Growing forests is an effective way of removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Forestation projects were started in China, Germany, and the Middle East. Saudi Arabia announced its ambitious “Saudi Green Initiative,” intending to plant ten billion trees. Given the insufficient rainfall to support the initiative, vegetated areas will require irrigation, effectively increasing evaporation. In addition, those areas have a lower albedo than bare land, absorbing more solar radiation. Enhancing precipitation due to the recycling of evaporated water is important as it reduces the amount of freshwater required for irrigation.In this study, we focus on the regional climate impact of irrigated forested or vegetated areas on temperature and precipitation over the Arabian Peninsula to quantify their effect on livability and evaluate the water recycling potential. First, we studied the climate effect of irrigated farming developing over vast areas in Saudi Arabia since the 1980s. The agricultural areas were mapped using available satellite-based observations from the Landsat platforms, which capture optical and thermal data every 16 days at a resolution of 30 m to 100 m. Second, we projected the climate impact of widespread forestation over the Arabian Peninsula.The analysis of the long-term precipitation changes caused by irrigated farming is hindered by the lack of in situ observations and the limitations of global-scale observation data sets. Most reanalysis products have contradictory evaporation trends and indicate an overall reduction in rainfall since the 1980s. The recycled precipitation cannot be estimated reliably because of reanalysis increments and background rainfall variability. Presumably, the local increase in rains occurs downstream of the irrigated areas rather than over them. Along with the analysis of observations, we conducted numerical experiments mimicking the effect of irrigated agricultural fields using a non-hydrostatic regional meteorological model (WRF), covering the whole Arabian Peninsula by a 9x9 km2 grid, with 3x3 km2 nesting over the irrigated areas. Irrigation water is accounted for by tagging moisture evaporated from agricultural regions. The amount of tagged water vapor falling as rain represents recycled precipitation. The simulated evaporation and local temperature response strongly depends on the level of irrigation. Large-scale subsidence suppresses the local deep convection over most parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Strong turbulence quickly mixes evaporated water vapor within a six km thick atmospheric boundary layer, preventing precipitation in shallow convection so that the fraction of recycled rainfall appears to be low.

Atmospheric moisture convergence on ice sheets provides an estimate of snow accumulation, which is critical to quantifying sea-level changes. In the case of East Antarctica, we computed moisture transport from 1980 to 2016 in five reanalyses and in radiosonde observations. Moisture convergence in reanalyses is more consistent than net precipitation but still ranges from 72 to 96 mm yr−1 in the four most recent reanalyses, ERA-Interim, NCEP CFSR, JRA 55 and MERRA 2. The representation of long-term variability in reanalyses is also inconsistent, which justified resorting to observations. Moisture fluxes are measured on a daily basis via radiosondes launched from a network of stations surrounding East Antarctica. Observations agree with reanalyses on the major role of extreme advection events and transient eddy fluxes. Although assimilated, the observations reveal processes that reanalyses cannot model, some due to a lack of horizontal and vertical resolution, especially the oldest, NCEP DOE R2. Additionally, the observational time series are not affected by new satellite data unlike the reanalyses. We formed pan-continental estimates of convergence by aggregating anomalies from all available stations. We found statistically significant trends neither in moisture convergence nor in precipitable water.

We present in this paper the results of the Russian Academy of Sciences North Atlantic Atmospheric Downscaling (RAS-NAAD) project, which provides a 40-yr 3D hindcast of the North Atlantic (10°–80°N) atmosphere at 14-km spatial resolution with 50 levels in the vertical direction (up to 50 hPa), performed with a regional setting of the WRF-ARW 3.8.1 model for the period 1979–2018 and forced by ERA-Interim as a lateral boundary condition. The dataset provides a variety of surface and free-atmosphere parameters at sigma model levels and meets many demands of meteorologists, climate scientists, and oceanographers working in both research and operational domains. Three-dimensional model output at 3-hourly time resolution is freely available to the users. Our evaluation demonstrates a realistic representation of most characteristics in both datasets and also identifies biases mostly in the ice-covered regions. High-resolution and nonhydrostatic model settings in NAAD resolve mesoscale dynamics first of all in the subpolar latitudes. NAAD also provides a new view of the North Atlantic extratropical cyclone activity with a much larger number of cyclones as compared with most reanalyses. It also effectively captures highly localized mechanisms of atmospheric moisture transports. Applications of NAAD to ocean circulation and wave modeling are demonstrated.

Due to the increased ability of the air to hold moisture with temperature, precipitation in Antarctica is expected to increase significantly over the next century. This process will undoubtedly lead to an increase in snow accumulation on the continent, thereby partially mitigating future sea level rise. However, recent observed trends in temperature and snow accumulation in Antarctica are insignificant and paradoxical. The role played by moisture intrusions in temperature and precipitation variability could partly explain this phenomenon. These events are known to transport warm air masses from the oceans to the Antarctic continent, but only individual and unrelated intrusion events have been described so far. In an earlier study of the Dronning Maud Land region, the description of atmospheric rivers (ARs) provided an innovative view to describe high intensity moisture intrusions. In this thesis, we develop an atmospheric river detection algorithm adapted to the polar regions, in order to create a climatology of these events at the Antarctic scale. Using the outputs of the regional climate model, MAR (Regional Atmospheric Model), we evaluate the impacts of atmospheric rivers on the melting in West Antarctic, ice-shelf stability on the Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves, and on snowfall across the Antarctic ice sheet.Atmospheric rivers are infrequent events with coastal areas of Antarctica experiencing AR conditions around only three days per year on average and this value is even lower in Antarctic interior. However, ARs control surface melting processes on West Antarctica and precipitation variability on East Antarctica. In the west, ARs entering the interior of the continent cause positive anomalies in downward longwave radiation via highly liquid-laden clouds and wind, resulting in a marked foehn effect along leeward slopes. Between 1979 and 2017, rivers were thus associated with about 40% of the summer melt on the Ross Ice Shelf (nearly 100% at higher altitudes on Marie Byrd Land) and 40-80% of the winter melt along the ice shelves of the Antarctic Peninsula. In summer, these rivers also contribute to the melting of the Larsen ice shelves located east of the Peninsula. Their direct contribution to cumulative melting is more limited than in winter because the intense solar radiation in summer allows daily melting to occur. However, ARs caused 60-80% of the most intense melt/runoff events as well as high temperature extremes. This melting is linked to the Foehn effect and the positive longwave radiative fluxes anomalies over the eastern Peninsula during AR passages. The melt water accumulates in lakes and crevasses on the ice shelf surface, a preliminary step in ice shelf disintegration by hydraulic fracturing. ARs also push sea ice away from the coast, allowing swells to hit and apply strain to the ice-shelf margins. ARs can thus trigger the final disintegration of ice shelves. In particular, ARs were present during the disintegration of the Larsen A ice shelf in late January 1995 and the Larsen B ice shelf in late February/early March 2002. Overall, since 2000, 12 of the last 20 calving or collapse events along the Larsen Ice Shelves have been preceded (within 5 days) by the arrival of an AR. Finally, atmospheric rivers are responsible for the majority of the most intense precipitation in Antarctica. In eastern Antarctica, 20-30% of the snow accumulation occurred during of AR landfalls. Although this value remains modest, we observe that AR activity controls the trends and interannual variability of snowfall in this part of the continent. This control even extends to most of the ice sheet between 1980 and 2018.Ultimately, ARs play an important role in the Antarctic surface mass balance. Therefore, a change in atmospheric blocking conditions around Antarctica during the 21st century would lead to changes in the Antarctic surface mass balance. Such changes are currently ignored in climate change impact projections.

The Dry Land Belt (DLB) of Northern Eurasia is the largest contiguous dryland on Earth. Changes in DLB during the last century have included resource extraction (e.g., coal, oil, gas, and mineral ores), rapid land cover and land use change (e.g., expansion of irrigated croplands and cities), institutional shifts (e.g., collapse of the Soviet Union, China’s entry to the World Trade Organization), global and regional climatic changes, and natural disturbances (e.g., wildfire, drought, dust). These factors intertwine, overlap, and sometimes mitigate but sometimes feedback to each other exacerbating their synergistic and cumulative effects. Thus, it is important to document properly the key external and internal factors and to characterize structural relationships among them to study better approaches to alleviating negative consequences of these regional environmental changes. This chapter addresses key climatic changes observed over the DLB in recent decades and it outlines possible linkages of these changes with other external and internal factors of the contemporary regional environmental change and human activities within the DLB.

Recent major melting events in West Antarctica have raised concerns about a potential hydrofracturing and ice shelf instability. These events often share common forcings of surface melt-like anomalous radiative fluxes, turbulent heat fluxes and fohn winds. Using an atmospheric river detection algorithm developed for Antarctica together with surface melt datasets, we produced a climatology of atmospheric river-related surface melting around Antarctica and show that atmospheric rivers are associated with a large percentage of these surface melt events. Despite their rarity (around 12 events per year in West Antarctica), atmospheric rivers are associated with around 40% of the total summer meltwater generated across the Ross Ice Shelf to nearly 100% in the higher elevation Marie Byrd Land and 40–80% of the total winter meltwater generated on the Wilkins, Bach, George IV and Larsen B and C ice shelves. These events were all related to high-pressure blocking ridges that directed anomalous poleward moisture transport towards the continent. Major melt events in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet only occur about a couple times per decade, but a 1–2 °C warming and continued increase in atmospheric river activity could increase the melt frequency with consequences for ice shelf stability. Atmospheric rivers associated with blocking events are related to a large fraction of the surface ice melt events in West Antarctica, suggest observation-based analyses of atmospheric dynamics and West Antarctic surface melt.

The major sources of atmospheric moisture over the Red Sea are analyzed using ERA-Interim for the 1979–2013 period. The vertical structure of moisture transports across the coastlines has been computed separately for the western and eastern coasts of the Red Sea. The vertical structure of the moisture transport from the Red Sea to the continents is dominated by a breeze-like circulation in the near-surface layer and the Arabian high above 850 hPa. The lower-layer, breeze-like circulation is acting to export the moisture to the northwest of Africa and to the Arabian Peninsula and contributes about 80% of the moisture exports from the Red Sea, dominating over the transport in the upper layer, where the moisture is advected to the Arabian Peninsula in the northern part of the sea and to the African continent in the southern part. Integrated moisture divergence over the Red Sea decreased from the early 1980s to 1997 and then increased until the 2010s. Associated changes in the moisture export were provided primarily by the increasing intensity of the breeze-associated transports. The transports above the boundary layer, while being strong across the western and the eastern coasts, have a smaller effect on the net moisture export. The interannual variability of the moisture export in the near-surface layer was found to be closely correlated with the variability in sea surface temperature, especially in summer. Implications of the observed changes in the moisture advection for the hydrological cycle of the Middle East are discussed.

In this study, we analyse fast (within 30 days) response of the atmospheric rivers and storm tracks positioning over the western European coast to the Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events. Analysis is done on the basis of North Atlantic Atmospheric Downscaling (NAAD) product with 14 km and 3-hourly spatial and temporal resolutions. Atmospheric rivers and cyclones are synoptic atmospheric phenomena characterized by the strong impact onto the mid- and high latitude costal zones. This impact results in extreme precipitation and wind events, floodings, long wet episodes, etc. Among other mechanisms controlling the positioning of the storm track and atmospheric rivers, we show that SSW events cause a significant southward shift of both storm track and location of the hit of the European coast by atmospheric rivers within 30 days after the SSW event. Thus, we provide a qualitative and quantitative measure of the SSWs impact on the location of the potentially extreme weather events over the European coast with 30 days predictive time scale.

The atmospheric water cycle of the Arctic is evaluated via seven global reanalyses and in radiosonde observations covering the 1979–2013 period. In the regional moisture budget, evaporation and precipitation are the least consistent terms among different datasets. Despite the assimilation of radiosoundings, the reanalyses present a tendency to overestimate the moisture transport. Aside from this overestimation, the reanalyses exhibit a remarkable agreement with the radiosondes in terms of spatial and temporal patterns. The northern North Atlantic, subpolar North Pacific, and Labrador Sea stand out as the main gateways for moisture to the Arctic in all reanalyses. Because these regions correspond to the end of the storm tracks, the link between moisture transports and extratropical cyclones is further investigated by decomposing the moisture fluxes in the mean flow and transient eddy parts. In all reanalyses, the former term tends to cancel out when averaged over a latitude circle, leaving the latter to provide the bulk of the midlatitude moisture imports (89%–94% at 70°N). Although the Arctic warms faster than the rest of the world, the impact of these changes on its water cycle remains ambiguous. In most datasets, evaporation, precipitation, and precipitable water increase in line with what is expected from a warming signal. At the same time, the moisture transports have decreased in all the reanalyses but not in the radiosonde observations, though none of these trends is statistically significant. The fluxes do not scale with the Clausius–Clapeyron relation because the increasing humidity is not correlated with the meridional wind, particularly near the surface.
