In the summer of 2010, two researchers interviewed twenty-three library administrators of comparable academic libraries at American universities for their views of the value of research in academic libraries. The interview questions focused on the administrators' perceived value of academic librarians' research, incentives given to academic librarians to research, factors that influence the administrators' thinking about academic library research, opinions about the changes in Americans libraries in the past decades, and directions that they see the academic library heading. This paper reflects the answers of these (anonymous) administrators and attempts to analyze patterns in their responses that will be of value to the academic library and its community in America.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to attempt to explore the basics of the collection of medieval manuscripts by institutions by outlining some of the basic principles, challenges, and innovations in the realm of medieval manuscript collection. Design/methodology/approach - Medieval manuscripts involve both curation and librarianship in every step of collection management. Few fields of librarianship involve such fragmented history. This paper explores this fragmentation and demonstrates the intricacies and diversity involved in the collection process. Finally, it examines some collaborative options for institutions to effectively collect together. Findings - Institutions can effectively collaborate in medieval manuscript acquisition. Practical implications - Institutions may be able to institute similar programs as those used in the case studies. Originality/value - It is more important than ever to maintain quality collections on smaller budgets. These findings can assist institutions in acquiring high quality pieces without premium funding. The transition, [C12H10]+3→[C11H7]+2 + [CH3]+, has been detected both in the ion kinetic energy spectrum and in the mass spectrum of biphenyl. The width of a resulting 'metastable peak' has been measured by setting the magnetic field to accept [C11H7]+2 ions and scanning the high voltage at fixed electric sector voltage. The kinetic energy released in the decomposition, calculated from the peak width, amounted to 4.5 eV. With the assumption that this energy release is due entirely to charge separation, the charge distribution in [C12H10]+3 is discussed. The decomposition of metastable positive ions of methane formed by electron bombardment is discussed. Some new collision-induced decompositions involving the formation of H+, H2+˙ and H3+ have been found in the ion kinetic energy spectrum as well as in the mass spectrum of methane. In the latter case, the 'metastable peaks' occur below mass 1 on the mass scale and can be used for mass calibration in this region of the mass spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The technique of ion kinetic energy spectroscopy has been applied to the study of the aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, naphthalene, 2-methyl naphthalene, biphenyl and anthracene. The method is illustrated by a complete study of naphthalene in which transitions of metastable doubly- and singly-charged ions are listed, including reactions in which singly-charged ions are formed by collision induced charge-exchange reactions of doubly-charged ions and by the double process of charge-exchange and metastable decomposition with loss of one or two hydrogen atoms. Decompositions of doubly-charged ions into two singly-charged ions, together with the kinetic energies released in these decompositions, are also given for all the compounds studied. A new method of general applicability for determining the percentage deuterium labeling in organic compounds is described. It uses the heights of 'metastable peaks' in the mass spectrum to determine the relative amounts of deuterated and undeuterated species. The method is illustrated by describing the analysis of mixtures of toluene- o- d1 and toluene, of toluene α- d1 and toluene, and of toluene-2,6- d2, toluene- o- d1 and toluene. The article discusses websites used for cloud storage, allowing for the fast access to the storage of large amounts of data. The software corporation Windows' SkyDrive and the electronic commerce company Amazon.com's Cloud Drive are cloud storage websites which allow for the free storage of multiple data and file types. The article also discusses Photobucket for unlimited noncommercial photo storage, electronics company Apple's iCloud storage service for their iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet computers, and Internet and computer software company Google's Google Docs storage website.

Broad-band nondestructive ion detection is achieved in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer by impulsive excitation of a collection of trapped ions of different masses and recording of ion image currents induced on a small detector electrode embedded in but isolated from the adjacent end cap electrode. The image currents are directly measured using a simple differential preamplifier, filter, and amplifier combination and then Fourier analyzed to obtain broad-band frequency domain spectra characteristic of the sample ions. The use of the detector electrode provides a significant reduction in capacitive coupling with the ring electrode. This minimizes coupling of the rf drive signal, which can saturate the front-end stage of the detection circuit and prevent measurement of the relatively weaker ion image currents. Although impulsive excitation is preferred due to its broad-band characteristics and simplicity of use, results are also given for narrow-band ac and broad-band SWIFT (stored wave-form inverse Fourier transform) excitation. Data using argon, acetophenone, and n-butylbenzene show that a resolution of better than 1000 is obtained with a detection bandwidth of 400 kHz. An advantage of nondestructive ion detection is the ability to measure a single-ion population multiple times. This is demonstrated using argon as the sample gas with an average remeasurement efficiency of >90%. Tandem mass spectrometry experiments using a population of acetophenone ions are also shown.
