Abstract

The need to apply modern signal processing and analysis techniques to enhance the performance of process instrumentation systems has been identified as one of the priority areas for research and development in process instrumentation and process control. This enhancement of performance can be in the form of extracting additional information from flow sensors beyond the customary requirements of the basic process measurement, that is, flow rate. In conjunction with, and within the expert systems approach, an enhanced flowmeter can, for example, be utilised for condition monitoring purposes and, for diagnostic engineering management and optimisation of process plant operations. This thesis demonstrates the new importance of flow measurement signals from the point of view of extracting additional information which include: - (i) the basic process measurement value (ii) a quality or validity index associated with the basic measurement value, (iii) any other information which can be used to characterise the operational status of the plant and associated instrumentation. The signal processing tasks involve spectral analysis and spectrum estimation, system identification and parametric time series modelling techniques. Qualitative signatures which have been identified for different flowmeters operating under a wide variety of conditions in different process flow rigs are described. The utilisation of the results towards enhancing the performance the of the process instrumentation system is emphasised and demonstrated throughout the thesis.

Abstract

There are insufficient management functions that begin with planning, institutional arrangements and technical handling of e-waste materials in Nigeria. Modern trends in recycling still fall short of global practices. This study examined Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) management strategies in Southeastern Nigeria with a view to suggesting appropriate implementable measures. It used an investigative approach through questionnaire administration. Twenty local government areas were purposively selected from five mutually exclusive strata of states. Data from 36 government agencies/offices were analyzed using percentage and linear multiple regression. Results revealed that WEEE management strategies were inadequate. The study concluded that WEEE management strategies were inapt and poorly implemented. Regulatory bodies should therefore urgently embrace and adopt appropriate management strategies, conduct periodic inventories of WEEE types and quantity and encourage the set-up and enforcement of cutting edge standards for modern facilities designated for the disposal of e-waste materials. Abstract

Definitions of asset management tend to be broad in scope, covering a wide variety of areas including general management, operations and production arenas and, financial and human capital aspects. While the broader conceptualisation allows a multifaceted investigation of physical assets, the arenas constitute a multiplicity of spheres of activity. We define engineering asset management in this paper as the total management of physical, as opposed to financial, assets. However, engineering assets have a financial dimension that reflects their economic value and the management of this value is an important part of overall engineering asset management. We also define more specifically what we mean by an ˵engineering asset″ and what the management of such an asset entails. Our approach takes as its starting point the conceptualisation of asset management that posits it as an interdisciplinary field of endeavour and we include notions from commerce and business as well as engineering. The framework is also broad, emphasising the life-cycle of the asset. The paper provides a basis for analysing the general problem of physical asset management, relating engineering capability to economic cost and value in a highly integrated way. 30. Behavioural Preferences for Engineering Asset Management.

Abstract

The essence of managing engineered physical assets that form our built environment is to provide benefits to satisfy the continuum of constraints imposed by rapidly changing business strategy, economy, ergonomics, operational and technical integrity, and regulatory compliance. Innovative approaches to enhance and sustain the profile of values required from these assets demands a shift in thinking styles, cognitive and mental processing modes, and the attitudes of engineering professionals if they are to be effective in asset management occupations. This paper describes the results of a 2005 survey of 190 practicing engineers to ascertain what thinking styles should determine behavioural preferences for managers of engineered physical assets. The study confirms other results from cognitive theory and psychology, highlighting the top ten thinking styles as ranked by survey respondents. The paper provides a strategic view of engineering asset management (EAM) within the context of innovation, with particular focus on behavioural alignment towards the modern era of innovation, knowledge and learning economy.
