Resumo Introdução: No âmbito da Unidade Curricular Dissertação 6.ºano da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, que determina a finalização do meu percurso no Mestrado Integrado em Medicina, propus-me investigar sobre a vida de um dos mais notáveis Professores e Investigadores que esta instituição acolheu. Homem de extrema cultura e de vastas paixões descobriu na docência e na investigação o seu caminho. Métodos: Este trabalho foi apoiado em registos da Biblioteca da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto e contou com a colaboração do Arquivo da Universidade do Porto. De realçar todos familiares e discípulos do Professor, que se disponibilizaram para enriquecer, através de dados biográficos, documentos e entrevistas esta dissertação. Resultados: Joaquim de Oliveira Costa Maia nasceu a 17 de julho de 1922, no Bonfim, Porto, e foi um honroso Professor Jubilado da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto. Dono de um percurso escolar pautado pela exigência e excecionalidade, em 1945 licenciou-se pela Faculdade de Medicina do Porto. Contudo, nunca exerceu a profissão de Médico. Foi na Docência e Investigação que traçou o seu percurso. A par da Higiene e Medicina Social, na qual se consagrou referência ímpar, desde cedo percebeu a importância da articulação da Bioestatística com as mais diversas áreas médicas, tal como revelam as suas publicações científicas. Discussão: A genialidade de um Homem e em particular de um Docente, espelha-se na sua capacidade de influenciar e guiar as gerações futuras. Neste aspeto, Joaquim Costa Maia foi um Mestre. Hoje é possível, olhando para o panorama Médico e Investigacional Nacional, encontrar, em posições de extrema relevância, alguns daqueles que orgulhosamente lhe puderam chamar Mestre. Conclusão: Joaquim Maia viveu para a Ciência. Será para sempre relembrado, por todos aqueles que tiveram a grata oportunidade de consigo privar, como um Homem simples, um Professor extraordinário e um Amigo imensurável. Abstract Introduction: As part of the Curricular Unit Dissertation 6.th year of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, which determines the end of my course in the Mestrado Integrado em Medicina, I decided to investigate about the life of one of the most notable Professors and Researchers that this institution had. A man of extreme culture and vast passions found in teaching and research his way. Methods: This work was supported by records of the Library of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and had the precious collaboration of the Archive of the University of Porto. To highlight all the Professor's family members and disciples, who enrich, through biographical data, documents and interviews this dissertation. Results: Joaquim de Oliveira Costa Maia was born on 17 july of 1922, in Bonfim, Porto, and was an honorable Jubilated Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of Porto. Owner of a distinct and exceptional school path, in 1945 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Porto. Yet he never worked as a Doctor. It was in Teaching and Research that he traced his path. In addition to the area of Hygiene and Social Medicine, in which he was consecrated as a unique reference, from an early age he noticed the importance of the articulation of Biostatistics with the most medical areas, as revealed by his scientific publications. Discussion: The genius of a man, and in particular of a Teacher, can be seen in his ability to influence and guide the future generations. In this point, Joaquim Costa Maia was a Master. Today it is possible, looking at the national Medical and Research panorama find, in positions of extreme relevance, some of those who can proudly call him Master. Conclusion: Joaquim Maia lived for Science. He will always be remembered by those who have had the grateful opportunity to know him as a simple Man, an extraordinary Teacher, and an immeasurable Friend.

Conjoined twins are a very rare complication of monochorionic monoamniotic pregnancies, associated with severe mortality and morbidity. Ultrasonography has made early diagnosis of conjoined twins possible, allowing prompt management and counselling of parents. The diagnosis should be suspected when monozygotic fetuses are shown to consistently hold the same fixed position relative to each other. The location and extent of fusion between the twins determine the potential for surgical separation and postnatal survival. The authors report a case of conjoined thoraco-omphalopagus twins, diagnosed by ultrasonography at 10 weeks of gestation. Due to high complexity of fetal fusion, termination of pregnancy was performed upon patient´s request.

Pseudoamniotic band syndrome (PABS) is a rare iatrogenic complication that occurs after invasive procedures in monochorionic twins for treatment of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Selective fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (SFLP) is a commonly performed procedure for the treatment of severe TTTS that may lead to complications such as preterm labor, preterm rupture of membranes, cerebral lesions and fetal death. PABS has been reported to occur in up to 3% of cases of TTTS treated with laser, leading to limb abnormalities. There are no identifiable risk factors and antenatal detection of PABS is rare, but possible. Thus, obstetricians should be aware of this possibility in pregnancies treated by laser therapy for TTTS. The authors report a case of a monochorionic biamniotic twin pregnancy submitted to SFLP for TTTS at 19 weeks of gestation with postnatal diagnosis of PABS, presenting with amputation of a fetal limb.
