Emissions from agricultural sources substantially contribute to global warming. The inverse dispersion method (IDM) has been successfully used for emission measurements from various agricultural sources. The IDM has also been validated in multiple studies with artificial gas releases mostly in open fields. Release experiments from buildings have rarely been conducted and were partly affected by additional nearby sources of the target gas. Specific release studies for naturally ventilated animal housings are lacking. In this study, a known and predefined amount of methane (CH4) was released from an artificial source inside a barn that mimicked a naturally ventilated dairy housing, and IDM recovery rates, using a backward Lagrangian stochastic (bLS) model, were determined. For concentration measurements, open-path devices (OPs) with a path length of 110 m were placed in a downwind direction of the barn at fetches of 2.0h, 5.3h, 8.6h, and 12h (h equals the height of the highest obstacle), and a 3D ultrasonic anemometer (UA) was placed in the middle of the first three OP paths. Upwind of the barn, an additional OP and a UA were installed. The median IDM recovery rates determined with the UA placed upwind of the barn and the downwind OP ranged between 0.55–0.75. It is concluded that, for the present study case, the effect of the building and a tree in the main wind axis led to a systematic underestimation of the IDM-derived emission rate probably due to deviations in the wind field and turbulent dispersion from the underlying assumptions of the used dispersion model.

Abstract Background While potential risk factors for multiple sclerosis (MS) have been extensively researched, it remains unclear how persons with MS theorize about their MS. Such theories may affect mental health and treatment adherence. Using natural language processing techniques, we investigated large-scale text data about theories that persons with MS have about the causes of their disease. We examined the topics into which their theories could be grouped and the prevalence of each theory topic. Methods A total of 486 participants of the Swiss MS Registry longitudinal citizen science project provided text data on their theories about the etiology of MS. We used the transformer-based BERTopic Python library for topic modeling to identify underlying topics. We then conducted an in-depth characterization of the topics and assessed their prevalence. Results The topic modeling analysis identifies 19 distinct topics that participants theorize as causal for their MS. The topics most frequently cited are Mental Distress (31.5%), Stress (Exhaustion, Work) (29.8%), Heredity/Familial Aggregation (27.4%), and Diet, Obesity (16.0%). The 19 theory topics can be grouped into four high-level categories: physical health (mentioned by 56.2% of all participants), mental health (mentioned by 53.7%), risk factors established in the scientific literature (genetics, Epstein-Barr virus, smoking, vitamin D deficiency/low sunlight exposure; mentioned by 47.7%), and fate/coincidence (mentioned by 3.1%). Our study highlights the importance of mental health issues for theories participants have about the causes of their MS. Conclusions Our findings emphasize the importance of communication between healthcare professionals and persons with MS about the pathogenesis of MS, the scientific evidence base and mental health.

Aim: We compared the effectiveness of teclistamab versus real-world physicians choice of therapy (RWPC) in triple-class exposed relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. Materials & methods: MajesTEC-1 eligibility criteria were applied to the RWPC cohort. Baseline covariate imbalances were adjusted using inverse probability of treatment weighting. Overall survival, progression-free survival and time to next treatment were compared. Results: After inverse probability of treatment weighting, baseline characteristics were similar between cohorts (teclistamab, n = 165; RWPC, n = 364 [766 observations]). BackgroundThe influence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and blood pressure (BP) on brain lesions and cognitive function is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of BP with different types of brain lesions and cognitive decline in patients with AF.MethodsOverall, 1,213 AF patients underwent standardized brain magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and after 2 years, as well as yearly neurocognitive testing. BP was measured at baseline and categorized according to guidelines. New lesions were defined as new or enlarged brain lesions after 2 years. We defined cognitive decline using three different neurocognitive tests. Logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to examine the associations of BP with new brain lesions and cognitive decline.ResultsThe mean age was 71 ± 8.4 years, 74% were male and mean BP was 135 ± 18/79 ± 12 mmHg. New ischemic lesions and white matter lesions were found in 5.4% and 18.4%, respectively. After multivariable adjustment, BP was not associated with the presence of new brain lesions after 2 years. There was no association between BP and cognitive decline over a median follow-up of 6 years when using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment or Digit Symbol Substitution Test. However, BP categories were inversely associated with cognitive decline using the Semantic Fluency Test, with the strongest association in patients with hypertension grade 1 [Hazard Ratio (95% Confidence Interval) 0.57(0.42 to 0.77)], compared to patients with optimal BP (p for linear trend: 0.025).ConclusionsIn a large cohort of AF patients, there was no association between BP and incidence of brain lesions after 2 years. Also, there was no consistent association between BP and cognitive decline over a follow-up of 6 years. Abstract Transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that is portable and easy to use. Long-term, home-based treatments with tSMS of the supplementary motor area (SMA) are promising for movement disorders and other brain diseases. The aim of the present work was to investigate the potential of SMA-tSMS for reducing corticospinal excitability. We completed an open pilot study in which twenty right-handed healthy subjects (8 females; age: 31.3 ± 5.4 years) completed two 30-min sessions (at least one week apart) of SMA-tSMS. We assessed corticospinal excitability by applying transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the primary motor cortex, recording 30 motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from either the left or right first dorsal interosseous (FDI, ‘hotspot’ muscle) and extensor carpi radialis (ECR, ‘offspot’ muscle) in each session before and after (up to 30 min) tSMS. We observed moderate-to-extreme level of Bayesian evidence for a reduction of MEP amplitude after 30 min of tSMS over SMA compared to baseline. Thus, tSMS applied over SMA may reduce corticospinal excitability. These findings, if confirmed with double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments, support the potential of targeting the SMA for neuromodulating a large motor network in future therapeutic applications of tSMS.

Adsorption and desorption of gases on liquid or solid substrates are involved in multiphase processes and heterogeneous chemical reactions. The desorption energy (Edes0), which depends on the intermolecular forces between adsorbate and substrate, determines the residence time of chemical species at interfaces. We show how Edes0 and temperature influence the net uptake or release of gas species, the rates of surface–bulk exchange and surface or bulk reactions, and the equilibration timescales of gas–particle partitioning. Using literature data, we derive a parameterization to estimate Edes0 for a wide range of chemical species based on the molecular mass, polarizability, and oxygen-to-carbon ratio of the desorbing species independent of substrate-specific properties, which is possible because of the dominant role of the desorbing species' properties. Correlations between Edes0 and the enthalpies of vaporization and solvation are rooted in molecular interactions. The relation between Edes0 and desorption kinetics reflects the key role of interfacial exchange in multiphase processes. For small molecules and semi-volatile organics (VOC, IVOC, SVOC), Edes0 values around 10–100 kJ mol−1 correspond to desorption lifetimes around nanoseconds to days at room temperature. Even higher values up to years are obtained at low temperatures and for low volatile organic compounds (LVOC, ELVOC/ULVOC) relevant for secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Implications are discussed for SOA formation, gas–particle partitioning, organic phase changes, and indoor surface chemistry. We expect these insights to advance the mechanistic and kinetic understanding of multiphase processes in atmospheric and environmental physical chemistry, aerosol science, materials science, and chemical engineering.

Abstract Switzerland’s livestock production causes high environmental costs and depends strongly on feed imports. While plant-based protein demand increases, the local grain legume production is negligible ( ~ 9000 hectares). Here, we investigated the potential of sustainable legume protein production based on an expert survey followed by a quantitative analysis based on yield, soil, terrain and climate data. Pea, soybean and faba bean showed high potential for Swiss agriculture given adaptions in policy, pricing and breeding. The potential grain legume production area was 107,734 hectares on suitable arable land (Scenario I). Switzerland’s self-sufficiency could be increased by cutting imports and maximizing legume production on 181,479 hectares (Scenario II) in expense of grassland and fodder maize. This would replace approximately 41% of animal protein consumption with plant-based protein, preserving 32% of milk and 24% of meat protein. In conclusion, domestic legume production could be substantially increased while improving human and environmental health.

Wie auch im Zusammenhang mit anderen verwandten Geschäften – man denke etwa an die Transparenzinitiative – beharrt der Ständerat auf den Besonderheiten des Milizparlaments sowie auf dem Schutz der Privatsphäre. Wie der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt, entfernt sich das Parlament mit dieser Argumentation immer mehr von den Wählerinteressen – und damit von seinem verfassungsrechtlichen Auftrag, wonach es nur vom Volk abhängig sein darf.

Summary: Our objective was to update a clinical practice guideline for the prevention and treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in pediatric patients with cancer and hematopoietic cell transplantation recipients. We reconvened an international multi-disciplinary panel. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the prevention or treatment of CDI in any population was updated and identified 31 new RCTs. Strong recommendations were made to use either oral metronidazole or oral vancomycin for non-severe CDI treatment, and to use either oral vancomycin or oral fidaxomicin for severe CDI. A strong recommendation that fecal microbiota transplantation should not be routinely used to treat CDI was also made. The panel made two new good practice statements to follow infection control practices including isolation in patients experiencing CDI, and to minimize systemic antibacterial administration where feasible, especially in patients who have experienced CDI.

The role of the inert processing gas during the powder bed fusion of metals using a laser beam (PBF-LB/M) is to prevent oxidation and remove process by-products, such as metal vapor and spatter particles. The present study aims to unveil additional impacts of using argon (Ar), helium (He), and two mixtures thereof as the processing gas on the material properties of a high-strength Al–Cu–Li–Ti alloy fabricated by PBF-LB/M. The part density, microstructure, static tensile properties, and volatile element evaporation were characterized as functions of the processing gas. Decreased porosity levels and increased melt penetration depths were found across a range of processing parameters when increasing the fraction of He in Ar indicating a more stable process and melt pool dynamics. A trend towards increasing yield and ultimate tensile strength was also observed and was attributed to a slightly refined grain size when processing under He-containing gases. The process gas had no significant influence on the evaporation of alloying constituents in the material. Overall, several advantages of using He-containing process gases over pure Ar in PBF-LB/M are demonstrated and discussed.© 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Summary: Background: In cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging parametric T1 mapping lacks universally valid reference values. This limits its extensive use in the clinical routine. The aim of this work was the introduction of our self-developed Magnetic Resonance Imaging Software for Standardization (MARISSA) as a post-hoc standardisation approach. Methods: Our standardisation approach minimises the bias of confounding parameters (CPs) on the base of regression models. 214 healthy subjects with 814 parametric T1 maps were used for training those models on the CPs: age, gender, scanner and sequence. The training dataset included both sex, eleven different scanners and eight different sequences. The regression model type and four other adjustable standardisation parameters were optimised among 240 tested settings to achieve the lowest coefficient of variation, as measure for the inter-subject variability, in the mean T1 value across the healthy test datasets (HTE, N = 40, 156 T1 maps). The HTE were then compared to 135 patients with left ventricular hypertrophy including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM, N = 112, 121 T1 maps) and amyloidosis (AMY, N = 24, 24 T1 maps) after applying the best performing standardisation pipeline (BPSP) to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy. Findings: The BPSP reduced the COV of the HTE from 12.47% to 5.81%. Sensitivity and specificity reached 95.83% / 91.67% between HTE and AMY, 71.90% / 72.44% between HTE and HCM, and 87.50% / 98.35% between HCM and AMY. Interpretation: Regarding the BPSP, MARISSA enabled the comparability of T1 maps independently of CPs while keeping the discrimination of healthy and patient groups as found in literature. Abstract Tissues are complex environments where different cell types are in constant interaction with each other and with non-cellular components. Preserving the spatial context during proteomics analyses of tissue samples has become an important objective for different applications, one of the most important being the investigation of the tumor microenvironment. Here, we describe a multiplexed protein biomarker detection method on the COMET instrument, coined sequential ImmunoFluorescence (seqIF). The fully automated method uses successive applications of antibody incubation and elution, and in-situ imaging enabled by an integrated microscope and a microfluidic chip that provides optimized optical access to the sample. We show seqIF data on different sample types such as tumor and healthy tissue, including 40-plex on a single tissue section that is obtained in less than 24 h, using off-the-shelf antibodies. We also present extensive characterization of the developed method, including elution efficiency, epitope stability, repeatability and reproducibility, signal uniformity, and dynamic range, in addition to marker and panel optimization strategies. The streamlined workflow using off-the-shelf antibodies, data quality enabling downstream analysis, and ease of reaching hyperplex levels make seqIF suitable for immune-oncology research and other disciplines requiring spatial analysis, paving the way for its adoption in clinical settings.

Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.
