In the rather small region where Velebit Mountain meets Adriatic coast strong wind bora blows and influences traffic regimen on the newly built motorway route passing through this part of the country. So far measurements of wind speed have been made and they have shown the most endangered locations along the motorway. Parallel to the measurements numerical simulation of the airflow on the Vucipolje location which is the most complex location to protect was done. As a part of this simulation several types of protecting structures were analyzed. The choice of optimal solution is discussed.

Croatian Motorway Network has greatly expanded in the last decade. During that time numerous bridges and viaducts were designed and built. They were mostly built from prefabricated girders which enabled fast construction. On the other hand it was limiting factor for the designers since standardized girders were used. Although they were similarly designed, great attention was given to detail design in order to have primarily durable structures. Visible details like safety barriers are parts users mostly criticize and complain about. Therefore aesthetics aspects were highly respected as well. However, Croatian bridges are proving that we also have respectable achievements in this field. Croatian experience in building large concrete arch bridges is well-known (Krk Bridge).

This paper describes problems caused by wind along motorway section Sveti Rok Tunnel – Posedarje Interchange. Due to relief characteristics along this section (Velebit Mountain meets Adriatic coast) wind velocity and direction vary a lot. During the wintertime, northern to northeastern wind bora blows in this region (Figure 1) reaching enormous wind velocities. Studies have shown that the lateral wind speed exceeding 30 m/s is critical for vehicle's stability on a dry roadway. During stronger wind blows and severe roadway conditions, mentioned motorway section is closed for traffic.
