Las fíbulas “de caballito”, con o sin jinete, suelen vincularse con una élite ecuestre que asume el protagonismo en la nueva organización social de la segunda Edad del Hierro de la Hispania céltica, estructurada en torno a los oppida y sus territorios. Almagro-Gorbea y Torres (1999) realizaron una clasificación tipo-cronológica de los ejemplares conocidos, identificando una serie de talleres. Frente a un catálogo de 136 piezas, las que incorporaban un jinete representaban solo un 10 %. Una serie de nuevos hallazgos, así como las revisiones realizadas en las colecciones de diversos museos, permiten identificar dentro de este grupo un tipo concreto, con una distribución que abarca los territorios celtibérico, vacceo y vetón. Denominado como “tipo Castellares”, las características formales de todos los ejemplares son idénticas. Su estudio formal, técnico y analítico permite plantear su interpretación como símbolos compartidos de alianzas entre jefes en momentos de conflicto.

Innovation in laboratory testing algorithms to address seemingly uncontrollable global supply chain shortages in plastics and other consumables during emergencies such as the current COVID-19 pandemic have been urgently needed. We report our experience with specimen pooling on SARS-CoV-2 testing in an acute care hospital microbiology laboratory during a high testing demand period that exceeded available processing capacity. A fully automated four-in-one pooling algorithm was designed and validated. Correlation and agreement were calculated. A custom Microsoft Excel tool was designed for use by the technologists to aid interpretation, verification and result entry. Cost-per-test impact for pooling was measured in reference to the consumable cost and was denoted as the percentage reduction of cost versus the baseline cost-per-test of testing specimens individually. Validation showed a strong correlation between the signals observed when testing specimens individually versus those that were pooled. Average crossing point difference was 1.352 cycles (95% confidence interval of -0.235 and 2.940). Overall agreement observed between individually and pooled tested specimens was 96.8%. Stratified agreement showed an expected decreased performance of pooling for weakly positive specimens dropping below 60% after a crossing point of 35. Post-implementation data showed the consumable cost-savings achieved through this algorithm was 85.5% after 8 months, creating both testing and resource capacity. Pooling is an effective method to be used for SARS-CoV-2 testing during the current pandemic to address resource shortages and provide quick turnaround times for high test volumes without compromising performance.

A pandemia afetou o modo e a substância da campanha oficial para as eleições presidenciais portuguesas de 2021 e obrigou a um ajustamento das ações planeadas, subtraindo mobilidade, mobilização e rua aos/às candidatos/as. Mais profundamente, favoreceu a fermentação de discursos populistas e a radicalização do debate. Estas circunstâncias tornaram a disputa única na história da democracia portuguesa contemporânea. Um dos temas menos explorados nos estudos sobre o populismo é a questão de género e o lugar da mulher na sociedade globalizada. Neste quadro, propomo-nos analisar a cobertura conferida às presidenciais nos jornais televisivos da noite da RTP1, SIC, TVI e CMTV, durante o período da campanha eleitoral, tendo como objeto central as duas candidatas mulheres, Ana Gomes e Marisa Matias.

As telecommunication networks become increasingly critical for societal functioning, ensuring their resilience in the face of energy disruptions is paramount. This review paper comprehensively analyzes strategies and challenges associated with achieving energy resilience in telecommunication networks. It explores various aspects, including policies, energy backup systems, renewable energy integration, and energy management techniques. This paper discusses how these strategies can be implemented to build resilience across three phases: preparedness (referring to the proactive measures taken in advance), response and relief, recovery and reconstruction. Additionally, it discusses the challenges associated with implementing energy resilience measures, taking into account policies, sustainability and environment, and climate change. By synthesizing existing research and identifying research gaps, this review paper aims to provide insights into the state-of-the-art practices and future directions for enhancing energy resilience in telecommunications, enabling robust and uninterrupted communication services.

Introducción al dossier de la revista

En Portugal, el período posrevolucionario no cedió lugar a cambios en las cuestiones de igualdad entre hombres y mujeres. Sin embargo, en los últimos 40 años, ha habido dos temas centrales para la igualdad de género, discutidos en el Parlamento: la paridad y la legalización del aborto. En 1975, la política era profundamente masculina y los hombres estaban en el centro de las decisiones en todas las esferas de la sociedad. Cuarenta años después, la representación de las mujeres en la Asamblea de la República pasó del 7,6% al 40% en 2019, gracias a la aprobación de la ley de paridad en 2006. La lucha por la despenalización del aborto también se prolongó desde 1974 hasta 2007, cuando se aprobó el segundo referéndum. Este ha consistido en un proceso largo y muy polarizado, con enfrentamiento de posiciones contrarias, dentro y fuera del Parlamento. En este recorrido intervinieron partidos políticos, ONG y diversas organizaciones de mujeres. En este artículo analizaremos las dinámicas sociales y políticas que llevaron a estos cambios, resaltaremos las luchas en las que participaron las mujeres y examinaremos los cambios en la cobertura mediática de la problemática de género, a partir de dos casos centrales: la paridad y la interrupción voluntaria del embarazo (IVG). Concluimos que fueron los debates sobre estos temas los que más involucraron a las mujeres, y que más contribuyeron a la toma de conciencia de su situación frente a la sociedad patriarcal, abriendo puertas a su emancipación y empoderamiento.

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles with wide range of morphologies contributing to regulating different signaling pathways and several cellular functions. Leigh syndrome (LS) is a classic pediatric mitochondrial disorder characterized by complex and variable clinical pathologies, and primarily affects the nervous system during early development. It is important to understand the differences between mitochondrial morphologies in healthy and diseased states so that focused therapies can target the disease during its early stages. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of mitochondrial dynamics in five patient-derived human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) containing different mutations associated with LS. Our results suggest that subtle alterations in mitochondrial morphologies are specific to the mtDNA variant. Three out of the five LS-hiPSCs exhibited characteristics consistent with fused mitochondria. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study that quantifies mitochondrial dynamics in hiPSCs specific to mitochondrial disorders. In addition, we observed an overall decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential in all five LS-hiPSCs. A more thorough analysis of the correlations between mitochondrial dynamics, membrane potential dysfunction caused by mutations in the mtDNA in hiPSCs and differentiated derivatives will aid in identifying unique morphological signatures of various mitochondrial disorders during early stages of embryonic development.

A pandemia de covid-19, declarada pela Organização Mundial de Saúde a 11 de março de 2020, teve um impacto imediato no quotidiano das sociedades globalizadas. No ocidente, a doença desafiou a democracia e as liberdades individuais e cívicas, ao mesmo tempo que demonstrou a centralidade do Estado e dos governos na gestão da crise. Para a concretização das orientações emanadas pelos responsáveis políticos, foram centrais as estratégias e dispositivos comunicacionais de executivos governamentais e autoridades sanitárias, assim como a sua capacidade para influenciar a agenda dos media dominantes. Este artigo objetiva refletir sobre as estratégias de comunicação utilizadas pelo governo português na gestão da crise e os seus reflexos na cobertura jornalística televisiva, analisada a partir de um estudo empírico que incide sobre os 3 primeiros meses da propagação do vírus em Portugal. Utiliza-se uma metodologia de análise de conteúdo, quantitativa e qualitativa, com base em categorias unívocas pré-determinadas sistematizadas no programa Excel. Inicia-se a exposição apresentando alguns elementos de enquadramento político, social e comunicacional que envolvem o desenrolar da pandemia ao longo do ano de 2020, no mundo e em Portugal. Em seguida, sintetizam-se tendências e estratégias de comunicação de organizações internacionais e nacionais. Por fim, os resultados da análise empírica são apresentados, discutidos e interpretados da perspetiva das estratégias de comunicação das instituições de saúde pública sobre a cobertura jornalística da pandemia.

Background: Malaria during pregnancy is a major contributor to the global burden of adverse birth outcomes including fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, and fetal loss. Recent evidence supports a role for angiogenic dysregulation and perturbations to placental vascular development in the pathobiology of malaria in pregnancy. The Angiopoietin-Tie2 axis is critical for placental vascularization and remodeling. We hypothesized that disruption of this pathway would contribute to malaria-induced adverse birth outcomes. Methods: Using samples from a previously conducted prospective cohort study of pregnant women in Malawi, we measured circulating levels of angiopoietin-1 (Angpt-1) and Angpt-2 by Luminex (n=1392). We used a preclinical model of malaria in pregnancy (Plasmodium berghei ANKA [PbA] in pregnant BALB/c mice), genetic disruption of Angpt-1 (Angpt1+/− mice), and micro-CT analysis of placental vasculature to test the hypothesis that disruptions to the Angpt-Tie2 axis by malaria during pregnancy would result in aberrant placental vasculature and adverse birth outcomes. Findings: Decreased circulating levels of Angpt-1 and an increased ratio of Angpt-2/Angpt-1 across pregnancy were associated with malaria in pregnancy. In the preclinical model, PbA infection recapitulated disruptions to the Angiopoietin-Tie2 axis resulting in reduced fetal growth and viability. Malaria decreased placental Angpt-1 and Tie2 expression and acted synergistically with reduced Angpt-1 in heterozygous dams (Angpt1+/−), to worsen birth outcomes by impeding vascular remodeling required for placental function. Interpretation: Collectively, these data support a mechanistic role for the Angpt-Tie2 axis in malaria in pregnancy, including a potential protective role for Angpt-1 in mitigating infection-associated adverse birth outcomes. This paper reviews the current techniques used in energy management systems to optimize energy schedules into microgrids, accounting for uncertainties for various time frames (day-ahead and real-time operations). The current uncertainties affecting applications, including residential, commercial, virtual power plants, electric mobility, and multi-carrier microgrids, are the main subjects of this article. We outline the most recent modeling approaches to describe the uncertainties associated with various microgrid applications, such as prediction errors, load consumption, degradation, and state of health. The modeling approaches discussed in this article are probabilistic, possibilistic, information gap theory, and deterministic. Then, the paper presents and compares the current optimization techniques, considering the uncertainties in their problem formulations, such as stochastic, robust, fuzzy optimization, information gap theory, model predictive control, multiparametric programming, and machine learning techniques. The optimization techniques depend on the model used, the data available, the specific application, the real-time platform, and the optimization time. We hope to guide researchers to identify the best optimization technique for energy scheduling, considering the specific uncertainty and application. Finally, the most challenging issues to enhance microgrid operations, despite uncertainties by considering new trends, are discussed.

Abstract Background The microbial populations of the human intestinal tract and their relationship to specific diseases have been extensively studied during the last decade. However, the characterization of the human bile microbiota as a whole has been hampered by difficulties in accessing biological samples and the lack of adequate methodologies to assess molecular studies. Although a few reports have described the biliary microbiota in some hepatobiliary diseases, the bile microbiota of healthy individuals has not been described. With this in mind, the goal of the present study was to generate fundamental knowledge on the composition and activity of the human bile microbiota, as well as establishing its potential relationship with human bile-related disorders. Results Human bile samples from the gallbladder of individuals from a control group, without any record of hepatobiliary disorder, were obtained from liver donors during liver transplantation surgery. A bile DNA extraction method was optimized together with a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for determining the bacterial load. This allows the selection of samples to perform functional metagenomic analysis. Bile samples from the gallbladder of individuals suffering from lithiasis were collected during gallbladder resection and the microbial profiles assessed, using a 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing analysis, and compared with those of the control group. Additionally, the metabolic profile of the samples was analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We detected, for the first time, bacterial communities in gallbladder samples of individuals without any hepatobiliary pathology. In the biliary microecosystem, the main bacterial phyla were represented by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Significant differences in the relative abundance of different taxa of both groups were found. Sequences belonging to the family Propionibacteriaceae were more abundant in bile samples from control subjects; meanwhile, in patients with cholelithiasis members of the families Bacteroidaceae, Prevotellaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, and Veillonellaceae were more frequently detected. Furthermore, the metabolomics analysis showed that the two study groups have different metabolic profiles. Conclusions Our results indicate that the gallbladder of human individuals, without diagnosed hepatobiliary pathology, harbors a microbial ecosystem that is described for the first time in this study. Its bacterial representatives and metabolites are different from those detected in people suffering from cholelithiasis. In this regard, since liver donors have been subjected to the specific conditions of the hospital’s intensive care unit, including an antibiotic treatment, we must be cautious in stating that their bile samples contain a physiologically normal biliary microbiome. In any case, our results open up new possibilities to discover bacterial functions in a microbial ecosystem that has not previously been explored.

O ano de 2020 ficará marcado na memória mundial como o ano da pandemia de Covid-19. Embora a doença tenha eclodido na China no final de 2019, a sua propagação foi posterior e veio colocar em causa a sociedade globalizada, com efeitos sociais, políticos e económicos graves, mas ainda a serem determinados em toda a sua extensão. Na cobertura do surto o jornalismo, em crise há algu- mas décadas (Zelizer, 2004; 2009; 2015; 2017), reassumiu um papel central e ad- quiriu um novo vigor, viajando por múltiplos dispositivos e écrans (Deuze, 2019). Em Portugal, num cenário de isolamento, predominantemente familiar, a televisão emergiu como elo social (Wolton, 1994), confirmando que continua ser o médium dominante (ERC, 2016, 2019; OBERCOM, 2018; Statista, 2019). Neste contexto, a nossa homenagem a Nelson Traquina tem como objetivo apresentar, comen- tar e discutir a sua contribuição para o estudo do jornalismo em Portugal a partir da análise da cobertura jornalística televisiva da crise pandémica. Com este fim, recuperámos estudos teóricos sobre as Teorias da Notícia e os estudos empíri- cos sobre o HIV/SIDA realizados pelo autor (por exemplo, Traquina, 1993; 2002; 2004; 2010; Traquina e al., 2001). Elegemos um corpus de análise empírico, com- preendido por blocos de jornais televisivos dos canais generalistas RTP1, SIC e TVI. Utilizamos uma metodologia fundada na construção de uma base de dados em File Maker Pro inspirada nos trabalhos de Traquina sobre o HIV/SIDA. Os re- sultados obtidos, ainda que com caráter exploratório, permitem a discussão das teorias da notícia enquanto construção (Traquina, 1993) e o papel das rotinas na produção da informação televisiva.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an emerging public health concern and there is an urgent need for ways to rapidly identify cases so that outbreaks can be managed effectively. Conventional testing for HAV relies on anti-HAV IgM seropositivity. However, studies estimate that 10–30% of patients may not be diagnosed by serology. Molecular assays that can directly detect viral nucleic acids have the potential to improve diagnosis, which is key to prevent the spread of infections. In this study, we developed a real-time PCR (RT-PCR) assay to detect HAV RNA for the identification of acute HAV infection. Primers were designed to target the conserved 5′-untranslated region (5′-UTR) of HAV, and the assay was optimized on both the Qiagen Rotor-Gene and the BD MAX. We successfully detected HAV from patient serum and stool samples with moderate differences in sensitivity and specificity depending on the platform used. Our results highlight the clinical utility of using a molecular assay to detect HAV from various specimen types that can be implemented in hospitals to assist with diagnostics, treatment and prevention.

Este artigo analisa a estratégia de informação levada a cabo por Marcello Caetano quando, em setembro de 1968, substituiu Salazar na presidência do Conselho de Ministros. Esta estratégia consistiu na realização de acontecimentos que lhe assegurassem uma boa visibilidade na imprensa, afirmação de uma relação mais próxima com os jornalistas, e realização das conversas em famíliateledifundidas. A investigação assenta no estudo do perfil político de Marcello Caetano suportada por fontes (cartas, textos, livros e entrevistas) e na analise de jornais da época (A Capital, Diário de Lisboa, Diário Popular, Diário de Notícias) no período compreendido entre setembro de 1968 e setembro de 1969. Como conclusão assinala-se que a construção da imagem deste político na imprensa favoreceu o inicio da sua governação através da construção de uma personalidade política, social e familiar bem distinta da de Salazar.

Despite the negative impacts of increased ultraviolet radiation intensity on plants, these organisms continue to grow and produce under the increased environmental UV levels. We hypothesized that ambient UV intensity can generate acclimations in plant growth, leaf morphology, and photochemical functioning in modern genotypes of Coffea arabica and C. canephora. Coffee plants were cultivated for ca. six months in a mini greenhouse under either near ambient (UVam) or reduced (UVre) ultraviolet regimes. At the plant scale, C. canephora was substantially more impacted by UVam when compared to C. arabica, investing more carbon in all juvenile plant components than under UVre. When subjected to UVam, both species showed anatomic adjustments at the leaf scale, such as increases in stomatal density in C. canephora, at the abaxial and adaxial cuticles in both species, and abaxial epidermal thickening in C. arabica, although without apparent impact on the thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma. Surprisingly, C. arabica showed more efficient energy dissipation mechanism under UVam than C. canephora. UVam promoted elevated protective carotenoid content and a greater use of energy through photochemistry in both species, as reflected in the photochemical quenching increases. This was associated with an altered chlorophyll a/b ratio (significantly only in C. arabica) that likely promoted a greater capability to light energy capture. Therefore, UV levels promoted different modifications between the two Coffea sp. regarding plant biomass production and leaf morphology, including a few photochemical differences between species, suggesting that modifications at plant and leaf scale acted as an acclimation response to actual UV intensity.

Andean blackberries (Rubus glaucus Benth) are fruits rich in phytocomponents with high antioxidant activity. In this work, the changes in the total polyphenol content (TPC), the total flavonoid content (TFC), and the total anthocyanin content (TAC) of four blackberry varieties at three maturity stages (E1-25%, E2-50%, and E3-100%) were measured. The antioxidant activity (AA) was evaluated using the 2,2’azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazolin 6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. TPC and TFC content decreased with the increase in the maturity stage. The blackberry Brazos cultivar presented TPC values of 51.26, 38.16, and 31.59 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (DW) at E1, E2, and E3, respectively. The TAC and soluble solids increased with the increase in the maturity stage of the fruits. The Andimora variety at E3 presented a high TPC content, and the Colombiana variety presented a high TFC content. The blackberry Colombiana cultivar presented TAC values of 1.40, 2.95, and 12.26 mg cy-3-glu/100g DW at E1, E2, and E3, respectively. The blackberry Colombiana cultivar presented a high AA value at 1278.63 µmol TE/g DW according to the ABTS method and 1284.55 µmol TE/g DW according to the FRAP method. The TPC and TFC showed a high correlation with the AA according to the ABTS and the FRAP methods. The Pearson correlation between the TFC and AA/ABTS has a value of r = 0.92. The TFC and AA/FRAP present a value of r = 0.94.

El siguiente artículo presenta un análisis histórico-comparativo de los últimos planes y programas de Formación Inicial Docente (FID) de profesorado de Educación Media en Uruguay en función del lugar asignado a las Tecnologías Digitales (TD). Cabe destacar que este trabajo se enmarca en un proyecto de investigación que busca indagar sobre las posibilidades, ventajas y limitaciones que la integración de TD aporta a la hora de reflexionar sobre las prácticas desarrolladas tanto por docentes en formación inicial como en formación en servicio. En esta instancia en particular se optó por un análisis de documentos y se trabajó con los planes de estudio 2005 y 2008 de la FID correspondientes a la carrera de Profesorado. En el caso del Plan 2005 se revisaron 151 programas de las asignaturas de los diferentes profesorados, en tanto que para 2008 se consultaron 238 programas. El estudio de los datos obtenidos revela, entre otros hallazgos, los siguientes: un relativo retroceso entre el plan actual (2008) y el anterior, ausencia de criterios comunes con respecto al lugar asignado a las TD en los programas de las asignaturas de los diferentes profesorados y referencias irregulares en cuanto a las conexiones entre la asignatura Informática y otras de la formación inicial. En el contexto aquí descrito se deja planteada la reflexión sobre los aspectos clave a considerar a la hora de tomar decisiones que posibiliten la inclusión genuina de las TD en la FID.

El trabajo analiza la cobertura mediática realizada por ABC, Arriba, Diário de Notícias y Diário da Manhã del único viaje de Estado del general Franco al extranjero. Se desplazó al Portugal de Salazar en octubre de 1949 con la pretensión de mejorar su imagen y romper el aislamiento internacional. Prensa española y portuguesa, sometidas ambas a censura previa, contribuyeron al logro de este objetivo. La puesta en marcha de un análisis cuantitativo, cualitativo y comparativo ha permitido contrastar el comportamiento de estos diarios en función de su ámbito geográfico y del modelo de prensa privada u oficial que representan. Se ha comprobado la homogeneidad de sus discursos y de los leit motiv defendidos; la mayor cobertura que brindaron las cabeceras portuguesas y el papel de los diarios oficiales como auténtica prensa de combate ideológico.

This paper presents the technology of the metallic threads used in the textiles of the Middle Ages trough the study of an embroidery fragment preserved in the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas. The origin and the development of the metallic threads technology are explained, including the different metals and alloys used. The paper also studies the questions related with the provenance and workshop of the embroidery as an example of the diversity of decorative sources and workshops active in the 12th-13th centuries in the Western Mediterranean area.

Los depósitos con restos óseos animales enterrados bajo el pavimento en ámbitos domésticos forman parte de prácticas rituales bien conocidas en la Protohistoria peninsular, tradicionalmente asociadas a la fundación o remodelación de nuevos edificios o a ritos vinculados a la propiciación y la fertilidad. Aunque los ejemplos mejor estudiados se encuentran en la zona levantina, el fenómeno también se conoce en yacimientos del interior. Este artículo tiene por objeto presentar un depósito ritual excavado en el poblado vetón del Cerro de la Mesa, en el valle medio del Tajo, cuyas características formales lo emparentan con las ofrendas domésticas de la zona ibérica. Se trata de un hoyo situado en el umbral de la Casa 1, que contiene los restos seleccionados de varios ovinos y un pequeño cuenco cerámico colocado en posición invertida. El análisis de los restos óseos, el contenido del cuenco y el estudio del contexto arqueológico en que se situaba el depósito han permitido relacionarlo con prácticas de sacrificio y libación dentro del marco de la religiosidad vetona. Este trabajo pretende igualmente contribuir a la formación de un corpus peninsular de inhumaciones rituales de animales en contextos domésticos, que impulse el adecuado estudio de la ritualidad protohistórica.

As new grid codes have been created to permit the integration of large scale photovoltaic power plants into the transmission system, the enhancement of the local control of the photovoltaic (PV) generators is necessary. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present a local controller of active and reactive power to comply the new requirements asked by the transmission system operators despite the variation of ambient conditions without using extra devices. For this purpose, the control considers the instantaneous capability curves of the PV generator which vary due to the change of solar irradiance, temperature, dc voltage and modulation index. To validate the control, the PV generator is modeled in DIgSILENT PowerFactory ® and tested under different ambient conditions. The results show that the control developed can modify the active and reactive power delivered to the desired value at different solar irradiance and temperature.

This paper reports a general overview of current research on analysis and control of the power grid with grid scale PV-based power generations as well as of various consequences of grid scale integration of PV generation units into the power systems. Moreover, the history of PV renewable growth, deregulation of power system and issues related to grid-connected PV systems considering its contribution to various responsibilities like frequency control, virtual inertia capabilities and voltage regulation are discussed. Moreover, various outcomes of the high-penetrated grid with PV power plants such as power quality, active and reactive power control, protection, balancing and reliability under various loading conditions are reviewed and discussed.

La existencia de fosas rellenas con tierra, cenizas, fragmentos cerámicos y fauna denominadas genéricamente como cenizales, basureros o vertederos, es un hecho bien conocido en la Meseta Norte durante la Segunda Edad del Hierro, vinculándose con los grupos Vacceos y Vettones. Sin embargo, su distribución debe ampliarse al occidente de la Meseta Sur y oriente extremeño, como se evidencia tanto en el Cerro de la Mesa como a través de indicios documentados en otros yacimientos más occidentales. Se presenta aquí un detallado estudio de un sector de la fosa que actuó como vertedero para la retirada de ciertos restos domésticos con ocasión de la reurbanización en profundidad del poblado vettón que tuvo lugar en la transición del siglo III al II a.C.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVEEvidence-based clinical practice emerged with the aim of guiding clinical issues in order to reduce the degree of uncertainty in decision-making. The Cochrane Collaboration has been developing systematic reviews on randomized controlled trials as high-quality intervention study subjects. Today, physiotherapy methods are widely required in treatments within many fields of healthcare. Therefore, it is extremely important to map out the situation regarding scientific evidence within physiotherapy. The aim of this study was to identify systematic reviews on physiotherapeutic interventions and investigate the scientific evidence and recommendations regarding whether further studies would be needed.TYPE OF STUDY AND SETTINGCross-sectional study conducted within the postgraduate program on Internal Medicine and Therapeutics and at the Brazilian Cochrane Center.METHODSSystematic reviews presenting physiotherapeutic interventions as the main investigation, in the Cochrane Reviews Group, edition 2/2009, were identified and classified.RESULTSOut of the 3,826 reviews, 207 (5.41%) that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected. Only 0.5% of the reviews concluded that the intervention presented a positive effect and that further studies were not recommended; 45.9% found that there seemed to be a positive effect but recommended further research; and 46.9% found that the evidence was insufficient for clinical practice and suggested that further research should be conducted.CONCLUSIONOnly one systematic review (“Pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease”) indicated that the intervention tested could be used with certainty that it would be effective. Most of the systematic reviews recommended further studies with greater rigor of methodological quality.CONTEXTO E OBJETIVOA prática clínica baseada em evidências surgiu com o intuito de guiar as questões clínicas para reduzir o grau de incerteza na tomada de decisão. A Colaboração Cochrane vem desen-volvendo revisões sistemáticas de ensaios clínicos controlados aleatórios como assunto de estudos de intervenção de alta qualidade. Atualmente, as modalidades de fisioterapia têm sido amplamente requisi-tadas nos tratamentos em diversas áreas da saúde. Portanto, a realização do mapeamento sobre a situação das evidências científicas da fisioterapia é de extrema importância. O objetivo do estudo foi identificar as revisões sistemáticas e verificar a evidência científica das intervenções fisioterapêuticas e a recomendação ou não de mais estudos.TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCALEstudo transversal, realizado no programa de pós-graduação em Medicina Interna e Terapêutica e no Centro Cochrane do Brasil.MÉTODOSForam identificadas e classificadas as revisões sistemáticas que apresentavam intervenções fisioterapêuticas como investigação principal, nos grupos da “Cochrane Reviews Group”, edição 2/2009.RESULTADOSDas 3.826 revisões, foram selecionadas 207 (5,41%) que preencheram os critérios de inclusão. Placental vascular development, and ultimately placental weight, is essential to healthy fetal development. Here, we examined placental weight in a cohort of Tanzanian women in association with angiogenic proteins known to regulate placental vascular development and perinatal outcomes.A total of n = 6579 women with recorded placental weight were included in this study. The relative risk of adverse perinatal outcomes (Apgar score, death, asphyxia, respiratory distress, seizures, pneumonia and sepsis) was compared between placental weight in the bottom and top 10th percentiles. We quantified angiogenic mediators (Ang-1, Ang-2, VEGF, PGF and sFlt-1) in plasma samples (n = 901) collected between 12 to 27 weeks of pregnancy using ELISA and assessed the relative risk of placental weight in the bottom and top 10th percentiles by protein levels in quartiles.Women with Ang-2 levels in the highest quartile had an increased relative risk of placental weight in the bottom 10th percentile (RR = 1.45 (1.10, 1.91), p = 0.01). Women with VEGF-A (RR = 0.73 (0.56, 0.96), p = 0.05) and PGF (RR = 0.58 (0.44, 0.72), p = 0.002) in the highest quartile had a reduced relative risk of placental weight in the bottom 10th percentile. Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of perinatal mortality worldwide, with the greatest burden occurring in resource-constrained settings. Based on the hypothesis that altered placental angiogenesis and inflammation early in pregnancy lead to PTB, we examined whether levels of inflammatory and angiogenic mediators, measured early in pregnancy, were predictive of spontaneous PTB (sPTB).Plasma samples were collected from a prospective cohort of primigravid Tanzanian women between 12-27 weeks gestation. A panel of 18 markers was screened on a training cohort of 426 women. Markers associated with sPTB in the training cohort were repeated in a test cohort of 628 women. All markers were measured by ELISA.In both the training and test cohorts plasma levels of IL-18BP, sICAM-1, sEndoglin and CHI3L1 were elevated and Leptin was lower at enrollment in women who subsequently experienced sPTB. In multivariate analysis women with plasma levels of CHI3L1, C5a, sICAM-1, AngptL3, sEndgolin, sFlt-1 and IL-18BP in the highest quartile had an increased risk of sPTB compared with those in the lowest quartile. Women with Leptin and Ang2 in the highest quartile had a reduced risk of sPTB compared with women in the lowest quartile.Levels of angiogenic and inflammatory mediators measured at mid-pregnancy were associated with subsequent sPTB. These findings provide insight into mechanisms underlying sPTB and suggest biomarkers that may have clinical utility in risk-stratifying pregnancies.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el funcionamiento de la censura del teatro en Portugal a partir del análisis de tres obras de teatro: La casa de Bernarda Alba de Federico García Lorca (presentada en 1947); Las quinas de Portugal, de Tirso de Molina (presentada en 1968); y El Triciclo, de Fernando Arrabal (presentada en 1968). El estudio se centra en dos momentos distintos del Estado Novo: el final de los años 40, época en la que la organización censoria entra en un proceso de restauración; y el período de los años 60, durante el cual se endurecieron los procesos de censura como consecuencia del recrudecimiento del régimen de Salazar. Este trabajo, que se basa en un estudio de fuentes documentales, pretende dar a conocer la representación de los procesos de censura y sus efectos en la sociedad y la cultura portuguesas.

Esta investigación analiza las estrategias de visibilidad que han alcanzado en la prensa portuguesa las mujeres parlamentarias durante los tres ciclos políticos de democracia correspondiente al periodo que va desde 1976 al año 2002. El objeto de estudio es, por tanto, doble: por un lado, determinar el grado de representación que alcanzan las mujeres en el parlamento, la cuota alcanzada en cada grupo parlamentario y el perfil trazado de las diputadas en cada ciclo político Y, por el otro, la representación que la prensa portuguesa hace de dichas mujeres políticas a través de los estereotipos que han conformado su agenda pública. Los resultados obtenidos proceden de una investigación enmarcada en un proyecto de investigación del Centro de Investigación Media e Jornalismo (CIMJ) de la Universidad Nova de Lisboa I+D (PTDC/CCI_COM 7102393/2008).

Considerações sobre a censura ao teatro durante os anos cinquenta, no Estado Novo, em Portugal: políticas, censores, organização e procedimentos.

A key process in the lifecycle of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is the fast invasion of human erythrocytes. Entry into the host cell requires the apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA-1), a type I transmembrane protein located in the micronemes of the merozoite. Although AMA-1 is evolving into the leading blood-stage malaria vaccine candidate, its precise role in invasion is still unclear. We investigate AMA-1 function using live video microscopy in the absence and presence of an AMA-1 inhibitory peptide. This data reveals a crucial function of AMA-1 during the primary contact period upstream of the entry process at around the time of moving junction formation. We generate a Plasmodium falciparum cell line that expresses a functional GFP-tagged AMA-1. This allows the visualization of the dynamics of AMA-1 in live parasites. We functionally validate the ectopically expressed AMA-1 by establishing a complementation assay based on strain-specific inhibition. This method provides the basis for the functional analysis of essential genes that are refractory to any genetic manipulation. Using the complementation assay, we show that the cytoplasmic domain of AMA-1 is not required for correct trafficking and surface translocation but is essential for AMA-1 function. Although this function can be mimicked by the highly conserved cytoplasmic domains of P. vivax and P. berghei, the exchange with the heterologous domain of the microneme protein EBA-175 or the rhoptry protein Rh2b leads to a loss of function. We identify several residues in the cytoplasmic tail that are essential for AMA-1 function. We validate this data using additional transgenic parasite lines expressing AMA-1 mutants with TY1 epitopes. We show that the cytoplasmic domain of AMA-1 is phosphorylated. Mutational analysis suggests an important role for the phosphorylation in the invasion process, which might translate into novel therapeutic strategies.
