1. Comparison of nutrient management recommendations and soil health indicators in southern Idaho

Abstract

Abstract Advanced soil tests can improve the estimation of plant available nutrients to better match fertilizer additions with plant needs and, in some cases, provide a measure of soil health. In the present study, 334 samples from four separate studies were evaluated using the Soil Health Tool (SHT) vs. the standard regional (University of Idaho [UI] Guidelines) method for determining fertilizer application, assuming a crop of spring irrigated wheat. Recommended N applications using the SHT were ∼138 kg ha−1 greater than the UI recommendations. Nitrogen mineralization predicted using the SHT (47 kg ha−1) was similar to the N mineralization value used in the regional methodology (50 kg ha−1). The P fertilizer recommendations were similar between the two methodologies with the SHT recommending, on average 4.7 kg ha−1 less P than the regional method. The lower P recommendation are likely due to a lack of accounting for the effects of high calcium carbonate levels on the P availability from fertilizers in this region. The soil health score (SHS) was correlated with measures of soil C but was not positively correlated to crop yield. In some instances, increasing SHS were correlated with decreases in crop quality as the addition of manure increased soil C but also created issues such as high salt contents and release of late season N. With modification to more accurately represent irrigation conditions and including sampling to greater soil depths, the SHT may be tailored to better estimate soil nutrient status and provide better fertilizer recommendations for the region.

2. Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics in Semi-Arid Irrigated Cropping Systems

Abstract

Insufficient characterization of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in semi-arid climates contributes uncertainty to SOC sequestration estimates. This study estimated changes in SOC (0–30 cm depth) due to variations in manure management, tillage regime, winter cover crop, and crop rotation in southern Idaho (USA). Empirical data were used to drive the Denitrification Decomposition (DNDC) model in a “default” and calibrated capacity and forecast SOC levels until 2050. Empirical data indicates: (i) no effect (p = 0.51) of winter triticale on SOC after 3 years; (ii) SOC accumulation (0.6 ± 0.5 Mg ha–1 year–1) under a rotation of corn-barley-alfalfax3 and no change (p = 0.905) in a rotation of wheat-potato-barley-sugarbeet; (iii) manure applied annually at rate 1X is not significantly different (p = 0.75) from biennial application at rate 2X; and (iv) no significant effect of manure application timing (p = 0.41, fall vs. spring). The DNDC model simulated empirical SOC and biomass C measurements adequately in a default capacity, yet specific issues were encountered. By 2050, model forecasting suggested: (i) triticale cover resulted in SOC accrual (0.05–0.27 Mg ha–1 year–1); (ii) when manure is applied, conventional tillage regimes are favored; and (iii) manure applied treatments accrue SOC suggesting a quadratic relationship (all R2 > 0.85 and all p < 0.0001), yet saturation behavior was not realized when extending the simulation to 2100. It is possible that under very large C inputs that C sequestration is favored by DNDC which may influence “NetZero” C initiatives.

Abstract

Potential carbon mineralization (Cmin) is a commonly used indicator of soil health, with greater Cmin values interpreted as healthier soil. While Cmin values are typically greater in agricultural soils managed with minimal physical disturbance, the mechanisms driving the increases remain poorly understood. This study assessed bacterial and archaeal community structure and potential microbial drivers of Cmin in soils maintained under various degrees of physical disturbance. Potential carbon mineralization, 16S rRNA sequences, and soil characterization data were collected as part of the North American Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements (NAPESHM). Results showed that type of cropping system, intensity of physical disturbance, and soil pH influenced microbial sensitivity to physical disturbance. Furthermore, 28% of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), which were important in modeling Cmin, were enriched under soils managed with minimal physical disturbance. Sequences identified as enriched under minimal disturbance and important for modeling Cmin, were linked to organisms which could produce extracellular polymeric substances and contained metabolic strategies suited for tolerating environmental stressors. Understanding how physical disturbance shapes microbial communities across climates and inherent soil properties and drives changes in Cmin provides the context necessary to evaluate management impacts on standardized measures of soil microbial activity. 10. Physical characterization and evaluation of HPLC columns packed with superficially porous particles

Abstract

Two HPLC columns packed with superficially porous packing material (Kinetex™ 1.7 and 2.6 μm C18 particles) were evaluated in terms of their physical properties and performance characteristics. These columns were compared to a column packed with a sub-2 μm totally porous material and to a Halo(TM) column packed with 2.7 μm C18 superficially porous packing. The columns packed with superficially porous particles displayed a comparably narrower size distribution, which is narrower than the distribution of the totally porous sub-2 μm particles. Physical characteristics of the Kinetex™ particles were evaluated in terms of surface area, pore diameter, and specific pore volume. Total, external, internal, and shell porosities among the four different columns were evaluated and compared. The specific permeability for the Kinetex™ columns showed values close to those predicted by the Kozeny-Carman equation. All four columns were evaluated in terms of their chromatographic performance and compared using the Knox equation. The columns packed with the 2.6 and 2.7 μm superficially porous materials showed reduced plate heights below 2, whereas the sub-2 μm particles showed values of 2.2 and above.
