The jarrah forest is a natural ecosystem with significant endemism in the flora and fauna. The forest stands on the western edge of the ancient Great Plateau of Western Australia on the granitic shield of the Yilgarn craton (2.5 Gya). The long-term migration of soluble iron and aluminium led to the formation of bauxite ore. The regolith ore is bound by surficial topsoil and deep pallid zone kaolinite clays, primarily used in land rehabilitation. We investigated the chemical fertility of the substrates, along with key physical properties. We found the capacity of these soils to provide a stable growth medium differed considerably in their ability to retain and supply nutrients. These substrates are deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients. In the topsoil, 15% of total P is plant-available, while in the pallid zone layer, only 1% of total P is available. 31P-NMR showed no organic P in the pallid zone, whereas the topsoil had significant organic P and, consequently, a supply of phosphate ions. This shows the importance of organic P in the topsoil for ecosystem nutrition when inorganic fertilisers are not applied in state-of-the-art restoration schemes.

Forest fragmentation is the main cause of biodiversity loss in the Anthropocene and it is triggering a top-down cascade effect that may influence leaf litter decomposition. However, the link between biodiversity loss and changes in ecosystem processes is not fully understood. We conducted an experiment to evaluate whether the exclusion of vertebrates affects the decomposition rates of different litter types (grass, a pioneer species and a mix of litters from a well preserved secondary forest). To answer this question, we placed litter bags inside artificial exclusion plots that were built in two types of vegetation coverage (abandoned pastureland and preserved forest) in the Atlantic forest of southeast Brazil. Our hypothesis is that vertebrate exclusion will change decomposition rates of different litter types due to the top-down cascade effect on soil invertebrates. We found out that vertebrate exclusion did not affect decomposition rates, possibly due to the overlap of ecological functions in the soil fauna responsible for the decomposition process. Furthermore, grass litter was decomposed faster (k value), possibly due to its initial nutrient content and hence litter quality which plays a significant role on decomposition rates.

By analyzing 6,480 tree leaf samples from 57 sites within Brazilian biomes, we considered whether vegetation types in terrestrial ecosystems reflect biogeochemical diversity and whether they fit into a leaf economics spectrum (LES). To achieve this, we investigated the relations among leaf carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, their isotope natural abundance and C:N ratio. In addition, we tested their correlations with mean annual temperature (MAT) and precipitation (MAP), as climatic factors. We found consistent differences in the C and N concentrations and their isotopic composition among the vegetation types. MAP is the main climatic driver of changes in N, C:N ratio, δ15N, and δ13C, correlating negatively with N and positively with C:N ratio. These relations show that these biomes follow an LES. The Caatinga had the highest δ15N values, suggesting that N residence time in soil is longer due to low leaching and plant uptake. We observed that MAP is not the only factor influencing δ13C values in different biomes; instead canopy effect probably explains the highest values observed in the Cerrado. Our results reinforce earlier findings that life diversity in the tropics reflects biogeochemistry diversity and leaf δ15N opens the possibility for investigating plant trade-offs dictated by the LES. Finally, we expect our findings to contribute to a better understanding of the tropics in global climate models.

Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre (Pongamia) is a tree native to Southeast Asia. Recently, interest in Pongamia focused on its potential as a biofuel source as its seeds contain around 40% oil. However, Pongamia has multiple applications beyond biofuel production. It is a legume, can form symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi, has been shown to be tolerant to drought, salinity, and heavy metals in soil, and has potential to mitigate climate change. Additionally, Pongamia oil has medicinal properties, can be used as biopesticide, insect repellent, to produce soap, and as a source of edible grade vegetable oil. The seed cake can be used as a source of bioenergy, food and feed protein, and organic fertiliser, and the flowers are a good source of pollen and nectar. Pongamia can also bring socio-economic benefits as its ability to restore degraded and contaminated land provides opportunities for local communities through novel valorisation pathways. These multiple applications have potential to form part of a circular bioeconomy in line with sustainable development goals. Although research on the multiple applications of Pongamia has grown considerably, knowledge gaps remain and these need to be addressed so that the full potential of Pongamia can be achieved. Further understanding of the mechanisms underlying its resilience to abiotic stresses, phytoremediation potential and biotic interactions should be a priority, and co-ordinated breeding efforts will be key. Here, we critically review the available literature on Pongamia and highlight gaps in knowledge in which future research should focus on to ensure that the full potential of this versatile tree can be achieved. We conclude that Pongamia can potentially form part of a circular bioeconomy and that harnessing the multiple applications of Pongamia in a holistic manner, with collaboration among key stakeholders, is crucial for the successful application of its benefits far beyond biofuel production.

The impact of soil compaction on soybean root growth and grain yield can be alleviated by the presence of biopores and root channels in the soil profile. We hypothesize that cover crops (ruzigrass and oats) are better than grain crops (wheat and maize) to reduce the soil physical limitation to soybean root growth. We aimed to identify which precrops have higher potential to reduce the mechanical and water stresses resulting from soil compaction and soil desegregation, and to enhance soybean (Glycine max L) root growth and yield in an Oxisol (Rhodic Eutrudox), with clayey soil texture. Soybean was grown after four precrops (ruzigrass, oats, wheat, or maize), under four soil compaction levels [soil chiselling (MTC), no-tillage (NT), NT additionally compacted with four passes of a tractor (NTCT), and NT additionally compacted with eight passes of a grain harvester (NTCH)]. Soil physical attributes (bulk density, macroporosity, water-filled pore space and soil penentration resistance) in the soil profile (0−50 cm) and soybean components (grain yield, cumulative root length density and root dry mass) were investigated. Soil physical attributes were improved over time due to the combined effects of natural wetting-drying cycles and biopores created by the roots of precrops. Ruzigrass increased soybean root biomass and length density, mainly at deeper soil layers of compacted treatments (NTCT and NTCH). The rate of increase of soybean root length density in the soil profile was higher after ruzigrass cultivation in comparison with maize and oats. Soil compaction effects on grain yield were partially (NTCH) or totally (NTCT) alleviated after two years and ruzigrass intensified the mitigation process. Ruzigrass also resulted in higher soybean yields in comparison with maize, whereas NTCH and MTC reduced yields in approximately 400 kg ha−1 (∼13 %) compared to NT and NTCT. Soil strengthening was more evident after ruzigrass and oats cultivation than maize or wheat cropping. Soil compaction in clayey Oxisols can be alleviated over time as a result of root channels provided by precrops combined with natural wetting-drying cycles. Among the evaluated precrops, ruzigrass is of particular interest, as it provides the most suitable soil physical environment for soybean root growth and grain yield. In contrast, chiselling was demonstrated to be a non-viable strategy to mitigate soil physical constraints for root growth and grain yields. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Phosphorus (P) use in global food and bioenergy production needs to become more efficient and sustainable to reduce environmental impacts and conserve a finite and critical resource (Carpenter & Bennett, Environmental Research Letters, 2011, 6, 014009; Springmann et al., Nature, 2018, 562, 519). Sugarcane is one crop with a large P footprint because production is centered on P‐fixing soils with low P availability (Roy et al., Nature Plants, 2016, 2, 16043; Withers et al., Scientific Reports, 2018, 8, 2537). As global demand for processed sugar and bioethanol continues to increase, we advocate that improving P efficiency could become a key sustainability goal for the sugarcane industry. Here, we applied the 5R global P stewardship framework (Withers et al., Ambio, 2015, 44, 193) to identify more sustainable options to manage P in Brazilian sugarcane production. We show that current inputs of P fertilizer to the current crop area could be reduced by over 305 Gg, or 63%, over the next three decades by reducing unnecessary P fertilizer use, better utilization of recyclable bioresources and redesigning recommendation systems. Adoption of these 5R options would save the sugarcane industry in Brazil 528 US$ million and help safeguard global food and energy security., Improving phosphorus efficiency could become a key sustainability goal for the sugarcane industry. Crop rotation, cover crops introduction and no tillage adoption have improved tropical agriculture sustainability through improvements on soil conservation and water use efficiency. Soil fertility and topsoil phosphorus (P) accumulation is also altered by management, affecting P dynamics and its use for subsequent cash crops. Changes in soil P fractions promoted by no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) in soybean/cotton crop systems with different cover crop rotations (fallow, maize as second crop, brachiaria and millet) were investigated in two long-term trials in Brazilian Oxisols (Ox-1 and Ox-2), and compared to soils under native Cerrado vegetation. Hedley's P fractionation was performed in soil samples taken from 0 to 5, 5 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm depth layers and P fractions grouped by their predicted lability. Environmental benefits from bioenergy production derived from sugarcane crop residues (straw) can be lost by soil organic matter depletion resulting from excessive straw removal rates from fields. Soil organic carbon stock is the core for sustaining soil health, supporting nutrient cycling, and sequestering carbon dioxide. To find out that how much sugarcane straw can be removed from the field to produce bioenergy without changes in soil C concentrations, we investigated effects of straw removal rates (total, moderate, and no removal of sugarcane straw) on soil carbon and nitrogen fractions in an Oxisol and an Ultisol in southeastern Brazil for two years. Soil C and N fractions were affected by increased rates of straw removal at the second year. In the Oxisol, total straw removal decreased labile and microbial-C by ~30% and soil C stock by 20% compared to no straw removal. No removal decreased microbial-N and total N stock by ~15% and ~20%, respectively. In the Ultisol, no straw removal resulted in increases in C stock by &gt, 10% and labile and microbial-C by ~20% related to total straw removal. Total straw removal showed more microbial-N (~10%) and total-N stock (~25%) compared to no straw removal. The moderate straw removal intensity (i.e., 8 to 10 Mg ha&minus, 1 of straw) may control the straw-C release to soil by straw decomposition. This study suggests that excessive straw removal rates should be avoided, preventing SOM depletion and consequently, soil health degradation. Moderate straw removal seems to be a promising strategy, but long-term soil C monitoring is fundamental to design more sustainable straw management and bioenergy production systems.

Exploiting native soil phosphorus (P) and the large reservoirs of residual P accumulated over decades of cultivation, namely “legacy P”, has great potential to overcome the high demand of P fertilisers in Brazilian cropping systems. Long-term field experiments have shown that a large proportion (> 70%) of the surplus P added via fertilisers remains in the soil, mainly in forms not readily available to crops. An important issue is if the amount of legacy P mobilized from soil is sufficient for the crop nutritional demand and over how long this stored soil P can be effectively ‘mined’ by crops in a profitable way. Here we mapped the spatial–temporal distribution of legacy P over the past 50 years, and discussed possible agricultural practices that could increase soil legacy P usage by plants in Brazil. Mineral fertiliser and manure applications have resulted in ~ 33.4 Tg of legacy P accumulated in the agricultural soils from 1967 to 2016, with a current annual surplus rate of 1.6 Tg. Following this same rate, soil legacy P may reach up to 106.5 Tg by 2050. Agricultural management practices to enhance soil legacy P usage by crops includes increasing soil pH by liming, crop rotation, double-cropping, inter-season cover crops, no-tillage system and use of modern fertilisers, in addition to more efficient crop varieties and inoculation with P solubilising microorganisms. The adoption of these practices could increase the use efficiency of P, substantially reducing the new input of fertilisers and thus save up to 31.8 Tg of P fertiliser use (US$ 20.8 billion) in the coming decades. Therefore, exploring soil legacy P is imperative to reduce the demand for mineral fertilisers while promoting long-term P sustainability in Brazil.

Several previous studies on targeted food items using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in Brazil have revealed that many of the items investigated are adulterated, mislabeled or even fraud. Here, we present the first Brazilian isotopic baseline assessment that can be used not only in future forensic cases involving food authenticity, but also in human forensic anthropology studies. The &delta, 13C and &delta, 15N were determined in 1245 food items and 374 beverages, most of them made in Brazil. The average &delta, 15N of C3 plants were &minus, 26.7 &plusmn, 1.5&permil, and 3.9 &plusmn, 3.9&permil, respectively, while the average &delta, 15N of C4 plants were &minus, 11.5 &plusmn, 0.8&permil, and 4.6 &plusmn, 2.6&permil, respectively. The &delta, 15N of plant-based processed foods were &minus, 21.8 &plusmn, 4.8&permil, 2.7&permil, respectively. The average &delta, 15N of meat, including beef, poultry, pork and lamb were -16.6 &plusmn, 4.7&permil, and 5.2 &plusmn, respectively, while the &delta, 15N of animal-based processed foods were &minus, 17.9 &plusmn, 3.3&permil, and 3.3 &plusmn, 3.5&permil, 13C of beverages, including beer and wine was &minus, 22.5 &plusmn, 3.1&permil, We verified that C-C4 constitutes a large proportion of fresh meat, dairy products, as well as animal and plant-based processed foods. The reasons behind this high proportion will be addressed in this study.

Integrated farming systems are sustainable strategies to intensify land productivity by combining annual crop, livestock and/or forestry activities in different spatio-temporal arrangements. Therefore, they may help tackle global food and energy insecurity and climate change in the coming decades. We investigated the effects of integrated crop-livestock (ICL) and integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems on quantity, quality, and origin of soil organic matter (SOM) in southeastern Brazil. A native forest and an extensive low-grazing intensity pasture system were used as references. In integrated systems, corn (Zea mays) was alternated with two consecutive years of piata grass (Urochloa bryzantha) for cattle grazing. In ICLF, eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus urograndis) were planted in simple rows of 15 × 2 m. Soil sampling was performed three times; in 2014, after two years of grazing; in 2015, after crop cultivation; and in 2016, after a successive grazing year, to evaluate chemical and physical composition changes of organic matter (C, N, δ13C, δ15N, and organic matter fractions) with time. Our findings showed that from 2010 to 2016, all systems (extensive grazing, ICL and ICLF) promoted increments on soil C and N stocks. However, land intensification converting extensive low-grazing intensity pasture to ICL was the most promising strategy, increasing soil C stocks at the rate of 0.28 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 from 2010 to 2016. Annual crop cultivation (corn intercropped with piata grass) promoted high organic matter inputs on the soil, increasing the amount of soil labile organic matter fractions, which presented higher δ13C and lower δ15N values over time. SOM in the integrated farming systems was originated mainly from C4 plants. Therefore, optimizing development of piata grass and corn increases organic residue inputs and then, soil C and N stocks. In addition, the crop period increased soil fertility parameters, which favors plant growth, thus providing high labile C inputs to the soil. In contrast, land intensification by adding the forestry component into the system (i.e., conversion from ICL to ICLF) reduced soil C (-0.22 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) and N (-0.03 Mg N ha−1 yr−1) stocks from 2010 to 2016, likely due to the reduction of C and N inputs to the soil caused by limited growth of annual crop and grass species under tree shades. In conclusion, land use intensification through ICL system contributes towards a more efficient and low-C agriculture, whereas the studied ICLF system did not bring further benefits to increase the quantity and/or quality of SOM.

Use of cover crops in an integrated agricultural system can reduce demand of inorganic phosphorus (P) fertilizers, where the subsequent crops can take up P accumulated in cover crops biomass after the decomposition. In this research we hypothesized that some cover crops can take up P from less labile fractions and recycle it back to the soil through plant residues resulting in better P use efficiency of the system; cover crops are capable of P uptake from subsurface layers which leads to the accumulation of this P on the surface after the decomposition of their residues; and cover crop species respond differently to distinct inorganic P sources. To examine these hypotheses, a field experiment was conducted over nine successive years in South Brazil. The experimental treatments were established as a split-plot randomized block design, in a 3 × 6 factorial scheme, considering three P treatments [no-P, single superphosphate (SSP), and rock phosphate (RP)] as main plot and six cover crop treatments (common vetch, white lupin, fodder radish, ryegrass, black oat, and a fallow) as subplots. Soil samples were collected from the depths of 0–5, 5–10, and 10–15 cm and analyzed by Hedley P fractionation. In P-unfertilized cropping system, the amounts of labile and mod-labile P fractions were not modified by cover crops related to fallow. When inorganic P fertilizers were applied, the amount of labile and mod-labile P pools under fallow were higher than under cover crops in 5–10 cm depth. Black oat and common vetch cycled more labile P under SSP and RP, respectively. Common vetch and ryegrass resulted in the highest accumulation of organic P on the surface under SSP and RP, respectively. Black oat was capable to change P extracted by 1.0 M HCl to more labile forms. Fodder radish showed the highest P uptake in comparison with other cover crops. The higher P balance efficiency of the system was achieved under SSP in comparison with RP application but it seems that cover crops are more effective at improving the efficiency under RP compared to SSP.

A glasshouse experiment was conducted to elucidate the influence of elemental sulfur (S) application rates (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g S kg−1 soil) on the release and uptake of S at 0, 20, and 40 days after incubation. Results showed that there was a progressive upward trend in maize leaves, stem, and root S content with application of elemental S. However, maize production followed a nonlinear model. Plants grown in untreated soils suffer from S deficiency and addition of elemental S at a rate of 0.5 g S kg−1 soil alleviated S deficiency. The decrease in maize performance due to the highest S application rate was not related to S toxicity. The greatest leave, stem, and root productions were obtained at S concentrations of 0.41, 0.58, and 0.2%, respectively. Overall, application of elemental S at a rate of 0.5 g S kg−1 soil is recommended for maize performance improvement.

Integrated farming systems are promising strategies towards land-use efficiency and sustainable agriculture. The integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) system stablish complex interactions were synergies or competition depend on the arrangements throughout time and space. Fine root (≤2 mm) growth dynamics of crops, pasture and trees remains unclear when these species are integrated. We aimed to assess root growth dynamics after Eucalyptus urograndis introduction into an integrated crop-livestock (ICL) system. Previous ICL area was used as a reference. We assessed ICLF 1.9, 4.3 and 7.5 m distances from tree rows, starting the study when trees had three years of age. Eucalyptus rows were spaced 15 m apart and integrated to annual crops and pasture. We evaluated the root growth under two different successional periods: (i) corn cultivation interspaced with palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha); and (ii) a pasture, when palisade grass was grazed. We tracked fine root length using the minirhizotron technique, capturing 3200 images scanning up to 70 cm soil depth. Data of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) transmission, soil bulk density, rainfall and air temperature were used as complementary information to support the discussion. Our results showed that Eucalyptus trees impaired root growth of annual crops cultivated in the interrow position, regardless of distance from the row. From 31 to 80 days after corn germination, root length production in ICLF was reduced by 120–179 cm m−2.d−1 along the tree interrow space. For the pasture period, total produced root length density reduced 6% at 1.9 m but increased 25% at 4.3 and 7.5 m, when compared to ICL. Shade of Eucalyptus trees at ICLF 1.9 m position, with PAR transmission mainly below 60%, sharply impaired root growth. Eucalyptus roots represented 12% from total root length produced in ICLF system, and 38% of these roots had positive ectomycorrhizal status. In conclusion, under Eucalyptus trees higher than 20 m, pasture of palisade grass is more adaptable than corn when considering the root growth dynamics of our studied ICLF arrangement. Based on our findings, corn intercropped with palisade grass should not be introduced in future management of the ICLF system, unless part of the trees is chopped to reduce light competition. However, implemented pasture of palisade grass showed belowground synergies with Eucalyptus, increasing root growth in intermediary interrow positions and emerging new fungal symbiosis, which could be playing important functions in soil, as soil carbon storage and nutrient cycling.

A new strategic analysis of current and future P demand/supply concluded that the nation's secondary P resources which are produced annually (e.g. livestock manures, sugarcane processing residues) could potentially provide up to 20% of crop P demand by 2050 with further investment in P recovery technologies. However, the much larger legacy stores of secondary P in the soil (30 Tg in 2016 worth over $40 billion and rising to 105 Tg by 2050) could provide a more important buffer against future P scarcity or sudden P price fluctuations, and enable a transition to more sustainable P input strategies that could reduce current annual P surpluses by 65%. In the longer-term, farming systems in Brazil should be redesigned to operate profitably but more sustainably under lower soil P fertility thresholds. Plants have developed different mechanisms to absorb and solubilize phosphorus (P) in the soil, especially in environments with low P availability. This study evaluated the effects of different winter cover crops on soil P availability in a clayey subtropical (Hapludox) soil receiving soluble P fertilizer and a rock phosphate applied to the summer crop, under no‐tillage. The experiment was carried out over 3 yrs (2009–2011) with five different cover crop species: common vetch, fodder radish, ryegrass, black oat, white clover and fallow as control. The soil was sampled after the third year of cover crop cultivation and analysed for inorganic and organic P forms according to the well‐established Hedley fractionation procedure. Phosphate fertilizers promoted accumulation of both labile and nonlabile P pools in soil in the near surface layer, especially under rock phosphate. Fertilizer applications were not able to change P fractions in deeper layers, emphasizing that the Brazilian clayey soils are a sink of P from fertilizer and its mobility is almost nil. Although the cover crops recycled a great amount of P in tissue, in a short‐term evaluation (3 yrs) they only changed the content of moderately labile P in soil, indicating that long‐term studies are needed for more conclusive results.

Understanding the pathways of soil phosphorus (P) transformations and determining the factors related to P nutritional status of soils when land use changes is critical for a better management, especially in Amazon region. We investigated different P fractions and their transformations in different land uses (primary forest and pasture) and soil textures (clayey and sandy) in Amazonian Oxisols using path analysis. Besides P fractionation, phosphatase activity and its correlation with soil carbon (C):organic P (Po) ratio was evaluated to correlate it with soil P nutritional status. After 15 years from forest slashing and burning, total P in pasture reaches to the forest levels in Amazonian soils, regardless of soil texture. Path analysis showed that land use conversion from forest to pasture decreased the diversity of the contribution of P pools to buffer P extracted by anion exchange resin. However, Po accounted for one-fourth of total P in our sites, it plays an important role as source of plant available P and contributed more in pasture compared to forest. Our results from P fractionation and C:Po ratio revealed that Amazonian pastures and forests are not P deficient. We also showed that with increasing C:Po ratio, plant-available P content became more dependent on P mineralization. Soil acid phosphatase activity can be used as an indicator for evaluating soil P nutritional status; however, its range changes according to the land use.

Brazil is the world's largest sugarcane producer. This crop leaves huge amounts of straw behind which have to be managed with innovative approaches. In this study, a field experiment was carried out over six successive years of sugarcane harvests to evaluate the effect of straw maintenance on the field on changes in soil phosphorus (P) fractions. Four straw maintenance rates were tested: (i) maintaining 15 Mg ha−1 (SM15); (ii) maintaining 10 Mg ha−1 (SM10); (iii) maintaining 5 Mg ha−1 (SM5), and (iv) maintaining 0 Mg ha−1 (SM0). Our results showed that low maintenance of straw (SM5) resulted in the highest amount of P extracted by anion exchange resin and inorganic P extracted by 0.5 mol L−1 NaHCO3 in 0−5 and 5−10 cm soil depths. While total removal of residues resulted in soil P deficiency after six crop cycles, keeping straw on the soil surface at the rate of 5 Mg ha−1 supports plant growth without the need for P fertilizer application. We detected inorganic P extracted by 0.1 mol L−1 NaOH as the sink of P derived from straw since it was the only P fraction which increased with increasing straw on the soil surface. Non-labile P fractions were not influenced by straw maintenance rates in all depths. This is a promising result since it shows that P derived from straw does not accumulate in non-labile P fractions which are not plant available. Inorganic P was not influenced by straw removal rates and total P was only changed in 0−5 cm soil layer, while organic P was affected in all depths. We observed that organic P is available to sugarcane plants under SM0, SM5, and SM10, while under SM15, organic P does not play a role in sugarcane nutrition.

Intermittently submergence and drainage status of paddy fields can cause alterations in morphological and chemical characteristics of soils. We conducted a sequential fractionation study to provide an insight into solubility of Sulfur (S) and Molybdenum (Mo) in flooded alluvial paddy soils. The samples (0–15 and 15–30 cm) were taken from marine and riverine alluvial soils in Kedah and Kelantan areas, respectively, and were sequentially extracted with NaHCO3, NaOH, HCl, and HClO4–HNO3. Total S in upper and lower layers of Kedah and Kelantan ranged between 273 and 1121 mg kg−1, and 177 to 1509 mg kg−1, respectively. In upper layers and subsoil of Kedah, average total Mo were 0.34 and 0.27 mg kg−1, respectively. Average total Mo in Kelantan were 0.25 mg kg−1 (surface layer) and 0.28 mg kg−1 (subsoil). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) was positively correlated with plant available amounts of Mo in upper layers of Kedah area. Also, total and medium-term plant-available S was correlated with total carbon (C) at lower layers of Kelantan soil series. But in surface layers of Kelantan soil series, CEC was strongly correlated with total and medium-term plant-available S. Our results indicates that the influence of flooding conditions on soil S and Mo contents in paddy fields may cause long-term changes in S and Mo chemical reactivities.

Background Brazil has the largest commercial herd of ruminants with approximately 211 million head, representing 15% of world’s beef production, in an area of 170 million hectares of grasslands, mostly cultivated with Brachiaria spp. Although nutrient reduction due to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has already been verified in important crops, studies evaluating its effects on fiber fractions and elemental composition of this grass genus are still scarce. Therefore, a better understanding of the effects of elevated CO2 on forage quality can elucidate the interaction between forage and livestock production and possible adaptations for a climate change scenario. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of contrasting atmospheric CO2 concentrations on biomass production, morphological characteristics, fiber fractions, and elemental composition of Brachiaria decumbens (cv. Basilisk). Methods A total of 12 octagonal rings with 10 m diameter were distributed in a seven-ha coffee plantation and inside each of them, two plots of 0.25 m2 were seeded with B. decumbens (cv. Basilisk) in a free air carbon dioxide enrichment facility. Six rings were kept under natural conditions (≈390 μmol mol−1 CO2; Control) and other six under pure CO2 flux to achieve a higher concentration (≈550 μmol mol−1 CO2; Elevated CO2). After 30 months under contrasting atmospheric CO2 concentration, grass samples were collected, and then splitted into two portions: in the first, whole forage was kept intact and in the second portion, the leaf, true stem, inflorescence and senescence fractions were manually separated to determine their proportions (%). All samples were then analyzed to determine the fiber fractions (NDF, hemicellulose, ADF, cellulose, and Lignin), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) contents and N isotopic composition. Results Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration did not influence biomass productivity, average height, leaf, stem, senescence and inflorescence proportions, and fiber fractions (p > 0.05). Calcium content of the leaf and senescence portion of B. decumbens were reduced under elevated atmospheric CO2 (p < 0.05). Despite no effect on total C and N (p > 0.05), lower C:N ratio was observed in the whole forage grown under elevated CO2 (p < 0.05). The isotopic composition was also affected by elevated CO2, with higher values of δ15N in the leaf and stem portions of B. decumbens (p < 0.05). Discussion Productivity and fiber fractions of B. decumbens were not influenced by CO2 enrichment. However, elevated CO2 resulted in decreased forage Ca content which could affect livestock production under a climate change scenario.

Malaysian soils are highly weathered, acidic, and not very fertile for crop production. About 75" of these soils fall under the Ultisols and Oxisols soil group, which are normally found in tropical regions. Ultisols are usually acid soils, which have been formed under forest vegetation and are not natively fertile. Different types of soils are found in whole Malaysia. Organic soil in Malaysia is divided into nine main classes based on the problems concerned with the soil and management steps. Most of these soils are poorly drained, have low fertility, and require high cost of construction. Ultisols and Oxisols in Malaysia contain 1"–2" organic matter, which is not sufficient for plant growth. Most of these soils are cultivated under oil palm, rubber, and cocoa. Oil palm is the most important agricultural crop in Malaysia. The main sources of phosphorus in oil palm plantation are phosphate rocks (PRs), triple superphosphate (TSP), and diammonium phosphate (DAP).

This research evaluated the potential benefits of winter cover crops on the utilization and cycling of P in Brazilian tropical cropping systems. The effect of P fertilizer [none, rock phosphate (RP), and soluble phosphate (single superphosphate, SSP)] in combination with cover crop residues (common vetch [Vicia sativa L.], white lupin [Lupinus albus L.], forage radish [Raphanus sativus L.], ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum Lam], black oat [Avena strigosa Schreb.], red clover [Trifolium pratense L.], and fallow) were evaluated on maize (Zea mays L.) yield and P use efficiency over three maize cropping seasons under no‐tillage, from 2009 to 2012. Cover crop yields and P uptake were higher under phosphate fertilizers than nil‐P across all seasons evaluated. The highest amounts of P recycled in cover crops over the period were under white lupin, followed by radish and ryegrass, but without any significant cover crop effect on maize yield. The largest response and greatest P use efficiency (30 kg grain per kg P applied) was obtained in the third year of evaluation, when maize yield was restricted by low rainfall. In this year, RP promoted greater maize yield than SSP and the nil‐P. Soil available P at the end of the experiment was higher under RP than SSP. It is concluded that RP solubility is higher than currently predicted (9% P2O5 in citric acid). Cover crops were not able to affect maize yield after 3 yr of leaving the residues on the surface, however they can reduce the soil loss by erosion and runoff.

A hydroponic trial was carried out to determine the effect of molybdenum (Mo) on utilization and uptake of macro and micronutrients in different rice cultivars. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete-block design, with a split-plot arrangement of treatments and three replications. Four rates of Mo (0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg L-1) and five cultivars (MR219, HASHEMI, MR232, FAJRE and MR253) provided the main and sub-plots, respectively. The results showed that the enhancement of Mo levels (from 0.01 to 0.1 and 0.1 to 1mg L-1) led to increase of root Mo uptake by 81.7 and 61.6% and shoot Mo uptake by 43 and 87%, respectively. Also, Mo application significantly affected shoot Phosphorus uptake so that highest shoot Phosphorus (P) uptake (0.43% plant-1) was achieved at 1mg Mo L-1 but there was no significant influence on root P uptake. Shoot Iron (Fe) uptake was inversely proportional to increment of Mo rates therefore, the highest rate of shoot Fe (59.05 μg plant-1) was obtained in treatments with least amount of applied Mo. Also, increase in Mo application enhanced manganese (Mn) uptake of shoot but there was no significant effect on Mn root uptake.

Zinc (Zn) and Phosphorus (P) interact with each other and this interaction can result in impact on the yield of corn plants. This study was conducted to examine the effect of different levels of Zn and P on the yield, Zn and P concentration and uptake, chlorophyll content and percentage of P derived from fertilizer of corn plants in a tropical soil. Sweet corn grown in pot culture containing all combinations of Zn at levels of 0.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mg kg−1 soil and P at levels of 0.0, 50.0, 100.0 and 200.0 mg kg−1 soil as ZnSO4.7H2O and KH2PO4, respectively and harvested at 28 days after transplanting. Dry matter yield increased with P supply, while Zn application did not show any significant effect on this parameter. The Zn and P uptake by shoots increased with increasing Zn and P application into the soil. The Zn concentration in shoots decreased with increasing P supply but P concentration and uptake enhanced. Phosphorus (P) induced Zn deficiency in this study mostly related to the dilution effect. Chlorophyll a/b ratio increased with P supply. The percentage of P derived from fertilizer reduced with increasing Zn application, although P uptake by shoots was unchanged.

Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) interact with each other and this interaction can affect the yield of corn plants. This study was conducted to examine the effect of different levels of P and Zn on the ultrastructure of chloroplast and physiological characteristics of corn plants. Sweet corn was grown in nutrient culture containing all combinations of P at levels of 0.0 and 80.0 mg L-1 as KH2PO4 and Zn at levels of 0.0 and 20.0 mg L-1 as ZnSO4.7H2O and harvested at 14 and 28 days after transplanting. Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in leaves increased with increasing P and Zn concentration in nutrient solution. Zinc supply did not affect P concentration but Zn concentration reduced with increasing P supply in nutrient solution at both harvests. The lowest amount of chlorophyll content was recorded in Zn20P0 treatment due to the interaction of Zn with iron in the growth medium. Carbonic anhydrase activity in leaves was enhanced with increasing Zn levels and decreased with increasing P levels at both harvest times. Carbonic anhydrase activity is a better indicator of Zn nutritional status than Zn concentration alone. The ultrastructure of chloroplast was affected with P and Zn supply.

Background Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are highly promising biofertilizers that contribute to eco-friendly sustainable agriculture. There have been many reports on the anti-microbial properties of nanoparticles (NPs). Toxic effects of NPs under laboratory conditions have also reported; however, there is a lack of information about their uptake and mobility in organisms under environmental conditions. There is an urgent need to determine the highest concentration of NPs which is not detrimental for growth and proliferation of PGPR. Methods Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to measure the size and shape of NPs. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of nano-silver on selected beneficial microbes and Ralstonia solanacearum were measured using the microdilution broth method. The percentage of seed germination was measured under in vitro conditions. Results NPs were spherical with a size of 16 ± 6 nm. Nano-silver at 12–40 mg l−1 inhibited the growth of bacteria. Seed application at 40 mg l−1 protected seeds from R. solanacearum and improved the rate of seed germination.

Malaysia has 2.4 million ha of peat and this type of soil is very poor in phosphorus and needs P application. As there are various sources of P fertilizer in the Malaysian market, it is crucial for growers to apply the most effective source for their crops. In this research, two sources of phosphate rocks available in the local fertilizer market from Christmas Island (CIPR) and Morocco (MPR) at four rates were evaluated for maximum yields of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) from oil palm grown on peat soils in Sarawak, Malaysia. The CIPR and MPR at the rates of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 g plam-1 year-1 were applied annually. FFB ha-1, average weight bunch-1 and leaf and soil nutrient concentrations were determined. Results showed that MPR treatments produced higher available soil P than CIPR treatments by average of 87% and also higher leaf P concentrations (up to 0.185%). Pearson’s correlation indicated that available soil P was negatively correlated with K, Mg, B, Cu and Zn but positively correlated with Ca. In addition, P concentrations in leaves were positively correlated with Ca, Mg, B and Zn but were negatively correlated with K and Cu. Correlation of yield parameters and leaf nutrient concentrations revealed that bunch weights were negatively correlated with leaf P concentrations, Mg and B, whilst the total yield was negatively correlated with Mg and B. Maximum yields were obtained at CIPR-2000 and CIPR-1000 treatments. By interpolation maximum yields in MPR would be attained at MPR-750 treatment.

Zinc and Phosphorus have antagonistic effect on the absorption and translocation of each other in plants. P-induced Zn deficiency is more common than Zn-induced P deficiency because growers commonly apply large amounts of P fertilizer as compared to Zn fertilizer. This research was conducted to examine the effect of different levels of Zn and P on the yield, Zn and P uptake and chlorophyll contents of corn plants. Sweet corn was grown in nutrient culture containing all combinations of Zn as ZnSO4.7H2O at levels of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 mg L-1 and of P as KH2PO4 at levels of 0.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg L-1. Zn0P20 treatment produced the highest yield and the yields were decreased with P application in combination with Zn. The lowest dry weight of young corn plants was recorded under Zn0P80 treatment at both harvesting times due to both Zn deficiency and P toxicity. Chlorophyll content decreased with high Zn and P applications and this can be attributed to the interactions of Zn and P with iron in the growth medium. Zn0P80 treatment had the lowest Zn and the highest P uptake by shoot at 14 days after transplanting. The study has shown that Zn deficiency can enhance P uptake and translocation to such an extent that P may accumulate to toxic level in leaves. Zn20P80 treatment produced the highest Zn and P uptake by roots. Zn and P uptake by roots increased with increased Zn and P supply.
