1. Innovations in dependence modelling for financial applications

Abstract

The contribution of this thesis is in developing and investigating novel dependence modelling techniques in financial applications. Furthermore, the aim is to understand the key factors driving the dynamic nature of such dependence. When modelling the multivariate distribution of the returns associated to a portfolio of financial assets one is faced with a multitude of considerations and potential choices. For example, in the currency studies undertaken in this thesis suitably heavy-tailed marginal time series models are developed for the returns of each currency exchange rate, and then the multivariate dependence structure of the returns of multiple-currency baskets at each time instant is considered. These dependence relationships can be studied via numerous concordance measures such as correlation, rank correlations and extremal dependences. Such studies can be undertaken in a static or dynamic setting and either parametrically or non-parametrically. Another important aspect of financial time series is the enormous amount of financial data available for statistical analysis and financial econometrics that can be used to better understand economic and financial theories. In this thesis, the focus is on the influence of dependence structures in complex financial data in two asset classes: currencies and commodities. These are challenging data structures as they contain temporal serial dependence, cross dependence and term-structural dependences. Each of these forms of dependence are studied in this thesis in both parametric and non-parametric settings.

2. Association of Dilated Cardiomyopathy with the Striatin Mutation Genotype in Boxer Dogs.

Abstract

Myocardial disease in the Boxer dog is characterized by 1 of 2 clinical presentations, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) characterized by ventricular systolic dysfunction, dilatation and tachyarrhythmias, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) characterized by ventricular tachyarrhythmias, syncope, and sudden death. Boxer ARVC has been associated with a deletion in the striatin gene in some families.We hypothesized that both presentations represent a single disease, and the development of DCM in the Boxer is associated with the striatin deletion.Thirty-three adult Boxer dogs with DCM, 29 adult Boxer dogs with the striatin deletion and ARVC, and 16 Boxers without cardiac disease.DNA samples were evaluated for the striatin deletion. Association of the deletion with the DCM phenotype was tested by a Fisher's exact test. T-tests were used to evaluate potential differences between the positive heterozygous and positive homozygous groups with DCM with regard to age, LVIDD, LVIDS, and FS%.Thirty of 33 dogs with DCM were positive for the striatin deletion. 4. Criminal Consequences of Childhood Sexual Victimization.

Abstract

Using a prospective cohorts design, this study assessed the long-term criminal consequences of childhood abuse/neglect in 908 cases. Early childhood sexual abuse did not uniquely increase risk for later delinquent and criminal behavior, compared to other types of abuse/neglect. Child abuse victims were at higher risk of adult arrest for sex crimes than controls. (Author/JDD)

Abstract

Flexibility is widely recognized, in research literature and in more popular publications, as being of crucial importance in manufacturing. However, there is evidence of confusion among the numerous definitions of flexibility and it is arguable that, even now, the concept is not well understood. Furthermore, there is no simple approach for the systematic incorporation of flexibility level by level within the hierarchy of a conventional manufacturing system. Introduces a unifying and simple set of concepts for flexibility from a management perspective. The purpose of this “capability and capacity” approach is to interpret and integrate various types of flexibility throughout the manufacturing system. Use of this approach leads to four important principles for the integration of a system’s overall flexibility. Analyses flexibility types within manufacturing using the proposed approach.

Abstract

The International Tamoxifen Pharmacogenomics Consortium was established to address the controversy regarding cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) status and clinical outcomes in tamoxifen therapy. We performed a meta-analysis on data from 4,973 tamoxifen-treated patients (12 globally distributed sites). Using strict eligibility requirements (postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, receiving 20 mg/day tamoxifen for 5 years, criterion 1), CYP2D6 poor metabolizer status was associated with poorer invasive disease-free survival (IDFS: hazard ratio = 1.25; 95% confidence interval = 1.06, 1.47; P = 0.009). However, CYP2D6 status was not statistically significant when tamoxifen duration, menopausal status, and annual follow-up were not specified (criterion 2, n = 2,443; P = 0.25) or when no exclusions were applied (criterion 3, n = 4,935; P = 0.38). Abstract

Myocardial disease in the Boxer dog is characterized by 1 of 2 clinical presentations, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) characterized by ventricular systolic dysfunction, dilatation and tachyarrhythmias, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) characterized by ventricular tachyarrhythmias, syncope, and sudden death. Boxer ARVC has been associated with a deletion in the striatin gene in some families.We hypothesized that both presentations represent a single disease, and the development of DCM in the Boxer is associated with the striatin deletion.Thirty-three adult Boxer dogs with DCM, 29 adult Boxer dogs with the striatin deletion and ARVC, and 16 Boxers without cardiac disease.DNA samples were evaluated for the striatin deletion. Association of the deletion with the DCM phenotype was tested by a Fisher's exact test. T-tests were used to evaluate potential differences between the positive heterozygous and positive homozygous groups with DCM with regard to age, LVIDD, LVIDS, and FS%.Thirty of 33 dogs with DCM were positive for the striatin deletion. The striatin mutation and the homozygous genotype were strongly associated with the DCM phenotype (P < .001 and P = .005). There was no statistical difference between the heterozygous and homozygous groups with regard to age and echocardiographic measurements.This study demonstrates an association between DCM in the Boxer dog and the striatin mutation, particularly with the homozygous genotype. The observation that 3/33 dogs developed DCM and lacked the striatin mutation suggests that there is at least 1 other cause of DCM in the Boxer dog.

Abstract

We report magnetization and magnetic neutron scattering measurements on nanocrystalline Fe which was prepared by means of the inert-gas condensation technique. Depending on the compaction pressure applied during the synthesis procedure (0.5–1.8 GPa), the resulting Fe samples contain porosity with volume fractions between about 20–35%. We provide evidence that the spin disorder which is associated with porosity has a strong influence on magnetic properties, and it gives rise to a characteristic clover-leaf–shaped angular anisotropy in the elastic-magnetic-scattering cross-section.

Abstract

We report on the observation of real-time-resolved room temperature grain growth in nanocrystalline metals. We find that neither the time evolution of size can be modeled by standard growth theories nor are there any other systems aware to us that manifest a similar growth behaviour. We detect a transition from an initially self-similar slow growth to abnormal grain growth. Its onset seems to be associated with the simultaneous decrease of microstrain with increasing grain size. Abnormal grain growth is considered as a generic feature of nanocrystallinity but is a transient state since we observed in the late stage of coarsening, using orientational imaging microscopy, a monomodal grain size distribution. We empirically find a nonlinear-response-type of growth law which is in agreement with the observed coarsening kinetics.
