Purpose: The goal of this project was to assess whether speech-language pathologists (SLPs) feel adequately prepared and comfortable interacting with multicultural clients. To determine whether an SLP feels prepared to interact with, to assess, to teach, or to treat a multicultural client, a 25-question survey was developed and administered. Method: The survey included questions pertaining to the SLPs' experiences with other cultures, both professional and personal, if the SLP speaks more than one language, and if the SLP has received any formal training on how to interact with multicultural clients. The survey was sent out via e-mail to 814 licensed SLPs practicing in preschool, elementary, and secondary school settings in Mississippi and Alabama. A total of 38 surveys were returned, and 36 complete responses were obtained. Results: Preliminary results indicated that many SLPs received minimal multicultural training and felt prepared to work with multicultural clients based on personal and professional experiences; however, they also believed that they could benefit from additional formal multicultural training. Conclusions: Surveyed SLPs do not report receiving adequate training for serving multicultural clients. Many reported that they would benefit from additional formal training in multiculturalism to better serve clients. Further research is indicated to determine the effectiveness of graduate-level training in multiculturalism.

To study operational, management, and educational experiences of student-operated restaurants (SOR) through the perspective of SOR managers across the US.Qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with 19 SOR managers. Qualitative case study procedures were used for analysis.Three themes emerged: (1) objectives and processes in SORs, (2) support received by SORs, and (3) individual experiences in SORs. Within these themes, participants described various methods and designs used to operate SORs. However, participants ultimately perceived that SORs were successful in helping students gain foodservice management skills and be better prepared to be future foodservice managers.Foodservice managers can connect nutrition principles to practice for consumers. Strong foodservice education through SORs can play a role in students being more competent and prepared for foodservice management careers. Findings provide ideas for foodservice educators as they initiate or refine the use of SORs.

Many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are underprepared to serve children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), despite a growing need and increased expectation for ASD expertise. To understand this practice gap, 60 SLPs and 26 parents of children with ASDs were surveyed regarding SLP knowledge and competency. Of concern was that only about 50% of SLPs correctly identified ASD defining criteria. Respondents rated eight SLP practices as Important to Very Important, but SLPs reported being only Somewhat Competent to Competent. The parents’ rating of SLP competency was significantly lower than parental ratings of importance for one educational practice, use of nonstandardized assessment and observational methods. Also, parents rated the development of the Individualized Education Program significantly higher in importance than SLPs rated it. Findings varied for ASD specialty subgroups. Results support socially valid improvements in preparation for SLPs on the frontlines of assessment, treatment, and development of health and educational systems for children with ASDs.

5501 Background: The Interleukin-6/JAK/STAT3 axis, via an increase in cancer stem-like cell (CSC) survival, is a reported driver of chemotherapy resistance. We hypothesized that addition of the JAK1/2 inhibitor ruxolitinib to standard chemotherapy would be tolerable and, by targeting therapy-resistant cells, improve the progression-free survival (PFS) of ovarian/fallopian tube/primary peritoneal carcinoma (OV/FT/PPC) patients treated in the up-front setting. Methods: Patients with OV/FT/PPC dispositioned to neoadjuvant chemotherapy were eligible for NRG-GY007 (NCT #02713386). In phase I, treatment was with dose-dense paclitaxel (P) 70 or 80 mg/m2 days 1, 8, and 15; carboplatin (C) AUC 5 or 6 day 1; and ruxolitinib (R) 15mg PO BID, every 21 days. In the absence of tumor progression or an inability to tolerate surgery, interval tumor reductive surgery (TRS) was required after cycle 3. After TRS, 3 additional cycles were administered, followed by maintenance ruxolitinib until progression, unacceptable toxicity, or voluntary withdrawal. In phase II, patients were randomized to dose-dense PC (arm 1) or dose-dense PC plus ruxolitinib (arm 2) at the phase I-defined dose of 15mg PO BID. After 3 cycles, TRS was performed, followed by another 3 cycles of the randomized regimen, without maintenance ruxolitinib. The primary phase II endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Results: 17 patients were enrolled in phase I. The MTD was P at 70, C at 5, and R at 15, which was chosen as the phase II dose. 130 patients were enrolled in phase II with a median follow-up of 24 months. There were five Grade 5 events in phase II, 2 in arm 1 and 3 in arm 2, with all except one being unrelated to therapy; a G5 febrile neutropenia in arm 2 was considered possibly related. In arm 2 there was potential trend towards higher grade 3-4 anemia (64% v 27% control), grade 3-4 neutropenia (53% v 37%), thromboembolic events (12.6% v 2.4%), and febrile neutropenia (6% v 0%). The HR for PFS was 0.702 (90% 1-sided CI = 0-0.89, log-rank p = 0.059). The median PFS in arm 1 was 11.6 versus 14.6 in arm 2. The overall survival HR = 0.785 (90% CI = 0.44 to 1.39, p = 0.70). There were no differences between rates of total gross resection. Conclusions: Ruxolitinib 15mg PO BID was well-tolerated with acceptable toxicity in combination with dose-dense PC. The primary endpoint of prolongation of PFS was achieved in the experimental arm. Further study of this combination can be considered. This trial also demonstrates the feasibility of early-phase randomized studies with novel agents and biospecimen collection in front line neoadjuvant treatment of ovarian cancer. Objective Explore how student-operated restaurant (SOR) managers consider and apply nutrition principles and menu planning in SORs. Design Nineteen SOR managers in the US were recruited to complete an online survey and participate in a 30–60-minute interview. Interviews were conducted via video conference and explored the menu and nutritional characteristics of the SOR at each facility. Setting SORs across the US. Participants Managers of SORs. Phenomenon of Interest Menu and nutrition characteristics and their use in SORs. Analysis Demographic data were analyzed using SPSS. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo software. Results Thematic analysis revealed nutrition in practice, nutrition philosophy, and menu planning as the 3 major themes. Nutrition in practice captured the role of nutrition in menu planning, special diets, and healthy options. Nutrition philosophy subthemes explored issues such as the purpose of the SOR experience and instructor perspective on nutrition. Menu planning subthemes addressed issues regarding the menu development process, including menu planning that was student-driven and faculty-driven. Conclusions and Applications Approaches to menu planning had varying degrees of student involvement. Although nutrition was stated as a consideration in menu planning, most programs did not include formalized nutrition criteria as part of the SOR curriculum.
