six-well plates with a diameter of 35 mm and a height of 2 mm and they were given time to set for 48 hours. Human pulp stem cells were obtained from Iran's Center for Biological Resources and cultured in a culture medium containing DMEM with 15% FBS and 1% penicillin-streptomycin (10,000 units/ml) as antibiotics. Pulp stem cells at passages 3-5 were used for experiments. Discs of each cement were prepared under sterile conditions and according to the manufacturer's instructions. To prepare the extract of each cement, the DMEM cell culture medium was placed near these discs for 24 hours. Then, human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) were cultured in the vicinity of the disc extract for 72 hours. After that, this extract was collected and the level of IL-6 secretion in it was measured by the ELISA method. The experiments were repeated 3 times. Then the obtained data were entered into SPSS 16 software and analyzed using analysis of variance and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The results showed that the highest level of IL-6 secretion by cells was in the presence of TheraCal LC, Biodentine, and CEM, respectively; But there was no significant difference between the groups. Abstract Background Oral aphthous stomatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition. Numerous medications have been investigated to treat the symptoms of the disease. However, these days patients prefer herbal medicines due to lower side effects. Considering the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-oxidant properties of Caffeic acid and its few side effects, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of Caffeic acid on recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). investigating the effect of caffeic acid mucoadhesive tablets on the size and pain intensity of the aphthous lesions. Methods in this double-blinded clinical trial study, 47 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling method. The patients were assigned to two groups randomly; the control group (placebo recipients) and the intervention group (Caffeic acid recipients). Patients were followed up for 7 days following the intervention. The diameter of the inflammatory lesion was measured in millimeters, and the pain intensity was recorded based on the VAS scale (Visual Analogue Scale). This trial was approved by the medical ethics committee of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences (Ethical code: IR.MAZUMS.REC.1401.261) and received IRCT code of IRCT20220815055700N1on 03/09/2022. Background and purpose: Metals are widely influenced in environmental pollution and disease development in humans. Since children are exposed to chemicals in the environment more than adults, risk assessment should be taken into consideration. Therefore, the investigation of the difference in children's contact levels in environments with different pollution and monitoring the concentration of metals through tissue sampling are essential for identifying and preventing such effects. Materials and methods: Teeth were collected according to the inclusion criteria from dental clinics in Sari and Tehran. The samples were completely turned into powder by a grinder and prepared using an acid dissolution process to determine the concentration of metals by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Moreover, the maximum, minimum, mean, median and standard deviation values of the data were calculated. The normality of the data was determined by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS statistical software (v. 16). Abstract Background Recurrent aphthous stomatitis has a complex and inflammatory origin. Among the great variety of medications it is increasingly common to use herbal medicines due to the adverse side effects of chemical medications. Considering the anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamaldehyde and the lack of studies related to the effectiveness of its nano form; This study investigates the effect of cinnamaldehyde and nano cinnamaldehyde on the healing rate of recurrent aphthous stomatitis lesions. Methods In a laboratory experiment, cinnamaldehyde was converted into niosomal nanoparticles. The niosome vesicles diameter and polydispersity index were measured at 25°C using a dynamic light scattering (DLS) Mastersizer 2000 (Malvern Panalytical technologies: UK) and Zetasizer Nano ZS system (Malvern Instruments Worcestershire: UK). After characterizing these particles, the (2,3-Bis-(2-Methoxy-4-Nitro-5-Sulfophenyl)-2H-Tetrazolium-5-Carboxanilide) [XTT] assay was used to assess the toxicity of cinnamaldehyde and nano cinnamaldehyde on gingival fibroblast (HGF) and macrophage (THP-1) cells. By determining the release of TNF-α, IL-6, and TGF-β cytokines using ELISA kits, the level of tissue repair and anti-inflammatory capabilities of these two substances were evaluated. Results The size and loading rate of the cinnamaldehyde nanoparticles were established after its creation. The optimized nanovesicle exhibited the following characteristics: particle size of 228.75 ± 2.38 nm, PDI of 0.244 ± 0.01, the zeta potential of -10.87 ± 1.09 mV and the drug encapsulation percentage of 66.72 ± 3.93%. PDIs range was between 0.242–0.274. The zeta potential values at 25°C were from -2.67 to -12.9 mV. The results of the XTT test demonstrated that nano cinnamaldehyde exhibited dose-dependent toxicity effects. Moreover, nano cinnamaldehyde released more TGF-β and had better reparative effects when taken at lower concentrations than cinnamaldehyde. Conclusion Nano cinnamaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde are effective in repairing tissue when used in non-toxic amounts. After confirmation in animal models, it is envisaged that these substances can be utilized to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Abstract Background Aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases. Due to the commonness of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and considering the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and tissue regenerative properties of atorvastatin and the lack of a study on the effect of statins on minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis, this study investigates the effect of atorvastatin mucoadhesive tablets as a topical treatment on reduction of symptoms and duration of this disease. Methods This study is a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial. Patients were divided into two groups, atorvastatin and, placebo; each of the patients received three mucoadhesive tablets daily in the morning, noon, and night. Finally, the patients were examined on days 0 (baseline), 3, 5, and 7 to determine the diameter of the inflammatory halo. The VAS scale was used to evaluate pain intensity for up to 7 days after each meal. The data was entered into SPSS 24 software and analyzed. Results The halo diameter did not significantly differ between the two groups on baseline (P > 0.05). However, on the study’s third, fifth, and seventh days, the difference between the two groups was remarkable, so in the atorvastatin group, the size of the lesions decreased in shorter healing time (P

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related respiratory disorder that has a relatively high prevalence among children and adults. OSA has several anatomical and pathophysiological etiologies and is characterized by recurrent periods of narrowing of the pharynx and airway, increased resistance to airflow, and decreased or interrupted airflow during sleep. This disease has several complications which lead to decreased quality of life. Once diagnosed, orthodontists are able to prescribe various methods to treat the disease. The aim of the present study was to review effective orthodontic treatments and their advantages and disadvantages in treatment of OSA. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles published in English until April 30, 2022. Articles on orthodontic treatments in patients with OSA were included. After assessment of studies, 60 articles were included in current review. Findings showed that treatment with oral appliances is effective in OSA patients. Due to the unwanted dental and skeletal side effects of oral appliances in long-term use, it seems better to have this treatment performed by an orthodontist to regularly monitor the occlusion of the teeth and, if necessary, to change the settings of the appliances. In patients with severe OSA, it is better to evaluate the effectiveness of appliance therapy and, if needed, perform surgical treatments.

Background. Root canal obturation is performed by gutta-percha cones and sealer. Therefore, these materials, specially sealers, must be biocompatible. This study investigated the cytotoxicity and mineralization activity of two calcium silicate-based sealers (Endoseal MTA and Ceraseal) and an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH26). Materials and Methods. Background and purpose: In many universities, the physical presence of dental students is required to learn the theoretical sciences and clinical skills. These students are at a high risk to get infected with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) because aerosol production and close contact with patients is inevitable. In this review study, the challenges in educating dental students during the COVID-19 pandemic and related solutions are discussed. Materials and methods: MEDLINE, Scopus, Ovid, and Google scholar databases were searched for relevant articles published in English until September 7, 2020. Articles with the target population of specialty/general dentistry students were included and studies associated with graduate dentists or other pandemics were excluded. After quality assessment, 49 studies were included in current review. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption in traditional face-to-face dental education which was replaced by synchronous learning. This type of learning is faced with some challenges, including lack of sufficient facilities and lack of familiarity of involved people. In this situation, teaching and assessment of theoretical modules should continue virtually with high quality. Clinical units should also be organized by grouping students in smaller numbers and more shifts while adhering to new infection control protocols. Research can also be continued on animal models and COVID-19-related subjects. Conclusion: Improving the structure of theoretical and clinical education in dentistry is recommended to deal with similar crises in the future.
