Abstract

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has an ever-increasing role in the way commercial businesses operate. Team sport organisations are not immune to this trend. CSR is a strategic issue for sport organisations, with professional teams across a range of sports and national contexts now modifying their organisational structure by establishing charitable foundations tasked with delivering their CSR content. These structural changes inevitably bring in new organisational actors who, in varying degrees, influence ̀the actual implementation of CSR in the professional sports team context. Organisational complexity is therefore increasing regarding CSR, as is the need to capture its elements at both cross-organisational and individual levels. This is especially important given that, unlike mainstream (corporate) foundations that deal directly with a ‘parent’ company, professional sport leagues often mandate the implementation of CSR through central funding mechanisms. This in turn emphasises the intricacy of the process and the dynamics amongst organisational actors at various levels. To date, no studies have attempted to address this complexity. The present thesis aims to help fill the gap by examining the managerial decision-making process in the organisational context of charitable foundations established by English professional football clubs. The current study employs a grounded theory methodology as it aims to develop a substantive theory of how managers responsible for the formulation and implementation of CSR-related programmes in English football make professional decisions. The research utilises the Straussian variant of grounded theory, which accepts that humans shape their institutions as much as institutions shape people. The study also seeks cognitive similarity, a concept that implies some form of similar attribution of meaning, understanding or interpretation amongst individuals in multiple organisations. Although its purpose was to develop an individual-based substantive theory grounded in the way managers make decisions regarding CSR, throughout the focus has been on decision-making itself rather than on the individuals who facilitate this process. The study is populated with the top two divisions of English football and employs two data collection techniques: organisational documents and semi-structured interviews. The fieldwork took place in three different phases, with the first ̀consisting of two sub-phases. Phase 1a emphasised the analysis of organisational documents (a total of 25 documents from 16 football organisations), while the following phases of the fieldwork were based on constant comparative data analysis from 32 interviews. The theoretical framework that emerged from this study is one of assessable transcendence; in a conceptually abstract fashion, ‘assessable transcendence’ concerns a process that, fortified ̀by passion, contingent on trust, sustained by communication and substantiated by factual performance, enables the formulation and implementation of CSR-related programmes in this context. The social process that emerged from this study, therefore, consists of an intrinsic (that is, passion) and an extrinsic (that is, trust) stimulus, both of which are central components of the micro-social process transcending. These two stimuli, however, require the support of both internal and external communication (abstractly expressed through the micro-social process manoeuvring), and thus all three together form a ‘coalition’ which can enhance both business and social performance (largely expressed by the first ̀two micro-social processes, namely safeguarding and harmonising). Accordingly, two interrelated aspects of the decision-making process constitute a common thread in this research: (a) the recognition that social consciousness stimulates the process of assessable transcendence in an indispensable and limitless way, and (b) an understanding that transcendence cannot occur without either continuous achievement or the dissemination of concrete ‘CSR impact’ in social and business forms alike (hence assessable). The significance of this doctoral thesis for the sport management literature is four-fold. First, it focuses on the individual level of analysis, thereby offering a framework that explains the decision-making of those individuals responsible for the application of CSR in professional team sport organisations. By doing so, it bridges the micro/macro divide by integrating the micro-domain’s focus on individuals (i.e., foundation managers) with those of the meso- and macro- domains. Second, it moves away from mono-theoretical approaches that have been mainly used for the examination of CSR in the sporting context. By doing so, it illustrates that different, and often opposing, theoretical approaches may be needed in order to fully capture and theoretically explain the way in which the CSR practice occurs. Third, it shifts the focus of scholarly activity away from CSR content-based research towards more process-oriented approaches. CSR content research does little to explain how professional teams achieve and maintain such positioning through deliberate and trial-and-error CSR actions initiated by the individuals therein. Fourth, an in relation to the previous point, it employs a process-oriented methodology (namely, grounded theory) whose utilisation in sport management research has been either non-existent or a ‘pick and mix’ practice. By doing so, the current thesis responds to calls for internal consistency and methodological coherence, thereby adding to the limited number of studies that have utilised this methodology in a rounded manner. The theoretical framework presented in this dissertation has emerged from exploratory study. As such, the four micro-social processes, their associative meanings and, more importantly, the four principal concepts that hold assessable transcendence are regarded as tentative and require substantiation through further research. To this end, a number of research propositions are offered that can serve as a starting point towards a continued exploration of those moderating and mediating factors on the formulation and implementation of CSR in team sport organisations.

Abstract

The age we live in is the age of the technological revolution: the social networks, virtual communities, 3D worlds, digital applications, immersive and collaborative games, are able to change our perception of the world as well as the way information is shared and transmitted. The shift of our society towards new technol-ogies has greatly facilitated the integration of these technologies (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Photo-grammetry, etc.) in places such as archaeology, which in the past seemed like a very difficult idea. In recent years, archaeologists have begun to incorporate new technologies that can assist them in archaeological exca-vations. Such technologies include 3D Imaging Surveying methods (LiDAR, Mobile and Terrestrial 3D Scan-ners), Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Photogrammetry as well as 3D Visualization Methods (Virtual and Augmented Reality) for the three-dimensional or two-dimensional display of sites where archaeological exca-vations are carried out. A big advantage of new technologies is the highly increasing capabilities and user friendliness over cost ratio, which encourages archaeologists to enter the emerging realm of Digital Archaeol-ogy. This paper summarises cutting-edge technologies that may assist archaeologists during the excavations process and reports related projects. At the same time, it overviews the literature for applications, tools and software implemented to operate directly to the excavation field (in situ) for the documentation, management, integration of the archaeological information and to facilitate the exchange, direct access and interoperability of the scientific data. We strongly believe that the present review would be very helpful to young researchers in the of field Digital Archaeology, since it assembles valuable knowledge from the scientific literature.

18. Time-related aortic inflammatory response, as assessed with 18F-FDG PET/CT, in patients hospitalized with severely or critical COVID-19: the COVAIR study

Abstract

Aim: Arterial involvement has been implicated in the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). Fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) imaging is a valuable tool for the assessment of aortic inflammation and is a predictor of outcome. We sought to prospectively assess the presence of aortic inflammation and its time-dependent trend in patients with COVID-19. Methods: Between November 2020 and May 2021, in this pilot, case-control study, we recruited 20 patients with severe or critical COVID-19 (mean age of 59 ± 12 years), while 10 age and sex-matched individuals served as the control group. Aortic inflammation was assessed by measuring 18F-FDG uptake in PET/CT performed 20-120 days post-admission. Global aortic target to background ratio (GLA-TBR) was calculated as the sum of TBRs of ascending and descending aorta, aortic arch, and abdominal aorta divided by 4. Index aortic segment TBR (IAS-TBR) was designated as the aortic segment with the highest TBR. Results: There was no significant difference in aortic 18F-FDG PET/CT uptake between patients and controls (GLA-TBR: 1.46 [1.40-1.57] vs. 1.43 [1.32-1.70], respectively, P = 0.422 and IAS-TBR: 1.60 [1.50-1.67] vs. 1.50 [1.42-1.61], respectively, P = 0.155). There was a moderate correlation between aortic TBR values (both GLA and IAS) and time distance from admission to 18F-FDG PET-CT scan (Spearman’s rho = − 0.528, P = 0.017 and Spearman’s rho = − 0.480, p = 0.032, respectively). Patients who were scanned less than or equal to 60 days from admission (n = 11) had significantly higher GLA-TBR values compared to patients that were examined more than 60 days post-admission (GLA-TBR: 1.53 [1.42-1.60] vs. 1.40 [1.33-1.45], respectively, P = 0.016 and IAS-TBR: 1.64 [1.51-1.74] vs. 1.52 [1.46-1.60], respectively, P = 0.038). There was a significant difference in IAS- TBR between patients scanned ≤ 60 days and controls (1.64 [1.51-1.74] vs. 1.50 [1.41-1.61], P = 0.036). Conclusion: This is the first study suggesting that aortic inflammation, as assessed by 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging, is increased in the early post COVID phase in patients with severe or critical COVID-19 and largely resolves over time. Our findings may have important implications for the understanding of the course of the disease and for improving our preventive and therapeutic strategies. © 2022, The Author(s) under exclusive licence to American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

Abstract

In recent years, LiDAR has seen an increased application in the field of archaeological documentation, as it allows for rapid acquisition of spatially dense and accurate point clouds. The three-dimensional survey and monitoring of ongoing excavations is a topic of particular interest for archaeological documentation, due to the importance of recording stratigraphy during the destructive and irreversible process of the excavation, and the challenges of obtaining complete photorealistic digital representations of the archaeological terrain. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of obtaining in real time high-quality digital models and maps of the stratigraphy via laser scanning, aiming to establish a replicable methodology for archaeological practice. Optimal acquisition and processing scenarios are explored for both terrestrial and drone-mounted LiDAR. The application concerns two different case studies of archaeological interest with different topography. 26. Effect of long term enzyme replacement therapy in late onset Pompe disease: A single-centre experience

Abstract

Late onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is a slowly progressive metabolic myopathy with variable clinical severity. The advent of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has modified the natural course of the disease, though the treatment effect on adult patients is modest compared to infants with the classic form. This study aims to describe the long-term clinical outcome of the Greek LOPD cohort, as assessed by 6 min walk test, muscle strength using MRC grading scale and spirometry. ERT efficacy was estimated using statistical methodology that is novel in the context of Pompe disease, which at the same time is well-suited to longitudinal studies with small samples and missing data (local non-linear regression analysis). Improvement over baseline was significant at 1 year for motor performance and muscle strength (p < 0.05), and at 2 years for FVC-U and FVC-S (p < 0.05). A subgroup analysis showed that the onset of the disease before adulthood (18 years), a male gender, and a latency of more than 2 years between the onset of symptoms and ERT administration are unfavorable prognostic factors. Conclusively, this study presents longitudinal data from the Greek LOPD cohort supporting previous observations, that therapeutic delay is related to worse prognosis and treatment effects may decline after several years of ERT. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation requiring mitral valve replacement (MVR), the choice of the prosthesis type is crucial. The exercise hemodynamic and functional capacity performance in patients with contemporary prostheses have never been investigated. To compare exercise hemodynamic and functional capacity between biological (MVRb) and mechanical (MVRm) prostheses. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed 86 consecutive patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation who underwent MVRb (n=41) or MVRm (n=45) and coronary artery bypass grafting. All patients underwent preoperative resting echocardiography and 6-minute walking test. At follow-up, exercise stress echocardiography was performed, and the 6-minute walking test was repeated. Resting and exercise indexed effective orifice areas of MVRm were larger when compared with MVRb (resting: 1.30±0.2 versus 1.19±0.3 cm 2 /m 2 ; P=0.03; exercise: 1.57±0.2 versus 1.18±0.3 cm 2 /m 2 ; P=0.0001). The MVRm had lower exercise systolic pulmonary arterial pressure at follow-up compared with MVRb (41±5 versus 59±7 mm Hg; P=0.0001). Six-minute walking test distance was improved in the MVRm (pre-operative: 242±43, post-operative: 290±50 m; P=0.001), whereas it remained similar in the MVRb (pre-operative: 250±40, post-operative: 220±44 m; P=0.13). In multivariable analysis, type of prosthesis, exercise indexed effective orifice area, and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure were joint predictors of change in 6-minute walking test (ie, difference between baseline and follow-up). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation, bioprostheses are associated with worse hemodynamic performance and reduced functional capacity, when compared with MVRm. Randomized studies with longer follow-up including quality of life and survival data are required to confirm these results.

In this new landscape, the communication between the resource-constrained device and the fixed infrastructure is similarly expanded to include new messages of varying importance, control, and monitoring. To efficiently and effectively control the exchange of such messages subject to the stochastic nature of the underlying wireless network, we design a time-optimized, dynamic, and distributed decision-making mechanism based on the principles of the Optimal Stopping and Change Detection theories. The findings from our experimentation platform are promising and solidly supportive to a vast spectrum of real-time and latency-sensitive applications with quality-of-service requirements in mobile IoT environments.

Abstract

This paper presents SemMR, a semantic framework for modelling interactions between human and non-human entities and managing reusable and optimized cultural experiences, towards a shared cultural experience ecosystem that might seamlessly accommodate mixed reality experiences. The SemMR framework synthesizes and integrates interaction data into semantically rich reusable structures and facilitates the interaction between different types of entities in a symbiotic way, within a large, virtual, and fully experiential open world, promoting experience sharing at the user level, as well as data/application interoperability and low-effort implementation at the software engineering level. The proposed semantic framework introduces methods for low-effort implementation and the deployment of open and reusable cultural content, applications, and tools, around the concept of cultural experience as a semantic trajectory or simply, experience as a trajectory (eX-trajectory). The methods facilitate the collection and analysis of data regarding the behaviour of users and their interaction with other users and the environment, towards optimizing eX-trajectories via reconfiguration. The SemMR framework supports the synthesis, enhancement, and recommendation of highly complex reconfigurable eX-trajectories, while using semantically integrated disparate and heterogeneous related data. Overall, this work aims to semantically manage interactions and experiences through the eX-trajectory concept, towards delivering enriched cultural experiences. © 2020 by the authors. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd Risk assessment of chemicals occurring in our diet is commonly performed for single chemicals without considering exposure to other chemicals. We performed a case study on risk assessment of combined dietary exposure to chemicals from different regulatory silos, i.e. pesticides (PPRs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and food additives (FAs). Chemicals were grouped into the cumulative assessment group (CAG) liver steatosis using a component-based approach. Based on literature, the CAG included 144 PPRs, 49 POPS and 7 FAs for which concentration data were available. For each silo, chronic combined dietary exposure was assessed for adults and children of nine European countries following the most commonly used exposure methodologies in Europe and by using a relative potency factor approach. For risk characterization, a Margin of Exposure (MOE) was calculated. To overarch the risk across silos, a normalised combined margin of exposure (nMOET) approach was proposed. This case study demonstrated that risk assessment of combined exposure to chemicals can be performed within regulatory silos. It also highlighted important differences in the conservatism of exposure scenarios, the derivation of point of departures and the subsequent acceptable MOEs between the silos. To overarch the risk despite these differences, a nMOET approach can be used.

Abstract

In distributed computing environments, the collaboration of nodes for predictive analytics at the network edge plays a crucial role in supporting real-time services. When a node’s service becomes unavailable for various reasons (e.g., service updates, node maintenance, or even node failure), the rest of the available nodes connot efficiently replace its service due to different data and predictive models (e.g., machine learning [ML] models). To address this, we propose decision-making strategies rooted in the statistical signatures of nodes’ data. Specifically, these signatures refer to the unique patterns and behaviors within each node’s data that can be leveraged to predict the suitability of potential surrogate nodes. Recognizing and acting on these statistical nuances ensures a more targeted and efficient response to node failures. Such strategies aim to identify surrogate nodes capable of substituting for failing nodes’ services by building enhanced predictive models. Our resilient framework helps to guide the task requests from failing nodes to the most appropriate surrogate nodes. In this case, the surrogate nodes can use their enhanced models, which can produce equivalent and satisfactory results for the requested tasks. We provide experimental evaluations and comparative assessments with baseline approaches over real datasets. Our results showcase the capability of our framework to maintain the overall performance of predictive analytics under nodes’ failures in edge computing environments.

Abstract

Mobile edge computing (MEC) paradigm has emerged to improve the quality of service & experience of applications deployed in close proximity to end-users. Due to their restricted computational and communication resources, MEC nodes can provide access to a portion of the entire set of services and data gathered. Therefore, there are several obstacles to their management. Keeping track of all the services offered by the MEC nodes is challenging, particularly if their demand rates change over time. Received tasks (such as, analytics queries, classification tasks, and model learning) require services to be invoked in real MEC use-case scenarios, e.g., smart cities. It is not unusual for a node to lack the necessary services or part of them. Undeniably, not all the requested services may be locally available; thus, MEC nodes must deal with the timely and appropriate choice of whether to carry out a service replication (pull action) or tasks offloading (push action) to peer nodes in a MEC environment. In this study, we contribute with a novel time-optimized mechanism based on the optimal stopping theory, which is built on the cost-based decreasing service demand rates evidenced in various service management situations. Our mechanism tries to optimally solve the decision-making dilemma between pull and push action. The experimental findings of our mechanism and its comparative assessment with other methods found in the literature showcase the achieved optimal decisions with respect to certain cost-based objective functions over dynamic service demand rates.
