This study presents a significant advancement in addressing the utilization of environmental additives to improve the properties of drilling mud. The current materials added to drilling fluids could cause a harmful effect on the environment and safety of individuals, highlighting the necessity for alternative additives. In this study, the potential use of orange peel powder (OPP) and Sidr leaf powder (SLP) as environmentally friendly additives to drilling fluid is evaluated. Laboratory tests were conducted to identify the impact of OPP and SLP on the drilling fluid properties. Different weights (1-20) % of OPP and SLP were utilized to prepare the drilling fluid. The results demonstrated that both OPP and SLP affected the rheological properties and filtration of the drilling mud. Notably, the density of the drilling fluid decreased significantly with the addition of crushed Sidr. Attributed to the composition of flavonoids and jujubogenin glycoside in the leaves, and citric acid in the orange peel. The specific weight of SLP and OPP (1.5 and 1.7 respectively) is considerably lower than that of bentonite (2.5), leading to a reduction in density. Sider leaves exhibited a high performance compared to orange peel, with the highest value of yield point, 10 min gel, pH observed at 20 gm of addition. The experimental findings demonstrate the impact of both materials, filtration, viscosity, and alkalinity, with Side leaves proving to be more in enhancing drilling fluid properties.

Surge pressure is supplemental pressure because of the movement of the pipes downward and the swab pressure is the pressure reduction as a result of the drill string's upward movement. Bottom hole pressure is reduced because of swabbing influence. An Investigation showed that the surge pressure has great importance for the circulation loss problem produced by unstable processes in the management pressure drilling (MPD) actions. Through Trip Margin there is an increase in the hydrostatic pressure of mud that compensates for the reduction of bottom pressure due to stop pumping and/or swabbing effect while pulling the pipe out of the hole. This overview shows suggested mathematical/numerical models for simulating surge pressure problems inside the wellbore with adjustable cross-section parts. The developed models require simple input data that may be gotten from the rig location. Pressure variations due to Swabs and surge has been a major concern in the oil industry for numerous years. If the pressure variations become moreover extraordinary, this leads to formation fracture, and formation influx principal to a kick. In the worst circumstances and situations that kick principal on the blowout and put crew life in hazard. By using theoretical investigation and experimental consequences, it established that the surge pressure is a function of the well depth, the drilling tools combination, the diameter of the wellbore, drilling mud properties, drilling pipe operation speed, and acceleration of the drill pipe movement, etc. This review focuses and investigates the essential theory and on software that computes the pressure variations in different flow conditions to predict surge and swab pressure values.

Numerous drilling additives and materials are used continuously because they are necessary to support and give the required properties of the drilling fluid so that to ensure the stability of the borehole. This paper aspires to evaluate the rheological properties of bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey as an alternative to using commercial bentonite. Monitoring and evaluating of the rheological and filtration properties were prepared. This exertion aims to focus on the effect of hematite, and barite on the rheological properties of the three aforementioned bentonite types. An improvement in the rheological properties of bentonite (montmorillonite). Trefawey was observed after adding the previous heavy materials. Hematite has by some means better ability to improve rheological properties compared to other heavy materials. The emulsifying agent used was Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose (HOCH2COONA), as it has provided excellent results parallel to the lignite. The rheological properties of bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey are enhanced by doubling the amount of carboxyl methyl cellulose (HOCH2COONA). The results have proved that the use of weighting materials and emulsifying agent affected the rheological properties of bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey in a direct emulsion. The results have shown that it is more appropriate to use carboxyl methyl cellulose as an emulsifying agent to prepare a direct emulsion than bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey due to its excellent effect in improving the rheological properties of bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey. And it can be said that this effort has succeeded in studying two effects simultaneously. In other words, both heavy substances and emulsifying agent have effects on bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey, in order to obtain a stable emulsion and a clearer view of the behavior of Iraqi bentonite. The above effort has focused on making bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey suitable for the nature of geological layers such as oil shale, limestone and sandstone. This means preparing drilling fluid using bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey to drill the above structures. The study has concluded that it is better to use bentonite (montmorillonite) Trefawey in preparing direct oil emulsions as a stable and successful alternative of imported bentonite.

This effort is related to describe and assess the performance of the Iraqi cement sample planned for oil well-cementing jobs in Iraq. In this paper, major cementing properties which are thickening time, compressive strength, and free water in addition to the rheological properties and filtration of cement slurry underneath definite circumstances are experimentally tested. The consequences point to that the Iraqi cement after special additives encounter the requests of the API standards and can consequently is used in cementing jobs for oil wells. At this research, there is a comparative investigation established on experimental work on the effectiveness of some additives that considered as waste materials which are silica fume, bauxite, and glass powder, and other conventional additives which are: (SCR -100 Retarder, HR-5, FWCA, Hollow Glass Spheres (HGS) and Halad-9) that currently used in our fields on local Iraqi cement and putting foreign cement results as a governor. Chemical analysis for Iraqi cement, imported cement, and waste materials samples was determined using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique and found minor differences in composition between those samples and depending on the results of X-ray, we selecting the appropriate additives to prepare cement slurry samples. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) results show that Iraqi Cement has a low value of silica which is about 18.63% while Omani cement about 37.58%. This research examined the potential of micro silica, bauxite, and waste glass powder to produce sustainable cement slurry. The results showed that adding micro silica and bauxite enhances the performance of Iraqi cement but also leads to a slight decrease in thickening time. To avoid this problem, Superplasticizer is used to make the process of cement pumping more easily, in other words, increase thickening time and increase compressive strength. Furthermore, adding glass powder increase the value of compressive strength. Both additives (waste and conventional) are used for the slurry design for achieving better slurry properties, but waste additives increase and enhance Iraqi cement performance than conventional additives, in other words, making it more effective than commercial cement. Depending on the results of the compressive strength test, the optimal concentration of the waste materials used in this research was found, and then the optimal concentration was used to prepare cement samples. The results showed that the use of waste materials to prepare cement slurry is a promising way to improve the efficiency of cement work and to reduce the negative environmental impact resulting from the industry. The results of the program CemCADE proved to be the sample A and C showed good performance through high cement bonding and ideal distribution of fluids designed to accomplish the cementing process.

The bit record is a part from the daily drilling report which is contain information about the type and the number of the bit that is used to drill the well, also contain data about the used weight on bit WOB ,revolution per minute RPM , rate of penetration ROP, pump pressure ,footage drilled and bit dull grade. Generally we can say that the bit record is a rich brief about the bit life in the hole. The main purpose of this research is to select the suitable bit to drill the next oil wells because the right bit selection avoid us more than one problems, on the other hand, the wrong bit selection cause more than one problem. Many methods are related to bit selection, this research is familiar with four of those methods, which they are: specific energy method, bit dullness way, cost per foot method, offset well bit record and geological information way. Five oil wells have been studied in Rumaila Oil Field in South of Iraq which they are R-531, R-548, R-536, R-544 and R-525. The wells R-531, R-536 and R-525 are vertical wells; the wells R-548 and R-544 are directional wells at angle of inclination 8.79◦ and 16.62◦ respectively.

This research is focusing on finding more effective polymers that leads to enhance the rheological properties of Water Base Muds. The experiments are done for different types of mud for all substances which are Polyacrylamide, Xanthan gum, CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose). This study shows the effect of add polymer to red bentonite mud, effect of add polymer to Iraqi bentonite mud, the effect of add bentonite to polymer mud. The mud properties of Iraqi bentonite blank are enhanced after adding the polymers to the blank mix, CMC gives the highest value of plastic viscosity and Gel strength than others; X-anthan gives the highest value of yield point and gel strength than others. For the red bentonite mud, Polyacrylamide has the highest shear stress and yield point than the others polymers, but Xanthan has the highest effect on plastic viscosity than other polymers. All polymers reduce filtration loss. The polymer solution mud failed to suspend the barite so we cannot use it as drilling fluid even so this mud has good Rheological properties (PV and YP). The maximum amount of each polymer is founded for the studied clay types.

This work aims to analyze and study the bit performance in directional oil wells which leads to get experience about the drilled area by monitoring bit performance and analyzing its work. This study is concerned with Rumaila Oil Field by studying directional hole of one oil well with different angles of inclination. Drilling program was used in order to compare with used parameters (WOB, RPM and FR).in those holes. The effect of the drilling hydraulic system on the bit performance was studied as well as the hydraulic calculation can be done by using Excel program. This study suggests method which is used to predict the value of penetration rate by studying different formation type to choose the best drilling parameters to drill each formation. Finally, the main aim of this research is to have the benefit from the past well drilling data to drill new wells without needing new drilling program for each well, also knowing the problems of each formation to avoid them as soon as possible through drilling the new wells, which will improve the bit performance.

Different additives are used in drilling fluids when the demanded properties cannot be gotten with clays. Drilling muds needs several additives and materials to give good characteristics. There are local alternatives more suitable for enhancing the rheology and filtration of drilling fluids. An experimental work had been conducted to assess the suitability of using potato starch to enhance rheological properties and filtration in drilling mud. This study investigated the potato starch as a viscosifier and fluid losses agent in drilling fluid. Results from this study proved that rheological properties of potato starch mud increased when pH of drilling fluid is increased. Potato starch could be used to enhance gel strength at low pH (approximately 8.6) and viscosifir at high pH mud (approximately 10.8). The experimental work show that the optimum NaOH concentration was between (2-6) lb./bbl and if more than that concentration was used, the relation between pH and plastic viscosity would be inversed. Comparative analysis of mud properties obtained from the potato starch and starch at low pH showed good rheological properties of the starch than for potato starch, while at high pH, both of them nearly showed good rheological properties. In conclusion, potato starch reduced filtration rate of fluid and improved the characteristics and consistency of mud cake as a primary function and showed an effect on the fluid rheology as a second function.

Of the many functions that are performed by the drilling fluid, the most important is to transport cuttings from the bit up the annulus to the surface. Various drilling fluid have been widely used in the oil industry to improve lifting capacity. In this study, three mud type have been used which they are, oil base mud, X-anthan polymer and a mixture of CMC and bentonite ,by using Carrying Capacity Index calculation (CCI) , the Xanthan gave good values of CCI than other studied drilling fluid. By using Sifferman chart and field data from well in south of Iraq and API equation to find cutting concentration in the annulus, The results showed that the used of thick mud increase the lifting capacity and decrease volumetric drill cuttings in the annulus but the using thin mud lead to decrease lifting capacity and increase volumetric drill cuttings in the annulus .The results show that the mud viscosity and flow rate have important role in hole cleaning. Also, the effect of annulus velocity and flow pattern on cutting transport ratio is studied by using field data. The effect of cutting size and OD of drill pipe is also studied. Cutting size is one of the parameters that influence the hole cleaning; large size cutting makes the hole cleaning more difficult. The reducing of annular size of hole by increasing the OD of drill pipe lead to increasing the annular velocity.
