The 3D point cloud (3DPC) has significantly evolved and benefited from the advance of deep learning (DL). However, the latter faces various issues, including the lack of data or annotated data, the existence of a significant gap between training data and test data, and the requirement for high computational resources. To that end, deep transfer learning (DTL), which decreases dependency and costs by utilizing knowledge gained from a source data/task in training a target data/task, has been widely investigated. Numerous DTL frameworks have been suggested for aligning point clouds obtained from several scans of the same scene. Additionally, DA, which is a subset of DTL, has been modified to enhance the point cloud data's quality by dealing with noise and missing points. Ultimately, fine-tuning and DA approaches have demonstrated their effectiveness in addressing the distinct difficulties inherent in point cloud data. This paper presents the first review shedding light on this aspect. it provides a comprehensive overview of the latest techniques for understanding 3DPC using DTL and domain adaptation (DA). Accordingly, DTL's background is first presented along with the datasets and evaluation metrics. A well-defined taxonomy is introduced, and detailed comparisons are presented, considering different aspects such as different knowledge transfer strategies, and performance. The paper covers various applications, such as 3DPC object detection, semantic labeling, segmentation, classification, registration, downsampling/upsampling, and denoising. This review article discusses the roles of federated learning (FL) and transfer learning (TL) in cancer detection based on image analysis. These two strategies powered by machine learning have drawn a lot of attention due to their potential to increase the precision and effectiveness of cancer diagnosis in light of the growing importance of machine learning techniques in cancer detection. FL enables the training of machine learning models on data distributed across multiple sites without the need for centralized data sharing, while TL allows for the transfer of knowledge from one task to another. A comprehensive assessment of the two methods, including their strengths, and weaknesses is presented. Moving on, their applications in cancer detection are discussed, including potential directions for the future. Finally, this article offers a thorough description of the functions of TL and FL in image-based cancer detection. The authors also make insightful suggestions for additional study in this rapidly developing area.

Machine learning has revolutionized the field of agricultural science, particularly in the early detection and management of plant diseases, which are crucial for maintaining crop health and productivity. Leveraging advanced algorithms and imaging technologies, researchers are now able to identify and classify plant diseases with unprecedented accuracy and speed. Effective management of tomato diseases is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity. The development and application of tomato disease classification methods are central to this objective. This paper introduces a cutting-edge technique for the detection and classification of tomato leaf diseases, utilizing insights from the latest pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. We propose a sophisticated approach within the domain of tensor subspace learning, known as Higher-Order Whitened Singular Value Decomposition (HOWSVD), designed to boost the discriminatory power of the system. Our approach to Tensor Subspace Learning is methodically executed in two phases, beginning with HOWSVD and culminating in Multilinear Discriminant Analysis (MDA). The efficacy of this innovative method was rigorously tested through comprehensive experiments on two distinct datasets, namely PlantVillage and the Taiwan dataset. The findings reveal that HOWSVD-MDA outperforms existing methods, underscoring its capability to markedly enhance the precision and dependability of diagnosing tomato leaf diseases. Nowadays, there has been a growing trend in the fields of high-energy physics (HEP) in its both parts experimental and phenomenological studies, to incorporate machine learning (ML) and its specialized branch, deep learning (DL). This review paper provides a thorough illustration of these applications using different DL approaches. The first part of the paper examines the basics of various particle physics types and sets up guidelines for assessing particle physics alongside the available learning models. Next, a detailed classification is provided for representing the jet images that are reconstructed in high energy collisions mainly with proton-proton collisions at well defined beam energies, covering various datasets, preprocessing techniques, and feature extraction and selection methods. The presented techniques can be applied to future hadron-hadron colliders (HLC) such as high luminosity LHC (HL-HLC) and future circular collider-hadron-hadron (FCC-hh). Next, the authors explore a number of AI models analysis designed specifically for images in HEP. We additionally undertake a closer look at the classification associated with images in hadron collisions, with an emphasis on Jets. In this review, we look into various state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques in ML and DL, examining their implications for HEP demands. More precisely, this discussion tackles various applications in extensive detail, such as Jet tagging, Jet tracking, particle classification, and more. The review concludes with an analysis of the current state of HEP, using DL methodologies. It covers the challenges and potential areas for future research that will be illustrated for each application.

Anomaly detection in sport facilities has gained significant attention due to its potential to promote energy saving and optimizing operational efficiency. In this research article, we investigate the role of machine learning, particularly deep learning, in anomaly detection for sport facilities. We explore the challenges and perspectives of utilizing deep learning methods for this task, aiming to address the drawbacks and limitations of conventional approaches. Our proposed approach involves feature extraction from the data collected in sport facilities. We present a problem formulation using Deep Feedforward Neural Networks (DFNN) and introduce threshold estimation techniques to identify anomalies effectively. Furthermore, we propose methods to reduce false alarms, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of anomaly detection. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct experiments on aquatic center dataset at Qatar University. The results demonstrate the superiority of our deep learning-based method over conventional techniques, highlighting its potential in real-world applications. This paper discusses the role of Transfer Learning (TL) and transformers in cancer detection based on image analysis. With the enormous evolution of cancer patients, the identification of cancer cells in a patient's body has emerged as a trend in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This process involves analyzing medical images, such as Computed Tomography (CT) scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs), to identify abnormal growths that may help in cancer detection. Many techniques and methods have been realized to improve the quality and performance of cancer classification and detection, such as TL, which allows the transfer of knowledge from one task to another with the same task or domain. TL englobes many methods, particularly those used in image analysis, such as transformers and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models trained on the ImageNet dataset. This paper analyzes and criticizes each method of TL based on image analysis and compares the results of each method, showing that transformers have achieved the best results with an accuracy of 97.41% for colon cancer detection and 94.71% for Histopathological Lung cancer. The paper further delves into the customization and fine-tuning of ChatGPT, its integration with knowledge bases, and the consequent challenges and ethical considerations that arise. Through real-world applications in domains such as online shopping, healthcare, and education, we underscore the transformative potential of chatbots. However, we also spotlight open challenges and suggest future research directions, emphasizing the need for optimizing conversational flow, advancing dialogue mechanics, improving domain adaptability, and enhancing ethical considerations. The research culminates in a call for further exploration in ensuring transparent, ethical, and user-centric chatbot systems.

The surveillance of indoor air quality is paramount for ensuring environmental safety, a task made increasingly viable due to advancements in technology and the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning (DL) tools. This paper introduces an intelligent system dedicated to monitoring air quality and categorizing activities within indoor environments using a DL approach based on 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNNs). Our system integrates six diverse sensors to gather measurement parameters, which subsequently train a 1D CNN model for activity recognition. This proposed model boasts a lightweight and edge-deployable design, rendering it ideal for real-time applications. We conducted our experiments utilizing an air quality dataset specifically designed for Activity of Daily Living (ADL) classification. Computer Vision (CV) is playing a significant role in transforming society by utilizing machine learning (ML) tools for a wide range of tasks. However, the need for large-scale datasets to train ML models creates challenges for centralized ML algorithms. The massive computation loads required for processing and the potential privacy risks associated with storing and processing data on central cloud servers put these algorithms under severe strain. To address these issues, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising solution, allowing privacy preservation by training models locally and exchanging them to improve overall performance. Additionally, the computational load is distributed across multiple clients, reducing the burden on central servers. This paper presents, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first review discussing recent advancements of FL in CV applications, comparing them to conventional centralized training paradigms. It provides an overview of current FL applications in various CV tasks, emphasizing the advantages of FL and the challenges of implementing it in CV. To facilitate this, the paper proposes a taxonomy of FL techniques in CV, outlining their applications and security threats. It also discusses privacy concerns related to implementing blockchain in FL schemes for CV tasks and summarizes existing privacy preservation methods. Steganography and steganalysis are two interrelated aspects of the field of information security. Steganography seeks to conceal communications, whereas steganalysis is aimed to either find them or even, if possible, recover the data they contain. Steganography and steganalysis have attracted a great deal of interest, particularly from law enforcement. Steganography is often used by cybercriminals and even terrorists to avoid being captured while in possession of incriminating evidence, even encrypted, since cryptography is prohibited or restricted in many countries. Therefore, knowledge of cutting-edge techniques to uncover concealed information is crucial in exposing illegal acts. Over the last few years, a number of strong and reliable steganography and steganalysis techniques have been introduced in the literature. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of deep learning-based steganalysis techniques used to detect hidden information within digital media. The paper covers all types of cover in steganalysis, including image, audio, and video, and discusses the most commonly used deep learning techniques. In addition, the paper explores the use of more advanced deep learning techniques, such as deep transfer learning (DTL) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL), to enhance the performance of steganalysis systems. The paper provides a systematic review of recent research in the field, including data sets and evaluation metrics used in recent studies. It also presents a detailed analysis of DTL-based steganalysis approaches and their performance on different data sets. The review concludes with a discussion on the current state of deep learning-based steganalysis, challenges, and future research directions.

This paper study provides a novel contribution to the field of signal processing and DL for ECG signal analysis by introducing a new feature representation method for ECG signals. The proposed method is based on transforming time frequency 1D vectors into 2D images using Gramian Angular Field transform. Moving on, the classification of the transformed ECG signals is performed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The obtained results show a classification accuracy of 97.47% and 98.65% for anomaly detection. Accordingly, in addition to improving the classification performance compared to the state-of-the-art, the feature representation helps identify and visualize temporal patterns in the ECG signal, such as changes in heart rate, rhythm, and morphology, which may not be apparent in the original signal. Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) algorithms, commonly referred to as load disaggregation algorithms, are fundamental tools for effective energy management. Despite the success of deep models in load disaggregation, they face various challenges, particularly those pertaining to privacy and security. This paper investigates the sensitivity of prominent deep NILM baselines to adversarial attacks, which have proven to be a significant threat in domains such as computer vision and speech recognition. Adversarial attacks entail the introduction of imperceptible noise into the input data with the aim of misleading the neural network into generating erroneous outputs. We investigate the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM), a well-known adversarial attack, to perturb the input sequences fed into two commonly employed CNN-based NILM baselines: the Sequence-to-Sequence (S2S) and Sequence-to-Point (S2P) models. Our findings provide compelling evidence for the vulnerability of these models, particularly the S2P model which exhibits an average decline of 20\% in the F1-score even with small amounts of noise. Such weakness has the potential to generate profound implications for energy management systems in residential and industrial sectors reliant on NILM models.

A filter bubble refers to the phenomenon where Internet customization effectively isolates individuals from diverse opinions or materials, resulting in their exposure to only a select set of content. This can lead to the reinforcement of existing attitudes, beliefs, or conditions. In this study, our primary focus is to investigate the impact of filter bubbles in recommender systems. This pioneering research aims to uncover the reasons behind this problem, explore potential solutions, and propose an integrated tool to help users avoid filter bubbles in recommender systems. To achieve this objective, we conduct a systematic literature review on the topic of filter bubbles in recommender systems. The reviewed articles are carefully analyzed and classified, providing valuable insights that inform the development of an integrated approach. Notably, our review reveals evidence of filter bubbles in recommendation systems, highlighting several biases that contribute to their existence. Moreover, we propose mechanisms to mitigate the impact of filter bubbles and demonstrate that incorporating diversity into recommendations can potentially help alleviate this issue. The findings of this timely review will serve as a benchmark for researchers working in interdisciplinary fields such as privacy, artificial intelligence ethics, and recommendation systems. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has recently become an important challenge when using deep learning (DL). It requires large-scale training datasets and high computational and storage resources. Moreover, DL techniques and machine learning (ML) approaches in general, hypothesize that training and testing data come from the same domain, with the same input feature space and data distribution characteristics. This assumption, however, is not applicable in some real-world artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Moreover, there are situations where gathering real data is challenging, expensive, or rarely occurring, which can not meet the data requirements of DL models. deep transfer learning (DTL) has been introduced to overcome these issues, which helps develop high-performing models using real datasets that are small or slightly different but related to the training data. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of DTL-based ASR frameworks to shed light on the latest developments and helps academics and professionals understand current challenges. Specifically, after presenting the DTL background, a well-designed taxonomy is adopted to inform the state-of-the-art. A critical analysis is then conducted to identify the limitations and advantages of each framework. Moving on, a comparative study is introduced to highlight the current challenges before deriving opportunities for future research.

Consumer's privacy is a main concern in Smart Grids (SGs) due to the sensitivity of energy data, particularly when used to train machine learning models for different services. These data-driven models often require huge amounts of data to achieve acceptable performance leading in most cases to risks of privacy leakage. By pushing the training to the edge, Federated Learning (FL) offers a good compromise between privacy preservation and the predictive performance of these models. The current paper presents an overview of FL applications in SGs while discussing their advantages and drawbacks, mainly in load forecasting, electric vehicles, fault diagnoses, load disaggregation and renewable energies. In addition, an analysis of main design trends and possible taxonomies is provided considering data partitioning, the communication topology, and security mechanisms. Towards the end, an overview of main challenges facing this technology and potential future directions is presented.

Preserving energy in households and office buildings is a significant challenge, mainly due to the recent shortage of energy resources, the uprising of the current environmental problems, and the global lack of utilizing energy-saving technologies. Not to mention, within some regions, COVID-19 social distancing measures have led to a temporary transfer of energy demand from commercial and urban centers to residential areas, causing an increased use and higher charges, and in turn, creating economic impacts on customers. Therefore, the marketplace could benefit from developing an internet of things (IoT) ecosystem that monitors energy consumption habits and promptly recommends action to facilitate energy efficiency. This paper aims to present the full integration of a proposed energy efficiency framework into the Home-Assistant platform using an edge-based architecture. End-users can visualize their consumption patterns as well as ambient environmental data using the Home-Assistant user interface. More notably, explainable energy-saving recommendations are delivered to end-users in the form of notifications via the mobile application to facilitate habit change. Recommender systems have been widely used in different application domains including energy-preservation, e-commerce, healthcare, social media, etc. Such applications require the analysis and mining of massive amounts of various types of user data, including demographics, preferences, social interactions, etc. in order to develop accurate and precise recommender systems. Such datasets often include sensitive information, yet most recommender systems are focusing on the models' accuracy and ignore issues related to security and the users' privacy. Despite the efforts to overcome these problems using different risk reduction techniques, none of them has been completely successful in ensuring cryptographic security and protection of the users' private information. To bridge this gap, the blockchain technology is presented as a promising strategy to promote security and privacy preservation in recommender systems, not only because of its security and privacy salient features, but also due to its resilience, adaptability, fault tolerance and trust characteristics. Fall detection is a serious healthcare issue that needs to be solved. Falling without quick medical intervention would lower the chances of survival for the elderly, especially if living alone. Hence, the need is there for developing fall detection algorithms with high accuracy. This paper presents a novel IoT-based system for fall detection that includes a sensing device transmitting data to a mobile application through a cloud-connected gateway device. Then, the focus is shifted to the algorithmic aspect where multiple features are extracted from 3-axis accelerometer data taken from existing datasets. The results emphasize on the significance of Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) as an influential feature for determining falls. CWT, Signal Energy (SE), Signal Magnitude Area (SMA), and Signal Vector Magnitude (SVM) features have shown promising classification results using K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and E-Nearest Neighbors (ENN). For all performance metrics (accuracy, recall, precision, specificity, and F1 Score), the achieved results are higher than 95% for a dataset of small size, while more than 98.47% score is achieved in the aforementioned criteria over the UniMiB-SHAR dataset by the same algorithms, where the classification time for a single test record is extremely efficient and is real-time, Comment: 30 Pages, 9 figures, 9 tables. Recommender systems have significantly developed in recent years in parallel with the witnessed advancements in both internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Accordingly, as a consequence of IoT and AI, multiple forms of data are incorporated in these systems, e.g. social, implicit, local and personal information, which can help in improving recommender systems' performance and widen their applicability to traverse different disciplines. On the other side, energy efficiency in the building sector is becoming a hot research topic, in which recommender systems play a major role by promoting energy saving behavior and reducing carbon emissions. However, the deployment of the recommendation frameworks in buildings still needs more investigations to identify the current challenges and issues, where their solutions are the keys to enable the pervasiveness of research findings, and therefore, ensure a large-scale adoption of this technology. Accordingly, this paper presents, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first timely and comprehensive reference for energy-efficiency recommendation systems through (i) surveying existing recommender systems for energy saving in buildings; (ii) discussing their evolution; (iii) providing an original taxonomy of these systems based on specified criteria, including the nature of the recommender engine, its objective, computing platforms, evaluation metrics and incentive measures; and (iv) conducting an in-depth, critical analysis to identify their limitations and unsolved issues. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is a key cost-effective technology for monitoring power consumption and contributing to several challenges encountered when transiting to an efficient, sustainable, and competitive energy efficiency environment. This paper proposes a smart NILM system based on a novel local power histogramming (LPH) descriptor, in which appliance power signals are transformed into 2D space and short histograms are extracted to represent each device. Specifically, short local histograms are drawn to represent individual appliance consumption signatures and robustly extract appliance-level data from the aggregated power signal. Furthermore, an improved k-nearest neighbors (IKNN) algorithm is presented to reduce the learning computation time and improve the classification performance. This results in highly improving the discrimination ability between appliances belonging to distinct categories. A deep evaluation of the proposed LPH-IKNN based solution is investigated under different data sets, in which the proposed scheme leads to promising performance. An accuracy of up to 99.65% and 98.51% has been achieved on GREEND and UK-DALE data sets, respectively. While an accuracy of more than 96% has been attained on both WHITED and PLAID data sets. Human population are striving against energy-related issues that not only affects society and the development of the world, but also causes global warming. A variety of broad approaches have been developed by both industry and the research community. However, there is an ever increasing need for comprehensive, end-to-end solutions aimed at transforming human behavior rather than device metrics and benchmarks. In this paper, a micro-moment-based smart plug system is proposed as part of a larger multi-appliance energy efficiency program. The smart plug, which includes two sub-units: the power consumption unit and environmental monitoring unit collect energy consumption of appliances along with contextual information, such as temperature, humidity, luminosity and room occupancy respectively. The plug also allows home automation capability. With the accompanying mobile application, end-users can visualize energy consumption data along with ambient environmental information. In spite of the substantial advance in developing energy-efficient buildings, power demand in the building sector is still remarkably growing due to teleworking and e-learning triggered by the COVID-19 movement restrictions. This is highlighted by the inefficiency of energy saving measures that have recently been set owing to the the marketability failure and unsuccessful design integration of existing ICT based solutions. Specifically, the factors that affect energy efficiency comprise natural and socio-economic restrictions, technological advances, and last but not least the human behavior. Energy efficiency based on behavioral change has attracted an increasing interest in the recent years, unfortunately, solutions in this area suffer from the lack of marketability because of the absence of both prospective studies and consumer awareness. This work, focuses on a key cost-effective technology for monitoring power consumption and for contributing to the behavioral change through smart, personalized, and on the moment, action recommendations. In order to examine the marketability of the proposed solution, we begin with a market and research analysis of the domain of energy efficiency systems in the building sector that target behavioral change. Energy efficiency is a crucial factor in the well-being of our planet. In parallel, Machine Learning (ML) plays an instrumental role in automating our lives and creating convenient workflows for enhancing behavior. So, analyzing energy behavior can help understand weak points and lay the path towards better interventions. Moving towards higher performance, cloud platforms can assist researchers in conducting classification trials that need high computational power. Under the larger umbrella of the Consumer Engagement Towards Energy Saving Behavior by means of Exploiting Micro Moments and Mobile Recommendation Systems (EM)3 framework, we aim to influence consumers behavioral change via improving their power consumption consciousness. In this paper, common cloud artificial intelligence platforms are benchmarked and compared for micro-moment classification. The Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Google Colab, and Microsoft Azure Machine Learning are employed on simulated and real energy consumption datasets. Recommendation systems are intelligent systems that support human decision making, and as such, they have to be explainable in order to increase user trust and improve the acceptance of recommendations. In this work, we focus on a context-aware recommendation system for energy efficiency and develop a mechanism for explainable and persuasive recommendations, which are personalized to user preferences and habits. The persuasive facts either emphasize on the economical saving prospects (Econ) or on a positive ecological impact (Eco) and explanations provide the reason for recommending an energy saving action. Based on a study conducted using a Telegram bot, different scenarios have been validated with actual data and human feedback. Current results show a total increase of 19\% on the recommendation acceptance ratio when both economical and ecological persuasive facts are employed. The environmental change and its effects, caused by human influences and natural ecological processes over the last decade, prove that it is now more prudent than ever to transition to more sustainable models of energy consumption behaviors. User energy consumption is inductively derived from the time-to-time standards of living that shape the user's everyday consumption habits. This work builds on the detection of repeated usage consumption patterns from consumption logs. It presents the structure and operation of an energy consumption reduction system, which employs a set of sensors, smart-meters and actuators in an office environment and targets specific user habits. Using our previous research findings on the value of energy-related micro-moment recommendations, the implemented system is an integrated solution that avoids unnecessary energy consumption. With the use of a messaging API, the system recommends to the user the proper energy saving action at the right moment and gradually shapes user's habits. The solution has been implemented on the Home Assistant open source platform, which allows the definition of automations for controlling the office equipment. Enormous amounts of data are being produced everyday by sub-meters and smart sensors installed in residential buildings. If leveraged properly, that data could assist end-users, energy producers and utility companies in detecting anomalous power consumption and understanding the causes of each anomaly. Therefore, anomaly detection could stop a minor problem becoming overwhelming. Moreover, it will aid in better decision-making to reduce wasted energy and promote sustainable and energy efficient behavior. In this regard, this paper is an in-depth review of existing anomaly detection frameworks for building energy consumption based on artificial intelligence. Specifically, an extensive survey is presented, in which a comprehensive taxonomy is introduced to classify existing algorithms based on different modules and parameters adopted, such as machine learning algorithms, feature extraction approaches, anomaly detection levels, computing platforms and application scenarios. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first review article that discusses anomaly detection in building energy consumption. Moving forward, important findings along with domain-specific problems, difficulties and challenges that remain unresolved are thoroughly discussed, including the absence of: (i) precise definitions of anomalous power consumption, (ii) annotated datasets, (iii) unified metrics to assess the performance of existing solutions, (iv) platforms for reproducibility and (v) privacy-preservation. Following, insights about current research trends are discussed to widen the applications and effectiveness of the anomaly detection technology before deriving future directions attracting significant attention. This paper conveys the importance of using suitable data visualizations for electrical energy consumption and the effect it carries on reducing said consumption. Data visualization tools construct an important pillar in energy micro-moments, i.e., the concept of providing the right information at the right time in the right way for a specific power consumer. Such behavioral change can be triggered with the help of good recommendations and suitable visualizations to convey the right message. A questionnaire is built as a mobile application to evaluate different groups of conventional and novel visualizations. Conventional charts are restricted to bar, line and stacked area charts, while novel visualizations contain heatmap, spiral and appliance-level stacked bar charts. Significant findings gathered from participants' responses indicate that they are slightly inclined towards conventional charts. However, their understanding of the novel charts is better by 8% when the analysis questions are investigated. Identifying domestic appliances in the smart grid leads to a better power usage management and further helps in detecting appliance-level abnormalities. An efficient identification can be achieved only if a robust feature extraction scheme is developed with a high ability to discriminate between different appliances on the smart grid. Accordingly, we propose in this paper a novel method to extract electrical power signatures after transforming the power signal to 2D space, which has more encoding possibilities. Following, an improved local binary patterns (LBP) is proposed that relies on improving the discriminative ability of conventional LBP using a post-processing stage. A binarized eigenvalue map (BEVM) is extracted from the 2D power matrix and then used to post-process the generated LBP representation. Next, two histograms are constructed, namely up and down histograms, and are then concatenated to form the global histogram. A comprehensive performance evaluation is performed on two different datasets, namely the GREEND and WITHED, in which power data were collected at 1 Hz and 44000 Hz sampling rates, respectively. This paper proposes a new appliance identification scheme by introducing a novel approach for extracting highly discriminative characteristic sets that can considerably distinguish between various appliance footprints. In this context, a precise and powerful characteristic projection technique depending on fuzzy-neighbors-preserving analysis based QR-decomposition (FNPA-QR) is applied on the extracted energy consumption time-domain features. The FNPA-QR aims to diminish the distance among the between class features and increase the gap among features of dissimilar categories. Following, a novel bagging decision tree (BDT) classifier is also designed to further improve the classification accuracy. The proposed technique is then validated on three appliance energy consumption datasets, which are collected at both low and high frequency. The practical results obtained point out the outstanding classification rate of the time-domain based FNPA-QR and BDT.

Consciousness about power consumption at the appliance level can assist user in promoting energy efficiency in households. In this paper, a superior non-intrusive appliance recognition method that can provide particular consumption footprints of each appliance is proposed. Electrical devices are well recognized by the combination of different descriptors via the following steps: (a) investigating the applicability along with performance comparability of several time-domain (TD) feature extraction schemes; (b) exploring their complementary features; and (c) making use of a new design of the ensemble bagging tree (EBT) classifier. Consequently, a powerful feature extraction technique based on the fusion of TD features is proposed, namely fTDF, aimed at improving the feature discrimination ability and optimizing the recognition task. An extensive experimental performance assessment is performed on two different datasets called the GREEND and WITHED, where power consumption signatures were gathered at 1 Hz and 44000 Hz sampling frequencies, respectively. In the last decade, extended efforts have been poured into energy efficiency. Several energy consumption datasets were henceforth published, with each dataset varying in properties, uses and limitations. For instance, building energy consumption patterns are sourced from several sources, including ambient conditions, user occupancy, weather conditions and consumer preferences. Thus, a proper understanding of the available datasets will result in a strong basis for improving energy efficiency. Starting from the necessity of a comprehensive review of existing databases, this work is proposed to survey, study and visualize the numerical and methodological nature of building energy consumption datasets. A total of thirty-one databases are examined and compared in terms of several features, such as the geographical location, period of collection, number of monitored households, sampling rate of collected data, number of sub-metered appliances, extracted features and release date. Furthermore, data collection platforms and related modules for data transmission, data storage and privacy concerns used in different datasets are also analyzed and compared. Based on the analytical study, a novel dataset has been presented, namely Qatar university dataset, which is an annotated power consumption anomaly detection dataset. The latter will be very useful for testing and training anomaly detection algorithms, and hence reducing wasted energy. Moving forward, a set of recommendations is derived to improve datasets collection, such as the adoption of multi-modal data collection, smart Internet of things data collection, low-cost hardware platforms and privacy and security mechanisms. Recently, tremendous interest has been devoted to develop data fusion strategies for energy efficiency in buildings, where various kinds of information can be processed. However, applying the appropriate data fusion strategy to design an efficient energy efficiency system is not straightforward; it requires a priori knowledge of existing fusion strategies, their applications and their properties. To this regard, seeking to provide the energy research community with a better understanding of data fusion strategies in building energy saving systems, their principles, advantages, and potential applications, this paper proposes an extensive survey of existing data fusion mechanisms deployed to reduce excessive consumption and promote sustainability. We investigate their conceptualizations, advantages, challenges and drawbacks, as well as performing a taxonomy of existing data fusion strategies and other contributing factors. Following, a comprehensive comparison of the state-of-the-art data fusion based energy efficiency frameworks is conducted using various parameters, including data fusion level, data fusion techniques, behavioral change influencer, behavioral change incentive, recorded data, platform architecture, IoT technology and application scenario. Moreover, a novel method for electrical appliance identification is proposed based on the fusion of 2D local texture descriptors, where 1D power signals are transformed into 2D space and treated as images. The empirical evaluation, conducted on three real datasets, shows promising performance, in which up to 99.68% accuracy and 99.52% F1 score have been attained. In addition, various open research challenges and future orientations to improve data fusion based energy efficiency ecosystems are explored.

A weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery causing a dilation or ballooning of the blood vessel is known as a cerebral aneurysm. Optimal treatment requires fast and accurate diagnosis of the aneurysm. HemeLB is a fluid dynamics solver for complex geometries developed to provide neurosurgeons with information related to the flow of blood in and around aneurysms. On a cost efficient platform, HemeLB could be employed in hospitals to provide surgeons with the simulation results in real-time. In this work, we developed an improved version of HemeLB for GPU implementation and result visualization. A visualization platform for smooth interaction with end users is also presented. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation of this implementation is reported. The results demonstrate that the proposed implementation achieves a maximum performance of 15,168,964 site updates per second, and is capable of speeding up HemeLB for deployment in hospitals and clinical investigations.
