A binary decision task, like yes-no questions or answer verification, reflects a significant real-world scenario such as where users look for confirmation about the correctness of their decisions on specific issues. In this work, we observe that language models exhibit a negative bias in the binary decisions of complex reasoning tasks. Based on our observations and the rationale about attention-based model dynamics, we propose a negative attention score (NAS) to systematically and quantitatively formulate negative bias. Based on NAS, we identify attention heads that attend to negative tokens provided in the instructions as answer candidate of binary decisions, regardless of the question in the prompt, and validate their association with the negative bias. Additionally, we propose the negative attention score alignment (NASA) method, which is a parameter-efficient fine-tuning technique to address the extracted negatively biased attention heads. Experimental results from various domains of reasoning tasks and large model search space demonstrate that NASA significantly reduces the gap between precision and recall caused by negative bias while preserving their generalization abilities. Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) aligns Large Language Models (LLMs) with human preferences. However, these preferences can often change over time due to external factors (e.g. environment change and societal influence). Consequently, what was wrong then might be right now. Current preference optimization algorithms do not account for temporal preference drift in their modeling, which can lead to severe misalignment. To address this limitation, we use a Dynamic Bradley-Terry model that models preferences via time-dependent reward functions, and propose Non-Stationary Direct Preference Optimisation (NS-DPO). By introducing a discount parameter in the loss function, NS-DPO applies exponential weighting, which proportionally focuses learning on more time-relevant datapoints. We theoretically analyse the convergence of NS-DPO in the offline setting, providing upper bounds on the estimation error caused by non-stationary preferences. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of NS-DPO1 for fine-tuning LLMs in scenarios with drifting preferences. By simulating preference drift using renowned reward models and modifying popular LLM datasets accordingly, we show that NS-DPO fine-tuned LLMs remain robust under non-stationarity, significantly outperforming baseline algorithms that ignore temporal preference changes, without sacrificing performance in stationary cases., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

Today, interconnect resistance and reliability are key limiters for the performance of advanced CMOS circuits. As transistor scaling is slowing, interconnect scaling has become the main driver for circuit miniaturization, and interconnect limitations are expected to become even more stringent in future CMOS technology nodes. Current Cu dual-damascene metallization is also becoming increasingly challenging as critical interconnect dimensions approach 10 nm, alternative metallization schemes are researched with increasing intensity for about a decade. The selection of alternative metals is a highly multifaceted task and includes many criteria, covering the resistivity at reduced dimension, reliability and thermal aspects, as well as a sustainability perspective. In this tutorial, we introduce the basic criteria for alternative metal benchmarking and selection, and discuss the current state of the art of the field. Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) agents navigate to a destination using natural language instructions and the visual information they observe. Existing methods for training VLN agents presuppose fixed datasets, leading to a significant limitation: the introduction of new environments necessitates retraining with previously encountered environments to preserve their knowledge. This makes it difficult to train VLN agents that operate in the ever-changing real world. To address this limitation, we present the Continual Vision-and-Language Navigation (CVLN) paradigm, designed to evaluate agents trained through a continual learning process. For the training and evaluation of CVLN agents, we re-arrange existing VLN datasets to propose two datasets: CVLN-I, focused on navigation via initial-instruction interpretation, and CVLN-D, aimed at navigation through dialogue with other agents. Furthermore, we propose two novel rehearsal-based methods for CVLN, Perplexity Replay (PerpR) and Episodic Self-Replay (ESR). PerpR prioritizes replaying challenging episodes based on action perplexity, while ESR replays previously predicted action logits to preserve learned behaviors. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods on CVLN through extensive experiments.

Abstractive summarization models often generate factually inconsistent content particularly when the parametric knowledge of the model conflicts with the knowledge in the input document. In this paper, we analyze the robustness of fine-tuning based summarization models to the knowledge conflict, which we call factual adaptiveness. We utilize pre-trained language models to construct evaluation sets and find that factual adaptiveness is not strongly correlated with factual consistency on original datasets. Furthermore, we introduce a controllable counterfactual data augmentation method where the degree of knowledge conflict within the augmented data can be adjustable. Our experimental results on two pre-trained language models (PEGASUS and BART) and two fine-tuning datasets (XSum and CNN/DailyMail) demonstrate that our method enhances factual adaptiveness while achieving factual consistency on original datasets on par with the contrastive learning baseline., Comment: EACL 2024

Deep neural networks trained on Functional Connectivity (FC) networks extracted from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data have gained popularity due to the increasing availability of data and advances in model architectures, including Graph Neural Network (GNN). Recent research on the application of GNN to FC suggests that exploiting the time-varying properties of the FC could significantly improve the accuracy and interpretability of the model prediction. However, the high cost of acquiring high-quality fMRI data and corresponding phenotypic labels poses a hurdle to their application in real-world settings, such that a model na\"ively trained in a supervised fashion can suffer from insufficient performance or a lack of generalization on a small number of data. In addition, most Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) approaches for GNNs to date adopt a contrastive strategy, which tends to lose appropriate semantic information when the graph structure is perturbed or does not leverage both spatial and temporal information simultaneously. In light of these challenges, we propose a generative SSL approach that is tailored to effectively harness spatio-temporal information within dynamic FC. With the rapid advancement in deep generative models, recent neural Text-To-Speech(TTS) models have succeeded in synthesizing human-like speech. There have been some efforts to generate speech with various prosody beyond monotonous prosody patterns. However, previous works have several limitations. First, typical TTS models depend on the scaled sampling temperature for boosting the diversity of prosody. Speech samples generated at high sampling temperatures often lack perceptual prosodic diversity, which can adversely affect the naturalness of the speech. Second, the diversity among samples is neglected since the sampling procedure often focuses on a single speech sample rather than multiple ones. In this paper, we propose DPP-TTS: a text-to-speech model based on Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs) with a prosody diversifying module. Our TTS model is capable of generating speech samples that simultaneously consider perceptual diversity in each sample and among multiple samples. Expressive speech synthesis models are trained by adding corpora with diverse speakers, various emotions, and different speaking styles to the dataset, in order to control various characteristics of speech and generate the desired voice. In this paper, we propose a style control (SC) VALL-E model based on the neural codec language model (called VALL-E), which follows the structure of the generative pretrained transformer 3 (GPT-3). The proposed SC VALL-E takes input from text sentences and prompt audio and is designed to generate controllable speech by not simply mimicking the characteristics of the prompt audio but by controlling the attributes to produce diverse voices. We identify tokens in the style embedding matrix of the newly designed style network that represent attributes such as emotion, speaking rate, pitch, and voice intensity, and design a model that can control these attributes. To evaluate the performance of SC VALL-E, we conduct comparative experiments with three representative expressive speech synthesis models: global style token (GST) Tacotron2, variational autoencoder (VAE) Tacotron2, and original VALL-E. We measure word error rate (WER), F0 voiced error (FVE), and F0 gross pitch error (F0GPE) as evaluation metrics to assess the accuracy of generated sentences. For comparing the quality of synthesized speech, we measure comparative mean option score (CMOS) and similarity mean option score (SMOS). To evaluate the style control ability of the generated speech, we observe the changes in F0 and mel-spectrogram by modifying the trained tokens. When using prompt audio that is not present in the training data, SC VALL-E generates a variety of expressive sounds and demonstrates competitive performance compared to the existing models. Video moment retrieval (VMR) identifies a specific moment in an untrimmed video for a given natural language query. This task is prone to suffer the weak visual-textual alignment problem innate in video datasets. Due to the ambiguity, a query does not fully cover the relevant details of the corresponding moment, or the moment may contain misaligned and irrelevant frames, potentially limiting further performance gains. To tackle this problem, we propose a background-aware moment detection transformer (BM-DETR). Our model adopts a contrastive approach, carefully utilizing the negative queries matched to other moments in the video. Specifically, our model learns to predict the target moment from the joint probability of each frame given the positive query and the complement of negative queries. This leads to effective use of the surrounding background, improving moment sensitivity and enhancing overall alignments in videos. We propose a novel low-rank tensor method for respiratory motion-resolved multi-echo image reconstruction. The key idea is to construct a 3-way image tensor (space $\times$ echo $\times$ motion state) from the conventional gridding reconstruction of highly undersampled multi-echo k-space raw data, and exploit low-rank tensor structure to separate it from undersampling artifacts. Healthy volunteers and patients with iron overload were recruited and imaged on a 3T clinical MRI system for this study. Results show that our proposed method Successfully reduced severe undersampling artifacts in respiratory motion-state resolved complex source images, as well as subsequent R2* and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). Compared to conventional respiratory motion-resolved compressed sensing (CS) image reconstruction, the proposed method had a reconstruction time at least three times faster, accounting for signal evolution along the echo dimension in the multi-echo data.

Encoded representations from a pretrained deep learning model (e.g., BERT text embeddings, penultimate CNN layer activations of an image) convey a rich set of features beneficial for information retrieval. Embeddings for a particular modality of data occupy a high-dimensional space of its own, but it can be semantically aligned to another by a simple mapping without training a deep neural net. In this paper, we take a simple mapping computed from the least squares and singular value decomposition (SVD) for a solution to the Procrustes problem to serve a means to cross-modal information retrieval. That is, given information in one modality such as text, the mapping helps us locate a semantically equivalent data item in another modality such as image. Using off-the-shelf pretrained deep learning models, we have experimented the aforementioned simple cross-modal mappings in tasks of text-to-image and image-to-text retrieval. Despite simplicity, our mappings perform reasonably well reaching the highest accuracy of 77% on recall@10, which is comparable to those requiring costly neural net training and fine-tuning. We have improved the simple mappings by contrastive learning on the pretrained models. Contrastive learning can be thought as properly biasing the pretrained encoders to enhance the cross-modal mapping quality. We have further improved the performance by multilayer perceptron with gating (gMLP), a simple neural architecture.

We propose a self-supervised learning method for long text documents based on contrastive learning. A key to our method is Shuffle and Divide (SaD), a simple text augmentation algorithm that sets up a pretext task required for contrastive updates to BERT-based document embedding. SaD splits a document into two sub-documents containing randomly shuffled words in the entire documents. The sub-documents are considered positive examples, leaving all other documents in the corpus as negatives. After SaD, we repeat the contrastive update and clustering phases until convergence. It is naturally a time-consuming, cumbersome task to label text documents, and our method can help alleviate human efforts, which are most expensive resources in AI. We have empirically evaluated our method by performing unsupervised text classification on the 20 Newsgroups, Reuters-21578, BBC, and BBCSport datasets. In particular, our method pushes the current state-of-the-art, SS-SB-MT, on 20 Newsgroups by 20.94% in accuracy. We also achieve the state-of-the-art performance on Reuters-21578 and exceptionally-high accuracy performances (over 95%) for unsupervised classification on the BBC and BBCSport datasets., Comment: Accepted at ICPR 2022

The recent advances in representation learning inspire us to take on the challenging problem of unsupervised image classification tasks in a principled way. We propose ContraCluster, an unsupervised image classification method that combines clustering with the power of contrastive self-supervised learning. ContraCluster consists of three stages: (1) contrastive self-supervised pre-training (CPT), (2) contrastive prototype sampling (CPS), and (3) prototype-based semi-supervised fine-tuning (PB-SFT). CPS can select highly accurate, categorically prototypical images in an embedding space learned by contrastive learning. We use sampled prototypes as noisy labeled data to perform semi-supervised fine-tuning (PB-SFT), leveraging small prototypes and large unlabeled data to further enhance the accuracy. We demonstrate empirically that ContraCluster achieves new state-of-the-art results for standard benchmark datasets including CIFAR-10, STL-10, and ImageNet-10. For example, ContraCluster achieves about 90.8% accuracy for CIFAR-10, which outperforms DAC (52.2%), IIC (61.7%), and SCAN (87.6%) by a large margin. Without any labels, ContraCluster can achieve a 90.8% accuracy that is comparable to 95.8% by the best supervised counterpart., Comment: Accepted at ICPR 2022

We propose a novel respiratory motion-resolved MR image reconstruction method that jointly treats multi-echo k-space raw data. Continuously acquired non-Cartesian multi-echo/multi-coil k-space data with free breathing are sorted/binned into the motion states from end-expiratory to end-inspiratory phases based on a respiratory motion signal. Temporal total variation applied to the motion state dimension of each echo is then coupled in the $\ell_2$ sense for joint reconstruction of the multiple echoes. Reconstructed source images of the proposed method are compared with conventional echo-by-echo motion-resolved reconstruction, and R2* of the proposed and echo-by-echo methods are compared with respect to a clinical reference. We demonstrate that inconsistency between echoes is successfully suppressed in the proposed joint reconstruction method, producing high-quality source images and R2* measurements compared to clinical reference.

Object placement is a fundamental task for robots, yet it remains challenging for partially observed objects. Existing methods for object placement have limitations, such as the requirement for a complete 3D model of the object or the inability to handle complex shapes and novel objects that restrict the applicability of robots in the real world. Herein, we focus on addressing the Unseen Object Placement (UOP}=) problem. We tackled the UOP problem using two methods: (1) UOP-Sim, a large-scale dataset to accommodate various shapes and novel objects, and (2) UOP-Net, a point cloud segmentation-based approach that directly detects the most stable plane from partial point clouds. Our UOP approach enables robots to place objects stably, even when the object's shape and properties are not fully known, thus providing a promising solution for object placement in various environments. We verify our approach through simulation and real-world robot experiments, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance for placing single-view and partial objects. Video corpus moment retrieval (VCMR) is the task to retrieve the most relevant video moment from a large video corpus using a natural language query. For narrative videos, e.g., dramas or movies, the holistic understanding of temporal dynamics and multimodal reasoning is crucial. Previous works have shown promising results; however, they relied on the expensive query annotations for VCMR, i.e., the corresponding moment intervals. To overcome this problem, we propose a self-supervised learning framework: Modal-specific Pseudo Query Generation Network (MPGN). First, MPGN selects candidate temporal moments via subtitle-based moment sampling. Then, it generates pseudo queries exploiting both visual and textual information from the selected temporal moments. Through the multimodal information in the pseudo queries, we show that MPGN successfully learns to localize the video corpus moment without any explicit annotation. Contextualized word embeddings can lead to state-of-the-art performances in natural language understanding. Recently, a pre-trained deep contextualized text encoder such as BERT has shown its potential in improving natural language tasks including abstractive summarization. Existing approaches in dialogue summarization focus on incorporating a large language model into summarization task trained on large-scale corpora consisting of news articles rather than dialogues of multiple speakers. In this paper, we introduce self-supervised methods to compensate shortcomings to train a dialogue summarization model. Our principle is to detect incoherent information flows using pretext dialogue text to enhance BERT's ability to contextualize the dialogue text representations. We build and fine-tune an abstractive dialogue summarization model on a shared encoder-decoder architecture using the enhanced BERT. We empirically evaluate our abstractive dialogue summarizer with the SAMSum corpus, a recently introduced dataset with abstractive dialogue summaries. All of our methods have contributed improvements to abstractive summary measured in ROUGE scores.
