Abstract

International audience; This article presents a procedure for optimizing the charge comparison method (CCM) used for pulse shape discrimination (PSD). Without prior knowledge of the signals or the readout system, our procedure automatically optimizes the integration periods maximizing the discrimination ability of the radiation detector. This procedure is innovative in its adaptability and automation without being complicated to implement on a standard computer. Another advantage of this approach is the possibility to use it even if the operation of the readout system and the recording process of the signal is not fully known. Therefore, it enables all detection systems generating signals whose temporal evolution depends on the origin to optimize the integration periods of the CCM. Our procedure is based on verifying that two criteria are met in terms of the number of components and the correlation of Gaussian fits made on the distribution of the tail-to-total integral resulting from the CCM. We tested the procedure for different application cases. First, the optimization of the integration periods of the CCM was performed for the discrimination between fast neutrons and gamma rays with a plastic scintillator and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) in the energy range [250 keVee; 4.5 MeVee]. The integration periods, from the laboratory's experience with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and plastic scintillators, gave a Figure of Merit (FoM) of 0.58 corresponding to a rejection ratio (RR) of 8.6%. The procedure improved the FoM up to 0.88 corresponding to a RR of 1.9%. We also applied the procedure to the discrimination between beta and gamma rays with a PMT and a phoswich organic detector and to the discrimination between signals collected from neutrons or partial discharges within a fission chamber.

Abstract

6Li-Doped plastic scintillators (PSs) have been optimized as radioluminescent sensors for detection of fast/thermal neutrons and gamma rays for several purposes such as homeland security. Among 16 low molecular weight (C < 8) lithium carboxylates, Liα-valerate (LiαVal) exhibits high potential for loading (up to 50 wt%) in clear PSs composed of polystyrene and standard fluors (20 wt% PPO, 0.03 wt% POPOP). A methodical study of PS composition illustrates that the Li carboxylates and methacrylic acid comonomers impact the scintillation yields (from 4410 to 7790 ph per MeV) and nthermal/nfast/gamma discrimination performances with significant figures of merit (from 0.23 to 1.45 above 180 keVee).

Abstract

We report herein the synthesis of a new series of plastic scintillators (PSs) loaded with 6Li210B4O7 nanoparticles (NPs), as new radioluminescent sensors for fast/thermal neutron and gamma ray detection in the critical context of homeland security. This study aims to evaluate the benefit of such nanoparticles towards thermal neutron detection in a fast neutrons/gamma discriminating PS composition. First, a size-controlled synthesis of Li2B4O7 NPs assited with poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) is performed. Then enriched 6Li210B4O7 NPs (65 ± 22 nm) are dispersed in clear PSs mainly composed of polystyrene and standard fluorophores (20 wt% PPO, 0.03 wt% POPOP). For the first time, a triple nthermal/nfast/gamma discrimination is presented with a NP-loaded plastic scintillator, where both 6Li(n,α) and 10B(n,α) are observed.

Abstract

Special Nuclear Material (SNM) such as uranium and plutonium isotopes could be potentially used to make a nuclear bomb involved in a terrorist attack. To prevent illicit trafficking of SNM in Europe, inspection of cargo containers at borders is required. X-ray scanning is widely used by customs to control suspect containers. However, this technology is not the most adapted to bring to light SNM signature. Therefore, a second line technology based on the photofission reaction could enable to detect SNM in a non-destructive manner. In the frame of the C-BORD European project, several teams specialized in photofission have joined forces to design an active photon interrogation system enabling to detect SNM hidden in cargo containers. The system is based on the use of a linear electron accelerator (linac). First, high-energy photons generated by Bremsstrahlung in the conversion target of the linac irradiate a suspect area of the cargo container. Secondly, prompt and delayed particles emitted following photofission reactions are detected if SNM is present. The largest seaport in Europe (Maasvlakte, in the suburbs of Rotterdam, Netherlands), where 9 MeV linacs are used by Dutch customs for X-ray scanning, has been chosen as test site. In order to deploy a full system taking advantage of all photofission signatures, different subsystems have been developed. In this paper, first, we give an overview of the photofission system. Then, we show how the system has been deployed at the Rotterdam seaport in September and October 2018 and tested on mock-ups of cargo containers. Finally, we show that setting up a photon interrogation system on an industrial facility initially designed for X-ray scanning is a challenge which has been successfully met in the frame of the C-BORD project to deploy the first photofission measurement system on an industrial site in Europe. The outcomes of this first deployment will be exposed and the future challenges to be addressed will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Since Helium-3 shortage announcement, organic scintillators play a major role in neutron detection. Our laboratory decided to focus on plastic scintillators and their ability to discriminate fast neutrons from gamma rays. In this work, we highlight the influence of the secondary fluorophore in lab-made plastic scintillators. The secondary fluorophore is generally added in the scintillating mixture to shift the emission wavelength towards the transparency domain of the material to improve its attenuation length. Thus, it is considered as a harmless molecule and is barely seen as a key criterion that could enhance the performances of the organic scintillator. In our work, we demonstrate that this molecule, even added at a small concentration (typically in the range 0.02–0.2 wt%), directly impacts the neutron/gamma discrimination ability of plastics. Not only the secondary fluorophore plays a role in self-absorption of the scintillating material, but also the couple it creates with the primary fluorophore has to be carefully chosen, as some specific triplet energy transfers between the two fluorophores can influence the neutron/gamma discrimination abilities of the plastic scintillator. Aside from classical photophysical inconveniences such as self-absorption or diffusion, the possibility that the whole, bulk material was heterogeneous in a photochemical point of view was also checked. Thus, various samples were cut from bulk monoliths and their pulse shape discrimination compared with the parent scintillator in terms of Figure of Merit and light output.

Abstract

We report herein the application of a new series of plastic scintillators loaded with lithium tetraborate nanoparticles (Li 2 B 4 O 7 ) designed for the simultaneous detection of fast neutrons, thermal neutrons and gamma-rays. First, MCNP simulations are performed to highlight the potential benefit of Li 2 B 4 O 7 loading. Then, a nanoparticle-loaded scintillator is prepared and evaluated towards the detection of a partially thermalized neutron/gamma 252-californium source. Several scenarios of radiation/matter interactions are evaluated against the observed results. A detection chamber composed of boron-containing chipboard wood has been specifically designed and a subtraction method was set up to afford the best discrimination pattern. For the first time, a triple discrimination is presented with a nanoparticles-loaded plastic scintillator, where both 6 Li(n, α ) and 10 B(n, α ) signatures are observed. A Figure of Merit of 1.40 was calculated between fast neutrons and gamma rays around 480 keVee. The Figure of Merit between fast + thermal neutrons and gamma rays is slightly worse as it is 1.16 at 380 keVee.

Abstract

In this paper we present the prompt photofission neutron detection performance of undoped CaF2 scintillator using Threshold Activation Detection (TAD). The study is carried out in the frame of C-BORD Horizon 2020 project, during which an efficient toolbox for high volume freight non-intrusive inspection (NII) is under development. Technologies for radiation monitoring are the part of the project. Particularly, detection of various radiological threats on country borders plays an important significant role in Homeland Security applications. Detection of illegal transfer of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) - 235U, 233U and 239Pu - is particular due to the potential use for production of nuclear weapon as well as radiological dispersal device (RDD) V known also as a “dirty bomb”. This technique relies on activation of 19F nuclei in the scintillator medium by fast neutrons and registration of high-energy β particles and γ-rays from the decay of reaction products. The radiation from SNM is detected after irradiation in order to avoid detector blinding. Despite the low 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O reaction cross-section, the method could be a good solution for detection of shielded nuclear material. Results obtained with the CaF2 detector were compared with the previous study done for BaF2 and 3He detector. These experimental results were obtained using 252Cf source and 9 MeV Varian Linatron M9 linear accelerator (LINAC). Finally, performance of the prompt neutron detection system based on CaF2 will be validated at Rotterdam Seaport during field trails in 2018.

Abstract

International audience; In the frame of the C-BORD project, five innovate technology pillars for Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) are under development. Freight containers are potential means for smuggling, drug trafficking and transport of dangerous or illicit substances. The goal of the C-BORD project is to increase interdiction of illicit or dangerous materials in containerized freight and deliver new capabilities against critical operational requirements and constrains. Particularly, the aim of the project is to increase throughput of the container per time unit, reduce cost and time of cargo inspection and minimize the false negative and false positive alarm ratios. Finally, thanks to field trials organized during the project, capability of these systems will be proven and the C-BORD Toolbox usefulness will be validated by end users under real conditions at sea and border crosses.

Abstract

Conference of 2016 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, Medical Imaging Conference and Room-Temperature Semiconductor Detector Workshop, NSS/MIC/RTSD 2016 ; Conference Date: 29 October 2016 Through 6 November 2016; Conference Code:131365; International audience; For several years, detection of various threats on country borders plays a significant role in the frame of Homeland Security applications. One of this threat is the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials (especially including Special Nuclear Material - SNM - 235U, 233U or 239Pu), which can be potentially used for production of nuclear weapon as well as radiological dispersal device (RDD) - known also as a "dirty bomb". In order to detect the potentially hidden nuclear material, systems using linear accelerators and a group of detectors are developed by several scientific groups around the world. Besides solutions focusing on detection of delayed γ-rays or neutrons, also the systems dedicated for prompt neutron detection were proposed. One of the possible prompt neutron detection technique is known as Threshold Activation Detection (TAD). This technique relies on activation of 19F nuclei in the scintillator medium by fast neutrons and registration of high-energy particles and γ-rays from the decay of reaction products (for example, 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O). Recent studies in the frame of the European Horizon 2020 C-BORD project showed that, despite the low 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O reaction cross-section, the method could be a good solution for detection of shielded nuclear material. A benchmark of the TAD technique based on fluorine detectors with reference method focused on delayed neutron detection with 3He detectors will be presented in this paper. These experimental results were obtained using 9 MeV Varian Linatron M9 linear accelerator (LINAC).
