- Abstract
The underrepresentation of women and racial and ethnic minorities in computer science (CS) and other fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is a serious impediment to technological innovation as well as an affront to fundamental notions of fairness and equity. These gaps emerge in the early grades and tend to persist, if not widen, throughout the secondary and postsecondary years. The unconscious biases (UB) of teachers, school administrators, and fellow students may contribute meaningfully to the persistence of these gaps. Fortunately, a nascent literature on targeted interventions that directly address UB suggests there may be compelling opportunities to promote broader engagement in CS and STEM education and employment. The fields of neuroscience, social psychology, economics, and sociology articulate the many possible origins of UB and the ways in which UB can harm stereotyped groups, particularly in educational settings. This interdisciplinary literature yields two troubling, important insights: (1) Humans consciously "and unconsciously" store experiences in our brains and those experiences (memories) later influence instantaneous, automatic decision-making, which is critical to cognitive functioning and "cannot be turned off"; and (2) Exposure to UB can trigger self-fulfilling prophecies by changing stereotyped groups' behaviors to conform to stereotypes, "even when the stereotype was initially untrue". These insights provide specific guidance for mitigating the negative consequences of UB via interventions that disrupt the channels through which UB influences individuals and that highlight the insidiousness of UB, respectively. In particular, the following design insights should be considered when addressing UB systematically: (1) Asking individuals to "suppress biases" is likely to be "counterproductive", as this requires a great deal of mental effort and can cause UB to eventually rebound above pre-intervention levels; and (2) Teachers and classroom climate moderate the impact of UB, suggesting that teacher-facing interventions that carefully leverage the relevant psychological mechanisms (e.g., awareness, motivation, individuation, and empathy) have substantial promise to reduce teachers' UB and improve student outcomes. In sum, UB is a nontrivial problem in education, especially in CS and STEM education, and it is not easily addressed via traditional educational policies and interventions. However, interventions that identify and alter the frequently unconscious psychological processes that harm individuals' outcomes are currently being developed and piloted. Teacher-facing interventions, which can be administered to both pre- and in-service teachers, are particularly promising. In part, this is because by addressing UB among teachers, we can help shape the entire classroom context in supportive ways. Furthermore, teacher-facing interventions are potentially cost-effective and scalable, because infrastructure for teacher training is already in place. Still, much remains to be learned about the scalability, external validity, and optimal design of such interventions. Given the scope and complexity of the problem, interdisciplinary and inter-sector partnerships between public schools, universities, researchers, and industry will likely play a pivotal role in meeting these objectives.

This research aims to investigate the circumstances and possible reasons for a very high and rather unexpected success rate of IT projects implemented in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. For that purpose, the existing literature was reviewed thoroughly, and an appropriate research design was formulated. In order to answer the research questions posed, a questionnaire was developed and sent to 400 companies in the F BiH that meet the defined business profile, yielding 62 valid responses. For the purpose of data analysis, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed. The obtained results show that keeping the project size small significantly increases the odds for achieving IT project success, regardless of the organizational maturity level in project management. In addition, the higher the organizational maturity level in project management the higher IT projects success ratio. Results also revealed that the differences between IT projects’ success ratio of different groups of organizations are primarily induced by the time and costs project constraints, but not with project scope.

- Abstract
As artificial intelligence technologies are emerging and changing various fields including journalism, it is important to understand the extent of AI knowledge that newsrooms have. This study explores the perceptions of experts regarding artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge in Egyptian newsrooms. This paper employs the AI readiness and AI adoption model which includes the phases of AI adoption, and five variables that affect the adoption process. Through in-depth interviews, the research focuses on the AI knowledge variable which includes several aspects: AI awareness, upskilling efforts, and ethical concerns among journalists and managers in organizations integrating AI. The study reveals a lack of comprehensive understanding of AI within news organizations. Upskilling initiatives vary among organizations. Experts call for regulations and ethical guidelines to face ethical concerns including accuracy, copyrights, bias, and privacy invasion. The study emphasizes the urgency of addressing AI literacy and training while managing the ethical implications of AI in journalism. - Abstract
This practicum delves into the socio-economic and psychological landscape of Dubai, a rapidly expanding multicultural hub accommodating over 200 nationalities with its top-tier amenities and diverse lifestyles. It delves into the struggle of cultural identity experienced by both expatriates and locals amidst the cultural blend underlying its pseudo-cosmopolitanism. Despite the coexistence of myriad cultures in Dubai, genuine inter-cultural socialization and a sense of belonging are not assured. This project specifically targets the psychological and social hurdles confronted by Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCKs), individuals who have spent their formative years navigating Dubai’s evolving cultural milieu. It aims to comprehend their identity struggles and sense of belonging through a qualitative exploration of pertinent literature, translating insights into an interior spatial design concept tailored for the ATCK diaspora’s habitation. The project honors and acknowledges the unique experiences of dwelling in Dubai, from navigating through a melange of foreign languages and Arabic dialects to appreciating the juxtaposition of sandy streets, palm trees, and remnants of dates scattered on pavements against a backdrop of traditional low-rise houses and modern towers. It aims to tackle the loss of identity and disorientation among the ATCK population, exacerbated by the UAE’s stringent economic policies that create an environment where expatriates feel insecure due to the unattainable citizenship. Specifically targeting ATCKs aged between 25 and 35, who find themselves disconnected from both their home culture and unable to fully integrate into Dubai’s local culture, this practicum proposes the creation of Ma’an—a contemporary yet culturally relevant cosmopolitan center situated in the historic Al Fahidi district, re-purposing the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House Museum. This location, often overlooked yet culturally resonant for ATCKs, offers the potential for inclusive comm

- Abstract
In the fourth industrial revolution era of today, individuals encounter an immense volume of information daily. The digital world is rich in data like IoT, social media, healthcare, business, cryptocurrencies, cybersecurity, etc. The situation can become problematic as these vast amounts of data require significant storage capacity, which leads to challenges in executing tasks such as analytical operations, processing operations, and retrieval operations that are time-consuming and arduous. To effectively analyze and utilize this data, artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, and deep learning, can provide a practical solution. Clustering, an unsupervised learning technique, aims to identify a specific number of clusters to effectively categorize the data through data grouping. Hence, clustering is related to many fields and is used in various applications that deal with large datasets. This survey examines seven widely recognized clustering techniques, namely k-means, G-means, DBSCAN, Agglomerative hierarchical clustering, Two-stage density (DBSCAN and k-means) algorithm, Two-levels (DBSCAN and hierarchical) clustering algorithm, and Two-stage MeanShift and k-means clustering algorithm and compares them with a real dataset - The Blockchain dataset, including prominent cryptocurrencies like Binance, Bitcoin, Doge, and Ethereum, under several metrics such as silhouette coefficient, Calinski-Harabasz, Davies-Bouldin Index, time complexity, and entropy. - Abstract
Gas flaring is a common practice in the oil and gas industry that involves the burning of natural gas during the extraction and processing of crude oil. Despite its economic benefits, gas flaring has significant negative impacts on the environment. This paper explores the various ways in which gas flaring affects the environment, including the emission of greenhouse gases, air pollution, acid rain, and the destruction of ecosystems. It used a cross-sectional survey research design in generating the primary data used for the study, while the location of the study is Kurdistan. It used a sample size of 375 from a population of 6000 Oil & Gas company workers in Kurdistan. The findings of the study suggest that the negative impacts of gas flaring on the environment are significant, and requires urgent action to mitigate its effects. This paper provides valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders and researchers interested in addressing the environmental consequences of gas flaring in the oil and gas industry.

- Abstract
Automatic indexing and text retrieval methods for languages have been studied for a long time. Automatic indexing is a process of extracting words from a document to classify the documents per subject and to enhance the information retrieval process. Compared to other languages, there is still limited research conducted for automated Arabic text categorization. In this work, we present an innovative method to reinforce the accuracy of automatic indexing of Arabic texts by introducing and integrating a thesaurus. Our model extracts new relevant words by referring to the created thesaurus, which contains and identifies words, synonyms, and correlations. This thesaurus is built using a natural language toolkit, which contains a library that lists the synonyms of a particular word available in the WordNet library. The words that have the same meaning and frequently appear together are grouped under one umbrella using a JavaScript Object Notation dictionary, making it leisurely to identify the topic of the text. Our results exhibit notable improvement in accuracy and efficiency compared to previous works.

- Abstract
To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12,649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara. Many first country records are also included, namely: Amathia verticillata (Montenegro), Ampithoe valida (Italy), Antithamnion amphigeneum (Greece), Clavelina oblonga (Tunisia and Slovenia), Dendostrea cf. folium (Syria), Epinephelus fasciatus (Tunisia), Ganonema farinosum (Montenegro), Macrorhynchia philippina (Tunisia), Marenzelleria neglecta (Romania), Paratapes textilis (Tunisia), and Botrylloides diegensis (Tunisia).

- Abstract
eHealth is the use of information and communication technologies for health. eHealth serves multiple utilization purposes for storage, exchange, and retrieval of digital data for administrative, clinical, educational and research purposes. The ultimate purpose of the eHealth use globally is to promote health for individuals efficiently and effectively [1].A growing body of evidence reveals potential benefits of eHealth on delivery of health care that are cost-effective and responsive to patient’s needs without compromising the quality of service [2]. Systematic reviews revealed promising results on improvement of patient outcomes with implementation of eHealth services [3] especially with challenging behavioral lifestyle modifications such as improving medication adherence [4] physical activity [5] and HIV prevention [6] as well as addressing mental health [7].With the continuous evolution of eHealth services, challenges to its application and utilization are on rise. Systematic review identified multiple challenges. First, stakeholders and systems users need to have enough training to use the eHealth technology effectively and optimally. Second, the robustness of the technology and its interoperability such as integrity of data and security concerns [8]. Third, capital and startup costs and maintenance can be too costly. Fourth, legal clarity and legal framework challenge relates to legal issues such as privacy [9]. Fifth, organizational context pertains to the environment where eHealth technology is utilized [10]. A critical focus on the emerging technologies currently provides the next context for the integration of eHealth data in every aspect of human activity. The Internet of Things will cause an unpredicted explosion in the delivery of directed custom-made eHealth services to human beings; and thus, the new generation of eHealth data movement will exploit this feature to its full potential. In a way the matching of eHealth services to human needs will incorpo

- Abstract
Although the systematic eviction of Palestinians from their homeland has been recorded at length since the establishment of the state of Israel in 948, the documentation has namely concerned itself with urban centers or villages. Expulsion and removal of marginalized communities, namely the Bedouins’, from their ancestral encampments or homes have been given scant coverage by main stream media or even academia. A nomadic life is often stigmatized by the notion of transience, and thus barely considered as valuable as other lives. Furthermore, the ownership and rights to the lands that nomadic people occupy are rarely recognized. In her latest novel, Minor Detail, Palestinian writer Adania Shibli traces the story of a Bedouin girl in 1949 and her brutal slaying at the hands of Zionist gangs through the narrative of a young West Bank woman from Ramallah, who becomes obsessed with uncovering the burial site of the slain girl. The nameless narrator in the book embarks on a journey in an attempt to unravel the circumstances behind the death of the nameless Bedouin girl; her expedition results in unearthing minor details relating to the ethnic cleansing of the girl’s tribe along with their silenced history. The novel evolves into a story of parallel lives, albeit 25 years apart. The Ramallah woman’s insistence in finding the exact place in which the atrocity was committed develops into a quest that is haunted by specters from the past. In this paper, I will argue that exposing the story of the Bedouin girl and her community not only allows the reader to reconstruct the marginalized lives of a people who were and remain part of the fabric of a disappearing country but is also an attempt at marking an absent life.

- Abstract
Environmental issues such as the progressive loss of biodiversity on a global scale and climate change cannot be separated from other territorial problems caused by social injustice, economic inequality, access to natural resources, gender violence and the fight for human and nature’s rights. The evaluation of biodiversity management strategies must by necessity draw on a retrospective look at the interpretation of the problem and the conceptual approach of the general territorial management policies in which they are framed. From a critical view, these approaches have different nuances depending on the historical journey, theories and main actors involved with territorial policies in different regions of the world. In this work, we apply qualitative content analysis to contrast the key concepts on which the main European territorial policies of recent decades have been based with the main guidelines of the emerging Latin American territorial perspectives. Thus, we seek to initiate a dialogue between the northern hemisphere’s globally hegemonic notions of nature, territory, biodiversity and its management and new theories and proposals from the South, whilst simultaneously contrasting both with the content of the latest Convention on Biological Biodiversity Strategic Plan 2011–2020. We conclude with some recommendations aimed at building bridges and contributing to the construction of future global conservation strategies from a critical and territorial perspective that tends towards integrating sustainability with social and environmental justice.

The strategies for and the performance of the CMS silicon tracking system alignment during the 2015-2018 data-taking period of the LHC are described. The alignment procedures during and after data taking are explained. Alignment scenarios are also derived for use in the simulation of the detector response. Systematic effects, related to intrinsic symmetries of the alignment task or to external constraints, are discussed and illustrated for different scenarios., Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1037, ISSN:0168-9002, ISSN:1872-9576

- Abstract
The translation of Sufi poetry is a relatively unexplored topic. This paper examines the challenges a translator may encounter when translating Sufi terminology into English, covering the formation of Sufi terms, their nature, and how they function in context. A textual approach to terminology is envisaged, where Sufi concepts are analyzed along with their translation. We analyze terms extracted from the collection of poems by the Sufi mystic al-Ḥallâž (Diwân al-Ḥallâž) and consider their translations by the British scholar Martin Lings in his book Sufi Poems: A Medieval Anthology (Arabic and English ed.).

- Abstract
peer-reviewed, The slippery slope framework of tax compliance emphasizes the importance of trust in authorities as a substantial determinant of tax compliance alongside traditional enforcement tools like audits and fines. Using data from an experimental scenario study in 44 nations from five continents (N = 14,509), we find that trust in authorities and power of authorities, as defined in the slippery slope framework, increase tax compliance intentions and mitigate intended tax evasion across societies that differ in economic, sociodemographic, political, and cultural backgrounds. We also show that trust and power foster compliance through different channels: trusted authorities (those perceived as benevolent and enhancing the common good) register the highest voluntary compliance, while powerful authorities (those perceived as effectively controlling evasion) register the highest enforced compliance. In contrast to some previous studies, the results suggest that trust and power are not fully complementary, as indicated by a negative interaction effect. Despite some between-country variations, trust and power are identified as important determinants of tax compliance across all nations. These findings have clear implications for authorities across the globe that need to choose best practices for tax collection., ACCEPTED, peer-reviewed

46. Review of Post-Millennial Palestine: Literature, Memory, Resistance Edited by Rachel Gregory Fox and Ahmad Qabaha

- Abstract
Coinciding with the onset of the Arab Spring in 2011 and the protests that continued to sweep across the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, the past decade has seen a growing number of English-language studies dealing with Palestinian literature. Some scholars trace specific genres, like the short story or the novel, as aesthetic and political creations in relation to pivotal moments in Palestinian history—the 1948 Nakba, the 1967 Naksa, the 1987-93 First Intifada, and the 2000-05 Second Intifada (Farag 2016; Abu- Manneh 2016)—while others examine Palestinian writings in conjunction with other media (film) or national literatures (American, Israeli) within wider theoretical frameworks, such as postcolonial feminism, diasporic studies, or world literature (Ball 2012; Qabaha 2018; Lustig 2019). Much more scholarship is in the pipeline, as seen in the notes on the contributors to Post-Millennial Palestine: Literature, Memory, and Resistance. This edited volume of ten essays is a welcome and timely contribution to this critical corpus. Its most unique feature is its focus on mainly 21st century literary productions by second- or third-generation survivors of the Nakba; relatively new writers who are equally yet differently invested in the cause and idea of Palestine when compared to canonical authors such as Mahmoud Darwish, Emile Habibi, Fadwa Tuqan, Samira Azzam, and Ghassan Kanafani, to mention but a few. Post-Millennial Palestine takes as its starting point the derailed Oslo Accords of 1993, which could not but have induced a contemporary sensibility and poetics in the face of the failed peace process and the relentless encroachment on Palestinian land in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, accompanied by daily violations of the human and political rights of the occupied. This collection was published only a few months before the latest as- sault on Gaza in May 2021, a tragic event which, in cities around the world, triggered enormous shows of solidari

Vivi Tellas’s Project Museums (1994-2000) invites us to examine the theatricality inherent in museums and, simultaneously, the ways in which theatre draws on functional and aesthetic elements from museums. Focusing on Federico León’s Museo Miguel Ángel Boezzio (1998), I discuss the impact of the use of autobiographical narratives onstage, taking into account observations by Hans-Thies Lehmann regarding this usage in a postdramatic context. I examine the ways in which the play crosses the boundary between real and fictional in order to establish an intimate connection with the audience and present possible modes of understanding the politicization of emotions on stage.

listening - Abstract
peer-reviewed Why do we need to ‘listen’ to materials? What does ‘listening’ mean – is it merely understanding vibrations on our eardrums? Or can our perception of sound have a wider scope, can designers attend to a material’s resonance through their feet or hands, or perhaps through their knowledge and understanding? Is there always a difference between a literal sense of ‘listening’ and its more metaphorical use that also encompasses caring about? Might material resonance travel both ways, given our embeddedness in the material world? This article considers the Western Enlightenment role in separating sound from its material body and the consequences of this. It explores how our changing relationship to sound has distanced the designer from materials and how we might identify fresh tactics for collaborative design by ‘co-listening’ and ‘conversing’ with materials. Through shifting our position to consider ‘materials-as-co-performers’ in the practice of design, both literal and metaphorical approaches to ‘listening’ are explored, together with the dangers inherent in our figurative deafness to materials. Methodologies such as sonic fictional design, and material ‘conversations’ are proposed as a way to explore decolonial, posthuman approaches to co-making in the Anthropocene.

Over the past thirty years, the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) has emerged as one of the most powerful criminal organizations in South America. From its founding in Sao Paulo’s prison system, it has spread rapidly across southern Brazil, contested trafficking routes in Brazil’s northern and northeastern regions, and become a potent force in Paraguay. Drawing on a variety of case studies developed from research in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, the report describes the origins of the PCC, its unique model of organization, and its ability to regulate criminal markets in the areas it controls. The report analyzes the forces that have facilitated the PCC’s rise and expansion, as well as the constraints to its further spread, including increased law enforcement, the rise of rival organizations, and the organizational challenges of expansion. We conclude that although the PCC is facing unprecedented challenges, the organization is resilient to many law enforcement pressures, and the PCC “model” of criminal organization is increasingly being emulated by other criminal groups in the region.
