A saúde única é o entendimento de que saúde humana, animal e ambiental estão conectadas e são dependentes. O conceito de saúde única, entretanto, ainda não é amplamente disseminado, o que faz com que uma boa parcela da população não tenha acesso a informações sobre o assunto. Pensando nisso, o projeto de extensão em medicina veterinária, ‘Educa Saúde Única’, da Universidade Estadual de Londrina -UEL, definiu como seu objetivo produzir materiais didáticos para serem compartilhados em redes sociais. Observou-se que a população com idade entre 18 e 34 anos foi a que mais consumiu o conteúdo produzido e que o público idoso e infanto-juvenil foi o que teve menos acesso às informações compartilhadas. Entende-se que há uma necessidade de produzir materiais com linguagem simples e atrativa para ampliar o alcance ao público. Para as crianças e adolescentes, recomenda-se a criação de conteúdo interativo, com atividades lúdicas, enquanto para o público mais experiente a criação de grupos e comunidades dentro das redes sociais poderia aumentar sua interação com o conteúdo.

In primates, same-sex and immature sexual behaviour is widespread and can include mounting and genital presentation. These patterns can be observed in multiple social contexts and across all ages, and can serve functions such as appeasement, reconciliation, practice and dominance assertion. In this study, we investigated same-sex and immature sexual behaviour in a group of robust capuchins (Sapajus nigritus) living in an Atlantic forest fragment and urban areas. We predicted that in order to practice sex, sexual behaviour in same-sex dyads and/or dyads that included immatures would resemble the adult heterosexual repertoire for solicitation through courtship displays, mounts and post-copulatory display. We also predicted that immature individuals would engage more frequently than adults in sexual interactions, in order to practice sex. We conducted all-occurrence observations of sexual behaviour in the study group (28 individuals: four adult males, one sub-adult male, eight adult females, eight juveniles and seven infants) from September 2016 to August 2017. Sexual interactions that included at least one immature individual in the dyad and/or occurred between individuals of the same sex were infrequent (N = 52, 0.13 interactions/hour), but much more frequent than heterosexual sexual interactions between adults in the group (N = 4, 0.01 interactions/hour). The same-sex and immature sexual repertoire resembled the described heterosexual patterns for the same species from the literature. Individuals displayed solicitation behaviours in “one-way courtship”, usually followed by a two-way courtship and then mounts, but post-copulatory behaviour was never observed. Except for the alpha male, all age-sex classes engaged in sexual interactions in same-sex dyads or in dyads that included immature individuals. We found no difference in frequency of participation across age classes, however, male-male dyads engaged more frequently in sexual interactions and may be practicing sex and courtship behaviours. Mounts are unlikely to be a form of dominance assertion as the alpha male did not participate, subordinate adult males did not engage in mounts with other subordinate adult males, juveniles mounted adult males and vice versa, and there were mount switches (taking turns as mounter and mountee) regardless of the initial mounter’s age. Contrary to the post-conflict context observed in Cebus, most mounts in this study were preceded by play. Combining our study with additional evidence for the genus, same-sex mounts and mounts that include immatures seem to occur most commonly in affiliative contexts within Sapajus. Sexual behaviour functions in Sapajus require additional investigation, especially among adult males and juveniles of both sexes.

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. The lack of information on biological aspects of small mammals in Brazil fits into two of the main gaps in knowledge of biodiversity – the Linnean and Wallacean shortfall. We performed a broad compilation of studies developed in the Paraná state to consolidate the first list of non-volant small mammal species. Furthermore, we indicate which regions lack information and greater sampling efforts to understand the biological aspects of small mammals. We listed 50 species belonging to 30 genera, five families, and two orders, which represent 37% of marsupials and small rodent species occurring in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Our results indicate that are regions in the Paraná state, such as the southwest, without a single record of small mammals, reveling a Wallacean shortfall of approximately 138.584 km2. Studies on the small-bodied mammal fauna in the state of Paraná are influenced by accessibility bias, concentrated at sites less than 50 kilometers distant from cities, roads, or airports. New research will not only have the challenge of knowing the species richness in regions that are still poorly or hitherto no studied, but also evaluate the state and the population dynamics of the species that persist in densely anthropized areas.

Objetivo: quantificar a abundância e a biomassa de moluscos bentônicos no Lago Igapó I, Londrina, Paraná, Brasil. Material e Métodos: foram realizadas duas coletas no Lago Igapó I, a primeira em junho de 2015 e a segunda em fevereiro de 2016. O substrato (incluindo os moluscos incrustados) foi amostrado utilizando um quadrante com área de 1 m2, onde 10 amostragens foram realizadas entre três pontos distintos do lago. Os moluscos capturados foram anestesiados e eutanasiados por superexposição ao gelo. Posteriormente, o material foi quantificado em abundância (n) e biomassa total (kg), e armazenado em tambores contendo formol 4% tamponado com carbonato de cálcio. Resultados: foram identificadas cinco espécies de moluscos, sendo três não nativas (Limnoperna fortunei, Corbicula fluminea e Melanoides tuberculata), uma nativa (Aylacostoma cf. tenuilabris) e um indivíduo do gênero Pomacea. Em ambas as coletas, L. fortunei compreendeu aproximadamente 90% da abundância e biomassa total. A partir da densidade média de L. fortunei e a área total do Lago Igapó I, estimou-se que a população total de mexilhões-dourados pode chegar a 633 milhões de indivíduos, correspondendo a 638 toneladas de biomassa. Conclusão: é evidente a dominância da espécie invasora L. fortunei no Lago Igapó I, onde esta pode causar diversos efeitos negativos, como alterações no ciclo de nutrientes, redução de espécies nativas, introdução de parasitos, bioacumulação de metais pesados na cadeia trófica, diminuição da qualidade da água para uso humano e obstrução de encanamentos com risco de alagamentos. Desta forma, recomenda-se uma imediata ação de manejo neste ambiente para retirada de indivíduos da espécie, com consequente redução de sua abundância.

O Brasil está entre os 17 países mais megadiversos. Porém, muito dessa biodiversidade está ameaçada e sua valorização pode contribuir com a conservação. Em ambiente escolar, o livro didático é um dos recursos pedagógicos mais utilizados no país, o que nos impulsionou a analisar como a fauna brasileira está neles representada, com recorte para os vertebrados. Os três livros didáticos mais distribuídos pelo PNLD em 2018 foram analisados. Ao contrário do encontrado em análises de livros do ensino fundamental, nos livros de Biologia, 60% das espécies citadas eram de vertebrados que ocorrem no Brasil. A maior inclusão de animais nativos nos livros didáticos pode ser o princípio para o desenvolvimento de uma Educação Ambiental crítica em sala de aula.

The characteristics of successful invaders often include generalist traits that enable adaptation to new environments through plastic responses, including their diet. The use of trophic resources of invasive driftwood catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus of the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil, were studied with diet analysis and stable isotopic niche metrics based on δ15N and δ13C to test differences between a free-from-dam and damming population, and between wet and dry season. Stomach content analyses revealed significant differences between the populations. The diet of the riverine free-flowing river population was macroinvertebrate dominated, with Coleoptera and Lepidoptera prominent. In the damming population, diet was largely plant based, although Coleoptera was also prominent. Trophic niche breadth comparisons revealed a larger niche in the free-from-dam population versus the damming population that was independent of season. In both sites had dietary differences between the wet and dry season according to stomach contents analyses, although these were less prominent according to stable isotope metrics. Therefore, the diet of this invader is relatively general and plastic, enabling their exploitation of the varying availability of food resources between free-from-dam and damming river sections, and between wet and dry season.

Until now no study has used a defaunation index to quantify the decline of Neotropical freshwater fishes in environments fragmented by dams and reservoirs. So, we applied this index to 143 native fish in five reservoirs in the Lower Paranapanema River, that is situated in one of the Brazilian aquatic environments most impacted by anthropic degradation. Fish species were classified according to their functional groups, which were selected according to the biological characteristics that may reflect in defaunation events. The biggest reservoir in area with more tributaries and forest cover showed lowest defaunation index. The functional groups of fishes more affected by defaunation included species characterized by periphytivores, invertivores and algivores, non-migratory habit, with external fertilization, and parental care. Although reservoirs have different characteristics, this method can be tested in any other hydrographic basin. The results suggested continued conservation efforts to preserve the integrity of tributaries and the native fishes in reservoirs and pointed out the importance of maintaining native vegetation cover and fish restocking programs in the reservoirs with the highest defaunation values. Our finding can be use as the first data source for future studies using this defaunation index. Resumo Até o momento nenhum estudo utilizou um índice de defaunação para quantificar o declínio de peixes neotropicais de água doce em ambientes fragmentados por barragens e reservatórios. Dessa forma, testamos esse índice em 143 espécies nativas em cinco reservatórios do baixo rio Paranapanema, que está localizado em um dos ambientes aquáticos brasileiros mais impactados pela degradação antrópica. As espécies de peixes foram classificadas de acordo com seus grupos funcionais selecionados de acordo com as características biológicas que podem influenciar nos eventos de defaunação. O maior reservatório em área, com mais tributários e maior cobertura florestal apresentou menor índice de defaunação. Os grupos funcionais mais afetados pela defaunação incluíram espécies caracterizadas por hábito alimentar perifitívoro, invertívoro e algívoro, hábito não migratório, com fertilização externa e cuidado parental. Embora os reservatórios tenham características diferentes, esse método pode ser testado em qualquer outra bacia hidrográfica. Os resultados sugerem esforços contínuos para preservar a integridade dos tributários e dos peixes nativos nos reservatórios e apontam a importância de manter a cobertura vegetal nativa e programas de estocagem nos reservatórios com maiores valores de defaunação. Nossos dados podem ser utilizados como a primeira base de dados para futuros estudos que utilizem o índice de defaunação.

Aim This study investigated whether seasonal variations have an effect on diet composition of Serrapinnus notomelas in a marginal lagoon located under the area of influence of the Tibagi River, Upper Paraná Basin. Methods Samples were carried out monthly between February 2017 and January 2018, and fish specimens were caught with two sieves (2 mm mesh). The volumetric and occurrence method were used to quantify stomach contents. Results A total of 358 stomachs had their contents analyzed. The autochthonous resources were dominant in the diet of S. notomelas in all seasons, with a predominance of algae, detritus and Tecamebas. Meanwhile, plant material was the most abundant allochthonous resource in the diet. Diet composition showed significant differences between all seasons, while in the autumn and summer seasons, individuals showed greater trophic niche breadth, respectively. Conclusions Our results show the great importance of autochthonous resources for the maintenance of the S. notomelas population, and that seasonality can influence the trophic composition in the species' diet. We observed difference in the diet during the seasons and that during autumn and summer, individuals presented a greater breadth of the trophic niche. Thus, our results corroborate with knowledge to the preservation of small fish species, which are fundamental for the trophic network in ecosystems. Resumo: Objetivo Este estudo investigou se variações sazonais induzem mudança na composição da dieta de Serrapinnus notomelas em uma lagoa marginal situada sob a área de influência do rio Tibagi, Bacia do Alto Paraná. Métodos As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente de fevereiro de 2017 a janeiro de 2018, e os exemplares foram capturados com duas peneiras (malha de 2 mm). O método volumétrico e de ocorrência foram usados para quantificar o conteúdo estomacal. Resultados Um total de 358 estômagos tiveram os seus conteúdos analisados. Os recursos autóctones foram dominantes na dieta de S. notomelas em todas as estações, com predominância de algas, detritos e Tecamebas. Vegetais foram os recursos alóctones mais abundante na dieta. A composição da dieta apresentou diferenças significativas entre todas as estações, e nas estações do outono e verão os indivíduos apresentaram maior amplitude de nicho trófico, respectivamente. Conclusões Nossos resultados mostram a grande importância dos recursos autóctones para a manutenção da população de S. notomelas, e que a sazonalidade pode influenciar a composição trófica na dieta da espécie. Observamos diferenças na dieta durante as estações, e que durante o outono e verão, os indivíduos apresentaram uma maior amplitude do nicho trófico. Assim, nossos resultados corroboram com informações para a preservação das espécies de pequeno porte, fundamentais para a rede trófica nos ecossistemas.

O aquarismo é um hobby praticado mundialmente com aumento de popularidade no Brasil nas últimas décadas. A soltura de peixes ornamentais em ambientes naturais é equivocada, sendo considerada introdução de espécies e crime ambiental. Dessa maneira, objetivou-se verificar a existência de registros de solturas disponíveis na web, na mídia social Youtube™ no Brasil. A busca por vídeos com situações de soltura ou descarte foi realizada entre julho e dezembro do ano de 2018, totalizando-se 616 horas de busca. Como resultado, obteve-se 48 registros de solturas, sendo as mais incidentes as regiões do Sudeste, Nordeste e Sul. São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo e Rio de Janeiro foram os Estados com maior número de registros. Registrou-se 33 táxons de peixes (18 gêneros e 15 espécies) e dois híbridos, sendo muitas delas espécies invasoras. A maioria dos praticantes não tem conhecimento sobre a ilegalidade do ato ou a possibilidade de impacto ambiental. O perigo das solturas ornamentais quanto à oportunidade de invasão biológica, a pressão de propágulo empregada e os conceitos equivocados sobre ecologia abordados nos vídeos são discutidos. Sugere-se a conscientização dos aquaristas e maior controle sobre o hobby, sendo as redes e mídias sociais uma nova ferramenta para os órgãos fiscalizadores detectarem distúrbios que possam prejudicar os ambientes naturais.

Morcegos são conhecidos por sua importância na regulação dos ecossistemas e no seu envolvimento na polinização e na dispersão de sementes. Espécies de morcegos fitófagos como, por exemplo, Artibeus lituratus ocupam com frequência áreas alteradas ou até mesmo regiões urbanas. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a dieta de A. lituratus no campus da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, um fragmento florestal com alta interferência antrópica. Foram realizadas quatro coletas mensais, entre outubro de 2012 e setembro de 2013, utilizando quatro redes de neblina por noite. Os animais foram identificados em campo e acondicionados em sacos de algodão por 30 minutos a fim de serem obtidas amostras de fezes para a análise de sua dieta. Foram coletados 86 indivíduos, que forneceram 42 amostras fecais. Os resultados indicam que a dieta de A. lituratus é composta principalmente por frutos de Cecropiaceae e Moraceae. A amplitude de nicho trófico foi maior nos meses de março, agosto e setembro de 2013, porém não ocorreram diferenças significativas na dieta entre as estações do ano (H = 0,3002, p = 0,96). A preferência por espécies pioneiras na dieta de A. lituratus pode ser um indicativo do seu importante papel na restauração de fragmentos florestais mesmo em ambientes urbanos.

O impacto de espécies exóticas sobre a fauna nativa está entre as maiores ameaças à biodiversidade global. O cão doméstico é considerado invasor quando acessa áreas naturais, podendo sobreviver independentemente da intervenção humana. No Brasil há poucos estudos com informações sobre o impacto da predação ou caça de cães sobre a fauna silvestre. Relatamos cinco eventos de predação de mamíferos silvestres por cães domésticos em fragmentos da Mata Atlântica na região norte do estado do Paraná, Brasil. Entre junho e setembro de 2018, espécimes de Didelphis albiventris (gambá-de-orelha-branca), Dasypus novemcinctus (tatu-galinha), Sapajus nigritus (macaco-prego) e Eira barbara (irara) foram abatidos por cão doméstico tanto em fragmentos de área urbana quanto de rural. Cães domésticos oferecem riscos à fauna silvestre inclusive àquelas espécies ameaçadas de extinção, sendo de extrema urgência ações diversificadas para eliminar e reduzir o acesso desses animais a fragmentos florestais. Nossos dados são um indicativo do impacto de cães domésticos sobre a fauna silvestre da Mata Atlântica no norte do estado do Paraná e podem dar suporte para medidas de controle, contenção e erradicação, obtendo-se assim a mitigação do impacto dos cães domésticos.

The Upper Paraná River basin is among the most fragmented watersheds in the world. The Congonhas River belongs to this drainage system, which has its mouth in the Capivara Reservoir and can be considered the largest tributary free-from-dam, becoming important for the maintenance of fish species richness. In order to know more about the species present in this tributary, we aimed to provide an inventory of fish fauna of the Congonhas River and reproductive strategies to determine whether the river is used by migratory species and whether there is a longitudinal variation in the fish assembly. These findings will provide subsidies to contribute to the implementation of policies to protect biodiversity. Samplings occurred in the upper, middle and lower stretches of the Congonhas River during four periods between 1991 and 2011. Fishes were captured using gill nets from 2 to 14 cm mesh sizes between opposite knots and cast nets, identified and categorized according to their reproductive strategies. A total of 4,640 individuals belonging to 63 species, of which 79.4% consisted of Characiformes and Siluriformes were captured. Furthermore, 14% of fish were long-distance migratory species (e.g., Piaractus mesopotamicus, Megaleporinus obtusidens, Prochilodus lineatus, Salminus brasiliensis, Pinirampus pirinampu, and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans). In addition, there was an increase in the fish species richness from upstream to downstream. Management actions such as prohibition of fishing, rehabilitation of riparian vegetation, and protection of the basin against dam construction will reduce anthropogenic impacts on the ecosystem. The Congonhas River highlights the importance of preserving lotic environmental for the conservation of migratory and non-migratory Neotropical fish diversity into a heavily modified watershed.

We provide herein reports of plastic ingestion by members of the ichthyofauna in the Paraíba do Sul River basin. Our study area comprised the Simplício Hydroelectric Complex, located in the middle section of the Paraíba do Sul River. Fish specimens were caught with gillnets and the stomach contents examined using a stereomicroscope and, when necessary, a compound microscope. Out of a total of 218 individual stomachs from 19 species examined, six individuals belonging to five species contained plastic in their stomachs. The synthetic polymers were determined to be polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Three of the species had not previously been reported to consume plastic in natural ecosystems. In addition, at least three of the five species are commercially valuable. Our work, together with other published records, raises to 46 the number of Brazilian freshwater fish species known to have ingested plastic particles. Implementation of policies at the river basin level are needed to avoid plastic pollution in the Paraíba do Sul and tributaries in the southeastern Brazil. A perda de habitat é considera a principal ameaça à sobrevivência do lobo-guará (Chrysocyon brachyurus), o maior caní­deo da América do Sul. Embora essa espécie fosse amplamente distribuí­da no passado, atualmente é considera ameaçada de extinção em todo território brasileiro. No estado do Paraná são escassas as informações sobre os locais de ocorrência do lobo-guará, sendo este um agravante para a elaboração de medidas assertivas de conservação da espécie. No presente estudo apresentamos o primeiro registro de C. brachyurus para a mesorregião Norte Pioneiro paranaense. Para confirmação desta informação e com o intuito de gerar uma lista com ocorrências do lobo-guará no estado do Paraná, realizamos uma busca sistemática na literatura especializada. Dentre as ocorrências observadas para o estado, cinco foram realizadas em unidades de conservação, três em perí­metro urbano e duas consequências de atropelamento em rodovias. Os dados aqui apresentados poderão servir como base para novos estudos que almejam compreender a distribuição atual e como o lobo-guará tem se ajustado frente as alterações no seu habitat.

The Paranapanema River is an important, extensively explored tributary of the Upper Paraná River basin. The fish fauna of the Paranapanema River has been investigated since the 1990s; however, no study has characterized the richness of fish species throughout the basin, including the main channel of the river, marginal lagoons, its tributaries, and sub-tributaries. Thus, we performed a review with 90 independent studies conducted at the upper, middle, and lower sections of the basin. We recorded 225 species, of which 165 were native, and 60 were non-native. We found that 77% of the species within the basin are composed by Siluriformes and Characiformes. Cichliformes had a significant number of non-native species established in impoundment sections of the basin. Incidence-Based Estimators (Bootstrap and Chao 2) demonstrated that the richness of native species is still underestimated. Some native (e.g., Hypostomus ancistroides) and non-native species (e.g., Plagioscion squamosissimus) are widely distributed in the basin, while others had a more restricted distribution. Among the registered species, the family Bryconidae had the highest number of representatives with threatened conservation status. In addition, we observed that the Capivara Reservoir and its tributaries were the most sampled regions, with the majority of studies performed in the Lower Paranapanema basin. The species richness recorded in large tributaries, such as Tibagi, Cinzas, Congonhas, and Pirapó rivers is critical for maintaining the fish fauna in the Paranapanema River. Our contribution may be used to support management actions and conservation strategies, as well as to indicate regions in the basin that need to be better inventoried. Resumo: O rio Paranapanema é um importante tributário, amplamente explorado da bacia do Alto rio Paraná. A fauna de peixes do rio Paranapanema vem sendo investigada desde a década de 1990; no entanto, nenhum estudo caracterizou a riqueza de espécies de peixes em toda a bacia, incluindo o canal principal do rio, lagoas marginais, seus tributários e sub-tributários. Assim, realizamos uma revisão com 90 estudos independentes conduzidos nas regiões superior, média e inferior da bacia. Foram registradas 225 espécies, das quais 165 eram nativas e 60 eram não nativas. Verificamos que 77% das espécies dentro da bacia são compostas por Siluriformes e Characiformes. Cichliformes apresentou um número significativo de espécies não nativas estabelecidas em áreas de represamento da bacia. Estimadores de riqueza baseados em incidência (Bootstrap e Chao 2) demonstraram que a riqueza de espécies nativas ainda é subestimada. Algumas espécies nativas (e.g., Hypostomus ancistroides) e não nativas (e.g., Plagioscion squamosissimus) estão amplamente distribuídas na bacia, enquanto outras tem sua distribuição mais restrita. Entre as espécies registradas, a família Bryconidae obteve o maior número de representantes com status de conservação ameaçado. Além disso, observamos que o reservatório de Capivara e seus afluentes foram as regiões mais amostradas, sendo a maioria dos estudos realizados na bacia do baixo Paranapanema. A riqueza de espécies registrada em grandes afluentes, como os rios Tibagi, Cinzas, Congonhas e Pirapó, é fundamental para a manutenção da ictiofauna no rio Paranapanema. Nossa contribuição pode ser usada para apoiar ações de manejo e estratégias de conservação, bem como para indicar regiões na bacia que precisam ser melhor inventariadas.

This study describes the invasion of the upper Parana River basin by Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii based on a literature review and field samples. Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii has been reported in 42 localities throughout the upper Parana River basin, including the Tiete, Paranapanema, Parana, Grande and Aguapei rivers. The ascent of P. ambrosettii after the inundation of the Sete Quedas Falls on the Parana River and the release of individuals by aquarium hobbyists were the primary drivers of this invasion.

The aim of this study is to report the presence of a three non-native hybrid long-whiskered catfishes (family Pimelodidae) in the Upper Parana River basin, Brazil. Genetic analyses demonstrated that the three presumptive hybrids were a result of the crossbreeding of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (central Amazonas River basin and Lower Parana River) and Leiarius marmoratus (Amazonas, Essequibo and Orinoco rivers), producing a hybrid commonly known in Brazil as cachandia. The potential threat to biodiversity, due to possible genetic contamination, competition and predation of wild stocks, of such artificially produced hybrid fishes is discussed.

Understanding the pathways and impacts of non-native species is important for helping prevent new introductions and invasions. This is frequently challenging in regions where human activities continue to promote new introductions, such as in Brazil, where aquaculture and sport fishing are mainly dependent on non-native fishes. Here, the non-native fish diversity of the Paranapanema River basin of the Upper Parana River ecoregion, Brazil, was quantified fully for the first time. This river has been subject to considerable alteration through hydroelectric dam construction and concomitant development of aquaculture and sport fishing. Through compilation of a non-native fish inventory by literature review, with complementary records from recent field studies, analyses were completed on the timings of introduction, and the taxonomy, origin and introduction vectors of the non-native fishes. A total of 47 non-native fishes are now present across the basin. Of these, 24 invaded from the Lower Parana River following construction of Itaipu Dam that connected previously unconnected fish assemblages. Activities including fish stocking, aquaculture and sport angling continue to result in new introductions. Discounting Itaipu invasions, the introduction rate between 1950 and 2014 was approximately one new introduction every 3 years. Introduced fish were mainly of the Cichlidae and Characidae families; most species were from other South American ecoregions, but fishes of African, Asian, North American and Central American origin were also present. These introductions have substantially modified the river’s fish fauna; when coupled with altered lentic conditions caused by impoundment, this suggests that the river’s native fishes are increasingly threatened.

Bats are known for their importance in regulating ecosystems, where they are involved in pollination and seed dispersal. Species of phytophagous bats such as Artibeus lituratus often occupy altered areas or even urban regions. The aim of this study was to investigate the diet of A. lituratus on the campus of the State University of Londrina, in a forest fragment with high anthropogenic influence. Four monthly collections were carried out between October 2012 and September 2013 using four mist nets per night. The animals were identified in the field and placed in cotton bags for half an hour to obtain fecal samples for diet analysis. A total of 86 individuals were collected, which provided 42 fecal samples. The results indicated that the diet of A. lituratus is composed mainly of Cecropiaceae and Moraceae fruits. The trophic niche breadth (B’) was higher in March, August and September 2013, but there were no significant differences in diet between the seasons (H = 0.3002, p = 0.96). The preference for pioneer species in the diet of A. lituratus may be indicative of their important role in the restoration of forest fragments, even in urban environments. Espécies de morcegos fitófagos como, por exemplo, Artibeus lituratus ocupam com frequência áreas alteradas ou até mesmo regiões urbanas. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a dieta de A. lituratus no campus da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, um fragmento florestal com alta interferência antrópica. Foram realizadas quatro coletas mensais, entre outubro de 2012 e setembro de 2013, utilizando quatro redes de neblina por noite. Os animais foram identificados em campo e acondicionados em sacos de algodão por 30 minutos a fim de serem obtidas amostras de fezes para a análise de sua dieta. Foram coletados 86 indivíduos, que forneceram 42 amostras fecais. Os resultados indicam que a dieta de A. lituratus é composta principalmente por frutos de Cecropiaceae e Moraceae. A amplitude de nicho trófico foi maior nos meses de março, agosto e setembro de 2013, porém não ocorreram diferenças significativas na dieta entre as estações do ano (H = 0,3002, p = 0,96). A preferência por espécies pioneiras na dieta de A. lituratus pode ser um indicativo do seu importante papel na restauração de fragmentos florestais mesmo em ambientes urbanos.

This paper focuses on to evaluate the importance of a free stretches upstream of a Neotropical reservoir for the maintenance of Schizodon intermedius populations, a medium size migratory species and important fisheries resources. Quarterly samplings were carried out in 8 sampling sites, distributed in Jurumirim Reservoir and two tributaries upstream reservoir. Reproductive, populational and feeding strategies were used to evaluate the importance of each sample area in the biological cycle of this species. Results showed that S. intermedius makes different uses of the sites. In the rainy season, individuals in the lower areas presented higher condition factor and average repletion degree of stomach, assuming that are used for growth and feeding and; in the upper areas, higher size and GSi values, suggesting that are reproductive area. We conclude that Schizodon intermedius uses lentic areas to gain energy in dry season, and in the rainy season, uses this energy to migrate to lotic stretches to reproduction. The stretches upstream free of dam are essential for this migratory species maintain viable populations in an environment impaired by dams.

Estudos sobre biologia reprodutiva podem fornecer explicações sobre o sucesso na colonização de novas áreas, dado que características biológicas associadas às espécies invasoras podem conferir vantagem na invasão. Objetivamos avaliar variações de características reprodutivas de peixes invasores em lagoas e rios livres de barragens. Foram estudadas populações deSerrasalmus marginatus,Loricariichthys platymetopon,Ossancora eigenmanni,Auchenipterus osteomystaxeTrachelyopterus galeatusem habitat lêntico (Lagoas 1 e 2) e lótico (rios Pirapozinho e Anhumas) durante as estações seca e chuvosa. Fêmeas predominaram na maioria das populações (χ2, α < 0,05). Fêmeas deL. platymetoponeT. galeatusapresentaram maior índice gonadossomático durante a estação chuvosa no rio Anhumas e na Lagoa 2, respectivamente (teste de Mann-Whitney, α < 0,05). Populações deS. marginatus,L. platymetopon,O. eigenmannieT. galeatusapresentaram atividade reprodutiva muito intensa na Lagoa 1.Trachelyopterus galeatusapresentou atividade reprodutiva muito intensa nas duas lagoas e no rio Pirapozinho. Portanto, são necessárias ações que controlem as populações e minimizem seus impactos.

is a large semi-aquatic rodent ranked as one of the 100 most invasive species in the world. In Brazil, few ecological studies have been proposed to understand the relationship of this species with the environment. To date, drivers that facilitate its establishment in new areas remain unknown. However, it is generally accepted that the natural distribution of this species is limited to far southern Brazil. The present study aimed to understand the geographic distribution of M. coypus and indicate areas of greater risk of establishment based on bioclimatic predictors and a surveillance map. We observed that M. coypus suitability and risk assessment areas are restricted to the southeastern and southern regions of Brazil and that anthropogenic landscape modifications are an adequate variable to explain the occurrence of the species. Due to the environmental impacts caused by this species, monitoring in environments where it has been introduced is required. The model used herein presented efficient applicability and fit for Brazil. Preventive actions and the management of M. coypus in predicted regions prior to its establishment are recommended.

Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos a longo prazo de um antigo reservatório (50 anos) sobre a dinâmica trófica da ictiofauna. A dieta de 20 espécies de peixes foi analisada, identificando 37 itens alimentares pertencentes a seis categorias tróficas, que possibilitaram a criação de seis grupos tróficos. Os resultados aqui encontrados sugerem que, ao longo da formação de um reservatório, a estrutura trófica das assembleias de peixes tende a atingir a homeostase trófica, na qual a comunidade de peixes será capaz de explorar os recursos alimentares mais disponíveis sendo mantidos principalmente pelos itens colocados nas categorias matéria orgânica e fragmentos de peixes e vegetais. ABSTRACT Dams are considered an important source of modification upon the structure of aquatic communities and their reflexes are diverse on the fish fauna. Although there are several hydroelectric power plants in Brazil, the long-term effects on feeding activity of ichthyofauna are unknown. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of an old reservoir (fifty years) on the trophic dynamics of fish fauna. The diet of 20 fish species was analyzed, identifying 37 food items belonging to six trophic categories, which enable to create six trophic groups. The results found here suggests that throughout the creation of a reservoir, the trophic structure of the fish assemblages tend to reach trophic homeostasis, in which the fish community will be capable of exploring the most available food resources being maintained primarily by the items placed in the categories organic matter and fragments of fish and vegetal. Non-native species are a major driver of biodiversity loss. Aquaculture activities play a key role in introductions, including the escape of fishes from fish farm facilities. Here, the impact of flooding due to El Niño rains in 2015/2016 in the Lower and Middle Paranapanema River basin, southern Brazil, was investigated by evaluating fish escapes from 12 fish farms. The flooding resulted in the escape of approximately 1.14 million fishes into the river, encompassing 21 species and three hybrids. Non-native species were the most abundant escapees, especially Oreochromisniloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Coptodonrendalli (Boulenger, 1897) (96% of all fish). Only seven native fishes were in the escapee fauna, comprising 1% of all fish. Large floods, coupled with inadequate biosecurity, thus resulted in considerable inputs of non-native fish into this already invaded system.

Several studies of small watersheds of in the Upper Paraná River basin are currently available. Howev-er, the number and extent of its tributary streams still pose a challenge to enhancing current knowledge of their ichthyofauna. This study aimed to survey the fish fauna of three streams of the Lower Paranapanema River basin, state of Paraná, Brazil (Capim, Tenente and Centenário streams). The sampling included 3,167 specimens belonging to five orders, 17 families and 56 species. The streams presented differences in species richness (Centenário Stream: 41 species; Tenente Stream: 33 species; Capim Stream: 30 species). Two species occurred at all collection sites (Astyanax bockmanni and Hypostomus ancistroides). Nine non-native species were recorded, four of them found exclusive-ly in the Centenário Stream.

Invasive species always endanger biodiversity because of their competing efficiency for food resources, high reproduction, and dispersion capacity. The aim of this study is to report the first record of 10 specimens of a small-sized primate, Callithrix penicillata, introduced in an Atlantic Rainforest fragment, Northern Paraná, Brazil. Due to their generalist feeding habit, behavior flexibility and parental care, the species adapted itself to different habitat and types of food. The monitoring of the group should be enhanced since the characteristics of the environment which provides them with food and shelter, coupled to the forced placement of the specimens in the fragments, may establish the species in the area.

Studies describing the diet of fish are important to determine trophic chain relationships, habitat occupation, trophic niches, and to define food habits of species. To describe the diet of Rhinodoras dorbignyi, six collections were made bimonthly in the upper Paranapanema River, SP, from April 2010 to February 2011. Of the 63 samples collected, 30 had stomach content. The diet of this species was determined using two methods: (i) alimentary index (AI%) and (ii) graphical analysis of feeding strategy. Based on the results, R. dorbignyi is an insectivorous species and autochthonous items play an important role in the diet of this species. Estudos sobre caracterização da dieta de peixes representam um instrumento que permite determinar relações nas cadeias tróficas, definir hábitos alimentares e a ocupação de habitats e determinar os nichos tróficos das espécies. Para a caracterização da dieta de Rhinodoras dorbignyi, foram realizadas seis coletas bimestrais no alto rio Paranapanema, SP, durante o período de abril de 2010 a fevereiro de 2011. Dos 63 indivíduos capturados, 30 apresentaram algum conteúdo no estômago, sendo utilizados neste estudo. A dieta desta espécie foi determinada utilizando de dois métodos: (i) Índice Alimentar (%IAi); (ii) e a interpretação gráfica da estratégia alimentar. A partir dos resultados obtidos é possível inferir que R. dorbignyi é uma espécie insetívora, sendo que itens de origem autóctone apresentam grande contribuição em sua dieta.

Summary Length–weight relationships were estimated for six fish species occurring in direct tributaries of the Lower Paranapanema River Basin. Data is described for the first time for five species and new measurements are provided for one species in the FishBase database. Studies of fish diversity are critical for species management and conservation, especially in this basin, which has suffered from many anthropical impacts.

Os resultados das análisesde conteúdo estomacal foram expressos em frequência de ocorrência e método gravimétrico, combinados no Índice Alimentar (IAi). As 20 espécies analisadas consumiram um total de 52 itens, agrupados em 10 categorias alimentares: insetos aquáticos, insetos terrestres, crustáceos, peixes, macroinvertebrados, microcrustáceos, algas, material vegetal, detrito/sedimento e escamas. Os insetos aquáticos (principalmente Chironomidae, Odonata e Ephemeroptera) foram o recurso alimentar mais comum na dieta, consumido por 18 espécies. A análise da dieta da comunidade (espécies agrupadas) revelou que a categoria alimentar dominante foi insetos aquáticos (IAi = 77.6%), seguida pelos crustáceos (IAi = 7.1%). Quatro guildas tróficas foram identificadas pela análise de agrupamento (distância de Pearson): insetívoros (10 espécies), onívoros (4 espécies), detritívoros (3 espécies) e piscívoros/carcinófagos (3 espécies). Fishes were collected in two stretches of the reservoir: Santa Bárbara (14 samples) and Bonito (two samples) between September 2002 and March 2004, using gill and seining nets. The results of stomach contents analysis were expressed with the frequency of occurrence and gravimetric method, combined in the Alimentary Index (AI). The 20 species studied consumed 52 food items, grouped in 10 food categories: aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, crustaceans, fish, macroinvertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, vegetal matter, detritus/sediment and scales. The aquatic insects (mainly Chironomidae, Odonata and Ephemeroptera) were the most common food resources, consumed by 18 species. The diet composition of the community (species grouped) indicated that the dominant food category in the diet of fishes was aquatic insects (AI = 77.6%), followed by crustaceans (AI = 7.1%). Four trophic guilds were identified according a cluster analysis (Pearson distance): insectivorous (10 species), omnivorous (4 species), detritivorous (3 species) and piscivorous/carcinophagous (3 species). Despite the highest number of species, the insectivorous guild was responsible for more than 80% in captures in number and biomass (CPUEn and CPUEb). The low values of niche breadth presented by all species, along with the low values of diet overlap between species pairs indicate a high degree of food resources partitioning among species. The aquatic insects, despite being the main food resource of insectivorous fishes, also complemented the diet of other species, which demonstrate the importance of this food resource for the fish community, sustaining a high diversity, abundance and biomass of fishes. The Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus , and the Congo Tilapia, Tilapia rendalli , are important members of the African cichlids, and have been introduced to many Brazilian lakes and reservoirs. These species exhibit a large feeding flexibility and may modify their habits during their growth. In the Barra Bonita reservoir, these species are well adapted, representing more than 80% of fish. This study aimed to analyze ontogenetic variation with regard to the diet of these species in this important reservoir. Samples were taken monthly, from March 2007 to February 2008, in Anhembi, Sao Paulo State. Both species were analyzed by grouping individuals according to size classes. The coexistence of these species was observed in this environment, to which fish were introduced, as well as discreet differences in diet, being that Oreochromis niloticus was considered as an detritivorous, since the detritus was constant in the diet of almost all size classes, and presents some changes in its diet according to the different size classes. While T. rendalli may was defined as herbivorous, and the contribution of food resources to the diet of T. rendalli seems to be different from that of O. niloticus along the size classes.

Fish samplings were performed monthly between September/2002 and August/2003, using gill nets with different mesh sizes. Females of all species have larger standard lengths than males (Mann-Whitney, p < 0.0001), and are more frequent in superior size classes (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, p < 0.0001). All populations presented isometric growth, but differences between males and females were observed. Only P. squamosissimus presented a gender ratio different from 1:1, with a higher proportion of males (1:2, X2, p < 0.05). The onset of gonadal maturation occurs at 15 cm in P. squamosissimus, 9 cm in S. maculatus and at 8.9 cm in A. altiparanae. In all species populations, the adults predominate over juveniles. The allometric condition factor (K) of P. squamosissimus and S. maculatus presented higher values in the periods from March-May and June-August, and A. altiparanae in the period from March-May (Kruskal-Wallis, p < 0.05). These results indicate that the populations successfully exploit the lentic environment, and present life cycle tactics adapted to their particular means of environment occupation. De acordo com a hipótese ‘Treinando para o inesperado’, animais engajam em auto desvantagem durante a brincadeira, prejudicando ativamente a sua locomoção, posição e sentidos. Nessas situações, os indivíduos aprendem como recuperar o controle, desenvolvendo versatilidade de movimentos e habilidades emocionais. Além disso, indivíduos mais jovens engajariam em mais auto desvantagem durante a brincadeira locomotora-rotacional enquanto que indivíduos mais velhos durante a brincadeira social. Visando testar essa premissa de auto desvantagem durante a ontogenia e verificar a ‘Maior imprevisibilidade da brincadeira com objeto em indivíduos jovens’, sequências comportamentais de brincadeira geral, locomotora-rotacional, com objeto e social foram amostradas em um grupo de macacos-prego-preto (Sapajus nigritus) que habitam um fragmento urbano de Mata Atlântica no Brasil. Sequências de brincadeira geral (N = 18), com objeto (N = 10), locomotora-rotacional (N = 14) e social (N = 23) foram submetidas à análise multivariada ‘Detecção e análise de T-patterns’. A imprevisibilidade da estrutura - baseada na variabilidade, exageração e repetibilidade - foi comparada entre indivíduos jovens e velhos. Indivíduos jovens engajaram em mais auto desvantagem durante a brincadeira locomotora-rotacional, no entanto, diferenças na imprevisibilidade durante a brincadeira social não foram observadas entre as classes etárias. A hipótese ‘Maior imprevisibilidade da brincadeira com objeto em indivíduos jovens’ foi apoiada. Assim como outras espécies de primatas que dependem de manipulação extrativa durante o forrageio, indivíduos jovens engajaram em mais comportamentos de manipulação durante a brincadeira e esses padrões foram similares aos observados tardiamente na ontogenia durante a manipulação funcional. According to the ‘Training for the unexpected’ hypothesis, animals engage in self-handicapping during play, actively impairing their locomotion, position and senses. In these situations, individuals learn how to regain control, developing versatility of movements and emotional abilities. Also, younger individuals would engage in more self-handicapping during locomotor-rotational play while older individuals during social play. In order to test this premise of self-handicapping during the ontogeny and verify whether there is a ‘Higher unpredictability of object play among young individuals’, we sampled behavioral sequences of general, locomotor-rotational, object and social play in a wild group of black-horned capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus) living in an Atlantic Forest urban fragment in Brazil. Play sequences for general (N = 18), object (N = 10), locomotor-rotational (N = 14) and social play (N = 23) were submitted to the multivariate ‘T-pattern detection and analysis’. We compared the unpredictability of the structure - based on the variability, exaggeration and repeatability - between young and old individuals. Young individuals engaged in more self-handicapping during locomotor-rotational play, however, we observed no differences in social play unpredictability between age classes. We supported the ‘Higher unpredictability of object play among young individuals’ hypothesis. Such as other primate species that rely on extractive manipulation during foraging, young individuals engaged in more manipulation behaviors during play, and these patterns were similar to those observed in functional manipulation later on the ontogeny.

O estabelecimento de competição intragrupo pode determinar padrões comportamentais nas interações sociais de primatas, definindo a oferta e demanda por interações de acordo com a teoria do mercado biológico. As fêmeas são comumente filopátricas, permanecendo no grupo natal e podendo estabelecer relações hierárquicas lineares e estáveis de acordo com o regime de competição que estas estão inseridas. Dessa maneira ao estudar a sociabilidade das fêmeas, também é possível acessar a relação destas com o meio ambiente e a distribuição de recurso alimentar – que pode ser impactada pela fragmentação e contato com o humano. Havendo maior competição por recursos, o poder de coerção de indivíduos dominantes dirige o ganho de grooming para receptores dominantes. Diante disso, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o efeito de variáveis individuais na expressão de grooming em fêmeas adultas de macacos-prego-pretos (Sapajus nigritus) de fragmento urbano. Foi testada a hipótese de que os dominantes seriam maior alvo de grooming sob o pressuposto da oferta de benefícios associados ao ranking em troca de grooming, a hipótese up the hierarchy (UTH). Foram registrados comportamentos sociais afiliativos (grooming), agonísticos (agressões e ameaças) e eventos de tolerância no contexto alimentar através do método todas as ocorrências. Foram construídos modelos lineares generalizados (GLM) para checagem do efeito das variáveis sexo, idade, paridade de ranking e status de dominância do groomer sobre as taxas de grooming. A hipótese foi rejeitada com a variação significativa nas taxas de grooming sendo representada por condições onde o groomer era dominante, e não subordinado. Além da rejeição do pressuposto base para UTH, pois não houve relação entre os episódios de grooming recebidos e a tolerância cedida. A população apresenta distribuição contrária a proposta por UTH com o grooming sendo mais frequentemente distribuído por groomers dominantes em receptores subordinados, ou similares em relação a classe sexoetária. Com o menor poder de coerção do dominante em relação ao subordinado, é possível que o mercado social das interações das fêmeas do grupo estudo atribua maior valor social a indivíduos de mesmo sexo e idade em detrimento de indivíduos dominantes. Esta condição pode estar associada ao menor regime de competição e consequente menor monopolização de recursos que o grupo enfrenta devido a fragmentação e urbanização do habitat. The establishment of intragroup competition can determine behavioral patterns in primate social interactions, defining supply and demand for interactions according to the biological market theory. Females are commonly philopatric, remaining in the natal group and being able to establish linear and stable hierarchical relationships according to the competition in their group. When studying the sociability of females, it is also possible to access their relationship with the environment and the distribution of food resources – which can be impacted by fragmentation and human contact. With greater competition for resources, the coercive power of dominant individuals directs grooming receiving towards dominant recipients. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the effect of individual variables on the expression of grooming in adult females of black horned capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus) from an urban fragment. The hypothesis that the dominants would be the greatest target of grooming was tested under the assumption of the exchange of rank-related benefits for grooming, the up the hierarchy (UTH) hypothesis. Affiliative (grooming), agonistic (aggression and threats) social behaviors and tolerance events in the feeding context were recorded using the “all occurrences” method. Generalized linear models (GLM) were constructed to assess the effect of sex, age, ranking parity and groomer dominance status on grooming rates. The hypothesis was rejected with the significant variation in grooming rates being represented by conditions where the groomer was dominant rather than subordinate. In addition to the rejection of the basic assumption for UTH, there was no relationship between the grooming received and the tolerance given. The population presents distribution contrary to the proposed by UTH, with grooming being more often distributed by dominant groomers in subordinate recipients, and between similar sex and age dyads. With less coercive power of the dominant in relation to the subordinate, it is possible that the social market of female interactions in the study group attributes greater social value to individuals of the same sex and age than to dominant individuals. This condition may be associated with the lower competition regime and consequent lower monopolization of resources that the group faces due to habitat fragmentation and urbanization.

O macaco-prego (Sapajus nigritus (Goldfuss, 1809)) é uma espécie que possui alta plasticidade comportamental, adaptando-se facilmente em ambientes urbanos adjacentes ao seu habitat natural. O objetivo destre trabalho foi estudar a ecologia e o comportamento de uma população de S. nigritus in situ no campus da Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), Londrina, Paraná. Foram coletados dados comportamentais e ecológicos pelos métodos scan sampling e animal focal da população durante o período de um ano (setembro de 2016 a agosto de 2017), totalizando 310,2h de esforço amostral. O grupo de estudo possui 52,2 ha de área de vida, cuja área nuclear possui 9,6 ha, correspondendo a 18,3% do total da área de vida. A abundância populacional teve média de 25,5 indivíduos, a razão sexual com média de 1,26:1 (machos e fêmeas) e a densidade populacional média 49 ind/Km2 (0,020 Km2/ind). Os resultados indicam que as altas frequências em determinados locais por estação do ano estão relacionadas à época de frutificação de algumas espécies vegetais presentes nesses locais. Foram mensurados 81 percursos diários, que variam entre 890 a 2.428 m, sendo que os percursos mais longos ocorreram na primavera. O grupo de estudo não possui preferência por locais arborizados ou edificados pelo campus, tornando-o um ambiente homogêneo para uso do grupo. O grupo consumiu 101 espécies vegetais de 45 famílias botânicas, sendo 55 nativas e 46 exóticas, sendo as famílias com maior abundância foram a Fabaceae e Myrtaceae. O item alimentar mais consumido foi fruto (51,9%), seguido de caule (24,4%) e flor (14,5%). A maior abundância de espécies vegetais consumidas foi no verão (n=21), seguida da primavera (n=20), inverno (n=18) e outono (n=16). Das espécies vegetais consumidas, houve um maior consumo de nêsperas (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindley.) (11,8%) e as sete-copas (Terminalia catappa L.) (7,9%). Houve um maior consumo de frutos em relação aos demais itens no outono (65,3%) e primavera (65,1%). O inverno, que é a estação provavelmente com maior gasto energético devido às baixas temperaturas, teve a maior abundância de itens alimentares (n=52), e consumo de flores (6,8%), com uma maior frequência de forrageamento de folhas secas (33,4%)As lixeiras do campus foram mais forrageadas no outono (11,4%) e inverno (12,2%). A população estudada gastou a maior parte do tempo em atividades de forrageamento (27,4%), locomoção (24,7%), seguidas de alimentação (22,6%) e interações sociais (13,3%)No período chuvoso se locomoveram mais (26%), houve uma maior frequência de atividades sociais (15%) e realizam mais auto-atividades (9%) em comparação ao período seco, em que houve uma maior frequência nas demais atividades: alimentação (23,2%), forrageamento (28,6%) e social (11,4%). The capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus Goldfuss, 1809) is a species that has high behavioral plasticity, adapting easily in urban environments adjacent to its natural habitat. The purpose of this work was study the ecology and behavior of a wild population of S.nigritus in the campus of State University of Londrina, Londrina / PR, Brazil. Behavioral and ecological data of the capuchin monkey population were collected using the scan sampling and focal animal sampling methods during the period of one year (September 2016 to August 2017), totaling 310.2 hours of collection. The study group has 52.2 ha of living area, whose nuclear area has 9.6 ha, corresponding to 18.3% of the total area of life. Population abundance had an average of 25.5 individuals, the sex ratio was 1.26:1 (males and females) and the mean population density was 49 ind/Km2 (0.020 Km2/ind). The results indicate that the high frequencies in certain locations per season are related to the fruiting season of some plant species present in these places. Eighty-one day range, ranging from 890 to 2.428 m was measured, with the longest courses occurring in the spring, the season with the highest frequency of locomotion. The study group does not prefer wooded or campus-built sites, making it a homogeneous environment for group use. The group consumed 101 plant species from 44 botanical families, being 55 native and 46 exotic, the families with the greatest abundance were Fabaceae and Myrtaceae. The most consumed food item was fruit (51.9%), followed by stem (24.4%), flower (14.5%), seed (7.6%) and root (1.5%). The greatest diversity of plant species was in the summer (21), followed by spring (20), winter (18) and autumn (16). There was a higher consumption of Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindley. (11.8%) and Terminalia catappa L. (7.9%), in which both the mesocarp of the fruit the seeds. There was a higher fruit consumption in relation to the other items in the autumn (65.3%) and spring (65.1%). Winter, which is probably the season with higher energy expenditure due to the low temperatures, had the greatest abundance of food items (52 items), in which the group could compensate for the energy expenditure and the lower fruit consumption, with a higher intake of such as seeds (2.2%) and vertebrate animals (1.4%). In winter, there was also an increase in the consumption of petioles (1.8%) and flowers (6.8%), and a higher frequency of foraging in dry leaves (33.4%), in which it had a higher frequency in autumn (35%). The campus dumps were further foraged in the fall (11.4%) and winter (12.2%). These dietary behaviors in the dry period of the year reflect the food adaptation of this group during a period of reduced fruit consumption (winter). The studied population spent the most of the time in foraging activities (27.4%), locomotion (24.7%), followed by feeding (22.6%), social interactions (13.3%), (8.5%), agonistic (2.1%), sexual (1.3%) and others (
