5. Detection of supernova remnants in NGC 4030

Abstract

MUSE-based emission-line maps of the spiral galaxy NGC 4030 reveal the existence of unresolved sources with forbidden line emission enhanced with respect to those seen in its own HII regions. This study reports our efforts to detect and isolate these objects and identify their nature. Candidates are first detected as unresolved sources on an image of the second principal component of the Hb, [OIII]5007, Ha, [NII]6584, [SII]6716, 6731 emission-line data cube, where they stand out clearly against both the dominant HII region population and the widespread diffuse emission. The intrinsic emission is then extracted accounting for the highly inhomogeneous emission-line "background" throughout the field of view. Collisional to recombination line ratios like [SII]/Ha, [NII]/Ha, and [OI]/Ha tend to increase when the background emission is corrected for. We find that many (but not all) sources detected with the principal component analysis have properties compatible with supernova remnants (SNRs). Applying a combined [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha classification criterion leads to a list of 59 sources with SNR-like emission lines. Many of them exhibit conspicuous spectral signatures of SNRs around 7300 Angs, and a stacking analysis shows that these features are also present, except weaker, in other cases. At nearly 30 Mpc, these are the most distant SNRs detected by optical means to date. Abstract

Stellar population studies of early-type galaxies (ETGs) based on their optical stellar continuum suggest that these are quiescent systems. However, emission lines and ultraviolet photometry reveal a diverse population. We use a new version of the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code and state-of-the-art stellar population models to simultaneously fit SDSS spectra and GALEX photometry for a sample of 3453 galaxies at $z < 0.1$ with $NUV-r > 5$ that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. We reproduce $FUV$ magnitudes for 80 per cent of UV upturn galaxies selected using criteria from the literature, suggesting that additional stellar population ingredients such as binaries and extreme horizontal branch stars may have a limited contribution to the UV upturn. The addition of ultraviolet data leads to a broadening of the distributions of mean stellar ages, metallicities and attenuation. Stellar populations younger than $1\,$Gyr are required to reproduce the ultraviolet emission in 17 per cent of our sample. These systems represent 43 per cent of the sample at $5

15. Janusia longibracteolata(Malpighiaceae), a new endemic species from semideciduous forests, Brazil

Abstract

Janusiais a South American genus of flowering plants. Most of its 15 described species are centered in Brazil, where they are found in diverse habitats across the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes, and a few other species can be found in the Atlantic Forest region. This paper describes Janusia longibracteolata,a new species endemic to semideciduous forests in the state of Bahia, Brazil, at elevations of 900 to 1000 m. This study was based on fieldwork and a study of herbarium collections, which resulted in photos, dried preserved material, and information about the new species and its environment. The most notable morphological characters that distinguish the new species are its subulate floral bracts and bracteoles, which are the largest known in the genus. This new species is described, illustrated, and compared with the other species in Janusia. This novelty underscores the need to preserve Bahia's remaining semideciduous forests and to increase botanical exploration in this region.

17. Unravelling the Homology between Calycine Glands in Malpighiales: New Data from Basal Malpighiaceae.

Abstract

Discussing homology relationships among secretory structures remains a relatively underexplored area in botanical research. These structures are widely dispersed within Malpighiales, one of the largest orders of eudicots. Within Malpighiales, both extranuptial and nuptial nectaries are present, and they do not seem homoplastic or share evolutionary connections. Particularly in Malpighiaceae, extensive research has focused on the ecological interactions mediated by glands. Botanists largely agree that elaiophores in sepals of Neotropical Malpighiaceae have evolved from extrafloral nectaries on leaves. However, the evolutionary origin of elaiophores has yet to be thoroughly examined, particularly in comparison to outgroups. This study provides empirical evidence on the ontogeny of elaiophores and investigates their evolutionary origins and homology relationships across different lineages of Malpighiales using comparative anatomy. Our findings suggest that elaiophores are likely homologous to extranuptial nectaries found in sepals of other Malpighiales lineages, originating from nectaries on leaves. This discussion is a starting point for future studies exploring the evolution of nectaries found in flowers, whether extranuptial or nuptial, and their potential origins from nectaries in vegetative organs such as leaves. Abstract

The Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) is an ongoing 3D spectroscopic survey of 600 nearby galaxies of all kinds. This pioneer survey is providing valuable clues on how galaxies form and evolve. Processed through spectral synthesis techniques, CALIFA datacubes allow us to, for the first time, spatially resolve the star formation history of galaxies spread across the color-magnitude diagram. The richness of this approach is already evident from the results obtained for the first 107 galaxies. Here we show how the different galactic spatial sub-components ("bulge" and "disk") grow their stellar mass over time. We explore the results stacking galaxies in mass bins, finding that, except at the lowest masses, galaxies grow inside-out, and that the growth rate depends on a galaxy's mass. The growth rate of inner and outer regions differ maximally at intermediate masses. We also find a good correlation between the age radial gradient and the stellar mass density, suggesting that the local density is a main driver of galaxy evolution., Comment: IAU Symposium No. 295; 4 pages, 3 figures

47. Merianthera calyptrata sp. nov. (Melastomataceae, Myrtales), a new candelabriform species from Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract

Merianthera is a genus of flowering plants with up to now seven species occurring in eastern Brazil, in the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Minas Gerais. It belongs to the tribe Pyramieae (Melastomataceae), and can be recognized by its shrubby or treelet habit with caducous leaves, 5-merous flowers with a strongly zygomorphic androecium, the latter with dimorphic stamens bearing complex dorsal connective appendages, as well as an inferior ovary and capsular fruits. We describe here a new species of Merianthera from two collections and a photographic record, all from the same locality, an inselberg in the Municipality of Jacinto, in northeastern Minas Gerais. Its candelabriform habit, with a fistulose stem, and solitary, axillary or cauliflorous flowers are only shared with M. burlemarxii. However, M. calyptrata R.Goldenb., Bochorny & Fraga sp. nov. has at least three characters that are absent in M. burlemarxii and all other species in the genus: the total absence of both a peduncle and bracteoles, the calyptrate calyx and the fruits developing from inferior ovaries and dehiscing through longitudinal slits. The first character appears to be unknown in other species in the family.
