Severe complications such as mucositis, xerostomia, and osteoradionecrosis highlight the critical role of optimal oral hygiene practices in managing these conditions. The presented case involves a 38-year-old male with a history of verrucous carcinoma, undergoing composite resection, modified neck dissection, and pectoralis major myocutaneous flap reconstruction. Adjuvant radiotherapy requires a comprehensive approach to minimize complications. Here, the focus is on fluoride treatment, specifically Fluoritop SR Dental Varnish, to prevent radiation-related caries. A multidisciplinary approach, including fluoride application, vigilant monitoring, patient education, and collaboration, is crucial for minimizing complications in oral malignancy radiotherapy. Emphasizing fluoride’s significance in preventing radiation-related caries, this care plan contributes to awareness and improves oral health outcomes in this patient population.

Background: Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors are recommended for the treatment of heart failure due to their cardioprotective effects, despite primarily being used as antidiabetic medications. However, the comparative profile of two antidiabetic drugs, sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors with dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor remains unclear. Study hypothesis: This study aims to compare the safety and efficacy profiles of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors versus dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor drugs. Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a complex metabolic disorder manifested by hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and deteriorating beta‐cell function. A way to prevent progression of the disease might be to enhance beta‐cell function and insulin secretion. However, most previous studies examined beta‐cell function while patients were using glycemia‐lowering agents without an adequate period off medications (washout). In the present review we focus on studies with a washout period. We performed a literature search (2010 to June 2021) using beta‐cell function and enhancement. The evidence shows that beta‐cell function can be enhanced. Bariatric surgery and very low calorie diets show improvement in beta‐cell function in many individuals. In addition, use of glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists for prolonged periods (3 years or more) can also lead to improvement of beta‐cell function. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms leading to improved beta‐cell function and identify agents that could enhance beta‐cell function in patients with T2DM.

Background: Achieving an optimal shade match for these restorations is crucial for aesthetic outcomes. The thickness of zirconia/glass veneer and the choice of implant abutment material play vital roles in determining the final shade of implant restorations. Materials and Methods: This study investigated the influence of zirconia/glass veneer thickness (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm) and implant abutment material (zirconia and titanium) on the final shade of implant restorations. A total of 60 identical implant restorations were fabricated and divided into four groups based on the combinations of veneer thickness and abutment material. The shade of each restoration was assessed using a shade guide, and color differences (ΔE) were measured with a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using statistical tests (e.g., ANOVA). Results: The results indicated that the veneer thickness significantly influenced the final shade of implant restorations. Restorations with 0.5 mm veneer thickness exhibited a lower ΔE value (indicating a closer shade match) compared to those with 1.0 mm veneer thickness. Additionally, the choice of implant abutment material had a minor but statistically significant effect on shade. Zirconia abutments yielded slightly better shade-matching results compared to titanium abutments. Conclusion: In implant restorations, the thickness of the zirconia/glass veneer plays a critical role in achieving a desirable shade match. A veneer thickness of 0.5 mm is recommended for optimal aesthetic outcomes.

Background. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare immune-mediated pathology involving inflammatory demyelination of the central nervous system. Case Presentation. In this case report, we present the case of a nine-year-old female who exhibited altered mental status and focal neurological deficit, subsequently diagnosed as ADEM based on clinical presentation and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The patient was managed symptomatically along with glucocorticoids. Conclusion. ADEM must be suspected when a patient, especially a child, presents with prodromal symptoms followed by multifocal neurological symptoms. Diagnosis can be established with an MRI brain scan. Most patients respond to high-dose intravenous glucocorticoids.

Pesticide pollution remains a significant environmental challenge, necessitating the exploration of sustainable alternatives. Biosurfactants are a class of unconventional surface-active chemicals that are produced by microorganisms. Biosurfactants have many applications in treating oil spills, emulsifiers, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Compared to chemical surfactants, they have benefits such as biodegradability, less toxicity, and a greener option because they are derived from microbes. Biosurfactants have recently been shown to have the potential to speed up pesticide cleanup. Biosurfactants are used in pesticide remediation because of their exceptional foaming ability, high selectivity, and wide range of pH, salinity, and temperature operating windows. Microbial biosurfactants emerged as potential agents for the treatment of organic waste and agricultural residue. This review unfolds the promising realm of microbial biosurfactants as green solutions for environmental sustainability, particularly in agricultural practices, with special reference to pesticide remediation. This article highlights the escalating need for eco-friendly alternatives, paving the way for discussing biosurfactants. Moreover, the articles discuss in detail various advancements in the field of rapid screening of biosurfactants, either using a conventional approach or via advanced instruments such as GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, etc. Furthermore, the article unveils the molecular mechanisms and the microbial genes driving biosurfactant synthesis, offering insights into enhancing production efficiency. Moreover, the article explores diverse applications of microbial biosurfactants in sustainable agriculture, ranging from soil remediation to crop protection. The article also highlights the various functions of microbial biosurfactants for enhancing the decomposition and recycling of organic waste and agricultural residues, emphasizing their potential for sustainable waste management strategies. Overall, the review underscores the pivotal role of microbial biosurfactants as green alternatives for addressing pesticide pollution and advancing environmental sustainability.

Objective: To evaluate the various factors leading to conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open cholecystectomy. Study Design: Comparative cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Pak Emirates Military Hospital Rawalpindi, from May 2020 to Sep 2021. Methodology: This study was conducted on 200 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for any benign pathology during the study period. Data was collected for all the patients who required conversion of surgical procedure from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy. Demographic and clinical risk factors were associated with conversion of procedure in the study participants. Results: Out of 200 patients included in the final analysis 67 (33.5%) were male and 133 (66.5%) were female. Mean age of patients put who underwent laparoscopic surgery for benign gall bladder pathologies in our study was 43.46 ± 8.337 years. Gall stones were the commonest clinical condition for which laparoscopic cholecystectomy was done. Out of 26 (13%) patients underwent conversion of laparoscopic to open surgery. It was revealed that frozen Calots triangle (p-value-0.033), empyema gall bladder (p-value-0.018) and previous abdominal surgeries (p-value-0.013) were significantly related to conversion of laparoscopic to open surgery Conclusion: Conversion rate of laparoscopic to open surgery for cholecystectomy was high in our study population. Patients who had previous abdominal surgeries or presence of frozen Calots triangle and empyema gall bladder were more at risk of conversion of surgery.

Broiler diets frequently include fats and oils to improve energy density, feed palatability, and functionality associated with Ω-3 PUFA. The purpose of this research was to examine how dietary supplementation of linseed affects growth performance and lipid profile of broiler chickens. The study was carried out at the poultry farm of the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The experiment is approved by the Central Animal Ethics Committee of the University (IAEC/3036). Total 200 male Cobb-400, 7-day-old broiler chicks were randomly distributed into 5 treatment groups and fed with different levels of LS (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), respectively. The chickens fed rations supplemented with different levels of LS resulted in significantly decreased body weight and significantly increased feed conversion ratio. In blood lipid profile, CHO, TRI, LDL-C, and VLD-C concentrate levels decreased when fed with different level of LS, while HDL-C increased significantly.

Mapping and monitoring of land use land cover (LULC) changes in the Himalayas is vital for sustainable development, planning and management. Based on remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, the study is an attempt to monitor the changes in LULC patterns of Rani Khola watershed of Sikkim Himalaya for the periods 1988–1996, 1996–2008 and 2008–2017. Images from Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and Sentinel 2A (Multispectral Instrument) MSI data were used to extract land cover maps. Supervised classification using Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) was applied to prepare LULC maps of the watershed. The accuracy of the classified map was assessed using a High Resolution Planet scope image and ground realities have been verified and ascertained through field observations and site specific interviews. As a result of policy changes and traditional agroforestry systems, LULC in the study watershed has undergone a series of complicated changes over the past three decades. Six major LULC classes viz; agriculture, barren land, built-up area, dense forest, open forests and water bodies have been identified and indicate that major land use in the watershed is forestry. Results shows, dense forest, built-up area and water bodies have increased by 16.40% (41.76 km2), 2.13% (5.41 km2) and 0.11% (0.28 km2) while open forest, agriculture and barren land have decreased by −13.98% (−35.59 km2), 2.83% (−7.22 km2) and −1.82% (0.4.64 km2) respectively. The analysis and findings of the study highlights important policy implications for the sustainable LULC management in the Rani Khola watershed of the Sikkim Himalaya.

Pesticides are used indiscriminately all over the world to protect crops from pests and pathogens. If they are used in excess, they contaminate the soil and water bodies and negatively affect human health and the environment. However, bioremediation is the most viable option to deal with these pollutants, but it has certain limitations. Therefore, harnessing the role of microbial biosurfactants in pesticide remediation is a promising approach. Biosurfactants are the amphiphilic compounds that can help to increase the bioavailability of pesticides, and speeds up the bioremediation process. Biosurfactants lower the surface area and interfacial tension of immiscible fluids and boost the solubility and sorption of hydrophobic pesticide contaminants. They have the property of biodegradability, low toxicity, high selectivity, and broad action spectrum under extreme pH, temperature, and salinity conditions, as well as a low critical micelle concentration (CMC). All these factors can augment the process of pesticide remediation. Application of metagenomic and in-silico tools would help by rapidly characterizing pesticide degrading microorganisms at a taxonomic and functional level. A comprehensive review of the literature shows that the role of biosurfactants in the biological remediation of pesticides has received limited attention. Therefore, this article is intended to provide a detailed overview of the role of various biosurfactants in improving pesticide remediation as well as different methods used for the detection of microbial biosurfactants. Additionally, this article covers the role of advanced metagenomics tools in characterizing the biosurfactant producing pesticide degrading microbes from different environments.

Prolonged shade during the reproductive stage can result in significant yield losses in rice. For this study, we elucidated the role of microRNAs in prolonged-shade tolerance (~20 days of shade) in a shade-tolerant rice variety, Swarnaprabha (SP), in its reproductive stage using small RNA and degradome sequencing with expression analysis using microarray and qRT-PCR. This study demonstrates that miRNA (miR) regulation for shade-tolerance predominately comprises the deactivation of the miR itself, leading to the upregulation of their targets. Up- and downregulated differentially expressed miRs (DEms) presented drastic differences in the category of targets based on the function and pathway in which they are involved. Moreover, neutrally regulated and uniquely expressed miRs also contributed to the shade-tolerance response by altering the differential expression of their targets, probably due to their differential binding affinities. The upregulated DEms mostly targeted the cell wall, membrane, cytoskeleton, and cellulose synthesis-related transcripts, and the downregulated DEms targeted the transcripts of photosynthesis, carbon and sugar metabolism, energy metabolism, and amino acid and protein metabolism. We identified 16 miRNAs with 21 target pairs, whose actions may significantly contribute to the shade-tolerance phenotype and sustainable yield of SP. The most notable among these were found to be miR5493-OsSLAC and miR5144-OsLOG1 for enhanced panicle size, miR5493-OsBRITTLE1-1 for grain formation, miR6245-OsCsIF9 for decreased stem mechanical strength, miR5487-OsGns9 and miR168b-OsCP1 for better pollen development, and miR172b-OsbHLH153 for hyponasty under shade.

Studies on the assessment of land degradation, overland flow, soil loss, and nutrient loss have emerged as paramount importance for food security and rural livelihood in the mountains. The present study dealt with similar issues in the Eastern Himalayas, for which the primary data were collected from the field during 2017–18. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data on soil erosion and information on overland flow, soil loss, and nutrient loss was assessed through field experiments in the watershed of Sikkim, Eastern Himalayas. The first section of the methodology deals with the experimental analysis from different land use categories to quantify soil loss. In the second section, detailed qualitative analyses of farmers’ perceptions of soil erosion indicators were recorded through field surveys, i.e., key informant interviews (KEIs) and focus group discussions (FDGs). The results showed that the highest overland flow was in barren land (8.63%) followed by large cardamom-based agroforestry system (7.02%), and mixed cropping (4.84%), and the lowest overland flow was in terrace cultivation (4.69%). Soil loss was estimated to be the highest for barren land (7.73 Mg/ha/year (megagram/hectare/year)) followed by mixed cropping (4.32 Mg/ha/year), and terrace cultivation (3.75 Mg/ha/year), with the least soil loss estimated to be in cardamom-based agroforestry (3.23 Mg/ha/year). Loss of nitrogen (N) (4.49 kg/ha/year) and phosphorous (P) (2.43 kg/ha/year) were highest in barren land, while potassium (K) loss was highest (4.30 kg/ha/year) in mixed farming. The lowest N loss rate (3.34 kg/ha/year) was in terrace cultivation, the lowest P loss rate (8.19 kg/ha/year) was in mixed farming, and the lowest potassium loss rate (3.28 kg/ha/year) was in cardamom-based agroforestry. Approximately 33% of the farmers acknowledged light or no soil losses, while 17% of the farmers accepted moderate soil erosion. The results of field survey indicated that only 15–19% of the farmers reported high or extreme soil loss in the fields. Farmers in the watershed are practicing multiple measures to control land degradation; however, marginal farmers are still vulnerable and need strong support from the government to safeguard their land.

After four decades of anti-intrusion policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) against the English language, the time has come to evaluate their success rates and to study the status of this language in Iran. This study has thus investigated the status of the English language in Iran on two levels: one concerning the state’s policies and another, the people’s attitudes. To do so, we carried out research on the content of education documents of the IRI and the English language teaching textbooks employed in the education system. To locate the society’s stance on the English language, we administered a survey study on 472 participants randomly sampled from undergraduate students from four state universities. We concluded that there is an evident gap between the approach of the Islamic government and the people’s approach toward English language in the current Iranian society.

ABSTRACT: Objective: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a sporadic form of hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) that is most commonly seen in patients with Graves disease (GD) in association with acute thyrotoxicosis. A very few cases of HPP have been reported in patients with GD while the patient was euthyroid.Methods: We describe a case of a 62-year-old Caucasian male with a history of GD, who presented with acute progressive bilateral lower extremity weakness.Results: The patient was found to have severe hypokalemia, with no evidence of diarrhea or increased urinary potassium excretion. He was diagnosed as having HPP. He remained clinically and biochemically euthyroid during the admission. There was no history of high-carbohydrate meal intake, intense exercise, recent steroid exposure, or unusual stress. His symptoms improved gradually over the next 3 to 4 days with potassium supplementation. Nine months later, he progressed to overt hyperthyroidism and was treated with 25 mCi of iodine-131 and following that he has been on levothyroxine replacement for post-ablative hypothyroidism. Other unusual features in this patient were hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, and vitamin D deficiency during the acute presentation. Serum calcium and magnesium normalized 2 days after admission, while serum vitamin D continued to be low. Introduction: Patients with dementia often have other associated medical co-morbidities resulting in adverse outcomes. The National Audit of Dementia (NAD) in the UK showed a wide variation in the quality and clinical care for acute dementia patients. This study aims to record the clinical profile and benchmark clinical outcomes of acute dementia patients admitted within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Wales (UK). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study based on analysis of the existing data for all acute dementia patients. Ethical approval was not required for this service evaluation. Results: In 2016, a total of 1770 dementia patients had 2474 acute admissions. We studied 1167 acute admissions (953 dementia patients) from 1st January 2016–30th June 2016. The mean age was 84.5 ± 7.8 years (females = 63.5%). Mean Charlson comorbidity index and the number of drugs were 6.0 ± 1.5 and 5.1 ± 2.1. 15.4% (147/953) patients were on antipsychotics. Overall mean hospital stay was 19.4 ± 27.2 days. 30-days readmission rate was 17.2% (138/800) with a mean hospital stay of 14.6 ± 17.9 days. 3.4% (32/953) patients were excluded due to a coding error. 70.3% (n = 670/953) were previously living in their own homes and only 26.3% (n = 251/953) were admitted from care homes. 59.5% patients (n = 399/670) were discharged back to their homes and 21.6% (145/670) were discharged to a new care home, which represents an approximately 1.68 times higher rate of new care home occupancy than the patients being originally admitted from a care home. Overall inpatient was 16.0% (153/953). 30-days and one-year mortality were 22.3% (213/953) and 49.2% (469/953) respectively. The observed mortality rates between patients admitted from home or from a care home were highly significant for one-year mortality (p < 0.001). The inpatient falls rate was significantly higher (1.8 times) as compared to overall general medical inpatient falls rate. Conclusion: Acute patients with dementia have a higher risk of adverse outcomes and the impact of hospitalisation. Prompt comprehensive geriatric assessment and quality improvement initiatives are needed to improve clinical outcomes and to enhance the quality of care.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of various complications following routine exodontia performed using fixed protocols. Materials and Methods: A total of 22,330 extractions carried out in 14,975 patients, aged between 14 and 82 years, who reported to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College and Hospital, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, were evaluated for various complications. Results: The most common complications encountered were tooth fracture, trismus, fracture of cortical plates and dry socket. Wound dehiscence, postoperative pain and hemorrhage were encountered less frequently. Luxation of adjacent teeth, fracture of maxillary tuberosity, and displacement of tooth into adjacent tissue spaces were rare complications. Conclusion: The practice of exodontia inevitably results in complications from time to time. It is imperative for the clinician to recognize impending complications and manage them accordingly.

We describe our automatic generative algorithm to create street addresses from satellite images by learning and labeling roads, regions, and address cells. Currently, 75% of the world’s roads lack adequate street addressing systems. Recent geocoding initiatives tend to convert pure latitude and longitude information into a memorable form for unknown areas. However, settlements are identified by streets, and such addressing schemes are not coherent with the road topology. Instead, we propose a generative address design that maps the globe in accordance with streets. Our algorithm starts with extracting roads from satellite imagery by utilizing deep learning. Then, it uniquely labels the regions, roads, and structures using some graph- and proximity-based algorithms. We also extend our addressing scheme to (i) cover inaccessible areas following similar design principles; (ii) be inclusive and flexible for changes on the ground; and (iii) lead as a pioneer for a unified street-based global geodatabase. We present our results on an example of a developed city and multiple undeveloped cities. We also compare productivity on the basis of current ad hoc and new complete addresses. We conclude by contrasting our generative addresses to current industrial and open solutions.

Advances in automation and data science have led agriculturists to seek real-time, high-quality, high-volume crop data to accelerate crop improvement through breeding and to optimize agronomic practices. Breeders have recently gained massive data-collection capability in genome sequencing of plants. Faster phenotypic trait data collection and analysis relative to genetic data leads to faster and better selections in crop improvement. Furthermore, faster and higher-resolution crop data collection leads to greater capability for scientists and growers to improve precision-agriculture practices on increasingly larger farms; e.g., site-specific application of water and nutrients. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently gained traction as agricultural data collection systems. Using UAVs for agricultural remote sensing is an innovative technology that differs from traditional remote sensing in more ways than strictly higher-resolution images; it provides many new and unique possibilities, as well as new and unique challenges. Herein we report on processes and lessons learned from year 1-the summer 2015 and winter 2016 growing seasons-of a large multidisciplinary project evaluating UAV images across a range of breeding and agronomic research trials on a large research farm. Included are team and project planning, UAV and sensor selection and integration, and data collection and analysis workflow. The study involved many crops and both breeding plots and agronomic fields. The project's goal was to develop methods for UAVs to collect high-quality, high-volume crop data with fast turnaround time to field scientists. The project included five teams: Administration, Flight Operations, Sensors, Data Management, and Field Research. Four case studies involving multiple crops in breeding and agronomic applications add practical descriptive detail. Lessons learned include critical information on sensors, air vehicles, and configuration parameters for both. As the first and most comprehensive project of its kind to date, these lessons are particularly salient to researchers embarking on agricultural research with UAVs.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis. The current gold standard for GBM treatment, known as the Stupp protocol, includes maximal safe surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and temozolomide chemotherapy. Despite extending survival modestly, this regimen is associated with significant side effects and limited efficacy, resulting in a median survival (MS) of 15 months and a 5-year survival rate of only 7%. A major challenge in GBM treatment is the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which restricts the penetration of therapeutic agents into the brain, thereby limiting the effectiveness of systemic therapies. To address these limitations, this systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of injectable local drug delivery systems (DDS) compared to systemic DDS in murine GBM models. This study aimed to provide robust evidence supporting the potential benefits of injectable local DDS for GBM treatment., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and ScienceDirect databases. The studies included were original research on local DDS of anticancer agents compared to systemic DDS in orthotopic GBM tumor models. The data extraction process included information on survival rates, tumor growth, and other relevant outcomes. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4, employing a random-effects model to calculate the pooled mean difference (MD) in survival time between local and systemic DDS., Results: Out of 1341 records, six studies met the inclusion criteria, totaling 129 murine models. The meta-analysis revealed that local injection of DDS significantly improved the MS compared to systemic administration (MD = 2.76; 95% confidence interval, 0.43-5.09; P = 0.03; I 2 = 93%). The local injection of the DDS bypassed the BBB, achieving higher local drug concentrations and sustained release at the tumor site, leading to enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduced systemic toxicity., Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis provide compelling evidence that local injection of DDS significantly improves survival in GBM models compared with systemic therapies. These findings highlight the potential of local DDS to overcome the challenges posed by the BBB and deliver higher concentrations of therapeutic agents directly to the tumor site. However, further research is needed to validate these findings in human clinical trials and refine DDS formulations. Future research should focus on developing DDS formulations capable of delivering multiple therapeutic agents simultaneously, addressing the experimental variability in preclinical models, and conducting rigorous clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of local DDS in human patients. Lumbar intrathecal administration provides an ideal route for drug delivery into the central nervous system, especially when dorsal root ganglions are the main target for the therapy in rat model of chronic pain. Two main methods of lumbar intrathecal administrations are chronic catheter implantation and the acute needle puncture. Chronic catheter implantation involves surgical manipulation to insert micro indwelling catheter into the intrathecal space. However, this method is invasive, produces inflammatory reactions, and generates more surgical stress. Acute needle puncture is less invasive and cheaper however is technically challenging to perform. We performed an ultrasound-guided lumbar intrathecal injection in six male Sprague Dawley rat cadavers, on average weighing 250-300 grams. Fresh rat cadavers were positioned in a sternal recumbent position, vertebrae were palpated and scanned using a linear probe ultrasound. A 25G needle insertion was advanced with real-time ultrasound guidance, and placement was confirmed prior to dye injection (Methylene blue, Sigma Aldrich). Cadavers were then dissected, and the vertebrae were visually inspected for dye staining. All three cadavers that underwent intrathecal injection with sagittal and axial plane ultrasound guidance showed positive dye staining within the intrathecal space, confirming successful acute intrathecal administration. There was one successful intrathecal injection under sagittal plane-only ultrasound guidance. Stroke is the world's second-leading cause of death. Current treatments for cerebral edema following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) mainly involve hyperosmolar fluids, but this approach is often inadequate. Propolis, known for its various beneficial properties, especially antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, could potentially act as an adjunctive therapy and help alleviate stroke-associated injuries. The chemical composition of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract was analyzed by GC-MS after derivatization for its total phenolic and total flavonoid content. The total phenolic content and total flavonoid content of the propolis extract were 1037.31 ± 24.10 μg GAE/mL and 374.02 ± 3.36 μg QE/mL, respectively. By GC-MS analysis, its major constituents were found to be triterpenoids (22.4% of TIC). Minor compounds, such as phenolic lipids (6.7% of TIC, GC-MS) and diterpenic acids (2.3% of TIC, GC-MS), were also found. Ninety-six Sprague Dawley rats were divided into six groups; namely, the control group, the ICH group, and four ICH groups that received the following therapies: mannitol, propolis extract (daily oral propolis administration after the ICH induction), propolis-M (propolis and mannitol), and propolis-B+A (daily oral propolis administration 7 days prior to and 72 h after the ICH induction). Neurocognitive functions of the rats were analyzed using the rotarod challenge and Morris water maze. In addition, the expression of NF-κB, SUR1-TRPM4, MMP-9, and Aquaporin-4 was analyzed using immunohistochemical methods. A TUNEL assay was used to assess the percentage of apoptotic cells. Mannitol significantly improved cognitive-motor functions in the ICH group, evidenced by improved rotarod and Morris water maze completion times, and lowered SUR-1 and Aquaporin-4 levels. It also significantly decreased cerebral edema by day 3. Similarly, propolis treatments (propolis-A and propolis-B+A) showed comparable improvements in these tests and reduced edema. Moreover, combining propolis with mannitol (propolis-M) further enhanced these effects, particularly in reducing edema and the Virchow-Robin space. These findings highlight the potential of propolis from the Indonesian stingless bee, Geniotrigona thoracica , from the Central Tapanuli region as a neuroprotective, adjunctive therapy.

Tuberculum sellae meningioma (TSM) is a challenging tumor that grows close to several crucial structures, such as the optic nerve, arteries, and pituitary. Surgical treatment is currently evolving from a transcranial microsurgical resection to a transsphenoidal approach. This study examined the clinical profile of patients with tuberculum sellae meningioma and explored its relationship with scoring systems. This retrospective observational study included patients with TSM who underwent surgery at the Department of Neurosurgery at our hospital between 2017 and 2022. The patients were excluded if their data required completion. The clinical profiles of the patients were counted and transformed into a scoring system using several variables such as size, vascular, and canal invasion. We then analyzed the relationship between the clinical signs and symptoms to determine the efficacy of this scoring system. Thirty-six patients were included in the study. Most of our patients had a high score for tumor diameter, bilateral canal invasion, and vascular invasion (2-2-2). Moreover, when related to clinical signs, there was no relationship between the canal and vascular invasion and decreased visual acuity. Tuberculum sellae meningioma mostly causes visual impairment and several other symptoms, such as hemianopsia and parasellar extension. Several factors in the scoring system should also be considered to predict outcomes, such as the onset of visual symptoms, peritumoral edema, and grade of excision.

Background and Purpose: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is the most common type of tumor found in the cerebellopontine angle that accounts for 8% of all intracranial tumors. VS management is currently a challenge due to the unpredictable nature of the tumor. Few studies have compared the results and complications of various therapeutic approaches to VS. Therefore, as a treatment option for VSs smaller than 25 mm, we conducted a systematic review to compare Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) with conventional surgery., Methods: Literature searches were conducted of four online databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, and ScienceDirect) using the following keyword search: ("vestibular schwannoma" OR "acoustic neuroma") AND ("gamma knife" OR "gamma knife radiosurgery") AND ("resection" OR "open surgery") AND ("hearing preservation" OR "facial nerve" OR "tumor growth")., Results: We identified six retrospective cohort studies, five of which were of fair-to-good quality. All studies showed that GKRS was superior to surgery in hearing preservation. Indonesia is a rapidly growing lower-middle-income country (LMIC) located in Southeast Asia. It has 267.3 million inhabitants, with 31.6% (84.4 million) children. According to GLOBOCAN 2020, Indonesia had the highest prevalence of pediatric cancer cases in Southeast Asia (43.5%), and brain tumors had the third-highest incidence in Indonesia. Treating children with brain tumors with radiotherapy is challenging, especially the late treatment effects that can affect their quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to show the QoL in children with brain tumors after radiotherapy in Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia, based on PedsQL™ 4.0 generic core scale and the possible affecting factors. In this cross-sectional study, 26 of 88 children with brain tumors after radiotherapy were assessed by the PedsQL™ 4.0 generic core scale. Of the 88 patients who had brain tumor radiotherapy in 2014-2019, 31 patients were lost to follow-up, 28 were confirmed dead, and 29 were assured alive. One-year, three-year, and five-year overall survival were 71.6%, 43.2%, and 5.7%, respectively. The mean of children's QoL was 70.686 and 70.152 based on child self-report and parent proxy-report. Family income > 290 USD (regional minimum wage) was a factor that improved the QoL in children with brain tumors after radiotherapy (p = 0.008). QoL in children with brain tumors after radiotherapy could be influenced by family income.

Background: During the Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, medical residents were deployed to help with managing patients in a wide range of settings. Unlike other COVID-19-related topics, the psychological impact of the pandemic on medical residents has received little attention., Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical residents' well-being, depression, and stress levels., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A total of 597 medical residents were identified and with the aim of a sample size of 300 participants; 242 responses were collected during the period between November 2020 to February 2021. Data were collected through an online survey utilizing Patient Health Questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale. SPSS software was used for data analysis., Results: Most of the residents in our study were females (73.6%) and single (60.7%). Around 66.5% were depressed, 87.2% were under low-moderate stress, and 12.8% were under high stress. Majority (73.5%) of the single residents were depressed ( P = 0.016). Being male has been found to lower the risk of developing depression ( P = 0.042). The need to relocate for family protection increased the risk of developing depression ( P = 0.022).Residents who were living with their friends/roommates were found to be under a high level of stress ( P = 0.001). Surgical specialties' residents were found to be the most under high stress ( P = 0.044)., Conclusion: Female gender, single status, and changing housing were risk factors for depression. Purpose: This systematic review aimed to identify the role of Ki-67 as a prognostic factor in estimating tumor grade and the radiation response in meningiomas., Methods: A systematic search of the literature on meningiomas was carried out through the PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCOhost databases according to the PRISMA guidelines., Results: Our search resulted in 465 collected articles, 15 of which satisfied the eligibility criteria. Twelve studies reported the correlation between Ki-67 and meningioma grade. Two other investigations reported the relationship between Ki-67 and the radiation response in meningioma, and one failed to capture the association between Ki-67 and the radiation response in meningioma., Conclusion: The Ki-67 proliferation index has a uniform correlation with meningioma grade. Two of the 3 studies on the correlation of Ki-67 with the radiation response in meningioma patients reported that patients with a higher Ki-67 responded better to radiation therapy.

The present study is aimed at the synthesis and exploring the efficiency of a novel activated carbon incorporated polyindole (AC@PIN) composite for adsorptive removal of Malachite Green (MG) dye from aqueous solution. An AC@PIN hybrid material was prepared by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The physico-chemical characteristics of the AC@PIN composite were assessed using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, and determination of point of zero charge (pH PZC ). A series of adsorption studies was conducted to evaluate the influence of operational parameters such as pH, contact time, initial dye concentration, AC@PIN dosage, and temperature on dye adsorption behavior of developed composite. A maximum dye removal percentage (97.3%) was achieved at the pH = 10, AC@PIN dosage = 6.0 mg, initial dye concentration 150 mg L -1 , and temperature = 20 °C. The kinetic studies demonstrated that the adsorption of MG on AC@PIN followed pseudo-second-order model (R 2 ≥ 0.99). Meanwhile, Langmuir isotherm model was founded to be the best isotherm model to describe the adsorption process. Finally, the recyclability test revealed that the composite exhibits good recycle efficiency and is stable after 5 cycles. The obtained results suggest that AC@PIN composite could be a potential candidate for the removal of MG from wastewater.

Partially biodegradable polymer nanocomposites Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/MultiwalledCarbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) (PMMA)and non-biodegradable nanocomposites (MWCNTs/PMMA) were synthesized, and their thermal, electrical, and ammonia-sensing properties were compared. MWCNTs were chemically modified to ensure effective dispersion in the polymeric matrix. Pristine MWCNTs (p-MWCNTs) were functionalized with -COOH (a-MWCNTs) and amine groups (f-MWCNTs). Then, PHB grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (g-MWNTs) were prepared by a 'grafting to' technique. The p-MWCNTs, a-MWCNTs, f-MWCNTs, and g-MWCNTs were incorporated into the PMMA matrix and PMMA/PHB blend system by solution mixing. The PHB/f-MWCNTs/PMMA blend system showed good thermal properties among all synthesized nanocomposites. Results from TGA and dTGA analysis for PHB/f-MWCNTs/PMMA showed delay in T 5 (about 127 °C), T 50 (up to 126 °C), and T max (up to 65 °C) as compared to neat PMMA. Higher values of frequency capacitance were observed in nanocomposites containing f-MWCNTs and g-MWCNTs as compared to nanocomposites containing p-MWCNTs and a-MWCNTs. This may be attributed to their excellent interaction and good dispersion in the polymeric blend. Analysis of ammonia gas-sensing data showed that PHB/g-MWCNTs/PMMA nanocomposites exhibited good sensitivity (≈100%) and excellent repeatability with a constant response. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) is 0.129 ppm for PHB/g-MWCNTs/PMMA, while that of all other nanocomposites is above 40 ppm.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of c-Met overexpression with survival of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients., Methods: A systematic review with meta-analyses was conducted on related articles from PubMed, EBSCOhost, Scopus, and Cochrane databases with last updated search on October 31, 2020. A total of 7 studies regarding c-Met overexpression and overall survival (OS) and/or progression free survival (PFS) are included in this study., Results: All studies used immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of c-Met protein. The results showed that the positive rate of c-Met overexpression was detected in approximately 33,9% - 60,5% of GBM patients. c-Met overexpression was related to worse OS (HR: 1,74; 95% CI: 1,482-2,043; Z=6,756; p<0,001) and PFS (HR: 1,66; 95% CI: 1,327-2,066; Z=4,464; p<0,001) in GBM patients. Low heterogeneity of subjects was found in both OS and PFS analyses, I2 values were 7,8% and 0,0%, respectively., Conclusion: In conclusion, c-Met overexpression is significantly related to shorter OS and PFS in GBM patients, so c-Met can be considered as a potential prognostic indicator in GBM.

This is a case of 42nd year-old woman with history of sight loss in her both eyes. She experienced headache and visual field decrease gradually since 2014. After several laboratory and imaging examinations, from her dynamic pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is concluded that she had a giant adenoma of the pituitary gland which compressed to her optic chiasm. From her pituitary laboratory hormone panel, it is revealed that the tumor is a non-functioning pituitary adenoma. From the neuro-ophthalmology (campimetry) examinations, she had papillae atrophy in her both eyes and also bilateral temporal hemianopia.

Purpose: In 2016, there were 1,308,061 cases of cancer being treated in Indonesia, with 2.2 trillion rupiahs spent, amounting to $486,960,633 in US dollars (purchasing power parity 2016). The high burden of cancers in Indonesia requires a valid data collection to inform future cancer-related policies. The purpose of this study is to report cancer epidemiological data from 2008 to 2012 based on Hospital-Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) data from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Indonesia., Methods: This was a descriptive study with cross-sectional design. Data were collected from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital HBCR 2008-2012. Demographical, diagnostic, stages of cancer, and histopathological types of cancer data were extracted., Results: After screening, 18,216 cases were included. A total of 12,438 patients were older than 39 years of age (68.3%), with a female-to-male ratio of 9:5. Most patients have cancers at advanced stages (stages III and IV, 10.2%). The most common sites of cancer were cervix uteri (2,878 cases, 15.8%), breast (2,459 cases, 13.5%), hematopoietic and reticuloendothelial systems (1,422 cases, 7.8%), nasopharynx (1,338 cases, 7.4%), and lymph nodes (1,104 cases, 6.1%)., Conclusion: From this HBCR, cancer incidence in female was almost twice the incidence in male, largely because of the burden of cervical and breast cancers. The cervix uteri as one of the top five cancer sites based on this HBCR, 2008-2012, are still approximately consistent with Global Cancer Incidence, Mortality and Prevalence 2018, which portrayed that Indonesia has been severely afflicted by cervical cancer cases more than any other Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries. The HBCR could serve as a robust database of epidemiological data for cancer cases in Indonesia.

Objective: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become an important outcome for neurosurgical patients underwent surgery. The authors utilized the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ C-30) to assess the quality of life of spheno-orbital meningiomas patients after surgery in one national central referral hospital in Indonesia., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical record-based data of 40 spheno-orbital meningioma patients who underwent surgery at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia from October-December 2016 were analyzed. Differences between pre-and postsurgical EORTC scores was examined using the Student's t test., Results: There was a statistically significant increase of EORTC QLQ-C30 scores in global health status, role functioning, emotional functioning, cognitive functioning, and social functioning variables, and statistically significant decrease for clinical symptoms variables., Conclusion: Evidently, there was improvement in HRQoL in spheno-orbital meningiomas patients after surgery, in whom EORTC QLQ-C30 can be used to assess the HRQoL prior to and after surgical procedures.

Background: Intestinal parasitic infection is one of the major health problems globally. It is more common in developing countries including Ethiopia. So, adequate evidence is needed regarding the predictors of intestinal parasitic infection. This study was aimed at determining the predictors of intestinal parasitic infection among food handlers working in Madda Walabu University, Ethiopia., Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 15 May to 10 June 2017 among 198 symptom-free food handlers. Data on sociodemographic variables were collected through face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. Stool samples were collected immediately after the interview using labeled wide-mouthed plastic container and clean wooden applicator. Direct wet-mount method and formal-ether concentration techniques were performed to identify intestinal parasites. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0. Descriptive statistics and crude and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. p value of <0.05 was considered to declaration level of significance., Result: The response rate was 98% (198/202). The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 25.3% (50/198). The top three intestinal parasites found in this study were Ascaris lumbricoides 7.6% (15/198), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar 7.6% (15/198), and hookworm 5.6% (11/198). Inadequate handwashing practice (AOR: 13.876; 95% CI: 4.129, 46.632), inadequate knowledge about foodborne diseases (AOR: 3.596; 95% CI: 1.438, 8.989), lack of training on proper food handling (AOR: 5.960; 95% CI: 1.450, 24.497), and untrimmed fingernail (AOR: 2.939; 95% CI: 1.368, 6.135) were independent predictors of intestinal parasitic infection., Conclusion: High prevalence of intestinal parasites was observed among symptom-free food handlers who could be unobservable source of disease transmission. Inadequate handwashing, untrimmed fingernail, inadequate knowledge, and lack of training were independent predictors of intestinal parasitic infection in this study. Treatment failure is a key challenge in the management of HIV-1 infection. We conducted a mixed-model survey of plasma nevirapine (NVP) concentrations (cNVP) and viral load in order to examine associations with treatment and adherence outcomes among Kenyan patients on prolonged antiretroviral therapy (ART). Blood plasma was collected at 1, 4 and 24 hours post-ART dosing from 58 subjects receiving NVP-containing ART and used to determine cNVP and viral load (VL). Median duration of treatment was 42 (range, 12-156) months, and 25 (43.1%) of the patients had virologic failure (VF). cNVP was significantly lower for VF than non- VF at 1hr (mean, 2,111ng/ml vs. 3,432ng/ml, p = 0.003) and at 4hr (mean 1,625ng/ml vs. 3,999ng/ml, p = 0.001) but not at 24hr post-ART dosing. Up to 53.4%, 24.1% and 22.4% of the subjects had good, fair and poor adherence respectively. cNVP levels peaked and were > = 3μg.ml at 4 hours in a majority of patients with good adherence and those without VF. Using a threshold of 3μg/ml for optimal therapeutic nevirapine level, 74% (43/58), 65.5% (38/58) and 86% (50/58) of all patients had sub-therapeutic cNVP at 1, 4 and 24 hours respectively. cNVP at 4 hours was associated with adherence (p = 0.05) and virologic VF (p = 0.002) in a chi-square test. These mean cNVP levels differed significantly in non-parametric tests between adherence categories at 1hr (p = 0.005) and 4hrs (p = 0.01) and between ART regimen categories at 1hr (p = 0.004) and 4hrs (p<0.0001). Moreover, cNVP levels correlated inversely with VL (p< = 0.006) and positively with adherence behavior. In multivariate tests, increased early peak NVP (cNVP4) was independently predictive of lower VL (p = 0.002), while delayed high NVP peak (cNVP24) was consistent with increased VL (p = 0.033). These data strongly assert the need to integrate plasma concentrations of NVP and that of other ART drugs into routine ART management of HIV-1 patients.

Understanding the genetic structure and transmission dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in malaria-endemic regions is crucial before the implementation of interventions. Located in a high-transmission region of western Kenya where P. falciparum is the predominant species, the Lake Victoria islands are ideal for feasibility of malaria elimination studies. We analyzed genetic variation in eight microsatellite loci to examine parasite population structure and gene flow patterns across five sites. High levels of genetic diversity were measured throughout the region (mean heterozygosity index = 0.84). The overall fixation index value between the sites was 0.044, indicating that approximately 5% of the overall allelic variation is due to differences between the populations. Based on these results, we concluded that parasite population structure in the studied islands is shaped by human migration patterns that maintain extensive parasite gene flow between the sites. Plasmodium merozoites attach to and invade red blood cells (RBCs) during the erythrocytic cycle. The invasion process requires recognition of RBC surface receptors by proteins of the Plasmodium Duffy binding like erythrocyte binding like (DBL-EBP) family. Clones and isolates of Plasmodium falciparum have varying abilities to utilize different RBC receptors, and multiple distinct pathways so far identified depend on glycophorins A, B, C, and as yet unidentified receptors. At present, five members of the DBL-EBP family have been identified in the P. falciparum genome, based on gene structure and amino acid sequence homology. The cardinal features of this family consist of conserved 5' and 3' cysteine-rich regions (regions II and VI, respectively) whose cysteine residues are highly conserved along with the majority of aromatic amino acids. In contrast to the single DBL-EBP family member in Plasmodium vivax, in P. falciparum all DBL-EBP family members have a duplication of the conserved 5' cysteine-rich region denoted as the F1 and F2 domains. These cysteine-rich regions are considered crucial in recognition of erythrocyte receptors and it has been shown that several bind to glycophorins on the erythrocyte surface. Several studies, on both field isolates and laboratory strains have uncovered a relatively high degree of sequence polymorphism in the DBP-EBL genes. This study is now extended to include field isolates collected from sites within Kenya. DNA isolated from blood samples of infected patients was utilized to amplify the region I sequence of ebl-1 gene in order to investigate polymorphism in the region immediately adjacent to the 5' cysteine-rich domains, and to determine the prevalence of an insertion mutant that effectively knocks out the gene., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier B.V. Schistosomes are parasitic blood flukes that reside in human mesenteric veins or urinary bladder veins, depending on species of the parasite. The syncytial tegument of these parasites represents a dynamic interface that regulates nutritional and immunological interactions between the parasite and the host. It is known that the components for biogenesis and maintenance of the tegument are supplied via vesicles from the nucleated cell bodies beneath the syncytium and muscle layer. To investigate the common motor components of vesicular transport in the tegument of schistomes, we extracted Schistosoma mansoni tegumental microtubule associated proteins utilizing detergent/high-salt procedure and raised antiserum against these proteins. The antiserum was applied to screen Schistosoma haematobium lambda gt11 expression library and some of the isolated clones were sequenced. Blast search for the sequences against NCBI database identified clones that are dynein light chains and myosin genes. Further analysis of schistosome dynein genes in the databases identified three families of dynein light chains (Dlcs). The Tctex family protein sequences are significantly different from the mammalian homologs and, therefore, offer a potential vaccine/drug target against schistosomes.

While in medium containing glucose, schistosomes exhibit homolactic fermentation. Accumulation of lactate acid in tissue fluid causes lowering of pH and a resultant inhibition of metabolic pathways. This requires lactate transporter protein in homolactic fermentors to facilitate the translocation of lactate(-) and [H(+)] across their plasma membrane. The ex-vivo experiment assessed lactic acid secretion by adult worms in absence and the presence of lactic acid transporter protein inhibitors. Phloretin and alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamate caused a combined 25-35% inhibition of lactic acid secretion and probenecid increased this inhibition to 65% of control values. The removal of inhibitors resulted in 80% recovery of lactic acid secretion. In the in-vitro studies using vesicles isolated from adult worms and from schistosomula, the effects of phloretin and alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamate were greater, each causing approximately 80% inhibition independently. The data obtained in this study demonstrate the presence of lactic acid transporters or similar proteins in Schistosoma mansoni.

This paper reports the variation in five blood proteins from five populations of sheep found in Kenya. Blood samples were collected from a total of 309 adult sheep of both sexes in Kwale, Makueni and Kakamega districts for the fat-tailed sheep and in Isiolo district for the fat-rumped hair sheep. Fine-wooled Merino sheep were used in this study as the reference population. Transferrin, esterase-A and esterase-C were polymorphic in all the populations investigated, while albumin was monomorphic for the S allele in the fat-tailed sheep and haemoglobin was fixed for the B allele in the Kwale, Makueni and Isiolo populations. Phylogenies derived from the pairwise genetic distance estimates showed a clear separation between the indigenous sheep populations and the exotic Merino. However, the topology of the former showed rather poor consistency with their morphological classification based on the localization of their fat deposits, namely fat-tailed or fat-rumped hair sheep.

Twenty-six captive individuals of the ellipsiprymnus subspecies group of Kobus ellipsiprymnus were found to have chromosomal complements of 2n = 50-52 (FN = 61-62), and 26 of the defassa subspecies group, including three specimens from Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, had complements of 2n = 53-54 (FN = 62). G-banded karyotypes that were numbered according to the standard karyotype of Bos taurus revealed that variation in diploid number was the result of polymorphism for two independent centric (Robertsonian) fusions. The ellipsiprymnus group was polymorphic for a 7;11 centric fusion. Both elements of chromosome pairs 7 and 11 were fused in fusion homozygotes (2n = 50); in fusion heterozygotes (2n = 51), only one element of each pair was fused. The 7;11 fusion was lacking in specimens with 2n = 52. The defassa group was polymorphic for a 6;18 centric fusion; individuals were either heterozygous for the fusion (2n = 53) or lacking it (2n = 54). There were no defassa group individuals that were homozygous for the 6;18 fusion (2n = 52), but this may be a sampling artifact. The 6;18 fusion was fixed in the ellipsiprymnus group, whereas the 7;11 fusion was absent in the defassa group. In G- and C-banded karyotypes, all autosomal arms and the X chromosomes of the two subspecies groups appeared to be completely homologous. However, the Y chromosome was acrocentric in the ellipsiprymnus group and submetacentric in the defassa group, possibly the result of a pericentric inversion. Fixed chromosomal differences between the two subspecies groups reflect a period of supposed geographic isolation during which time they diverged genetically and phenotypically, and the centric fusion polymorphisms raise the possibility of reduced fertility in hybrids. These data, in conjunction with phenotypic and mitochondrial DNA data, suggest to us that populations of the ellipsiprymnus and defassa groups should be managed separately.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences from six Kenyan Grant's gazelle (Gazella granti) populations were highly divergent among locations. Neighbouring populations not separated by geographical or vegetational barriers exhibited and nucleotide sequence divergence about 14 per cent. A similar level of divergence separates Grant's gazelles from a closely related species, the Soemmering's gazelle (G. soemmeringii). Nuclear microsatellite repeat number variation at two loci also indicated substantial population genetic differentiation. Despite high levels of sequence divergence populations of Grant's gazelles were more closely related to each other than to Soemmering's and Thompson's gazelles (G. thomsoni) as measured by nucleotide sequence divergence at the mtDNA protein coding cytochrome b gene and the nuclear alpha-lactalbumin gene. This pattern of extensive differentiation is hypothesized to have resulted from recently established contacts between formerly allopatric populations.

Immunologic screening of a Schistosoma haematobium cDNA library with species-specific human antisera identified a clone whose predicted amino acid sequence encodes a member of the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) gene family. This cDNA consists of 1397 bp with a single open reading frame that can encode a 409-amino acid protein of 46,261 Da. The native antigen is a 54-58-kDa glycoprotein and is located on the surface of adult worms. Sequence comparison with other serpins predicts the amino acid Phe at the putative reactive center of the protein. Phenylalanine is also found at the corresponding site of a vaccinia serpin that may contribute to the hemorrhagic phenotype of some strains of cowpox virus. Though the human parasites S. haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni demonstrate a close antigenic relationship, the S. haematobium serpin gene product demonstrates marked species-specific immunogenicity. By Northern blot hybridization, however, both species express a 1700-nucleotide mRNA that hybridizes with the S. haematobium serpin cDNA. The intensity of cross hybridization for the S. mansoni mRNA is 10-fold lower than that for S. haematobium. Southern blots of genomic DNA and gene titration experiments indicate that the S. haematobium gene is present in approximately 4-5 copies per haploid genome.
