Background: In the absence of any interventions, 5-20% of infants born to HIVinfected women will be infected through breastfeeding. Objectives: This study determined the pattern of infant feeding in the first six months among HIV positive women attending Teaching Hospitals in Lagos. Methods: It was a cross sectional descriptive study. All mothers who were registered between July and September 2012 in the ‘Prevention of mother to child transmission’ (PMTCT) clinic were interviewed (n=200). Pre-tested interviewer administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data and analysis was done using Epi-info software. Chi-square and Fischer exact tests were used to determine associations and p-value was set at 0.05. Results: Many of the respondents, 46.5% (n=93) were within the age range of 30 – 34. Exclusive formula feeding (EFF) was practiced by majority 73.5% (n=147) of the respondents, 18.5% (n=37) practiced Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) while 8% (n=16) practiced mixed feeding. Poor knowledge of infant feeding options and feeling that EBF was not enough in the first six months of life were associated with EFF (p = 0.04) and mixed feeding (p = 0.01) respectively. Conclusion: Although majority of the r e spondent s pr ac t ic ed exclusive formula feeding, a sizeable proportion still practiced mixed feeding. Strengthening of counseling sessions at PMTCT clinic, encouragement of exclusive breastfeeding with antiretroviral drugs would help reduce the prevalence of mixed feeding and hence the risk of mother to child transmission of HIV.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important global public health challenge, and the burden of the disease is huge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the majority of people with this condition reside. Undiagnosed DM is more prevalent in LMICs. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors for DM in Ekiti State., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, household-based survey using a four-stage multistage sampling design and the World Health Organization (WHO)-STEPS survey manual was conducted from July to September 2020 as a part of the Ekiti State coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survey. Of the 5,145 sampled households, 4,726 individuals gave consent to participate in the survey. Out of these, 3043 had fasting plasma glucose results available and were included in the analysis., Results: There were 2257 (74.2%) women and 786 (25.8%) men. The prevalence of DM was 6.5% (6.5% in males and 6.6% in females, P = 0.946). Diabetes was found to be more prevalent among those with a secondary school education or higher (10.9%); employed in the formal sector (13.4%); separated, divorced, or widowed (8.5%); with raised blood pressure (9.3%); and who were aged 30-59 years (all P < 0.05). Multivariable logistic regression showed that age, education, occupation, and hypertension were all positively and significantly associated with an increased risk of DM., Conclusion: The prevalence of DM in Ekiti State is high, and its predictors include advancing age, hypertension, education, and occupation. Background: There are traditional barriers to accessing quality hypertension care in sub-Saharan Africa. Mobile phone technology is increasingly being used to overcome these barriers. This study assessed smartphone ownership and the willingness to receive mobile health services among patients with hypertension in Nigeria., Methods: Four hundred and twenty-seven (427) patients with hypertension were recruited from two tertiary health institutions in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were fed into the Open Data Kit form, which was used to take data on mobile phone ownership, the willingness to receive and the preferred type of mobile phone-based hypertension health care services., Results: Males were 37.2%. Mean age was 60.6 ± 15.3 years. Of the participants, 48.7% owned smartphones, 21.1% had regular internet subscription on their phones, 94.8% were willing to receive and pay mobile health services. Phone calls (48.0%) and text messages (31.6%) were the most preferred modes of receiving hypertension-related health education. Age category of 45-64 years was the only predictor of willingness to receive mobile health services., Conclusion: All our participants owned mobile phones, with 48.7% being smartphones and almost all the participants were willing to receive and pay for mobile health services for prevention, treatment and information on hypertension. Middle age was the only predictor of willingness to receive mobile health, and the most preferred choices were through phone calls and text messages. Background: Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness (BPCR) is a key component of safe motherhood programs to reduce maternal mortality. It promotes active preparation and decision-making for delivery by pregnant women and their families., Objective: The study determined knowledge of danger signs and practice of BPCR among pregnant women., Methods: The study was a cross-sectional survey conducted among 400 pregnant women attending Antenatal clinic at a tertiary health facility in Nigeria. Semi-structured, selfadministered questionnaire was used in collecting data. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 was used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, sample mean, frequency tables were done. Inferential statistics were used to test for associations between categorical variables. P-value < 0.05., Results: The mean age of the respondents was 29.7±4.2, with most respondents between the age bracket of 21-30 years. About 384 (96.0%) of respondents had post-secondary or tertiary education. About 297 (74.3%) of respondents had good knowledge of warning and danger signs during pregnancy. On the overall less than half 187 (46.8%) of respondents had good practices of BPCR. Knowledge of danger signs and practice of BRCR was significantly associated with the level of education p-value <0.05., Conclusion: The study concluded that most respondents in the study area had good knowledge about the danger signs in pregnancy but their practices of birth preparedness was below average. Metastasis accounts for the majority of all cancer deaths, yet the process remains poorly understood. A pivotal step in the metastasis process is the exiting of tumor cells from the circulation, a process known as extravasation. However, it is unclear how tumor cells extravasate and whether multicellular clusters of tumor cells possess the ability to exit as a whole or must first disassociate. In this study, we use in vivo zebrafish and mouse models to elucidate the mechanism tumor cells use to extravasate. We found that circulating tumor cells exit the circulation using the recently identified extravasation mechanism, angiopellosis, and do so as both clusters and individual cells. We further show that when melanoma and cervical cancer cells utilize this extravasation method to exit as clusters, they exhibit an increased ability to form tumors at distant sites through the expression of unique genetic profiles.
