While academic freedom is considered a birthright in higher education, the current hysteria surrounding teaching critical race theory in K–12 schools and at universities demonstrates an ongoing resistance to teaching theories that deconstruct and challenge white dominant norms. In prison education spaces, where censorship is common, tailoring education to the needs of those in power in prisons is wrought with ethical grievances. As federal funding for incarcerated students increases, how should higher education institutions navigate topics such as race and racism, when this content is challenged by prison officials? This article explores conceptually the role that higher education programming should have in prison spaces and discusses what is at stake when censorship of race and racism are not actively challenged. A framework is employed, through Ladson-Billings work, that names the ways in which an accrued educational debt is owed to incarcerated students of color that can begin to be repaid through student-centered higher education in prison programming. Additionally, the response of a college in prison organization when faced with prison censorship is highlighted as a path forward to engaging and responding to a growing anti-CRT movement, intended to obscure history and the inequity that people of color face in the United States. Without interrogating the role of college in prison programs, universities without careful consideration of how to address these racialized censorship issues can become a part of the repressive institution that is our current carceral state.

Pen-drawing is an intuitive, convenient, and creative fabrication method for delivering emergent and adaptive design to real devices. To demonstrate the application of pen-drawing to robot construction, we developed pen-drawn Marangoni swimmers that perform complex programmed tasks using a simple and accessible manufacturing process. By simply drawing on substrates using ink-based Marangoni fuel, the swimmers demonstrate advanced robotic motions such as square and star-shaped trajectories, and navigate through maze. The versatility of pen-drawing allows the integration of the swimmers with time-varying substrates, enabling multi-step motion tasks such as cargo delivery and return to the original place. We believe that our pen-based approach will significantly expand the potential applications of miniaturized swimming robots and provide new opportunities for simple robotic implementations.

Background Safety and immunogenicity of 3 doses of BNT162b2 and CoronaVac in adult and pediatric patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) remain unknown. Intradermal vaccination may improve immunogenicity in immunocompromised patients. Our study (NCT04800133) aimed to determine the safety and immunogenicity in patients with IEIs receiving a 3-dose primary series of mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (age 12+) or inactivated whole-virion vaccine CoronaVac (age 3+) in Hong Kong, including Omicron BA.1 neutralization, in a nonrandomized manner. Intradermal vaccination was also studied. Methods Thirty-nine patients were vaccinated, including 16 with homologous intramuscular 0.3ml BNT162b2 and 17 with homologous intramuscular 0.5ml CoronaVac. Two patients received 3 doses of intradermal 0.5ml CoronaVac, and 4 patients received 2 doses of intramuscular BNT162b2 and the third dose with intradermal BNT162b2. Adverse reactions and adverse events were tracked for 7 and 28 days after each dose. Antibody responses assessed included binding IgG antibody to wild-type (WT) spike receptor-binding domain (S-RBD IgG) and surrogate neutralization activity to WT and BA.1 viruses. T cell responses were examined by intracellular cytokine staining following stimulation with SARS-CoV-2 peptide pool(s). Results No safety concerns were identified. Inadequate antibody responses were found after 2 doses in patients with humoral immunodeficiencies and especially so against BA.1. Dose 3 of either vaccine increased S-RBD IgG response. T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 antigens were detected in vaccinated IEI patients. Intradermal third dose vaccine led to high antibody response in 4 patients. Conclusions The primary vaccination series of BNT162b2 and CoronaVac in adults and children with IEIs should include 3 doses for optimal immunogenicity.
