Abstract

This research, entitled “Aesthetics of symbolic images in the collection of the Smell of His Excellency Muhammad Kordo” aims to show the excitement and importance of symbols in building the poet’s poetic text in terms of beauty, pleasure and aesthetics, the research tries to show us the symbols revealed to us by the poet inthem, in order to achieve the beauty that he hides in the unknown form, in order to break the symbols that are the source of artistic and aesthetic images of the texts and attract the attention of the reader to resort to symbols, to understand the purpose of the texts. The result of the research shows the symbolic language expressed to us by the poet through symbols (lengend, heritage, religion, public, color, history, world and himself). This research was based on the method of “analyzing description” and data libraries in this field and has researched and compiled texts, the aim of which is the quality and quantity of the use of symbols in giving aesthetics and poetry in the product ”Smell of Happiness” to the poet.

2. The Problem of Liberal Equality in Contemporary Political Thought Michael Sandel as A Model

Abstract

Building a liberal democratic society has many dimensions, and one of these dimensions is equality, as a philosophical principle, or formal equality as a legal and political principle. Equally, and from a liberal perspective thought; the importance of equality in these societies will be achieved by reducing inequality in conditions, without prejudice to basic freedoms. Equality as a principle emerged through the long debate in western political history, especially in the context of liberal equality. There have been different trends and views in how to achieve equality in liberal societies and apply it to the level of governance practice, self-development and ability level. Thus, this led Michael Sandel to become one of the liberal thinkers, and embark on a study that includes a broad discussion between social liberalism against differences and the dangers these differences pose to social cohesion and political consensus, and between the libertarian tendency against expanding the circle of equality, and the dangers it poses to the freedom of the individual, and liberalism based on individual values and rights, and communitarianism based on group values and rights. Therefore, the different ideas, trends and views within liberal thought on equality are considered as different theories and perceptions about building a just society in political, social, and economic terms.

Abstract

This article sets out to explain how the Sadrist movement targeted ex-combatant communities in their communication strategy to mobilize the Mahdi Army. The Mahdi Army was established by the Sadrist movement under the guidance of Muqtada al-Sadr in 2003. This article proposes that post-2003 Iraq experienced a demobilisation crisis, fostering segments of ex-combatant communities whose ingrained repertoires were prone to paramilitarisation. Contrary to many other paramilitary organisations around the world, the Mahdi Army was formalized through a bottom-up process by non-state actors, and only at a later stage was the Mahdi Army explicitly co-opted by the Iraqi state in 2005. The overarching argument of this article is that social networks with specific assets, skills and history are more vulnerable to paramilitarisation by entrepreneurs of violence than various other networks.

Abstract

Introduction Increased mortality has been demonstrated in older adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but the effect of frailty has been unclear. Methods This multi-centre cohort study involved patients aged 18 years and older hospitalised with COVID-19, using routinely collected data. We used Cox regression analysis to assess the impact of age, frailty and delirium on the risk of inpatient mortality, adjusting for sex, illness severity, inflammation and co-morbidities. We used ordinal logistic regression analysis to assess the impact of age, Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and delirium on risk of increased care requirements on discharge, adjusting for the same variables. Results Data from 5,711 patients from 55 hospitals in 12 countries were included (median age 74, interquartile range [IQR] 54–83; 55.2% male). The risk of death increased independently with increasing age (>80 versus 18–49: hazard ratio [HR] 3.57, confidence interval [CI] 2.54–5.02), frailty (CFS 8 versus 1–3: HR 3.03, CI 2.29–4.00) inflammation, renal disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer, but not delirium. Age, frailty (CFS 7 versus 1–3: odds ratio 7.00, CI 5.27–9.32), delirium, dementia and mental health diagnoses were all associated with increased risk of higher care needs on discharge. The likelihood of adverse outcomes increased across all grades of CFS from 4 to 9. Conclusion Age and frailty are independently associated with adverse outcomes in COVID-19. Risk of increased care needs was also increased in survivors of COVID-19 with frailty or older age.

This book engages with the idea of the Global South through cinema as a concept of resistance; as a space of decolonialisation; and as an arena of virtuality, creativity and change. It opens up a dialogue amongst scholars and filmmakers from the Global South: India, Nigeria, Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, and Egypt.The essays in the volume approach cinema as an intertwined process of both production and perception not divorced from the economic, social, political and cultural. They emphasise film as a visual medium where form, structure and content are not separable. Through a wide array of film-readings, the authors explore the concept of a southern cinematic esthetics, in particular, and the concept of the Global South in general.The volume will be of interest to scholars, students and researchers of film and media studies, critical theory, cultural studies and Global South studies.

Abstract

The chapter provides historical background information on film and politics in Egypt. Cinema in Egypt goes back to the end of the nineteenth century, and it has a long and rich tradition. I will trace the complicated relationship between cinema and the state from the birth of Egyptian national cinema into the Mubarak era. This projection of a historical timeline highlights the persistent conflict between films’ attempts at (re-)presenting socio-political content and the state apparatus’s power of censorship. I will address various examples of films and filmmakers that faced censorship in different phases of recent Egyptian history: the monarchy, the Nasser era, Sadat, and finally the Mubarak era. Examples will be discussed in relation to censorship and, most importantly, in relation to filmmakers’ strategies of representing their socio-political ideas, criticism, and sometimes their attack on the state in terms of filmic language: symbolism, realism, and Egyptian neorealism.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the first eighteen days of the Egyptian uprising in which I apply the definition of counterculture as an assemblage of the war-machine kind. Counterculture is the assemblage in which culture is no longer separated from its active forces and through which the excluded possibilities are empowered and enforced. Counterculture is a social machine of the virtual as opposed to the state which is the owner of the world of actuality. Here, I will focus on the infamous first eighteen days of the uprising. It is the intensity and the rapidness of the events which led to the change in the Egyptian socio-political scenery that make these eighteen days a perfect example of how a war-machine is formed and how it acts. This is also the very period upon which the whole medial and in part some scholarly narrative was built.

Abstract

Answer the questions: Can film be a space in which countercultural flows are articulated and if so, how? What kind of image would be suitable for this articulation? Thus, the chapter engages in an in-depth analysis and close reading of five Egyptian films which were produced between 2010 and 2016: Ahmed Abdallah’s Microphone (2010), Rags and Tatters (2013), Hala Lotfy’s Coming Forth by Day (2013), Tamer El Said’s In the Last Days of the City (2016), and Mohammed Diab’s Clash (2016). Each film will be analyzed through three systematic lenses: (1) Narration, (2) Cinematic Language and the Representation of Reality, and (3) Rebellion. I end Chap. 4 with the section, New Egyptian Cinema, which took shape post-2011. I name a few films produced between 2010 and 2019. This artistic space which had its roots in the long cinematic tradition of Egypt was enabled and enhanced by the uprising.

Abstract

This book examines how film articulates countercultural flows in the context of the Egyptian Revolution. The book interrogates the gap between radical politics and radical aesthetics by analyzing counterculture as a form, drawing upon Egyptian films produced between 2010 and 2016. The work offers a definition of counterculture which liberates the term from its Western frame and establishes a theoretical concept of counterculture which is more globally redolent. The book opens a door for further research of the Arab Uprising, arguing for a new and topical model of rebellion and struggle, and sheds light on the interaction between cinema and the street as well as between cultural narratives and politics in the context of the 2011 Egyptian uprising. What is counterculture in the twenty-first century? What role does cinema play in this new notion of counterculture?

14. Personality study of alcohol, heroin, and polydrug abusers in an Arabian Gulf population

Three male groups of heroin, alcohol, and polydrug abusers (n = 120) from an Arabian Gulf population were given Lanyon's Psychological Screening Inventory; their scores were compared with those of a group of 48 nonabusers. Only the polydrug-abusing group of 43 scored significantly higher than the nonabusers on the Alienation and Discomfort subscales. Perhaps only polydrug abuse can be explained in terms of attempts towards self-medication by distressed and inadequate individuals. A drug-accepting-generational age group in contrast to an alcohol-accepting-generational age group was suggested.

15. Effect of substance abuse on visuographic function

Abstract

The effect of substance abuse on visuographic functions was investigated by comparing 4 groups from an Arabian Gulf population: 63 heroin abusers, 14 alcohol abusers, 43 polydrug abusers, and 48 control subjects. The visuographic function was evaluated using Benton's Revised Visual Retention Test. Analysis of covariance yielded an over-all group effect on both number correct and errors. Assessment of significance of differences between groups showed that the polydrug-abusing group and the heroin-abusing group scored significantly lower than the nonabusing group on number correct. All 3 substance-abusing groups scored significantly higher than the nonabusing group on errors, which seems a better predictor of cognitive impairment. Classification of subjects on the basis of their scores on the Benton test showed that a significant proportion of subjects in each substance-abusing group were classified as impaired. It is concluded that the present findings were consistent with prior reports for European and American subjects.

Abstract

A group of 11 hashish users were compared with 11 controls on a visual sustained attention (vigilance) task. Analysis indicated that hashish use affected subjects' sensitivity. Subjects who used hashish responded in an indiscriminate manner, making more false alarms (8.7) than controls (2.6). The importance of vigilance in the assessment of adverse effects of hashish is discussed.

Abstract

Meningiomas are benign tumors origin from central nervous system. They usually involve cephalic, paravertebral soft tissues, skin and in rare cases in the ear, temporal bone, mandible, foot, lung, and mediastinum. In this case, we report an unusual case of meningioma which placed in the fourth ventricle. A 14-year-old man with seizure and headache referred to our ward. The magnetic resonance imaging reported bilateral acoustic neuroma and fourth ventricle meningioma. The patient was scheduled for total tumor resection and the histopathology revealed psammomatous type of meningioma. The patient discharged with good general status.

18. The Asch Conformity Effect: A Study in Kuwait.

Investigated whether conformity in the experimental setting suggested by Asch was related to American culture and less likely to be replicable elsewhere. Kuwaiti subjects (N=200) were used in replicating the original experiment. Obtained an 'Asch effect' of a comparable magnitude to that of Asch. Individual differences in conformity were evident. 20. Effects of fasting on visual flicker fusion

Abstract

Two experiments are reported which investigated the effects of fasting on visual flicker fusion (VFF). In Exp. 1 the VFF of 40 undergraduate students, 20 men and 20 women, whose mean age was 22.5 yr., was measured in nonfasting conditions 1 to 2 weeks before and in fasting conditions during the Muslim fasting months of Ramadan. In Exp. 2 the VFF of a comparable group of 15 men and 15 women, whose mean age was 23.2 yr., was measured in a different month in both fasting and nonfasting conditions. Subjects were assigned randomly to these two conditions. Analysis shows that fasting reduced VFF significantly in both experiments. This fingding indicates that fasting is likely to reduce perceptual sensitivity. The results were explainted in terms of fatigue and physical exhaustion effects produced by fasting.

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate differences in personality type and sex of subjects on critical flicker frequency (CFF) of normal and problem-children from two secondary schools. Students, 20 problem-children and 20 normal children, were tested on critical flicker frequency. Both sexes were equally represented in the two groups. An Arabic version of Lanyon's Psychological Screening Inventory was given. Individuals in the problem gropu were antisocial in their behaviours and attitudes, extraverted, maladjusted, and had a lot in common with psychiatric patients. A 2-way analysis of variance showed that both sex of subject and type of personality were significantly related to CFF. Boys obtained significantly lower mean CFF than girls and problem-children obtained significantly lower mean CFF than normal children. An interaction of sex of subjects and type of personality with CFF was also found. The results were not as hypothesized and contrary to prior reported findings.

22. Standardization of an Arabic version of Lanyon's Psychological Screening Inventory

Abstract

Lanyon's Psycholgical Screening Inventory was translated into Arabic and applied to a group of 479 males and females whose ages and ranged from 16 to 50 yr. Means, standard deviations, and the pattern of mean differences between the sexes were similar to those reported by Lanyon for the English version. One exception was the Alienation scale on which the mean score of the present subjects was more than one-and-a-half standard deviations above the average. Test-retest reliabilities of the scales were satisfactory. The inventory was applied to special groups including psychiatric patients and prison inmates, and the validities were estimated accordingly. It was concluded that the inventory could be used with Kuwaiti subjects. Further studies were recommended.
