Vitamin A deficiency poses serious health concerns among the Ghanaian populace, particularly children and pregnant women. The production and consumption of yellow maize, which contains pro-vitamin A carotenoids such as beta carotene, is therefore encouraged. Consequently, yellow maize consumption is fast gaining acceptance. However, in the near future comensurate increases in production must be achieved to ensure food security. In this regard, the aims of the study were to: evaluate farmer willingness to cultivate yellow maize varieties with enhanced beta carotene content, ascertain extent of farmers' knowledge on production constraints and mitigation, and evaluate farmers' perception on nutritional benefits of yellow maize and the effects of vitamin A deficiency. The survey was conducted between January and May 2018 and it covered four districts representing the forest and guinea savanna ecological zones in Ghana. In each district, five communities with 10 participants each were covered. Most yellow maize farmers (78 %) were between 15 and 55 years, 42.5 % of the farmers had no formal education, 29 % had secondary education and only 8 % had tertiary education. The main challenges facing yellow maize (YM) farmers were pest control and low yield due to erratic rainfall. Majority (70 %) of the farmers had heard about vitamin A deficiency and also noticed stunted growth, mental retardation and poor eye sight in their communities but did not link such symptoms to vitamin A deficiency. Most respondents (70 %) were not aware that yellow maize contains beta carotene. Majority (70 %) of the respondents opined that improvement in the beta carotene content of yellow maize will greatly help to drastically minimize vitamin A deficiency and enhance food security. The information elicited from farmers will guide future development of yellow maize varieties for improved production and nutrition. Maize streak disease (MSD) is the most devastating and destructive disease of maize (Zea mays L.) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Field trials were conducted in the 2014 minor and 2015 major cropping seasons to screen 16 and 17 maize genotypes, respectively, for high yield and resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) infections. The plants were scored for disease severity at 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks after planting (WAP) based on a 1-5 visual scale (1= No infection and 5= Very severe infection). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was done to detect the presence of MSV in the diseased leaf samples in order to confirm field resistance. Both phenotypic and PCR test revealed that all the maize genotypes tested in the study were infected by MSV. There was a significant varietal effect on the incidence and severity of MSD in both the major and minor seasonal trials. Genotypes 'Abontem','Aburohemaa', 'Akposoe', 'Dapango', 'Dorke', 'Etubi', 'Honampa', 'Mamaba', 'Obatanpa', 'Omankwa' and PAN 12 showed mild disease symptoms during both major and minor cropping seasons. On the other hand, genotypes 'Dormabin', 'Dzinu-Eve', 'Enibi', Keta 60 and PAN 53 exhibited moderate to severe symptoms during the two cropping seasons. Incidence and severity of MSD were significantly higher in the minor season than in the major season, indicating a significant seasonal effect of MSV on the maize genotypes. The yield and yield components were observed to vary significantly among the different maize genotypes and between the cropping seasons with mean yields significantly higher in the major season than in the minor season. Genotypes 'Abontem', 'Aburohemaa', 'Akposoe', 'Dorke', 'Etubi', 'Honampa', 'Omankwa', 'Obatanpa' and PAN 12 (All improved varieties), which exhibited partial resistance to MSV infection gave high seed yields during both seasons. The improved maize genotypes that were high yielding and resistant to MSV infection should be evaluated for uniform yield trials on farmers' fields towards their release as varieties to farmers. Purpose: Limited information is available on the diversity of tiger nuts in Ghana for improvement. Therefore, evaluating the genetic diversity via the use of morphological descriptors and molecular markers (SSR) should generate substantial evidence to reveal the variability among and within the crop. Research Method: Forty-two (42) accessions of Cyperus esculentus Lativum were collected from major tiger nut cultivation areas (phytogeographic zones) in Ghana and evaluated using 11 morphodescriptors and 9 SSR markers to assess variability among and within the tiger nut accessions and underlined causes. Findings: Significant differences were observed among the accessions in terms of percentage inflorescence (p≤0.01), distance of the last tiller from the main plant (p≤0.05) and the number of tubers per stand (p≤0.05). Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) cluster analysis grouped the accessions into seven clusters including one large heterogenous cluster at 0.94 Euclidean distance, and genetic distance ranged from 0.8 to 1.00. The SSR profiling revealed 141 alleles across 41 of the accessions used for the molecular study with a mean PIC value of 0.78 ± 0.15 and mean observed heterozygosity of 0.12 ± 0.16 coupled with four heterotic UPGMA cluster groupings including one large heterogenous cluster at a similarity coefficient of 0.88. The high variability among the accessions for some of the traits, and the low genetic variability within the accessions in cluster groupings for both morphological and SSR evaluations suggested some level of admixture of genes over years of cultivation. Originality/ Value: The current study has identified some accessions for improvement. The absence of genetic variability among crop genotypes is an impediment to breeding progress, hence mutagenesis could serve as a useful tool to create genetic variation to obtain desirable traits of interest. In this study, four maize genotypes, Obatampa, Dapango, Pann 54 and Honampa which were susceptible to maize streak disease (MSD) were acutely irradiated at 254.3 Gy, using a cobalt 60 ( 60 Co) at a rate of 300 Gy/hr. The irradiated seeds were planted with their parental controls at streak disease highly endemic environment. Field trials for the selected maize genotypes were conducted from the M 1 to M 4 generations to screen for MSD resistance and improved grain yield. Sixteen putative mutants and four individual parental controls were selected across the four maize genotypes at the end of the M 4 generation based on disease severity score and yield indices. Detailed morphological screening and field evaluation of putative mutants showing improved plant architecture, increased grain yield and resistance to maize streak disease were tagged and selected. Obatanpa-induced-genotype was the best mutant identified with a grain yield of 6.8 t ha -1 . Four hundred tubers of four genotypes, two brown and two black tiger nuts were subjected to Ethyl Methanesulfonate (EMS) and Colchicine treatments at concentrations of 0 %, 0.1 %, 0.25 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 % for 24 h. Each genotype had twenty tubers treated with each of the five different concentrations and were planted using Complete Randomized Design (CRD) in a greenhouse. Quantitative data was collected and LD 50 and RD 50 were analysed using Excell 2016 and Genstat 11.2. A general decreasing trend in percentage germination and plant height was observed with increasing concentrations of mutagens applied. An EMS treatment had LD 50 and RD 50 values of 0.97 % and 1.49 % for black and 0.63 % and 1.63 % for brown genotypes. To meet the rising demand for cereal-based food products, it is essential to create parent lines for hybrid development. Evaluating the sensitivity of maize genotypes to gamma rays is critical for successful mass irradiation to induce mutations. This study aimed to assess how maize genotypes respond to gamma radiation and determine an effective dosage for mutation breeding. Six maize genotypes were subjected to gamma radiation doses ranging from 0 to 750 Gy (s) 60 Co. The irradiated seeds were evaluated in controlled conditions and then planted in the field for the assessment of physio-agronomic traits. The lethal dose (LD50) was established based on the germination rate of the M1 generation. Results demonstrated a decrease in germination percentage, plant height, survival rate, root length, and plant photosynthetic rate with escalating gamma radiation doses. The mean LD 50 , determined from the germination data, was 254.3 Gy. The radiation dosage range of 206.71-301.95 Gy proved effective in influencing both quantitative and qualitative characteristics. The cowpea variety Videza , which was used as the control, matures early (70 days after planting), although it produces low yields. Gamma irradiation mutagenesis was used to induce Videza into extra-early maturing and higher yielding mutant genotypes. A single seed descend population was developed for radio-sensitivity test, and a Lethal Dose 50 (LD 50 ) of 240.5 Gy was determined, and applied from a cobalt-60 ( 60 Co) source, to acutely mass irradiate 1800 Videza seeds, at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. The irradiated seeds (M1) were planted to produce M2 seeds bearing plants and subsequently advanced to M3 plants for selection of nine induced plants based on extra earliness and significantly higher seed yields than the parental control. It took 48 days after planting (DAP) for the genotype coded P1N02#1 to reach 50 % maturity followed by 52 DAP for genotypes with codes P4N03#3; P3N01#5; P5N05#6, P4N14#7, P5N07#8, P5N05#10 and 54 DAP for genotype P4N14#11. P1N06#9 had the highest yield (97.38 g/plant), followed by P5N05#10 (95.97 g/plant), P1N08#13 (81.24 g/plant), P2N09#12 (73.94 g/plant), P6N10#19 (70.83 g/plant), P1N06#20 (65.36 kg/plant), P5N07#14 (61.23 g/plant), P4N14# (58.05 g/plant) and P1N08#17 (56.23 g/plant). M3 seeds were advanced to M4 plants for a Preliminary Yield Trial which revealed that induced plants P5N05#10 (1235 kg/ha), P2N09#12 (1206 kg/ha), P5N07#14 (1185 kg/ha), P1N06#20 (1171 kg/ha), P1N06#9 (1051 kg/ha), P1N08#13 (1041 kg/ha), and P6N10#19 (999 kg/ha) outperformed the control (517 kg/ha) and two other commercial varieties. Soybean production is concentrated in the Guinea Savannah agro-ecological zone of Ghana. However, its cultivation is plagued with a number of constraints leading to low yields. A participatory approach was, therefore, used to identify farmers' and processors' preferred soybean traits and production constraints, climate change effects and strategies employed for mitigating these effects in three districts within the soybean growing areas in Northern Ghana. The study revealed that 72.0 % and 68.8 % of farmers in the Tolon and Savelugu districts, respectively, used improved soybean seeds for planting their fields. Over 13.0 % of farmers indicated late maturity as the most important constraint, followed by manual threshing difficulty and terminal drought which results in low grain yield and poor quality. About 70.0 % of farmers opined that climate change effects are causing obvious shifts in the rainfall pattern. Majority of the farmers (94.6 %) indicated that the onset of peak rainfall has changed in the past decade. Almost 44.0% of farmers also indicated that severe drought has affected pods filling in the past. A third (33.3%) of farmers indicated that drought usually sets in at pod initiation. The farmers enumerated some of the effects of early cessation of the rainfall in soybean production as drying up of immature and green seed (28.3%), low grain yield (27.1%) and poor seed quality (22.1%). Some of the mitigation strategies employed by the farmers include early planting (40.0%) and mulching (25.0%) to retain soil moisture for enhanced growth of crops. The order of farmers' preferences new soybean varieties were shattering resistance (16.0%), high grain yield (14.0%), large seeds size (13.1%), and early maturity (11.8%), whereas processors preferred varieties with large seed size (30.6%), high protein content (28.7%), pest resistance (15.9%) and short cooking duration (12.7%). Both the farmers and processors indicated their willingness to pay more for seeds with the desired traits. Cassava is the 6th most important source of dietary energy in the world but its root system architecture (RSA) had seldom been quantified. Ability to select superior genotypes at juvenile stages can significantly reduce the cost and time for breeding to bridge the large yield gap. This study adopted a simple approach to phenotyping RSA traits of juvenile and mature cassava plants to identify genotypic differences and the relationships between juvenile traits and harvest index of mature plants. Root classes were categorised and root and shoot traits of eight (8) juvenile pot-grown cassava genotypes, were measured at 30 and 45 days after planting (DAP). The same or related traits were measured at 7 months after planting of the same genotypes grown in the field while yield and yield components were measured in 12-months old field-grown plants. The field experiment was done in 2017 and repeated in 2018. Differences between genotypes for the measured traits were explored using analysis of variance (ANOVA) while traits in juvenile plants were correlated or regressed onto traits measured in 7- and 12-months old plants. The results show significant genotypic variations for most of the traits measured in both juvenile and 7-months old plants. In the 12-months old plants, differences between genotypes were consistent for both 2017 and 2018. Broad-sense heritability was highest for the number of commercial roots (0.87) and shoot fresh weight (0.78) and intermediate for the total number of roots (0.60), harvest index (0.58), fresh weight of roots (0.45). For all the sampling time points or growth stages, there were greater correlations between traits measured at a particular growth stage than between the same traits at different growth stages. However, some juvenile-mature plant trait relationships were significant, positive and consistent for both 2017 and 2018. For example, total root length and the total number of roots in 30 DAP, and branching density of upper nodal roots in 45 DAP, positively correlated with harvest index of 12-months old plants in both 2017 and 2018. Similarly, the diameter of nodal roots, for example, had a negative, significant correlation with fresh shoot biomass of mature plants in both 2017 and 2018. Regression of traits measured in 30 DAP explained up to 22% and 36% of the variation in HI of mature plants in 2017 and 2018, respectively. It is concluded that the simple, rapid, inexpensive phenotyping approach adopted in this study is robust for identifying genotypic variations in juvenile cassava using root system traits. The development of cassava genotypes with root system traits that increase soil resource acquisition could increase yields on infertile soils but there are relatively few work that has quantified cassava root system architecture (RSA). We used an easily adaptable and inexpensive protocol to: (i) measure genotypic variation for RSA and shoot traits of a range of cassava genotypes; and (ii) identify candidate variables that contribute the largest share of variance. Cassava genotypes were grown in soil-filled pots, maintained at 70% field capacity. Shoot and RSA traits were measured on plants grown up to 30, 45 and 60 days. Multivariate analysis was used to determine major traits contributing to variation. The study showed that cassava roots are adventitious in origin consisting of a main root axis and orders of lateral roots, and therefore the historically used term "fibrous roots" are redundant currently not contributing to clarity. There were significant differences ( P < 0.05) for traits evaluated. The highest relative root growth rate occurred over the first 30 days and ranged from 0.39 to 0.48 cm day -1 . Root fresh weight was significantly correlated with other traits, including root length ( r = 0.79), leaf area ( r = 0.72), number of lower nodal roots ( r = 0.60), indicating that direct selection based on these traits might be sufficient to improve root biomass. Up to the first six principal components explained over 80% of the total variation among the genotypes for the traits measured at 30, 45 and 60 days. Leaf area, root diameter and branching density-related traits were the most important traits contributing to variation. Selection of cassava genotypes based on shoot and root biomass, root diameter and branching density at juvenile growth stage could be successful predictors of nutrient and water-use efficiency in the field. Further studies are required to relate studied juvenile cassava root traits with the performance of field-grown-mature plant with regard to drought, nutrient-use efficiency and yield.
