9. Adsorption of cationic dye from aqueous solution using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs).

Abstract

In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared using the microwave-assisted organic synthesis method for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB), a cationic dye, from aqueous solutions. The preparation of dye-MIP was carried using methacrylic acid (MAA) as monomers, divinyl benzene (DVB) as a cross-linker and acetonitrile as a porogen. The control polymer materials, i.e. the NIPs, were also prepared in a similar way to that of the MIPs preparation, but without the MB molecule as a template. The characterization of both the obtained NIPs and dye-MIPs was achieved by FTIR, SEM and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Finally, both the obtained NIPs and dyeMIPs were used for the adsorption of MB from aqueous solutions using the batch adsorption technique. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as contact time, pH, adsorbent dosages, initial MB concentration and temperature on the adsorption capacity were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption behavior of both NIPs and dye-MIPs was greatly affected by the pH and initial concentration of MB. The experimental data were also analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models of adsorption. The adsorption of MB onto both NIPs and dye-MIPs is in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm models with the adsorption capacity, which was found to be 33.11 and 40.82 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic parameter data indicated that the MB adsorption process onto dye-MIPs was non spontaneous and exothermic under the experimental conditions, with the values of Gibbs free energy (ΔGo) being in the range of 1.02 to 3.76 kJ mol–1; as well as the values of enthalpy (ΔHo) and entropy (ΔSo) that were found to be –19.35 kJ mol–1 and –68.39 J mol–1, respectively. Moreover, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle-diffusion, and Boyd kinetic models were considered to evaluate the rate parameters. Abstract

The material polymer functionalized on SPE have been developed by ion- imprinted polymer. The ionpolymer with zircon ion as imprint ions were synthesized via bulk polymerization methods by forming binary complex Zr-Xylenol orange in 2-methoxy ethanol and copolymerizing in the presence of styrene as a monomer functional, divinyl benzene as a monomer cross-linker, and peroxide as an initiator. The zircon-imprinted polymer produced the porous polymer. It was indicated that zircon ion imprints were released under conditioning. The polymer particles both prior to and after leaching have been characterized by IR, SEM-EDS, TEM, and pore size. Incorporation of network polymer using divinyl benzene as the cross-linker were performances tested on zircon ion extraction, and the optimum of the mole ratio of styrene/DVB was observed about 1. The decrease of percent extraction of zircon ion when the mole ration of styrene/divinyl benzene < 1, due to the pores as binding sites of polymers were covered, and it was evidenced by the decrease in total pore volume. Abstract

In order to remove mercury ions, Hg(II)-ion-imprinted polymers (Hg-IIPs) with silica core were synthesized by radical polymerization using complexes of Hg(II) ions with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane ligands as a template, vinyltrimethoxysilane as a monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker, in the molar ratio 1: 6: 6. Silica, thiol, vinyl, carbonyl, and Hg(II) in the synthesis process were detected through FTIR, SEM-EDS, TGA, and BET analyses. Using Hg-IIPs as the sorbent, mercury ion removal was near optimal from a batch at pH 4 with an interaction time of 90 min, and gave 62.27 mg.g - 1 adsorption capacity. The capture by Hg-IIPs of Hg(II) ions in the presence of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) ions in quaternary solutions had the selectivity coefficients 46.92 for Hg/Cu, 16.82 for Hg/Cd, and 2.07 for Hg/Pb.

15. Adsorption of ?-sitosterol on molecularly imprinted polymer

Abstract

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) has been synthesized using methacrylate acid (MAA) as a monomer with hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups that can react with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linking agent, and b-sitosterol as a template molecule. After the template was removed from the polymer, MIP_TFMAA was obtained. The MIP was used to adsorb b-sitosterol. The amount of b-sitosterol in solution after the adsorption was determined by HPLC. The results showed that the MIP was able to adsorb well the b-sitosterol at a pH 7 and the contact time of 90 min. The kinetic adsorption data obtained for b-sitosterol followed the pseudo-second-order model and consistent with the model of Feundlich isothermal with the adsorption capacity of 1.05 mg/g. The MIP was selective on b-sitosterol because it was able to adsorb b-sitosterol better than cholesterol.
