Abstract

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is the next step toward the realization of electricity-producing fusion power plants, and it is planned to be in operation in 2016. ITER has been designed so as to reach the plasma burning condition and to operate with high-elongated unstable plasmas. However, due to the constraints that affect the machine realization, these open-loop unstable high-performance plasmas can hardly be stabilized using the poloidal field coils placed outside the tokamak vessel. For this reason, during the ITER design review phase, it has been proposed to investigate the possibility of using in-vessel coils in order to improve the best achievable performance of the vertical stabilization (VS) system. This paper proposes a new approach for the plasma current, position, and shape control design in the presence of in-vessel coils. Two control loops are designed: a first loop that guarantees the VS driving the voltage applied to in-vessel coils, and a second loop that controls the plasma current and up to 32 geometrical shape descriptors as close as possible to the reference values. The performance of the proposed control system is shown by means of simulations of some cases of interest. Index Terms--Plasma shape control, plasma vertical stabilization (VS), tokamaks control.

Abstract

The high-energy ionized particles collected by the divertor structures in a tokamak reactor cause a localized thermal load around the strike-points, which are the intersections of the separatrix with the divertor tiles. To spread on a larger region this thermal load, it is convenient to resort to a sweeping, i.e., a periodical movement of the strike-points. This paper introduces the new model-based sweeping algorithm recently implemented on the Joint European Torus tokamak, within the eXtreme Shape Controller architecture. Abstract

This paper describes a set of graphic tools for the design and validation of the new plasma shape controller [eXtreme Shape Controller (XSC)], which has been recently implemented at the Joint European Torus tokamak. The XSC enables operation with high elongation and high triangularity plasmas. The software suite, which is called XSC Tools, has been developed to automate the design procedure of the XSC. These tools make use of graphic user interfaces to allow the nonspecialist users to prepare for new operative scenarios, without the help from modeling and control specialists. Once a new controller is generated, all its parameters are saved into a text file, which is used to perform the validation of the scenario via simulations. The same file is then loaded by the real-time code running on the plant, without any further processing. This feature guarantees that the controller, which is running on the plant, is exactly the same one validated through simulations. An additional effort has been made in order to make the XSC Tools machine independent, i.e., to enable their use on the different tokamaks. Abstract

We focus on the estimation of the minimum poloidal field coil voltages for the plasma shape control in a tokamak. For given coil locations and for a class of disturbances we propose a procedure for the evaluation of the minimum voltages needed to guarantee that the plasma boundary displacement remains within specified limits. The impact of this problem on the minimization of the power supply cost is discussed for the case of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). 12. The influence of out-of-straightness imperfection in Physical-Theory models of bracing members on seismic performance assessment of concentric braced structures

Abstract

In physical theory models, the hysteretic response of concentric braces is simulated by modelling the bracings with two nonlinear fibre-section beam–column elements connected together with an initial out-ofstraightness imperfection (Δ0). The width of such imperfection is the parameter governing the numerical prediction of the brace buckling. In this paper, the accuracy of different formulations of Δ0 is investigated and validated against monotonic and cyclic experimental results from literature carried out on different bracing configurations. Correlations and measures of scatter between the predicted response and experimental performance are evaluated. A statistical analysis on both X-braced and inverted-V-braced frames based on Monte Carlo simulation is presented and discussed for the following reasons: (a) in order to account for the dispersion of the nonlinear dynamic-evaluated seismic performance due to epistemic uncertainties associated with examined formulations for camber width and (b) to provide modelling correction factors of simulated interstorey drift demand. The analysis shows that the formulations used for Δ0 affect the drift demand, the collapse mechanism and have a noticeably impact on the seismic response parameters at collapse. In particular, inverted-V-braced frames are more influenced than X-braced configurations, because the prediction of brace–beam interaction is very sensitive to Δ0.

Abstract

Considering the effects that plasma disruptions can have, we focus on the Vertical Displacement Events (VDEs) in IGNITOR, the high field compact machine designed for the investigation of fusion burning plasmas at or close to ignition. The stabilization of highly elongated plasma is assured on the fast time scale (tens of ms) by an integrated system designed to control on a slower time scale (hundreds of ms) also the plasma shape and the plasma current. We will discuss two different approaches toward a possible mitigation of the VDEs. The first technique considers the main physical variables related to this instability, limiting the parametric analysis to those variables that can be effectively measured, modeled and controlled with suitable actuators so as to avoid unsafe operation. The second approach consists of the optimization of the equilibrium configurations so as to guarantee better control margins while keeping the main shape constraints. This will be done using the so-called dynamical allocation of the poloidal field coil currents. The aim is to achieve the best possible compromise between keeping the desired plasma equilibrium configuration and using a set of currents far enough from the saturation of the amplifiers.

28. Magnetic control of a tokamak plasma

Abstract

he plasma in a tokamak is magnetically confined through electromagnetic fields generated by a set of poloidal field coils, with feedforward nominal voltages or currents based on an approximate plasma model. Therefore, feedback control is necessary. A good magnetic control is essential for achieving good performance in present devices and expected to be of paramount importance in future tokamaks with a burning plasma due to the more stringent requirements in terms of plasma-wall clearance, stability margins, limited number of tolerable disruptions and so on. Magnetic fields are able to control plasma current, position and shape as well as three dimensional instabilities on the resistive time scales (resistive wall modes). They also have an influence on the control of the plasma current density profile. This paper focuses on the axisymmetric control of plasma current, position and shape, illustrating modelling assumptions and techniques, controller design procedures, assessment of controller performance and magnetic diagnostic requirements. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

A new model-based plasma current and shape controller has been set up and tested on the JET Tokamak with the existing active circuits and control. The installation has been carried out without causing any interference to the plasma operation and without requiring a long commissioning time. Eventually, the new controller was used on really extremely shaped internal transport barrier experiments at high poloidal beta and in the presence of quite large variations of the plasma current density profile (variation range Δβpol up to 1.5 and Δli up to 0.5). The extreme shape controller (XSC) controller architecture and philosophy also offer new interesting opportunities, e.g., the separatrix sweeping on the divertor plates without significantly affecting the overall plasma shape, and the possibility of improving the overall tokamak performance via combined control of plasma shape, current and profile. The adopted methodology constitutes also an important test bed for feedback control strategies of ITER relevance.

The work summarized in this thesis is devoted to investigate the seismic response of eccentric braced frames in simple and dual configuration (namely structural systems made of moment-resisting frames in parallel with braced frames) designed with the combined use of high strength steel (HSS) and of mild carbon steel (MCS). In particular, the first part of the thesis concerns the issues related to both design and verification check. In the second part, a wide and comprehensive parametric study is described and discussed in order to characterize the performance of an ensemble of reference buildings. To this aim, several design parameters are examined, such as: the number of storeys the length of bays, the grade of steel, the steel column sections and the soil foundation. The results from both nonlinear static and incremental dynamic analyses are presented and discussed thus allowing to draft novel design to improve the seismic performance of the examined structural typology. In the third part of the thesis, on the basis of the numerical results obtained from the parametric study, a preparatory study addressed to design the experimental setup for a real scale steel building made of dual Eccentric braced frame having removable links. The aim is to investigate the recentering capacity that the moment resisting spans may provide.

Abstract

A modification of the FTU tokamak (toroidal field BT = 8T, plasma current IP = 1.6MA, minor radius a = 0.3m, major radius R = 0.93m) is proposed in order to extend the FTU operation to strongly shaped plasmas (FTU-D: R = 1m, a = 0.18 - 0.2m, elongation = 1.6, triangularity up to = 0.8). FTU has a circular vacuum vessel and was built to produce circular plasmas, however unbalancing the currents in the windings of the air core transformer a plasma shaping can be produced. Single Null (SN) and Double Null (DN) equilibria have been studied with a maximum current in the range 0.350-0.450 MA. The scientific aim of the project is the investigation of the advanced tokamak operation, characterised by the simultaneous achievement of high (normalised beta) and high bootstrap current fraction ( fB) in regimes with high-energy confinement obtained by current and pressure profile control. The main features of FTU-D, with respect to other existing tokamaks, are the high magnetic field ( BT = 5 - 2.5T), the high density and aspect ratio value (A = R/a = 5-6) and the possibility of investigating regimes with dominant electron heating.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the plasma shape and current control in a large, next generation tokamak characterized by long-duration plasma discharges. The new features of these fusion devices are described and their impact on the feedback control requirements are investigated. Many of the controller design issues are addressed in the H∞/μ synthesis framework, including the model reduction, the power constraints, the voltage limits and plant uncertainties. The application to the case of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) shows the effectiveness of this approach for the design of plasma controllers.
